I've had my suprapubic for over 12 years. No side effects or problems. Keep the

I guess everyone is a bit different, so some may do things their own way. I
have had a suprapubic about 12 years now, I just use the large night bags all
the time-- at night just hang it on side of bed, during day just hang it facing
in towards my powerchair with my black leather carry pouch hanging over it to
help hold it in place. We empty it every morning and every night at bedtime. We
change the catheter once a month. The catheter or bag can be changed earlier if
you think it is needed but We rarely do anymore. Just always drink enough water
or fluids each day to keep everything flushed and working well. Dan H. ***

Anybody had good or bad experiences with a suprapubic? I'm wondering about
the initial installation operation as well as daily and monthly maintenance.
Do you use a leg bag or just plug it and empty it every 4 to 6 hours? What
are the "side effects" the doctors don't tell you about? Brutal honesty

RE: [QUAD-L] Mattress

2012-04-19 Thread william Ray

Last October I purchased an Invacare MA90Z lateral turning air mattress system.
Other than being noisy, I have no complaints so far. Paid approximately $3500
from Internet company (Healthcare For You). I had previously used Gaymar
systems which were much more expensive. They were bought out by Stryker
Medical. That system is no longer available. If you are looking for lateral
turning mattresses there are not very many choices. If I had it to do over
again I would have purchased the Invacare MA95Z which is an upgrade to the 90Z,
but is about $2000 more expensive.Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2012 17:01:47 +

dear Q, Don't Freak out. Last Sept. I had to get a supra-pubic catheter,a J
tube and a colostomy so they could remove part of my stomach. Now I wish I had
the colostomy long ago. 36 years of watching my diet. (wondering how I got a
damn ulcer). You have to let gas out of the bag now and then, it's called
burping it. I still use acidophylus to keep the stool well formed. That way I
can put two needle holes in the high side of the bag and not mess with burping
since I only get two aid visits a day and I can't burp it myself. I am using
more cologne. I wish you luck.

In the consultation for the ileovesicostomy the doctor noted that I had had a
previous doctor recommend that I think about doing a colostomy in the near
future. Well, now they're wondering if I want to consider doing a colostomy at
the same time I am having the ileovesicostomy performed. I'm about 90% sure
I'm going to have the ileovesicostomy, because I really don't see any
alternative.

As for the colostomy, everyone I talk to down here seems to think it's a good
idea, including at least one quadriplegic who has one as well as
ileovesicostomy.

When the doctor made this recommendation I was having a terrible time with my
bowels. Fortunately he was able to diagnose several of my problems and I have
improved quite a bit since that time. I am still having difficulties though.
The list of fruit and vegetables I can't eat or can only eaten very limited
quantities is much higher than the list the list I am able to eat. My lactose
intolerance has gotten progressively worse, to the point where I almost
completely have to eradicate dairy products if possible. I have difficulty
processing tomato sauces and am having trouble almost every time I go out to be
in a restaurant.

Let me put this into perspective. I don't really have problems with
incontinence, but when I do have problems it's usually terrible pain followed
up by very loose stool. My bowel program has gotten much longer over the last
year and a half. A lot of this is because my body produces a lot of mucus
after the stool has passed. We usually check about every 15 minutes and sadly
my bowel program is now averaging around 3 1/2 hours. We can probably cut it
down to two hours and 45 minutes if I didn't worry too much about the mucus and
then had my caregiver cleaned up in the morning, but she asked small fingers
and I also risk having the mucus attack while I am seated in the wheelchair if
I do this.

I'm leaning towards having the procedure done, but I haven't really heard that
many negatives other than the few comments I saw all on one forum. I know darn
well there's got to be negatives, so I'd appreciate if you could pass them on
to me.

One of the quadriplegics who I talk to last year told me about some sort of
burping, but he didn't elaborate. I do not have the ability to move my hands
or arms at all, so I don't know what would happen if I need to do something
like burping.

I'm going to continue to search the web, but I would appreciate some feedback.
You guys have been great on the ileovesicostomy and I really do appreciate it.
These are, as all of you know, decisions which we have to live with. Sure I
guess they are reversible, but I have known one person who had his colostomy
reversed after he went into remission and he had a horrific time getting his
bowels to work properly once again. In fact, he ended up in the ICU on life
support at one point.

Thanks everyone,

PS hopefully there are too many problems with this e-mail. I am in need of a

2011-06-25 Thread william Ray

Since my injury 11 years ago, I have been using the Gaymar turning air mattress
product. I am still using the product. I've had to replace leaky mattresses
occasionally. Gaymar is no longer in business. I am still using the system
however I know I'm on borrowed time before it fails. I'm in bed 24/7 and have
been very fortunate with no significant pressure sores and I attribute that to
the Gaymar system. I'm seeking suggestions for a replacement turning air
mattress product. I am hopeful of finding a product that sells a replacement
mattress standalone. I don't want to buy a new controller each time there is a
requirement for a replacement mattress.

