Well Dan,
I wouuld suspect the syrinx as the possible cause. Most spinal injuries
have some tingling sensations but they dont start 11 yrs post. When you get
your bladder situation straight I would get that syrinx checked with a closed
mri and looked at by at least one neuro. You might have to investigate getting
to craig hospital if you find the syrinx has grown consideribly.

Bladder Thumping, must be a guy thang, lol.  I've never known a woman to try
it.  Rare is thumping advised because it does not completely empty the bladder,
but does well it voiding a full bladder.  So you are always voiding about 80%
of your bladder and allowing the rest of the urine to populate bacteria.
Urologist like when the bladder is completely emptied.  I know of some old men
who are walking with impaired bladders that don't empty with each void.  They
too are prone to bladder infections and UTIs.

Remember that  at no time should you void more then 800 cc or urine without
stopping for 3-10 minutes, to allow the bladder to contract and prevent a
possible stroke.  But John, I'm sure that you heard that too.

Re: [QUAD-L] strange pains

2009-04-17 Thread John S.
After 33 years, I have almost constant pain. No tingling or pins and needles.
It is sharp pains that shoot through my back and a constant crushing pain. You
may not have developed a syrinx until the past few years. Virtually all quads
seem to have a syrinx. It creates pain by disrupting the flow of spinal fluid.
If the syrinx moves, it causes increased pain. If you start to loose more
function, the syrinx may be expanding upward on your spinal cord and that is
when you need to check it.
Someone put Mandelamine in a pill with vitamin C and it is marketed as UTI
CLEAR? Why didn't I think of that? I'm surprized it doesn't include probiotics
to fight infections that are driven by anti-biotic overkill of good bacteria. A
lkot of pain meds destroy good bacteria as well. I just use Bifordopholus and
acidopholus, but more complex bacteria can be purchased at health food stores.
The good bacteria will not only stop you from getting constipated or diarrhea,
but it becomes the dominant colony and keeps bad bacteria in check.
It never occured to me that people would take Mandelamine and not vitamin C.
The C creates an acidic environment and causes mandelamine to turn into
formaldehyde. It makes it very difficult for bacteria to survive in the
bladder. If you keep testing the Ph level of the urine, you can keep it working
very well.

RE: [QUAD-L] TRAINED BLADDER- Thumping/blood pressure

2009-04-17 Thread t crook
Yes I take one a day; it helps the Midodrine do it's job better, thus
maintaining a normal blood pressure. I have always had low blood pressure
(orthostatic hypo-tension); but with my muscle atrophy over the years the
vascular system just doesn't work as it should, so I had more lows. As we all
should know- blood pressure high or low is bad; highs we can stroke and lows we
can do damage to our organs, and both are hard on the heart. I was fatigued so
much with the lows that I didn't have any energy, now I feel better than I have
in years.

make people fall into a coma. I think it is great that you found something that

Back in ’88 they were teaching the tap and credae method; and it was not
working for me, until I started drinking beer on home visits. After several

gates opened and the urine process was so forceful it blew my condom cath clean
off of me. When I returned to the hospital I told my rehab doc about the beer
making me void on my own; and he prescribed me 3 beers a day (my rehab doc was
a marathon running non-drinker), now I just have a couple of beers every other
day. I have been cathed about 5 or 6 times in over 20 years (due to a full
bowel and the few bladder infections I have had), I’ve only had about three
bladder infections. I void about 300 to 500 cc’s each time I void and always
have residual; but I’ve been told that my mass amounts of water that I drink
doesn’t give bacteria a chance to grow. I recently had an abdominal/pelvic CT

that my kidneys and everything looked good, my BUN and Creatinine levels have
always been good as well. This way of voiding may not be for everyone; but any
invasive anything puts you at risk for infection.
Nearly 21 years later I still void on my own (I use the Freedom Active condom
cath and a leg bag) if I am going in somewhere for a long period of time, I
will tap whatever I can out.

