We empty it every morning and every night at bedtime. We change the catheter once a month. The catheter or bag can be changed earlier if you think it is needed but We rarely do anymore. RE: [QUAD-L] Mattress
Last October I purchased an Invacare MA90Z lateral turning air mattress system. Other than being noisy, I have no complaints so far. Paid approximately $3500 from Internet company (Healthcare For You). I had previously used Gaymar systems which were much more expensive. They were bought out by Stryker Medical. That system is no longer available. If you are looking for lateral turning mattresses there are not very many choices. If I had it to do over again I would have purchased the Invacare MA95Z which is an upgrade to the 90Z, but is about $2000 more expensive.Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2012 17:01:47 + From: linda...@comcast.net To: quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: [QUAD-L] Mattress I know this question has been asked many times but my mattress stopped working. In the consultation for the ileovesicostomy the doctor noted that I had had a previous doctor recommend that I think about doing a colostomy in the near future. Well, now they're wondering if I want to consider doing a colostomy at the same time I am having the ileovesicostomy performed. I'm about 90% sure I'm going to have the ileovesicostomy, because I really don't see any alternative. As for the colostomy, everyone I talk to down here seems to think it's a good idea, including at least one quadriplegic who has one as well as ileovesicostomy. When the doctor made this recommendation I was having a terrible time with my bowels. Fortunately he was able to diagnose several of my problems and I have improved quite a bit since that time. I am still having difficulties though. The list of fruit and vegetables I can't eat or can only eaten very limited quantities is much higher than the list the list I am able to eat. My lactose intolerance has gotten progressively worse, to the point where I almost completely have to eradicate dairy products if possible. I have difficulty processing tomato sauces and am having trouble almost every time I go out to be in a restaurant. Let me put this into perspective. I don't really have problems with incontinence, but when I do have problems it's usually terrible pain followed up by very loose stool. My bowel program has gotten much longer over the last year and a half. A lot of this is because my body produces a lot of mucus after the stool has passed. We usually check about every 15 minutes and sadly my bowel program is now averaging around 3 1/2 hours. We can probably cut it down to two hours and 45 minutes if I didn't worry too much about the mucus and then had my caregiver cleaned up in the morning, but she asked small fingers and I also risk having the mucus attack while I am seated in the wheelchair if I do this. I'm leaning towards having the procedure done, but I haven't really heard that many negatives other than the few comments I saw all on one forum. I know darn well there's got to be negatives, so I'd appreciate if you could pass them on to me. One of the quadriplegics who I talk to last year told me about some sort of burping, but he didn't elaborate. I do not have the ability to move my hands or arms at all, so I don't know what would happen if I need to do something like burping. I'm going to continue to search the web, but I would appreciate some feedback. You guys have been great on the ileovesicostomy and I really do appreciate it. These are, as all of you know, decisions which we have to live with. Sure I guess they are reversible, but I have known one person who had his colostomy reversed after he went into remission and he had a horrific time getting his bowels to work properly once again. In fact, he ended up in the ICU on life support at one point. Thanks everyone, Quadius PS hopefully there are too many problems with this e-mail. Gaymar is no longer in business. I am still using the system however I know I'm on borrowed time before it fails. I'm in bed 24/7 and have been very fortunate with no significant pressure sores and I attribute that to the Gaymar system. I'm seeking suggestions for a replacement turning air mattress product. I am hopeful of finding a product that sells a replacement mattress standalone. I don't want to buy a new controller each time there is a requirement for a replacement mattress. This subject has been discussed several times in this group throughout the years. But since I had a product I was satisfied with, I neglected to take notes. I am sure that my situation is unique. I have now had the same aid from the time of my injury 10 years ago. Over this period of time, it is only natural in my opinion, that he and I have become good friends. However, he does add to my depression which obviously isn't needed, with his personal problems. The plus side is as a result of being good friends he provides me with better service than I might otherwise receive. I have been working on establishing boundaries. To protect them from me as well as me from them. My last aid showed up with booze on her breath. I told her boss but instead of confronting her employee saying something like, "a consumer reported that they smelled alcohol on your breath She told her "Shelly tolm me." then my aid called me and it became personal. Anyway I just want to do the right thing. How do you guys draw those lines or even set the standards? How friendly or even how much info do you give up? Dan, I lived in Alberta, Canada and the way it works here is the bigger the city of more you get. The smaller the city the less you get. I'm on self-care management. It's better than hiring through an agency. The agencies take all the money and you get less hours. On self-management I can pay them what I want and get more hours. After my accident we moved to the big city for four years. I was getting $3000 a month. We then moved to a small town, and now I get $1800. It's not fair because my condition hasn't changed. Re: [QUAD-L] This ought to start something
KRATT, YOUR RIGHT! You guys think you are justified in every country or nation you invade, killing innocent people. We know the reasons for invading Iraq. Sure wasn't for the WMD. Your country should take care of its own problems instead of spending billions of dollars a day somewhere else and going farther into debt..Say like healthcare, unemployment, gun control just for starts! Closing the border only put yours on the unemployment line. We have a reason to be PISSED... Ray - Original Message - From: "Richard Kratt" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Sunday, June 05, 2005 7:34 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] This ought to start something WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR THE FOLLOWING SPEECH? My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed. Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is now complete. This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning. Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there. The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening. Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war. The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption. Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France. In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth. Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe China. To Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Yo, boys. Work out a peace deal now. Just note that Camp David is closed. Maybe all of you can go to Russia for negotiations. They have some great palaces there. Big tables, too. I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis. I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers, and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change. Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security. So start doing something with your oil. Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty - starting now. We are tired of the one-way highway. It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin." Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. It is time to eliminate World Cup Soccer from America. To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget. To the nations on List 2, a final thought. Drop dead. God bless America. Thank you and good night. If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier.

