Probably your maildir permissions are wrong.
Use maildirmake to build the Maildir directory:

cd /home/aviana ; /var/qmail/bin/maildirmake Maildir
chown aviana:users Maildir -R (or adequate it to your OS)

No such error happened before implementation of the qmail.

It's still your internal server's problem -- it's not obeying

queued by your internal server (it didn't respond 2xx to the DATA

Fix the internal server. If you want proof it's broken, capture one of
these messages being transferred with tcpdump.

qmail delivers mail as the user it is delivering to (assuming a standard
install). So the recipient of the mail has to A.) have permissions to get
to and write into the Maildir, and B.) The Maildir and its subdirectories
need to exist.

You should be able to use ls -l to determine if the ownership and
permissions are correct on the homedirectory and Maildir in question. If
the Maildir doesn't exist, create it.

If you can't figure it out, we will need more information, like logfiles,
an ls -lR of the user's home directory, etc.

Probably a typo, since there was obviously some data for patch to work on.

If it weren't, I may guess wrong -pnum.

No, the output clearly shows that qmail-smtpd.c was correctly found, so -p
problems don't factor into this.

My guess is that Charrua applied another patch before this one that
inserted a whole bunch of stuff at the top of qmail-smtpd.c, thus throwing
this patch off. Either that, or he typo'd again and accidentally blanked
qmail-smtpd.c (it's happened to me before 8-).

Charrua, your best bet is to delete the whole source tree and unpack it
again. If you applied more than one patch that affects qmail-smtpd.c, try
changing the order in which you apply them.

What does this error mean? How can I correct this?

After reading more of the error message, I learned that I had not installed

it happens, apparently randomly, with hotmail. A list I run regularly

25 or "smtp", and restart or HUP inetd. If you have sendmail on the system,

The error message means what it says: qmail is unable to establish a TCP
connection with the server at the receiving end. Try to telnet to the SMTP
port of the server at the receiving end:

telnet mailserver.domain.com 25

You should see an SMTP greeting from the other server. If you receive some
sort of time out error, and you cannot connect to the receiving server,
there is something "wrong" with the network: check routing possible
filtering/firewalling of packets. If you can reach port 25 of the receiving
server, read on...

error message2: could not bind, address already in use?

This leads me to believe that your qmail cannot open the socket on port 25
of your host to start listening on it. See the posts from other listmembers.

you are right, i can get no telnet and also no smtp connection to the mail
server but ftp works quite well. do you think that the firewall on the
mx-server in our LAN is responsiple for this behaviour? Is it possible to
configure qmail to relay mail to the mx-server and not any further?
the command netstat -nlp indicates that qmail-tcpserver is listening on
port 25 (sendmail is removed via Yast)

Since you are able to ftp to the machine, routing appears to be ok between
the two machines, and that indeed something is filtering out your connection
attempts. Your best bet would be to contact the person in charge of the
firewall and als him to change the config. It's perfectly possible to have
qmail relay to another server. Note that - since there is some packet
filtering going on on your network - you may also have to ask the firewall
guy to make sure that your qmail server's port 25 is accessible to any other
server you want connecting to your system. From what I understand, qmail is
running correctly on your system. You could try connecting to it via telnet
localhost 25, or from a computer on the same LAN just to make sure.

I'd be surprised. Just because a server is overloaded doesn't mean
that permissions start acting differently. But certainly the "cannot

I am using DRBD for qmail server into a fail-over configuration:
when the master is down THAN the slave will start its instance of qmail
and vice versa. Never both.

Its the same for qmail like shared queue for two instances ?

Hi,

I have this problem only when I use what it's called

This device is like NBD and RAID-1 (mirroring) if it

Well, when I mount this device, everything looks fine

It could be related to this kind of device (DRBD) ? If

What is the procedure of qmail server when try to

qmail identify

Thanks,

RE: Error 451

2000-11-03 Thread Hubbard, David

Why would you not want to send a 451? Here's
two reasons:

1) Why send a 451 back to a broken MTA who's sending you
emails with bare newlines? It's very unlikely that someone
is going to fix their MTA while the email destined to you
is still in the queue so it would get fixed before the
final retry. So switch it to a 553 just to keep the
other MTA from bothering you again.

2) Some broken MTAs like Microsoft's SMTP Service will
ignore that 451 when it is a newline failure and hit your
server as often as the data connection between the two
will allow. On a big pipe, this can really kill your
connection. I have edited my qmail-smtpd.c to replace
the 451 with a 553 for the smtplf issue.

Rumor has it that there was a qmail bug where extra newlines in the email
  message generated a 451 response.

Rumor is wrong; there is no such bug. The bug is in some other MTAs which
send bare linefeeds.

