Hi Eric,

ezmlm stuff will appear as an individual user folder within the domain. The
folder has the name of the mailing list and all relevant content will be stored
in special subfolders.

So, backing up all domains will also backup ezmlm!

Martin

RE: [qmailtoaster] qtp-backup

2011-03-29 Thread Patrick Ring
I find it has been server-dependant (...age, load, amount of storage).
My storage is about half of what you have, and I know it seems to take
around :45mins. ...though the servers here are not new by any means (HP
Proliant DL320 G3's).

The process, if I remember correctly, makes the copy of the data by
using a compression statement (tar/gz). It could be the compression
that is taking a while (especially on older equipment).

Subject: [qmailtoaster] qtp-backup

I was just curious. I am testing qtp-backup to see how long it runs. I'm
currently at 1 hour and 25 minutes and still going. Current directory
(/backup/qmailbkup) size is 7.2 Gig (/home/vpopmail/domains is 16 Gig
uncompressed). Is this normal? Am I running to correct/best/fastest
backup script?

My goal here is to put qtp-backup (or the best backup script) into a
cron job that runs every night, then after waiting MORE than the amount
of time it takes to run the qtp-backup script, rsync the backup file(s)
over to a another server.

Thanks,

Scott

  Or you can edit the qtp-backup script and change line number 172 to look
  like this:
  -p$mysql_password \

Thanks that did work.

It appears that when we keep a few days worth of backups in our
/backup/qmailbkup directory, that the old backups are being included
when the script condenses all the individual backups into 1 file. How
would we modify the qtp-backup script so it only condenses down the
current backup information into one file and leaves the previous backups
alone?

We are setting up the server so the qtp-backup script runs each night
using our /etc/crontab file. Then we copy the backup file to an external
USB hard drive. We also have lines to delete out the backups that are
older than 3 days on the server itself and older than 14 days on the
external USB hard drive.

In case other people are interested in backing up to an external USB
Drive -- We do this with the following lines in our /etc/crontab file:

# backup the qmailtoaster data files including squirrelmail plugins
05 2 * * * root /usr/sbin/qtp-backup

# copy today's backup file to USB drive to the postofficeBkups directory
32 03 * * * root find /backup/qmailbkup/* -type f -name '*' -mtime -1
-exec cp {} /mnt/usbdrive/postofficeBkups/ \;

# delete local mail backups more than 3 days old
32 04 * * * root find /backup/qmailbkup/ -type f -cmin +4320 -exec rm -f
{} \;

# delete mail backups more than 14 days old (from time changed) on
external USB drive
01 05 * * * root find /mnt/usbdrive/postofficeBkups/ -type f -ctime 14
-exec rm -f {} \;

Sharon,
Rather than putting each command as a separate cron entry and having to
worry about timing, it would be a better practice to put all of the
commands in one script, then invoke the script with a single crontab
entry. The /usr/local/bin/mybackup script would look like this:

#!/bin/sh
# script to backup qmt, and manage backup files
#
# do the backup
qtp-backup
#
# copy today's backup file to USB drive to the postofficeBkups directory
find /backup/qmailbkup/* -type f -name '*' -mtime -1 \
  -exec cp {} /mnt/usbdrive/postofficeBkups/ \;
#
# delete local mail backups more than 3 days old
find /backup/qmailbkup/ -type f -cmin +4320 \
  -exec rm -f {} \;
#
# delete mail backups more than 14 days old (from time changed)
# on external USB drive
find /mnt/usbdrive/postofficeBkups/ -type f -ctime 14 \
  -exec rm -f {} \;
exit 0

Then you can start the whole process with a single crontab entry:
05 2 * * * root /usr/local/bin/mybackup
and you don't need to worry about one step finishing before the next one
is executed.

Be sure that your script file's execute bits are turned on:
# chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/mybackup

If the exact time of day isn't critical, you can alternatively put your
script in the /etc/cron.daily/ directory, and it will run every day at
4am, and you won't have to change the crontab file at all.

Hope that helps. (and thanks again!)