This subject has been discussed several times in this group throughout the
years. But since I had a product I was satisfied with, I neglected to take
notes. If any of you have any recommendations/experiences, please respond.

is a joke! Have any of you experienced this Windows 7/Dragon problem and/or

I am sure that my situation is unique. I have now had the same aid from the

Over this period of time, it is only natural in my opinion, that he and I have

isn't needed, with his personal problems. The plus side is as a result of
being good friends he provides me with better service than I might otherwise

I guess my advice would be share information at a slow pace until you get a

This question is for those of you who have aids that are not not consumer
employed. I am attending college and am
3 hours away from home. How and where do you draw boundaries with your aids?
A lady I respect told me to keep our relationship a business one.

My problem is this in the past I have become friends with these women (it's
difficult not to.) But then I tart hearing about there problems
and our relationship is no longer a working relationship. Seems they take
that as a sign as they can come, do very little and
or take care of personal calls for instance. My dorm is a small area so I
hear the whole conversation. My aid spoke to her child's teacher
this am. She was on the phone over 5 minutes then when she got off began to
explain the difficulty she is having with her
daughter. It is not that I do not care I do! (Probably too nice for my own
good.) I just do not want to become someones counselor.
Do you listen but make no comment and hope she will keep info to herself?

I have been working on establishing boundaries. To protect them from me as
well as me from them. My last aid showed up with
booze on her breath. I told her boss but instead of confronting her employee
saying something like, "a consumer reported that they
smelled alcohol on your breath She told her "Shelly tolm me." then my
aid called me and it became personal. Anyway I just
want to do the right thing. How do you guys draw those lines or even set the
standards? How friendly or even how much
  info do you give up?

My "accident" was a blessing in many ways and I have learned many valuable
lessons these past soon to be 4 years.I am
grateful for all that I have been given and do believe it's my purpose to be
a blessing. That does not mean that I let people
get away with things that are unacceptable. Am I making a big deal out of
nothing? She is a sweet girl... I am going to "shut up"

I too am a quad C4 for the past 10 years. My immobility has made it
impossible for me to control my powered wheelchair. I'm looking at the
possibility of modifying it with a sip and puff control system.

Do you utilize this control system on your wheelchair? Would the
modification be achievable? How practical is the operation of a chair with
that type control system?

The environmental control system that I have utilized with my bed set up
uses a flexible non-metallic tubing. It is available from various suppliers
listed on the Internet. I have had excellent success using it and is very
practical.

If you have had any experience with CEU wheelchair operation, please help.

I have had a super pubic catheter for more than 13 years now, but I had
something happen on Saturday which has only transpired when I had a tremendous
amount of bladder stones. We were doing a routine catheter change, but the
catheter wouldn't fit in (22 French bard latex). Luckily I still have some
smaller catheters for when this transpired about two years ago. I ended up
going down to a 16 French. Now I'm sitting here scratching my head because
there shouldn't be any reason why it wouldn't fit into my stoma.

I have had a slight increase in sediment, but it really is extremely
nominal. In fact, I haven't really had sediment since I had those bladder
stones removed with a laser in January 2007. I thought it was a fluke thing
and I could probably try to put a 22 French in after 48 hours, but that didn't
work. Now I'm worried that I might clog this catheter. It is just so small
compared to what I'm used to and there has been a little bit more sediment in
my urine. I have been avoiding Mountain Dew since this transpired and I have
noticed my sediment hasn't increased (knock on wood).

Has anyone else had a problem with

catheters not going into their stoma during a normal catheter change?
Thanks for the input,

RE: [QUAD-L] Hours

2006-02-21 Thread Ray & Gwen
Dan,
I lived in Alberta, Canada and the way it works here is the bigger the city
of more you get. The smaller the city the less you get.
I'm on self-care management. It's better than hiring through an agency. The
agencies take all the money and you get less hours. On self-management I can
pay them what I want and get more hours. After my accident we moved to the
big city for four years. I was getting $3000 a month. We then moved to a
small town, and now I get $1800. It's not fair because my condition hasn't
changed. Alberta is the richest province in Canada, you would think they
could help a little more. Here PCA's get between $ 8 -- $10 hour. So you can
do the math. Hope this helps you out.

Re: [QUAD-L] falling asleep

Hi Dave,
I was wondering since you get up early, you go
to bed early too? If so do you get turned at night?
The reason I ask is because my devoted wife
does my turn at night and she is starting to burn out
after 10 1/2 yrs. I thought about not getting
turned, but I don't want to risk getting bed sores. I
can't get help for night turns. How many people
here don't get turned at night and don't have
bed sores?
Thanks,

I could drop off to sleep in a matter of minutes pre-SCI, and am still
the same way post.  I also wake up at 5:55 AM at the latest each

Re: [QUAD-L] Sterile H2O to flush catheters

2005-07-20 Thread william Ray

Earlier this month, I saw an urologist for the first time since my
catheterization five years ago.  Pior to my seeing him, I never flushed my
catheter and replaced it every four weeks.  He recommended that I flush
once  each day using warm tapwater and change it out every six weeks.

