Re: [QUAD-L] SLEEP

2008-04-11 Thread John S.
Dan, I avoided taking any narcotic drugs for years while I worked. By 2000 my
deforming was becoming really noticeable. I was regularly going to have spurs
ground off. I lean dramatically to the right. I was overdoing tylenol and advil
when the doctor gave me hydrocodone. I'd be shaking and drenched in sweat and
one vicodin ended all that in about ten minutes.
As time passed I started needing more. I take as much as 8 5/500's a day and
some days 4 10mg's of valium. The valium works well when I'm having anxiety
attacks that usually preceed AD. Since they modified my chair to straighten me
out, the doctor easily realized I needed oxycodone. I rarely take more than one
a day but I can take two and just wednesday I had to. My lower back felt like
it was on fire. These are feelings I haven't really had since becoming a quad.
I knew my body was in pain by the sweating and AD. The high blood pressure was
becoming serious a couple years ago when I started taking atenelol to control
it.
If I'm layed on my sides for just a few minutes it will cause me to have
seizures with dramatic blood pressures and irregular heartbeat. My hips no
longer have any cartiledge and my pelvis never healed real well after my
accident.
This makes the idea of removing spurs from my spine real iffy. I can't not lay
on my back and laying on my belly was ruled out while getting x-rays. I don't
remember what happened but I came to in the ER and intibated (sp?). I was upset
because I had a DNR on file. if I lay completely flat on my back I have trouble
breathing, so I'm running out of positions.
My doctor understands that I just want to be comfortable and able to get in my
chair as long as poossible.
If your syrinx is moving upward and your losing function they may decide to
treat it.
If your suffering with more pain then I'd suggest taking more hydrocodone. At
some point it will no longer work. You will need a stronger med. Use them as
you must but never OD on them. (that is just 3)
I really wish you the best. I know that I'd have done a lot of things
differently if I knew it was going to become this painful. I've had a DNR for 3
years now. I expect it to be respected the next time. I'm not suicidal. I just
feel I've been through enough and I too often the pain isn't treatable.
We are all different and feel differently about this matter.
I hope your pain isn't like what I feel.
I take them everyday and I'm sure I'm addicted to them all. There is no guilt
to me. I never get what people call a buzz. It is just what I need to do to
live.
I hope that is some help to you. I don't expect everyone to agree with my
choices.

I wish you the very best with your pain,
john

Re: [QUAD-L] SLEEP

2008-04-11 Thread Lori Michaelson
I am in chronic pain all the time as well. Like Corie Jones (a list member)
we can't find anything that is of real help. I have run the gamut of
narcotics, tens units, heating pads, etc.. I was on OxyContin since late
1998 or early 1999 until January of last year when my insurance company
stopped paying for it. Which was just as well as I do not think it was
helping. It was terrible getting off of it but I finally did and then
noticed not much of a difference so I was right. Strangely enough though...
the narcotics seem to help with the spasms more than any other drug for
spasms.

Anyway, Vicodin is just a hydrocodone with Tylenol. Hydrocodone Bitartrate
and Acetaminophen = Vicodin. Oxycodone is it much different from
hydrocodone either. My husband just had some surgery and the doctor gave
him Vicodin him for pain. He took it right after surgery but it just made
him drowsy which allowed him to sleep through the pain. Since then he began
to take ibuprofen (Advil) every four hours instead. But the pain got worse
again today so you broke down and took a couple of Vicodin which is allowing
him to sleep at least.

In sum, I am glad that I am off the narcotics for the most part and I just
learn to live with the pain. Keeping busy is the only thing that helps
along with sleeping. By the time I have warmed up* really good* in bed
before sleep ... I put an ice gel pack on my back which freezes the pain
there and allows me to sleep. I am still on amitriptyline at bedtime for
sleep as well.

And the wonderful warmth of the Southwest Sun helps me immensely! It is
sunny and 72° here today.

Hello all dragon people,
I just got my Dragon dictate up and running. I am enjoying
it very much as a matter of fact, I am using it right now to write this
e-mail. The headset seems to be a bit tight and I was wondering if any of
you had any solutions to loosening up the tightness of the headset. I have
tried stretching it and stretching it ever so gently with a bit of force.
I'm very tempted to hold it over an open flame so that I can melt the
plastic of the headset so it would be more pliable. But first I thought I
would ask you guys.
Thanks in advance, Bobbie

I don't have a regular sleep schedule either... I found that I'm awake for
about 36 - 40 hours then sleep for about five or six hours then start over
again.. I'm sure it's not healthy for me I'm not really sure why like that..
I tried Lunesta but it didn't have much effect on me.

addition to that ---the American defecit is costing about a Million Dollars

If America was a company we'd fire the CEO!
It's not just the Iraq war, do you know how much money each year on the War
on drugs?
It's close to a 20 billion dollar budget a year spent on drug control.
They're doing a great job too, drugs are more readily available and cheaper
than ever!
Before we went to war in Afghanistan Heroin was barely heard of there but
since then they are now selling 80% of all Heroin in the world.
Sounds kind of fishy to me, but the war on drugs sounds very profitable on
both sides now.
Did you know that marijuana is now the leading cash crop in America?

I better stop I could on and on about this crap!
You should watch a movie called "Cocaine Cowboys" and see how the government
really fights the war on drugs.

