mystery failure notice
I received a failure notice concerning an email I did not send. I am attempting to track down how this happened and have hit a wall. When I do 'tail -f /var/log/maillog' I get current activity. If I do 'more /var/log/maillog' it goes all the way back to day one and I don't have time to slog through FOUR YEARS of maillog when what I need was a couple of days ago. Is there any way to select a certain number of items to view in this log?

I'm unaffected as well, but NOT because I am smarter than anybody, I just manage to pay attention and NEVER download attachments! I also find it entertaining to watch all the traffic the spammers inspire. 25+ copies of the virus on this list alone, nearly 80 virus reports from 2 broken reporting entities (yes, I kept track just for fun), and maybe 150 email griping about same! Not to mention the myriad email requests for information on the best antivirus software to use. > > i use windows because (and only because) i cannot do the interface design > for end-users of windows without walking in their shoes (and i > love photoshop!) I'm in the same boat with all the bookkeeping and office stuff that I have to deal with constantly on the W machine and the server stuck in the dungeon in the back office. I telnet to it often, but find it just easier to use the MS product close at hand. And, ditto about photoshop. It is a winner!
RE: restart without rebooting
> > But I don't think BSDi knows the killall command. > That is exactly correct. I was able to find the PID and restart the qmail-send. Thanks to all who responded. I am working on the Unix books, but find some of them are written in techno-shorthand. I need a dictionary to go along with them.
restart without rebooting
I need to learn how to restart qmail on my BSDi system. I have not been able to locate a qmail-restart in any of the qmail directories. Whenever I make changes in qmail, I have had to resort to `shutdown -r now` thus rebooting the entire system. I don't like doing this. Someone told me to try 'killall -SIGHUP qmail', but someone else said this might kill everything running - that the machine would not read to the 'qmail' at the end of the line. Any suggestions?
RE: suddenly cannot receive email
Thanks to all who helped me through this "little" fiasco. I have everybody up and running and receiveing email, and I am so much better educated now. Again, thanks a ton!
RE: suddenly cannot receive email
OK, I am learning, slowly but surely. Now I need to know how to send a SIGHUP. I don't think it is good for my system to keep rebooting every time I make a change in qmail. In /var/qmail/bin I have qmail-start, but have not been able to locate a qmail-restart or a qmail-stop anywhere. If I could locate these or learn how to send qmail-send a SIGHUP, I feel I would be making real progress. > It sounds like you didn't send qmail-send a SIGHUP. You need to > do that to get > it to reread virtualdomains. > > Chris >
RE: suddenly cannot receive email
Just to get the syntax right in my mind (and my notes), as I understand from the information I have received, 'echo "newdomain.com:alias-newdomain" >/var/qmail/control/virtualdomains' will overwrite virtualdomains, while 'echo "newdomain.com:alias-newdomain" >> \ /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains' will simply add to virtuals. And I don't need to put the 'www.' in front of the 'newdomain,' is this correct?
RE: suddenly cannot receive email
None of my alias addresses work. I guess I need to put all the domains back in virtual. I know I can do it through the 'echo "eachdomain.com:domain.com" >> \ /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains' route. Would it be equally effective just to go into virtualdomains and edit the file? > > > > > > Doesn't chismtrail.com need to go back in virtualdomains? > > > > > > echo "chismtrail.com:chismtrail.com" >> \ > > > /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains > > > > I'll try that. suddenly cannot receive email
Until I get this mess fixed, please cc responses to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sorry, but it is the only way I can receive email right now. I seem to have done something to break my qmail. Yesterday afternoon, I added a virtual user in /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains and put his forwarding address in alias/.qmail-garnette-monte and added his domain to rcpthosts then restarted. I did not notice at the time (because I left work right after that), but I have not received ANY email since I did that. We have a UNIX box running BSDi 4.0, QMail, Apache and FP. This morning I did a 'tail -f /var/log/maillog' and found tons of bounce messages going out and the following messages about incoming mail: Jun 7 09:57:54 midnightsun qmail: 991925874.483380 starting delivery 434: msg 2 77962 to remote [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jun 7 09:57:54 midnightsun qmail: 991925874.490779 status: local 0/10 remote 1/ 20 Jun 7 09:57:54 midnightsun qmail: 991925874.510962 delivery 434: failure: Sorry ._Although_I'm_listed_as_a_best-preference_MX_or_A_for_that_host,/it_isn't_i n_my _control/locals_file,_so_I_don't_treat_it_as_local._(#5.4.6)/ I cehecked control/locals and found my main server, 'midnightsun.chismtrail.com' so I added just plain 'chismtrail.com' in case that might be the problem, even though it has been working like that just fine in the past. RE: qmail troubleshooting
I am still a newbie and unable to find a lot of things I think my qmail should have. Some things I can find, but not where they should be. At any rate, when suggestions come up as quoted below, I try them out and often discover hidden elements. When I tried this one, `find /var/qmail/queue/remote -type f` ? the returned message was: /var/qmail/queue/remote/0/277955: Permission denied. I guess my question now is, what permission is higher than root? > > 2) A way to look at the status of the queue, other than qmail-qstat > > `find /var/qmail/queue/remote -type f` ? >

