Re: [QUAD-L] Hotels (my horror story)
Same thing happened to me my first trip, my back up cath had a bad balloon but lucky for me I was at an ADAPT rally and literally surrounded by quads which wasn't their first trip. To keep it short, I ended up clogging a catheter late in the evening and of course I was thinking ahead, so I had packed a new catheter and catheter changing tray. As I walked my PCA through each step, imagine my horror when I watched the tube, which fills up the balloon, in the catheter virtually explode just below the syringe insertion point. Knowing this catheter was completely useless, I almost in hysteria when I asked my sister-in-law where they had placed the clogged catheter and she revealed it had just been thrown away. Not knowing what to do, I contemplated trying to get to the nearest hospital, but ended up pulling the old catheter out of the garbage, cleaning it as thoroughly as possible, irritating it like there was no tomorrow until it was finally cleared of the obstruction, and then we reinserted the catheter. Of course I ended up getting a UTI, however, at least I didn't have a stroke because of the dysreflexia. Needless to say, now if I'm going to travel anywhere I have at least two backup catheters. But we could not get into the room because of the security lock. We had to call maintance to come in and use a special tool to get the door open. The bad thing was that he was on a vent in the room by himself. We were terrified that he would pop off or need to be suctioned before we could get in. You never know what can happen when you travel..make sure you have 2 days worth of supplies and at least 1 extra of any piece of equipment that you use at home. I sit fine in my old chair, but this one has a center post leg rest, instead of individual leg rests. I like a center post one better, but you do sit better if there are 2 leg rests. But when you have individual electric leg rests, each leg rest must get plug into the chair. So its a hassle getting them on and off. The center post can just lower and tuck back under the chair. I can tell it is a bit faster than my TDX3, but so much smoother to drive. I think Im going to like the different back on it a lot. Instead of a basic square padded back, this one has the top corners cut off. So your shoulders have room to move around. It should be delivered within the week. Joan, are you sure edema isn't a side effect of some drug you are on. Swelling fingers is often a sign your kidneys aren't functioning up to par. I have found that when my fingers are sweling, my lungs are next to fill with water. john -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Wed, 7 Feb 2007 3:49 PM Subject: RE: [QUAD-L] dr.G (Friday night lights) Hi Joan, My fingers curled enough that I can grasp a pop-can and hold it in what looks to be a natural grasp. It didn't work, so I decided that fat fingers were better than fat fingers inside gloves. LOL. my G/F just brings the cage along when we travel lol... bad joke. I just think hotels will do and should do anything to make their customer happy... if they want to be in business. Eddie