We have tried making some changes to the following files, but have not
gotten everything right because it still is not working:

 /usr/sbin/qtp-config
 /usr/sbin/qtp-backup
 /opt/qmailtoaster-plus/bin/qtp-config
 /opt/qmailtoaster-plus/bin/qtp-backup
/home/vpopmail/etc/vpopmail.mysql

Can someone please tell us specifically which file(s) we need to
change and specifically which lines to change (with an example of what
we should change it to) so it will not prompt for the vpopmail user
password but use the specified root password?

Also, we would like to have it back up automatically each day. Do we
just need to add the following line in our /etc/crontab file to make
it run at 4 am each day:

*4 * * * root /usr/sbin/qtp-backup

Thank you in advance

It should not ask for the password. It will read it from
/home/vpopmail/etc/vpopmail.mysql
You need to run the script as the root user so that it can read the data
from the file.
If you are still having problems you can edit the
/opt/qmailtoaster-plus/bin/qtp-backup file, and change these lines:

# MYSQL variables
mysqlfile=/home/vpopmail/etc/vpopmail.mysql;
mysqlhost=`cut -d\| -f1  $mysqlfile`;
mysqlport=`cut -d\| -f2  $mysqlfile`;
mysqluser=`cut -d\| -f3  $mysqlfile`;
mysqlpswd=`cut -d\| -f4  $mysqlfile`;
mysqldb=`cut -d\| -f5  $mysqlfile`;

Just change mysqlhost to mysqlhost=localhost
mysqluser to mysqluser=root
mysqlpswd to mysqlpswd=password
mysqldb to mysqldb=vpopmail

Hi Patrick,
I found rsync not to be very reliable.
I use the built in backup for the qmail server.
Then I copy the whole tar ball over to a second server using scp ( scp
*.tar r...@192.168.11.1:/var/CommuniGate

On the second server I use the qmail built in restore, works great.
I also put the howto on the wiki, do a search for Automated backup.

Re: [qmailtoaster] Qtp-backup script mods?

2009-06-29 Thread Eric Shubert

I also rsync the /home/vpopmail/domains directory.

I've been thinking that I'd like to see some flexibility built in to
qtp-backup. Like separating the user from the config data to begin with,
which would be a good start. It could then be used with rsync more
effectively.

Anyone care to tackle this?

Patrick Ring wrote:

That would make sense... Barring no changes have occurred to the
accounts/domains on the server.

I guess at that point an rsync/rdiff of the /home/vpopmail/domains on an
hourly basis would be effective for the basic data and then on a daily
basis mirror/sync the rest of the data (mysql, qmail control,
squirrelmail, etc).

Thanks,
Patrick Ring

Just a thought since my backup files are typically 5+GB and growing,
an rsync has to move the whole file every time and not just the diffs
since the files names and such are different on each backup.

Another possibility I've been looking into for a direct mirror is
changing the tar statements into either rsync or rdiff-backup
statements (once again losing the date-code variables).

Any thoughts, or pitfalls?

Usually when I have to start thinking of things like on systems, I just
rsync the /home/vpopmail/domains dir. Only move files that need to be
moved that way, and rsync will gzip compress on the fly anyway.

Without seeing what is changed in the script, I cannot really say.
You may have a corrupted field in the dir_control table from what the

It's remarked pretty well plus the script isn't complicated. You should be
able to follow what it's doing fairly easily. It's simply copying the files
to a bunch of RARs and then RARing them into one big RAR.

  The simplicity of it is the best part.

It compresses all the mail on the system so that when you restore you
retain all messages. Depending on how many messages (and their size -
keep in mind attachments) it can take a while. My main system that I run
my domains on takes 75 minutes or so.
You can always open another session and run top to see that gzip is

  It compresses all the mail on the system so that when you restore you
 retain all messages. Depending on how many messages (and their size - keep
 in mind attachments) it can take a while. My main system that I run my
 domains on takes 75 minutes or so.
  You can always open another session and run top to see that gzip is still
 running.

Jake,
Was there a reason you didn't include the tcp.smtp file in the backup? That
looked like the only file that didn't get moved when I moved my post office a
couple weeks ago.

Phil

 At the time I did the last change, the tcp.smtp file was undergoing
 changes as QMT evolved. I was also using it to upgrade systems to newer
 versions at the time and old tcp.smtp files would not work with the
 newer system, so I left them out. I figured the default would work fine
 for most applications, so did not include it.
 I'll make a note and include an option to restore it in the next release.
