Bobbie,

When i was in the hospital with my initial injury in 98 i had a hole in the
side of my knee to the bone and they wanted to amputate. There is never a
reason to immediately amputate a limb unless the infection has set in and its
beyond hope and going to kill you . Many doctors and people in general think if
your paralyzed, you dont need the limbs anyway, so why mess with itjust
amputate. If  Britney Spears, Rihanna or the doctors mother had curled feet
they would never even bring up amputation. This quad girl needs to go to
another doctor or two or three until she finds one willing to direct her to the
rehab personnel that can deal with this.  Totally rediculous. Imagine how many
old folks and disabled have had limbs cut off simply because its the easy way
to go. god help this woman find help.

Hi All,
I was talking to a neighbor friend of mine, who is a C7 quadriplegic
female 38 18 years post. She just got back from the podiatrist who told her
that he may need to amputate her right foot because her rose have Severely
curled under. She was injured at age 17 and never wore shoes right from the
beginning because she wears size 11 And could never find shoes to fit.
I told her to get a second and third opinion before she did any drastic.
Has anybody ever had issues like this before?

thinking of driving home in my chair, but it was over 100 outside. My mother
was driving, and she could not walk that far. Of all days I did not bring my
phone. We were still part in the street, in a bike lane. We saw a garage of
some kind around the corner so I was about to get out when a cop pulled up. She
was going to call my insurance road side service when a 2nd cop pulled up. They
thought maybe after the tow truck took my van, thy could drive my mother and
follow me. There is a wheelchair taxi around here, but often long wait times.
Then the 2nd cop says, I can just push you home. Luckily it was a mostly a
straight road home. So the first cop got in my van to steer and the 2nd cop
pushed my van from his car (He had a nice

 Hello my friends,
Well, I made it to 40 years! Can NOT believe it. I'm
going out with family and friends to dinner to celebrate enduring
coping against adversity not going completely insane, not dying twice
and living to see 2 nieces born, 4 nephews born, 1 great niece and
3 great nephews. Experiencing some unbelievably hysterical
situations or experiences for instance; within 2 years post my chair
ad 2 fiats, so my sister still got me dressed on a gorgeous summer day
and put me in a wheel barrel. She put a folded blanket on the bottom,
sat me facing the handles and as a C,5,6,7 was able to stay safely
balanced as we proceeded through the day which included going to a
local bar where .… everybody knows your name. Needless to say we
needed not pay for one drink.
Went to my senior high school prom with a eye candy hunk of a man
5 years my senior whom I met on my 1 year anniversary. Lost my
virginity that night, laughing the whole night long … which is a
story in and of it's self.
Went to college, lived on campus 4 years post. At 9 years post I met
Pete, we just celebrated 30 years together. He is the love of my life
AND my soul caretaker 24/7/365 (not recommended).
I've learned to do needle point, crewel work, calligraphy, painting,
write and pioneered the peer counseling program at Kessler.
Camped cross country, 10,000 mile's in 1980 in my first van with my sister
for 8 weeks.

someone remove it until she gets here and urine will flow out.  Normally,
(over the course of the last almost 15 yrs) urine spasms out around cath so
I have never done that.  UNTIL TODAY! Urine wasn’t leaking out, I was
having spasms in my back, face and neck were fire engine red, my head was
POUNDING.  I thought “here we go, I’m gonna have a stroke” before she gets
here! Then I remembered, get the catheter out! My mom was able to get it
out and sure enough, urine leaked out. Hated to pee in my pants but when AD
is that bad……….it really didn’t matter!

Just wanted to share that if no urine is leaking out remove the catheter
because it’s stopping up the body’s natural route for urine to come out!
May have saved me from stroking out today!!

2013-03-13 Thread Mike Mills

My sphincter is completely removed. I wore a external condom for over 30yrs,
but
could no longer void my bladder. This led to hydronephrosis, which almost
caused my kidneys to shut down. I started intermittent cath. 4 times a
day, but this caused numerous infections. Dr recommended a sphincterotomy,
unfortunately I still could not void enough, so came the foley.