RE: need to forward to 2 addresses
I added the addresses with a comma between. It didn't work, so I went in and edited the alias file to put each address on a separate line and everything seems to have gone through just fine. Thanks to all who answered for your help again.
need to forward to 2 addresses
On a UNIX box with BSDi 4.0, Apache, QMail and FP (though FP is not involved in this issue) I have the following problem: My customer needs to have email forwarded to her in Germany as well as to her farm manager here in the states. I have been researching all I could find on the subject and have gotten close, but not there yet. In the man pages I found the following: forward(1) DESCRIPTION forward forwards each new mail message to the specified list of addresses. dot-qmail.0 (3) A forward line begins with an ampersand: &[EMAIL PROTECTED] Although it clearly states that it can be done, there is no mention of how to set up the second forwarding address. I think what I have below is the proper procedure for _one_ forwarding address. echo "blackvengeance.com:alias-blackvengeance" >>/var/qmail/control/virtualdomains echo "&forwardaddress" >~alias/.qmail-blackvengeance-info echo "blackvengeance.com" >>/var/qmail/control/rcpthosts' My questiion is: do I add the second, comma separated, in that last echo line as: 'echo "&forwardaddress",'&secondforward">~alias/.qmail-blackvengeance-info' or do I do a second / separate echo line as: 'echo "&secondaddress">~alias/.qmail-blackvengeance-info' below the first? Thanks in advance for your help. V
OT a bit difficulties online
I have a machinein the front office that has Netscape, AOL and IE. Today, for some unknown reason, while checking my sistes, I encounter the following: On Netscape, none of the links work (on anybody's pages - not just mine). (The last time this happened, I rebooted the machine and it was OK. This time it didn't help.) On AOL, I get old pages rather than the new ones I just published. It finally gave me the right pages, but it took a few passes. IE works just fine. Anyone know what's up? Is Netscape just 'broke?'

My server is a UNIX box with BSDi 4.0, Apache, Qmail, and Frontpage. Can anyone direct me to a list like this for FrontPage?
newbie question on forwarding email
My server is a UNIX box with BSDI 4.0, Apache, Qmail, and Frontpage. My BSDI and QMail were set up by someone else (no longer with us) and I am pretty much a newbie in this arena A Frontpage client wants to publish a form to be received on my server addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and relayed (forwarded/redirected) to her personal email address which is not on my server. The first hurdle was to add SMTPHost mymailserver.address.com in the frontpage.cnf AND her domainname.cnf file . Now I have been told that I need to add herdomain.org to the QMail list of allowable 'local' domains. Reading on, in LWQ 3.5 it seems I may need to set her up in /var/qmail/alias as well? If so, I would set her up as 'info'? And how do I set it up to redirect to her personal [EMAIL PROTECTED]? Do I also need to do adduser 'info' in the BSDI side of the server? Can anyone point me in the right direction? And, is there anything else I need to configure so this will work? Thanks in advance for your help.
RE: Client email won't download
Thanks for all your help. I deleted the largest from both /cur and /new. That did not help. Since the client is also my husband, I felt safe in reading the email to see if it were important, then deleted all the junk from both directories. Don't know which specific email was the problem, but got rid of the hangup. Looking back at the directories after the email was delivered, I found that /cur is the actual delivering directory in this situation. Again, thanks.
RE: Client email won't download
Thank you one and all. I am slowly getting to the bottom of this - and learning a lot, too.
Client email won't download
I am running Qmail on a Unix box with BSDI 4.0 and Apache. My client has been trying to get his email, but the first message is so big his receiving program locks up. I went into /usr/var/vpopmail/users/hisname/Maildir/new and deleted the message with the lowest number, assuming that was the first and hoping it was the culprit. No such luck. My questions to you: Is there a command to show the size of the various emails in his box without opening each one individually? OR, did I go into the wrong list? Maybe /cur instead of /new? Which one actually delivers the mail?
