[qmailtoaster] Help I am sending Spam
To all, I have a Qmail-Toaster server that is sending SPAM messages. They are from anonymous@my.domain and all are going to mailboxes in Italy. The message is always the same, subject PostePay Aggiornamento and it is a HTML based messages that is definently a Phishing message. Every time we stop Qmail and then empty the queue using qmHandle, then restart Qmail, a similar thing happens. Around 200 or so messages arrive, then the server starts sending out these phishing messages. On the server (Centos 5.6) I have checked the following Rootkits - with rkhunter Viruses - Sophos (found 7 viruses and removed) Checked all the Cron files for anything unusual Changed all users passwords SSH was already secured (different port, no root access, etc.) but changed all settings and passwords. Checked and attempted a number of things in tcp/smtp Turned of all user machines on the network, no effect Stopped httpd Nothing worked So, basically I am looking for assistance in how to get rid if this. Get one of the offending messages, study headers and examine which is the way message is entering the system. Do you have any web site which could send a malformed form to qmail? To All, Thanks so far. To assist in getting to the bottom of this, here is a copy of the two types of messages I am getting. The first is the phising attack and the second it the rejection notices. First off, spamdyke indeed appears to be working well for you. A bit better than I would have expected even, but that's only based on a hunch (I've yet to run stats on my servers). The problem you face with the SA bayes database is that it's global, and what's spam to one customer might not be spam to another. My thinking is that using a user feedback mechanism to update bayes is not going to work well in multi-domain environments. Note, I do implement this sort of thing on QMT hosts that have single or few domains however. That is a good point. So would you recommend that I can bayes altogether? No. I'd still let it autolearn. I wouldn't bother with a feedback mechanism from users though. I think your best approach will be to gather feedback from your complaining users, and look at each instance individually. Agreed. I guess it would be nice if I had an easier way to get my customers to send me copies of the mail in question...I typically either have them send a snippet of the message headers, or forward the message as an attachment - however this doesn't always work, as more times than not they will simply forward the message, and then I lose the headers I need to look at. Times like that I really like the ones that are able to follow directions :-) Right. Sorry I can't help you there. ;) Examine what the SA score is presently on such items. The QMT stock values for SA are a bit loose, so tightening them down a bit will probably help. Personally, I use spam-hits=5.1 in simcontrol (rejects emails above this), and required_score 3.7 in the SA local.cf file, which is the score above which messages are tagged. YMMV, as I do use a tailored bayes db for scoring. Then have your users set up mail filters to put spam in a Junk folder, to get it out of their inbox. This will make a big impact on their perception of how much spam they receive. That would be greatif I knew that they'd all follow through and do that. Its definitely worth educating them on how to do so, but can you think of a way with (KISS in mind) that I could do this from my end? On other systems I've used procmail in the past to drop the spam into a specific folder, but it seems like there has got to be a few different ways to do it. See the spambox option in QMT. (I'd forgotten about this) IIRC, you need to rebuild qmailadmin to get that feature. -- -Eric 'shubes' - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. For example, what would be the best way to train SA on servers that are handling hundreds of domains? Our gateway servers don't actually have the users or mail stored on them, they simply accept mail for the domains listed in rcpthosts, and send them to the appropriate servers using smtproutes. So I'm not sure how this factors in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Casey While I agree with Eric that what might be one persons spam and not another. I have found that the SPAM filter in Thunderbird is very effective at catching just SPAM. I would like to add those rules to my toaster to enhance it's SPAM catching ability. Now with many spammers using correct DNS entries it's getting by Spamdyke. Can we export/import those filters to the toasters capabilities of culling SPAM? It is still placed in a SPAM folder and can be periodically checked by customers to ensure ham is not getting tossed, so I dn't see it being a real bad thing. I'm not familiar with TBird's spam filtering, but I don't expect migrating it to the server would be as simple as adding rules. I could be wrong though. [qmailtoaster] QMT -- CHKUSER_ALLOW_SENDER_CHAR_3 Dovecot Question
Hi all, I know that the CHKUSER_ALLOW_SENDER_CHAR_3 setting is on the wishlist and the change has been proposed, but I just wanted to see when this might end up as a stock setting in QMT? Also, I've seen mention of using Dovecot instead of Courier by default in QMT...any timeline on this one? I'm hoping to replace Courier with Dovecot on my Front-end boxes for my QMT cluster, and it would be nice to not have to worry about this turning into a problem next time I need to update. What needs to be done in order to get Dovecot added as a stock package into QMT? How can I help?
