Re: [ql-users] QPC and Windows XP SP2 (clearly OT)

2004-09-10 Thread Jeremy Taffel
It's actually a big step in the right direction. The system is much more
secure by default than previously. Most of the problems are due to old
software using ports which are now locked down by default.

The list of applications which SP breaks includes many which are
trivial to get working again, and even include some which are not broken
by it! (eg Zone Alarm; its on the list, but according to Zone Labs, it
is compatible). One problem is that msoft advise that you MUST remove
all spyware before installing it. Most users wouldn't know what spyware
they have, never mind how to get rid of it!

My advice for anyone thinking of upgrading is to do a clean install - it
is possible to install XP and SP2 in one go. Having said that I ignored
my own advice on one machine, but it had hardly ever been connected to
the internet.

Did anyone tried to use Qpc (last version 3.20) in a WinXP SP2 machine ?
There is a general instability, without any reason QPC close itself
randomly, also, i had to cancel some extension in the boot file cause they
crash QPC.
This happended after the SP2 installation.
Ciao

The Q40 flp density workaround in v. 3.06 now works. This is a 1 byte change
in 1 source file, and I still managed to get it wrong!
 -sigh -
It is time to worry when you struggle to get a 1 bit change right.
At least with a byte you have an excuse (8-)#

Well what have I done wrong???
Obviously nothing ... :-)
I have just installed and run QPC2 v3.2 and have run Text87 and Qspread
within it.
And I have installed XP SP2 as well.
Admittedly, I am running on Sony Vaio but it should not make that much
difference!!
Just means you have a relatively 'clean' PC system, with no obvious
accumulated clutter. Probably a reasonably new PC.

People quickly forget what applications and uses they have put a PC
through ... not all applications use accepted protocols.

I assume XP and Service Pack 2 are cleaning up an OS that has had many
leaks in the past ... but then again I could be wrong :-)

The network server at work now has XP Professional installed, whereas
previously it was Windows 2000 Professional.

Apart from having to re-establish my password it appears to have made no
difference.

Well, it would appear that our QLing has become too reliable. So many issues
raised here recently seem to be about overcoming PC problems to reliably run
QDOSMSQ. (and trying to find ways to bring threads back on topic!)

My brother is not computer literate and conservative in the extreme
 when it comes to upgrades.

However, after a recent rebuild of his PC I put firefox and thunderbird
on his system. Without any effort on his part it imported all his
outlook mail, and explorer favourites, and automatically sorts out and
separates over 95% of the spam he receives. He was so impressed he has
asked me how to remove internet exploder and lookout from his (win98)
PC. I believe there are shareware progs to do just that. Does anyone
 have any recomendations?

The 2 you mention are only applications, like any other, so use any
dedicated application - of which there are many - to remove them.

I use McAfee Quickclean free version ( given away on magazine CD's ),
 for example.

The point with applications like the above is that they find all the
links and references and remove those as well. Many also have an option
to keep a record so that you can re-install the removed application
again at a later date if you change your mind. As we are all human,
 this is useful :-)