But John, I'm sure that you heard that too.

train their bladder to empty fully. I haven't heard any of the younger quads

anti-biotics when they get other infections.
The other thing I've noticed is so many take anti-biotics and I'm hoping they

not occur if you replace the good bacteria that was just wiped by the medicine.
In studies, a healthy colony of good bacteria keep the bad bacteria in check by

Pain has been a major topic on the list and also a concern to my

many others with a spinal injury, our pain is simply dismissed. Of topic on
the Q-List is also longevity which brings me to my topic. My doctor has
ordered an MRI for my spine. Apparently the spinal column is susceptible to
change throughout the years after a spinal injury. Many of these changes
are pain related.

Perhaps my pain is of concern because by reducing it my night time AD is
also controlled. Something some place is askew. Along with Percaset, I
have just been given Fentanyl patches which release paim med over time
transdermal. I like this.

After 33 years, I have almost constant pain. No tingling or pins and
needles. It is sharp pains that shoot through my back and a constant
crushing pain. You may not have developed a syrinx until the past few years.
Virtually all quads seem to have a syrinx. It creates pain by disrupting the
flow of spinal fluid. If the syrinx moves, it causes increased pain. If you
start to loose more function, the syrinx may be expanding upward on your
spinal cord and that is when you need to check it.

Someone put Mandelamine in a pill with vitamin C and it is marketed as UTI
CLEAR? Why didn't I think of that? I'm surprized it doesn't include
probiotics to fight infections that are driven by anti-biotic overkill of
good bacteria. A lkot of pain meds destroy good bacteria as well. I just use
Bifordopholus and acidopholus, but more complex bacteria can be purchased at
health food stores.

The good bacteria will not only stop you from getting constipated or
diarrhea, but it becomes the dominant colony and keeps bad bacteria in
check.

It never occured to me that people would take Mandelamine and not vitamin C.
The C creates an acidic environment and causes mandelamine to turn into
formaldehyde. It makes it very difficult for bacteria to survive in the
bladder. If you keep testing the Ph level of the urine, you can keep it
working very well.

Well Dan,

I wouuld suspect the syrinx as the possible cause. Most spinal injuries
have some tingling sensations but they dont start 11 yrs post. When you get
your bladder situation straight I would get that syrinx checked with a
closed mri and looked at by at least one neuro. You might have to
investigate getting to craig hospital if you find the syrinx has grown
consideribly.

Hi!  How do you all drive your power chairs?  My husband is a c5,6 quad, 1 yr.
post.  He has limited use of some shoulder muscles, but not enough control of
his arm to work the joystick on his power chair.  A friend suggested getting
some kind of head control:  sip puff, chin control or head control.  When we
had the OT do an evaluation, she said he should get enough use back to drive
with his arm.  She suggested a T shaped joystick.  We just saw a U shaped
piece on another quad's joystick (someone made his 29 yrs ago).  He sets his
wrist in the opening and goes where he wants to.  The children and I drive my
husband around for now (our 2yr. old boy loves driving his Dad's chair - but he
runs into everything! so I don't allow him to.  He only drives when my back is

Hi Ray!

Hoyer, has been sold ... yet again. I talked with their chief tech
today and he advised me, the two straps you mentioned are No Longer
Available. The is a reason. Insurance underwriters, approved the product
back in
the 60's when liability laws did not apply to the product and how it was
used. As the Hoyer lift gained popularity in the enduser market, so did
customer abuse of the product. I'm sure it only takes one case before the
insurance people cast their decision to Quash that type of sling. If you
notice
today's slings with weave mesh which offers more protection and less risk
to it user and those doing the lifting. You are now more protected,
because of this.

You can always contact a manufacturer of cargo strapping to restore your
strap slings.

BTW, the same thing happened with scooter trunk lifts using cloth straps
for lifting. Today those cloth straps have been replaced by AirCraft
Quality Stainless Steel, braided wire.

The person who I talked with also expressed some concerns regarding the
possible Fatigue Factor of your lift after all these years of use. Depending
on the actual model and how much stress it has been exposed to over the
years you might consider..
