Is Gabe a candidate for a neuro implant to control his seizures? I've seen
some
remarkable success in the last few years with neuro stimulators and the
reduction

Gabe has been ill so I haven't posted for a while. He had close to 300
seizures in October. Fortunately most of them were mild (still hell for
him). After he got the kidney stones out that were causing the AD they put
him on an antibiotic. It was the wrong antibiotic and he got a raging UTI.
After they got the right antibiotic and increased seizure meds things are
calming down and he is starting to recover. God he is strong and deserves
great admiration. He is the teacher that we all love. In other words he is a
kick ass man.

Re: [QUAD-L] Coughing

2005-11-08 Thread wheelchair

Hi Theo,

Many times, quads need help or assistance with coughing. Actually the
diaphragm
needs a short pull to assist in the coughing process. Physical Therapist,
are excellent trainers in the process as you need to support the diaphragm and
not the
rib cage.
Thumping on the back is also good for loosening phleme. But you better know
what you are doing again, to prevent serious injury.

Several weeks earlier I mentioned on this
list a bean pillow called “Bed Buddies”. You microwave them for one minute, and
they hold heat up to a half hour.
If I'm shivering in my chair or bed we inside a blanket or towel (to keep
the heat in longer and to avoid burning my skin) place it around my shoulders,
and the shivers immediately vanish.
You can buy them at: Walgreen’s, or online at:
https://www.reliefmart.com/

My wife, for our anniversary, bought me a Verano Maxi-Heater for my
desk. She found it on the Consumer
Watch List. It’s small and energy efficient, and costs around $25. There are several settings along with a
thermostat that is remarkably effective. After a few adjustments, depending,
obviously, on the temperature of the room or how cold you feel at the moment, it
will turn on and off, blowing a natural, scentless, comfortable heat. It's not
one of those dangerous space-heaters that glow. She bought it at Wal-Mart.

I was at the local fair and someone was selling
these heat gell pads, like the kind you microwave and they stay hot for an hour.
Except these you did not microwave. You squeezed this hard button thing inside
it. It then gets hot (130d) for 90 minues or so. What's cool is you can get it
hot when you want. So if you areout and get cold, you squeeze and it's
hot. Then you can reuse it. Boil it and it's ready to use when you need it. I'm
buying a few to keep in my backpack.

Not exactly an accurate portrayal of events. The WEBMASTER received the letter and responded on his own beliefs and not the practices of ABC:

Dear Mr. Neugent:
We apologize for the e-mail message that was sent to you with comments that reflect neither the view of ABC nor of its executives. Viewer mail is traditionally handled by our Audience Information department for response. Your message was inappropriately handled by a programmer from ABC.com. I want to assure you that the response that you received does not in any way reflect the views of ABC Television, and most importantly is not at all consistent with the manner in which KATV, our valued partner in Little Rock, would ever treat their audience/community members.
Unfortunately, as in any organization, there are bound to be a few individuals that step out of line. To that end, we completed a comprehensive investigation into the matter earlier this afternoon. While the individual was deeply contrite and wanted to apologize to you, we felt that his actions were reprehensible and terminated him immediately.
Specifically in response to your original concerns regarding the subject of homosexuality in our programming, the ABC programming department has tried to treat such subjects in a sensitive manner. We recognize that we are serving a large, diverse audience with a wide range of attitudes towards all types of entertainment programming. We believe that programs thoughtfully reflecting social issues existing in our present society constitute proper television faire. We appreciate your original comments and take serious note of your thoughts on the potential direction of future story lines.
We are glad that you brought the e-mail incident to our attention. We truly regret that this happened, and we hope you understand by our actions that we will not tolerate this kind of behavior from any member of our staff.
Finally, I would like to once again add that the response that you received should in no way be attributed to our partner in Little Rock, KATV. As you well know, KATV has been the news and public affairs leader in Little Rock for years, and will be for many more. A finer, more committed television station does not exist. I would not want their reputation to suffer in any way due to our mishap.
Please accept our apologies and regrets.
Sincerely,
Daren Benzi ABC Television Network

I did something crazy this weekend. 5pm Friday, I drove down to southern
Florida and
arrived at 7pm on Saturday Night. Slept 8 hours and took off Sunday morning
at 8am
and was back in Chicagoland Monday Night by 7pm to watch Monday Night
Football.
I'll never do that again. The only social thing I did was stopping at a
Fruit Stand in
Florida and picked up 3 bushels of fresh oranges and a big bag of ruby
grapefruits.
80 miles an hour down there and back. Man did I see the Mobil homes being
towed
down 65, 24 and 75 by the FEMA trucks. Must have seen 1000 of them during the
entire trip. I wouldn't suggest trying this to anyone. Port St. Lucie was
my destination.

I don't think the gods have anything to do with it. It's mankind's doing. People have thought we've been "in the last days"
for 2 thousand years. What we see now is just different. Deep study of history shows one that.

TEOTWAWKI = The end of the world as WE know it. Hell... half the population or more thought it was
going to happen via the the year 2000 and computers freezing all over leaving hospitals to you name it
killing people from data loss ... geeez.

We don't need any more prophets telling us when the end of the world AS WE KNOW IT will or will not happen.

Very subtely (yet LOUDLY obvious to us) the commercial world and all of TV world is doing the same thing
to the white, straight, male population now. The pendulum has swung way back around and in so many ads, sit-coms,
etc ... the white, straight, male population are made to look like fools. Or are absent altogether.

As you well know, KATV has been the news and public affairs leader

A drain sponge is identical to a gauze
pad, it is just precut.

Hi, I wear a piece of guaze cut to the center then taped on around
the supra-pubic area---how do you wear the drain sponge ? is pad the same,
just cut and fit it around the tube over the hole? Just curious about
the sponge-- wondering if it may be better than taping on guaze pads.

  Thanks,

Re: [QUAD-L] Dragon?

2005-11-08 Thread tahouston

I have used the basic dragon and I have used a
professional dragon (version seven). With the professional version you
have use of more commands using the Internet, the ability to use a dictate
machine to transfer speech files, use with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access,
more shortcuts, the ability to train your own commands, filling out Internet
forms, opening and closing programs easier, larger vocabulary, and more options
to control speech. The training is a little bit more intense but pretty
easy and straightforward. Writing Web addresses and e-mail addresses are a
lot easier also. I am a C5-C6 complete and I type with a typing splint
however I use it less than 5% of the time when using Dragon NaturallySpeaking
Professional during an entire session all about three to four
hours.

There looks to be differernt versions of Dragon
Naturally Speaking 8, Professional, Medical, Legal. It implies the
Professional is better for the disabled? If so, why?

I see no need to upgrade every year. Every
two to three versions have worked very well for me.

You might want to try asking Dragon that question directly.
By email or phone.

I'm starting to use Dragon ASAP. I've had it for 8 yrs,
updating each version, but
never use it. I have version 8 already (Professional ... the
others are add-ons)
to go.