Niether the war in Iraq or the war on drugs are what they said they were for
and anyone that says they are have fallen for the bait.

addition to that ---the American defecit is costing about a Million Dollars
a Minute JUST FOR THE INTEREST PAYMENT ONLY !Why can't our government
cut back for a while and PAY down some on that defecit so a large part of
our tax money don't go to DEFECIT INTEREST payments ?? Man if we ran OUR
households in this way-we would all be bankrupt. It's really sad the
shape we are getting into- We all must balance our checkbooks or be
homeless Do any of you think or worry about our future with the
needless pork and waste our congress keeps approving??? I know I do.

Speaking of money? the recent write-down by Citibank of 12 Billion is an
effort to clear off junk from their balance sheets so they can get back to
"banking business" stuff.? Their balance sheet has a total of 2.2 Trillion
dollars on it so 12 billion represents 1/2 of one percent of their balance
sheet.? So far we are approaching the 500 Billion dollar mark of money spent on
the Iraqi war in the past 6 years.? Pretty amazing numbers huh?.?

[QUAD-L] Dragon Dictate question

2008-04-11 Thread Bobbie299
Hello all dragon people,
I just got my Dragon dictate up and running. I am enjoying it very much as a
matter of fact, I am using it right now to write this e-mail. The headset
seems to be a bit tight and I was wondering if any of you had any solutions to
loosening up the tightness of the headset. I have tried stretching it and
stretching it ever so gently with a bit of force. I'm very tempted to hold it
over
an open flame so that I can melt the plastic of the headset so it would be
more pliable. But first I thought I would ask you guys.
Thanks in advance, Bobbie

[QUAD-L] heating blankets

Hey gang,
I used heating blanketsfor a couple years until I had an incident with them.
Apparenty I rolled a little to my side one night and the blanket got between my

then on I just used a very thick comforter. To me the risk of a heating blanket
when you cant feel is to high.

Hi Dana, I take amitriptyline to sleep, at first they start you on 10mg but
can move it up to 50mg or more if needed. Some say it leaves them a bit groggy

instead take Ambien,,, I think by changing some nights it keeps their effect
working better.

Re: [QUAD-L] dangers

I carry a small bag on the back of my chair to hold water and other
essentials. Anything that I consider valuable or of absolute importance by
Kerry and two small pouches on the sides of my chair, just under my arms.
That way if someone's trying to get into them I know about it.

The bell is a good idea, but it would probably drive me crazy. Too many
rough roads, and sidewalks. My wheelchair has enough noise is already. :-)

I went to my sleep doctor and I was told that they are very slow to put
drugs on the market for sleeping problems and they have been waiting for a
another new drug for quite some time. They had to increase my trazodone to
100 mg
, and it could go up as high as 200 although it can go higher, but my doctor,
who is in charge does not do. I had to have a nurse practitioner, because
she was too busy to get me in on my six month appointment. I had called the
week before to tell her that it was not working the dose at 50 mg. There
drugs and then decided to take the off take me off all of them so I asked for
her. so I went for a while I first I had to go to another doctor in her
practice, because she was booked, he tried beyond about three different
medications
and the know what to do, so he took me off everything, so I called my rehab
doctor and he gave me trazodone. I went for a period of time without much
sleep, while trying the three different medications, while with him until I
got
back on the trazodone. When I finally got into her, she added the ambien,
which helped for a while. Has anybody ever tried that combination together.
That what is working for you. I want to write all these down to let her know
the next time what others try. I'm glad they will add by a phone call, as
she is difficult to get into.

I hope to hear from some of you with the same problem, and how you handle. I
know I have asked this before but it was on my laptop that crashed several
months ago, and I lost everything. I had not backed up everything.
Thank you.
Dana

I really appreciate hearing everyone's experiences about MRSA as I was not
familiar with any of this.
you.

Actually wheelchair, you have hit on one of the primary reasons there is so
many impoverished people in this country. Keep in mind I'm excluding the
severely disabled community from the comment, for right now. I don't know
the exact stats, but I heard that the true rates of graduation from high
school are much lower than people realize.

For instance, here in Florida they do not count the dropouts when they are
touting their graduation percentage. It's an absolute travesty. It's
something were done to reform the education system properly in this country,
we would have a lot less problems. There are, however, many other social
factors which play into the graduation disgrace in this country. I am not a
sociologist, nor do I pretend to be, but there are several programs which
could be expanded and better funded to help end the cycle of poverty.

I am in the process of writing a blog about Idol Gives Back, but I'd like to
make it a little more factual than I have so far.

Basically the premise of my blog is that if Fox, news Corp., were really
concerned about giving money to charity they would not have been showing
paid commercials during Tuesday night's broadcast. I have searched
throughout the Internet to determine if the proceeds from the advertisements
were turned back in to Idol gives back, but so far haven't been able to find
anything. If someone does, please let me know before I put my foot in my
mouth.

Enough of my drivel, I better get going.
Take care everyone,
Quadius

Forgot to mention. Every night when I lie down my body seems fine for about
30 minutes. Regardless how warm it is, I will be shivering while under a
mountain of blankets. I will continue to shiver for several hours until
falling asleep around 4:00am.
I feel this might have something to do with urinating but no idea what as I
have a supra-pubic. A similar period was experienced years ago but included
AD. A deposit in my penis removed resolved this for years.