The Foley should be back flushed and irrigated, as the kidney is sending
this to the bladder, or the walls of the bladder lining is braking down.
Actually, it doesn't matter the cause, the Foley should be back flushed and
irrigated, with sterile waters.  a tad bit of vinegar might help.  The
person's URO should also be made aware of this and make medical recommendations
and orders. Perhaps the French should be enlarged.

In my experience when I am getting blocked up I get a liquefied stool without
any hard stool. It's different than diarrhea.

I don't know why you can't take a colonoscopy. It's difficult for
quadriplegics, but it can definitely be done. The protocol here is really
intensive and requires hospitalization.

Whenever I have problems like this, the first thing I do is double up on the
MiraLAX. Basically take a double dose. If that doesn't work, then I take the
MiraLAX and use about one third of a bottle of magnesium citrate (I believe
that's how you spell it).

This happens occasionally. Normally I have the other problem. Lately I've been
taking anti-diarrhea medication. This is where I can run in the problems
getting constipated, but I need to do it to be able to function right now.

I am blessed to have a friend who is charge nurse in a wound clinic and
deals with
the latest technology in wound healing.

On a previous sore,
she recommended using a new dressing with Safetac technology. (
http://www.molnlycke.com/us/Wound-Care-Products/US/Safetac-Technology/ ).
The dressing is called Mepilex Border dressing, (
http://molnlycke.com/Global/Wound_Care_Products/UK/Product%20Sheets/Advanced/Mepilex%20Border.pdf
 )
similar to what I have known as mini island dressing.  The difference
between the two dressings is the Border Dressing uses a tape that is silicon
based and does not damage the skin when removed or when you shift weight.
The border dressing has a telfa style center but is very thin.  A normal
dressing would have bunched in this area and the border dressing does bunch to
some extent, but less than the island dressing and is much less a
problem.

Everyone is aware of
the white skin that surrounds a wound as well as whiteness in the center of the
wound.

The whitish film that
is in the center of the wound is called bioberden   A product called
acticoat, was placed on the area then covered it with the border dressing.
Although manufacturer states that it can remain on seven days she recommends
only three or four days.  The acticoat contains silver which helps to
remove the white area and keep the area free of bacteria.  After the wound
is clearer of bioberden, we discontinued using acticoat and started to use
another product Puracol AG+ which also has silver in the product.  The
Puracol was covered with the Border dressing and remained on three or four
days. Puracol is a collagen product
(
http://www.allegromedical.com/wound-care-c541/puracol-plus-ag-wound-dressing-with-silver-p557629.html
 )
the collagen is
absorbed into the wound and promotes healing.

As I started to search
the Internet to purchase the border dressing and Puracol AG+, IMPORTANT MUST BE
AG+(with silver), I found some prices ridiculous.  One vendor had the
border dressings at a price of $75 but with a little searching I found them for
$25.  The same was true for the Puracol.

In addition we will be
using the silicone tape (

 )
instead of the Medfix tape.

Works for
me!

I got approved to move to a wheelchair accessible apartment.  I will be able to
take a bath wash my hair inside the bath tub.  Bake a cake - yeah no way!
But I could do it in my accessible kitchen.  I will have a dressing area a
separate bath room.

The bed room isn't big, just enough room for the bed.  The living room
kitchen area is huge. Everyone I have met there is happy and they are able to
leave their apt and sit in the common area visit.

There is no management on site.  There is a social worker there.

Here is what the apt is going to look like

I am so excited.

Waiting to make sure the mucus is out is one reason mine takes 2+ hours also.
Though that is one reason I don't mind waiting a bit longer for. I tried using
the commode chair, but it only made it worse. Extra sweating from sitting too
long and helper can't reach the dig-stim as well. I've tried every other day,
Mon-Wen-Fri, and Mon-Thur. I know your body needs a schedule, so I did it for a
long time. I noticed no real difference. I don't eat a lot, mainly a few snakes
and dinner. That might be 1 issue, but I do eat healthy foods mostly. I settled
for Mon-Thur just for convenience.

Unfortunately my bowel program has turned into a marathon match
lately.  Often it's almost 3 hours long, but I think a lot of this
is because we spend the last hour trying to make sure that we have
all of the mucus out of my system.  That way I don't have a mucus
attack the next morning when I get up.
