You are exactly right. Another reason I like to have the whole thing on a CD
is that I regularly have to re-install Windoze from scratch to keep it
ticking over nicely. This is a pain, but well worth it. Qdos/Smsq never
needs to be "installed", thats one of the beauties of that system.

BTW Has anyone tried HyperOs? Theyve run a 16 page ad in Computer Shopper
every month for the past 6(?) months.

I ask for two reasons, one is that it appears to promise that I wont have to
keep doing these re-installations as you can simply clone a pristine
installation, use it until it screws itself silly in the normal Windoze
fashion, and then just clone a new, pristine one in a couple of seconds.

The other reason is that the ad campaign reminds me suspiciously of ol'
Freddy Vaccha's approach to advertising. Does anyone know whether he has a
hand in it? Its either Freddy or a very close relative. Id be prepared to
bet a penny on it!

Actually no Tony.
You can select the "administrator" options and download all the updates
separately without using Windows Update.
As for speeds, it takes about 15 minutes to download the latest service
pack on a US broadband connection, so if Per wants it I will do it for him.

Ah that is good - did not know that.
I assume this is a complete pack though with all previous updates.

The autorun.inf only works on Windows systems though, surely?

I don't mind adding an autorun.info which would boot iit into a DOS or
Windows text viewer to show the readme.txt, that should be simple
enough, I could even use the free Word viewer to boot the readme.doc
file.

Ideally needs to be made bootable for Amiga, Mac, Windows, ST and
Linux systems though, as there are emulators for all of them.

Sorry to continue an OT discussion here but you are wrong. You can go to
the Microsoft site and download the SP4. The pack you need to download
is the one for network users. This is because people with multiple
machine do not want to connect them individually to do the updates.

Re: [ql-users] an [OT] favour

2003-08-16 Thread Dave Walker

Tony,

That is not true - it is possible to get the complete SP as a single file.
The full SP4 for W2K is 129Mb (I know because I have it !). This can then
be applied to any flavour of W2K (workstation, server, advanced server).

I agree if you are online, you can download a setup program that then
downloads only the required parts - but this is not the only way to apply
the SP.

Using my acorn I formatted 2 new floppies DOS 1.44MB (they came Mac
formatted, which made them cheaper) then added lxx and vmlinux to disk 1,
and ramimg5_gz to disk 2. I put them in my just fitted (to the Q60)
brand new slimline floppy drive, so that I can fix the CF's C/H/S now
that I have a short cable. The expensive drive then died on me! So my
question is, if you connect a floppies data cable around the wrong way
will it destroy a slimline drive and what is the case for normal drives?
My QLs seem to eat floppy drives for breakfast, I have lost 9 drives
so far. Am I right in think as someone told me that the red end of the
data cable should be near the power cable. This is the case on the Acorn
I am writing this on, but not the slimline drive cable adapter.