Vinegar kills a lot of bacteria.  Alot of people use it (with
water)  to wash out their urinary bags.  I used to ages
ago.  Now I use
a clorox/water solution because bleach will kill ANYTHING.

Also ... in the past ... I've had Uros suggest irrigating with
Clorpactin (prescription needed solution AND has SOME "clor" in
it).  Clorox, Clorine (pool cleanliness) all kills bacteria.

Another irragant I tried once (via a script) was Renacidin.
To cut down on gravel or sludge.

I was told by my local urologist to sterilize water by boiling
it.  My urologists at Hopkins told me to use saline.  For
those of you that use vinegar, I asked my local urologist and the 2
urologists I work with at Hopkins and they have never even heard of it
and told me not to insert anything but sterile water into my
bladder.  For my own curiosity, what is it supposed to do?

We know the reasons for invading Iraq. Sure wasn't for the WMD. Your country

farther into debt..Say like healthcare, unemployment, gun control just for

Closing the border only put yours on the unemployment line.

WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR THE
FOLLOWING SPEECH?

My Fellow Americans:
As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been
completed.

Since congress does not want to spend any more money
on this war, our mission in Iraq is now complete.

This morning I gave the order for a complete removal
of all American
forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within
30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the
names of countries
which have stood by our side during the Iraq
conflict. This list is short.
The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and
Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains everyone not on the first
list. Most of the
world's nations are on that list. My press secretary
will be distributing copies of both lists later this
evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately,
foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases
immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during
the first year alone will pretty much pay for the
costs of the Iraqi war.

The American people are no longer going to pour money
into third world Hell-holes and watch those
government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic?
Call France.

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to
redirect this money toward solving the vexing social
problems we still have at home. On that note, a word
to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will
hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends
from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try
France, or maybe
China.

To Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Yo, boys.
Work out a peace deal now. Just note that Camp David
is closed. Maybe all of you can go to Russia for
negotiations. They have some great palaces there. Big
tables, too. I am ordering the immediate severing of
diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and
Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are
retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin
towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in
Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets
to sites where those vehicles will be stripped,
shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever
treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of
thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets
tomorrow or watch your precious
Benzes, Beamers, and limos be turned over to some of
the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List
2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each
other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off
for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his
entire corrupt government really need an attitude
adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and
infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am
going to put em? Yep, border security. So start doing
something with your oil.

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the
NAFTA
treaty - starting now.

We are tired of the one-way highway.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare
and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of
isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin."

Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a
decent life around the
world has only earned us the undying enmity of just
about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate
hunger in America. It is time to eliminate
homelessness in America. It is time to eliminate
World Cup Soccer from America. To the nations on List
1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we
won't forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought. Drop dead.

God bless America.
Thank you and good night.

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are
reading it in English,
thank a soldier.

  The Sea Inside is out
on DVD & video now. It was nominated for many awards this past season, and
won the Oscar for best foreign language film.  That one is directed by
the man who made "The Others," but it is in Spanish.  It is based on
the true story of Ramon Sampedro, a quadriplegic who battled
in court for the right to end his own life.  It is an extremely
  moving film.

  Murderball is a
documentary.  It will be in theaters this summer, so will likely not be
on DVD until this coming fall, but look out for it - it's excellent.

anything below my shoulders. Next thing I remember is a flashlight shining
through a hole in my windsheild where a mule deer had tagged me. They were

They went to the neaest ranch and called for help, I was alert and

paramedics, loaded into the ambulance (where my temp was 91 deg) and
taken down to Rapid City. After x-rays etc I heard a doc tell my old

here I am 9 years later with a college educdation, and hoping some type of

technologicaldevelopment worldwide for the past few hundred years. By
placing a ban onfederal funding, Bush is by defacto placing a ban on the

is a lot of hope for uses of adult stem cells. However, there  is no
proof of anything until after a discovery is made! That is why is called
research!  "Scientific proof" is the result of adiscovery made
through research, not the precursor of it! There was noscientific proof
that a wheel would be more efficient than simply draggingthings around,
until someone made a wheel and then by direct observation itwas known to

Christopher Reeve accomplished more in the last nine years than most
people do in a lifetime, despite unreal suffering and overwhelming odds. He
authored books, directed and acted in movies, and worked relentlessly as a
speaker and advocate. In his situation, despite the money and fame, I
would have withered away. His spirit seemed indomitable, and it pains me to
hear other quads question his motives and criticize his outspokeness.
He was a true hero to me and millions of others. I thank God for
Christopher Reeve and I thank God that he did not go gentle into that good
night. He raged against the dying of the light until the very end. Perhaps he
did not make a "declaration of faith," but if anyone deserves to be
sitting -- No, make that standing! -- at the right hand of God today, it is
Christopher Reeve. I thank god for his life and undying spirit. This world and
