Hi Bryan,

for some reason, the file association between a .jar file and java
wasn't done in your system.

I don't have a windows system here right now, but the jar file must be
started with the -jar parameter, eg. jave -jar path to filename.

DO you know how to open a command prompt under WIndows?

If you, do so, and the cd into the directory where you have unzipped
SMSQmulator.

From there type java -jar SMSQmulator.jar.

Report back any errors

Thanks Tim Wolfgang for the helpful advice.

I did start by clearing out Java and installing ver 7 afresh.

When I use the command prompt as described, there is a pause and then a
load of error messages scroll up the screen.  And Tim, I've tried Genj;
the set-up was supposed to set a desktop short cut, but didn't, and
nothing happens when I double click on Genj.jar.

I did manage to freeze thisfirst error line, but strayed into the cmd
screen and it scrolled on.

Exception in thread AWT-EventQueue-0java.lang. NoClass..

I think that I had better get someone more knowledgeable than myself
actually on the computer, when they might quickly spot the problem. As
an engineer I know the difficulty of diagnosing faults at a distance.

Hi Bryan, and well done Wolfgang

same thing happened on my PC Brian first time.
Although the files and .jar file appeared in the folder it would not load, I
moved the files to a new folder then  right click and choose Extract all then
it works

BTW not Ql related but I've had strange screen shut down usually after a left
mouse click since upgrading Java prior to trying QLmulator, a reset to before
the upgrade seems to have cured this

Bill and Wolfgang,

Useful tip, Bill. I extracted to a new folder on my personal set,
instead of in Program Fles, and it works!! No inkling of why; leave
that puzzle to the experts! Extracted the same way Genj also runs.

In haste.

I wonder if it is because there's a space in at least one of the folders
in the full path name? I know some programs don't like spaces (or other
weird characters) in the path. They get confused at the first one.

Linux, on the other hand, copes!

On 64 bit Windows, all 32 bit applications are installed into program
files (x86) or similar, and quite a lot of them barf at the space, and
the '(' or ')' - so Microsoft give you a folder by default that many
programs cannot actually use. Go figure.

Cheers,
Norm.

Careful, Bill! Wolfgang is at pains to point out SMSQmulator is not a QL

Oh don't waorry about that, I just wanted to make sure that people know

There's one way to find out

A priori, I can't see why this could not run on a tablet. Sor far it
runs under Linux (even on a Pi), MacOS and Windows.

Give it a try and tell us!

I've mada a folder Program_files_2 in C:\ and copied them into there.
Both SMSQ and Genj run ok from there so perhaps it is a
space-in-the-filename thing.

Bill,
I'm not Norman, but answer anyways ;)

Android is, simply spoken, just a Java-based GUI shell on top of a (typically
ARM-) Linux kernel.
The Android GUI, however, uses entirely different graphical GUI libraries
than Linux, MacOS or Windows Java. This would not be a simple port, I'm afraid.