It was nominated for many awards this past season, and won the Oscar for best foreign language film. That one is directed by the man who made "The Others," but it is in Spanish. It is based on the true story of Ramon Sampedro, a quadriplegic who battled in court for the right to end his own life. It is an extremely moving film. Murderball is a documentary. It will be in theaters this summer, so will likely not be on DVD until this coming fall, but look out for it - it's excellent. Re: [QUAD-L] Confirmation of SCI
I got up from my bed and went to the bathroom. When I got back to the bed, I blacked out and hit my head on a bedside table. After the neurologist examed the x-rays in the emergency room, I asked him what was the prognosis. He told me I would never walk again, did not mention my hands and arms would be useless as well.Willie,C-4, five years post - Original Message - From: Stuntman To: ~LittleQuad~ ; Quad-list post Sent: Wednesday, March 23, 2005 3:04 PM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Confirmation of SCI Well,There I was lying in the floor on the passenger side of my van after going of a mountain in the Black Hills, I couldn't feel anything below my shoulders. Next thing I remember is a flashlight shining through a hole in my windsheild where a mule deer had tagged me. They were startled when I told them not to move me (thinking I had to be dead). They went to the neaest ranch and called for help, I was alert and awake all through the ordeal of being slowly immobilized by the paramedics, loaded into the ambulance (where my temp was 91 deg) and taken down to Rapid City. After x-rays etc I heard a doc tell my old girlfriend I'd never move again, so I smacked him. It was then I noticed the 16 penny nail sticking through my hand.Due to my "action" they sedated me. When I woke up they had tongs digging into my skull...So here I am 9 years later with a college educdation, and hoping some type of research opens its doors to releave a syrinx and inject some type of nerve regenerating substance. I'll live with the pain untill then. If I go under the knife, I want to kill 2 birds with one stone.Stunt> > Hey gang, > how did you find out that you had a SCI? Family member, doctor or reality? I could not agree with you more! I have been voting in presidential elections for the past 40 years. I could not help but address each of your commentsindividually...Snip - "There is no ban on embryonic stem research."Almost all funding for basic research comes from government funded sources. It is what has kept the United States at the forefront of technologicaldevelopment worldwide for the past few hundred years. By placing a ban onfederal funding, Bush is by defacto placing a ban on the research.Snip - "There is no scientific proof at this time that it works better thanadult stem cells."Your idea is true, that there is a lot of hope for uses of adult stem cells. However, there is no proof of anything until after a discovery is made! That is why is called research! "Scientific proof" is the result of adiscovery made through research, not the precursor of it! There was noscientific proof that a wheel would be more efficient than simply draggingthings around, until someone made a wheel and then by direct observation itwas known to be a more efficient improvement. There is no scientific proofthat one chemical combination will work better than another at treating aparticular ailment, until after it's been tried and tested. Prior to thatthere are only theories based on existing knowledge. I do not know why,but at this time scientists theorize based on existing knowledge thatembryonic stem cell research holds more promise for treatments than adultstem cells do.Snip - "Do you want real science funded or "junk science"."And I suppose you are qualified to make that distinction? The science ofmany men through history was labeled in their time as "junk science" only tobe exonerated as geniuses by later generations.Snip - "KERRY IS LYING!"You are entitled to your opinion, however if that is true then manyprofessionals most likely much more knowledgeable than you or I are lying tous all, not Kerry. He is simply listening to, and repeating what theresearch scientists and other professionals in the medical community havesaid. If you listen to the tone of his comments, he always refers back tothe medical community. That is more than I can say for Bush whose commentsring with the tone, "I believe" (emphasizing the ' I') What I disdain aboutBush is his arrogance both on this issue and in foreign affairs. He seemsto believe his wisdom is greater than that of specialists and advisers whoare infinitely more knowledgeable, insightful, and experienced in theirfields then he!Mark Felling

He authored books, directed and acted in movies, and worked relentlessly as a speaker and advocate. In his situation, despite the money and fame, I would have withered away. His spirit seemed indomitable, and it pains me to hear other quads question his motives and criticize his outspokeness. He was a true hero to me and millions of others. I thank God for Christopher Reeve and I thank God that he did not go gentle into that good night. He raged against the dying of the light until the very end. Perhaps he did not make a "declaration of faith," but if anyone deserves to be sitting -- No, make that standing! -- at the right hand of God today, it is Christopher Reeve. I thank god for his life and undying spirit. This world and my heart both have a huge empty space today at the loss of our leader -- free at last. Larry Willis C-5