See http://cr.yp.to/docs/smtplf.html for details.

We think we are running the latest stable version under Linux.

That would be 1.03, yes?

You can test this theory by typing 'telnet mydomain.com 25' and
seeing if the connection is accepted or rejected.

If the connection is truly rejected, then find out why. Is
qmail-smtpd running (ps -auxwww | grep qmail-smtpd). If so, is it
listening
to port 25 (look at the tcpserver command line, use 'lsof', or possibly
 'netstat')?

I've solved the problem. It was not my fault. The entry in the DNS was

RE: Error: Deferred: Connection refused

2000-08-17 Thread Greg Owen

I have a problem with qmail. A mail sent through the
qmail-smtp to a local user is delivered properly, but
when I send the same mail through another smtp server
 I get this error message:

- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

- Transcript of session follows -
[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Deferred: Connection refused by mydomain.com.

First, let me repeat what I heard you say, to make sure we're on the
same page. You have qmail running on 'mydomain.com' (whatever that resolves
to.) When logged into 'mydomain.com', you can send mail to another user
just fine. When other machines try to deliver mail to 'mydomain.com',
however, they get the above error.

This implies that qmail-smtpd is not running and/or not listening
correctly on port 25. The "Connection refused" message usually means
exactly that.

You can test this theory by typing 'telnet mydomain.com 25' and
seeing if the connection is accepted or rejected.

If the connection is truly rejected, then find out why. Is
qmail-smtpd running (ps -auxwww | grep qmail-smtpd). If so, is it listening
to port 25 (look at the tcpserver command line, use 'lsof', or possibly
'netstat')?

It's odd that qmail will work after I restart it

Is your machine an open relay, or in a dialup pool? This could be a rejection
due to the other end using RBL, DUL, ORBS, etc.

That's okay. However, Dan's English is extremely good. He never wrote
an error message which said, ``Don't is possible deliver message for
us''. It would help very much if you copied the error message exactly.

the domain is test.com and host is serv1...

Is this you, then?

   [budney@goshawk budney]$ nslookup test.com
   Server: duckling.swoop.local
   Address: 192.168.0.1

   Non-authoritative answer:
   Name:test.com
   Address: 207.206.9.99

test.com does not have any mx record for serv1; nor can I find any
information on serv1.test.com in DNS. Can you give more information
about your setup? If your domain is not really test.com, then you
should give the proper name. The people on this list can help you;
they will not hack your server when you give its right name. They
_will_ yell at you when you lie about its name.

what is this ?? is DNS ?? this server is under of firewall with NAT !!

You need to make your question clearer. Please tell 1) what you did,
2) what the computer did, and 3) what you expected the computer to do.

Len.

It sounds like the correct libraries and header files are installed, but
that the proper symlinks are not made. You should have '/usr/include/asm'
symlinked to '/usr/src/linux/include/asm', which is symlinked to the
assembler for your architecture (e.g., 'asm-i386'). You can make the
'/usr/include/asm' link directly to '/usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386' if you
really want.

The answer is that they should use their ISP's server for sending mail.

This will become more and more necessary as ISP's begin blocking access to
outside mail servers. If you don't tell them this now, you are just going to
 have a headache later.

I actually intercept outgoing traffic to point 25 and send it to my own
server. I've only had one person notice this and when I explained why, he
decided that he could see how that might be useful and didn't bother me about
it any more. If ISPs did that instead of blocking access, this wouldn't be an
issue.

That depends on how lame their mail server is. There certainly is a place for
that kind of access, but there are people who aren't going to want to have
their traffic (smtp, http or whatever) relayed through servers that may muck
things up.

No. You can also use one of the STARTTLS or AUTH patches with clients
that support them (most of the biggies like Netscape, Eudora, Outlook
Express).

Go and shoot the people who crippled your linux system by not installing
the complete development packages (in this case kernel-headers is missing,
in case you use redhat linux).
Then go and shoot the makers of your distribution for not getting their
compiler dependencies right.

Not comfortably. A good resource for an explanation is the "Newbie's
guide to relaying" (http://www.palomine.net/qmail/relaying.html).

The only decent way is a patch to allow users who have authenticated via
POP3 to use SMTP for a limited time, but educating users to check mail
*before* sending sounds like quite a hastle to me - I simply tell them to
use their ISP's mail server.

Re: Error 1

So the only way is to have them actually log on to the server to
retrieve mail? Is there a way to protect the server via ipchains or
something else to minimize the spammer risk while still having the open
relay?

Basically I have some very slow computer users who panic at any change.
I would really like it if they could just plug the values into netscape
at home and get their mail from here and reply to it if need be.

Thanks
