Rob, I understand exactly what you mean about the pain. I am in excruciating pain, 24/7 also, given it a thought of taking the cowardly way out. It's terrible when you have no quality of life. I currently take 400 mg of Lyrica twice daily, 60 mg of Cymbalta, once a day, Vicodin three times a day, and 50 mcg Fentanyl patch every three days. This still doesn't control the pain. I had considered titrating off all my medication, but the withdrawal is a bitch! I don't know what to do. I am so stressed out from the pain that I have started clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth. My dentist ground my teeth down to relieve some of the pressure. The pain makes me totally exhausted. I will be contacting my doctor this afternoon about pain management. I am desperate. Taking the generic (thanks Medicaid) for severe pain that is pure Hell. Tried it before at 900mg, no relief. New Pain Doc wants me to try 1800mg. Medicaid won't cover Lyrica, tried it once at 75mg 3x per day (samples from Doc), no relief. Even Morphine does nothing. Today at 300 mg neurontin 2x per day. Been building up for 3 weeks. All it does is make me sleep. To the point where I wish I wouldn't wake up. On 5/16/08, KK [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Why are you taking it? Are you on the generic or name brand? Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin
I think dosing and reaction to neurontin is *very* much related to each person's own metabolism and body chemistry... moreso than some other common drugs. One of the more common problems I've heard from both quads and able-bodied people is a tendancy toward some weight gain. (A factor I completely forgot to take into account when I asked about diets the other day.) I *was* taking 300mg/3x/day from '97 up until September. It helped without making me sleepy even though I took it with baclofen, valium and either hydrocodone or hydromorphone. Since my hospitalization in August, I, too, had my dosages pushed up. Now it's 900mg/3x/day in additioon to all the others. Still no sleepiness. However, I (my body)have always been very resistant to these types of meds. My mother is the oppposite... half a dose of most OTC non-drowsy allergy pills put her to sleep for obver 2 hours! Trial and error and make sure your doc knows if/when the drowsiness outweighs the benefits expected. Good luck hang in there! Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin alternative
Which explains my high tolerance to drugs--at least the pain and 'valium' types! :) The last time I was in the hospital for a skin flap, nmy veins were non-existant, so they decided to put a main line in. The problem, I was already in the big sand filled air bed and the docs did not want me taken out of it. S, they tried putting a board under my upper body to get it in the proper position to do the needle pushing. The local did not work. She tried 5 times to get it in my left collar bone area! Then 2 times on the right side and once for my jugular!! By that time I was screaming and crying like crazy! She finally gave up and just walked away. A male doc walked by and got involved. He knew I was not in the physically correct position--I needed my whole body to be flat. They gave me a washcloth to wipe/hide my face and pushed the big bed back up to my room. The nurses were shocked at the state I was in. Finally the docs relented and that afternoon they came to tell me they were going to try again! I went nuts! They put me on a gurney and down I went. They assured me it would not hurt this time. Yeah right! I laid in the OR holding room for quite a while. Then they did find a vien in my hand to put an IV in for some sort of medicine so I would not 'feel' anything. It took 5 syringes full of whatever it was before I was numb! I'm sure my adreniline had something to do with it. And I did not feel a thing! I gabbered constantly tho. They finally said that if I have any more surgeries to just have them automatically put a main line in. It probably will not happen, but I sure willmake some noise about it! When they say on the scale of one to ten with ten being the highest pain--I think I hit a 20! I puffed up swollen all around my neck and shoulders and ached if someone touched those areas for quite a while. take care, Dana [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Liz [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Dana Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED]; quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Sunday, March 27, 2005 9:37 AM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin alternative wow, that's alot of drugs. - Original Message - From: Dana Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Saturday, March 26, 2005 6:34 PM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin alternative I have taken Methadone for 'several' years after my doc took me off of perkacet. Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin alternative
I'm telling ya. My pain specialist has me on 15mg of methadone a day. that's not very much as all. Huge improvement. It affects the nerve endings to keep the pain away. I was taking 20mg a day and asked to go down. I still have slight pain but nothing like before. Stacy - Original Message - From: David K. I put on weight and almost stopped working out completely, and that was when I started weaning myself off it. At least the pain lets me stay awake and doesn't put weight on me! Hi, I use to take Neurontin, and if I remember rightly they did take a while to kick in. I did find I had a huge weight gain when I went on it as one of the side effects. I don't mean to put a downer on things, it's just always best to know the good and the bad! Take care, Love Smurf xxx
Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin alternative and randeom abdominal pain
I was put on Neurontin just the opposite. I started on 3 a day and decreased it to 1 a day. I've been taking it about 8 (?) years. I tried going off it one time and had no problem except after about 10 days those electrical shocks thru the body started up again. I put up with it for about another week, then caved in. I think the Gabitril disagreed with me. Yesterday I could hardly move without experiancing extreme pain. The abdominal cramps and pain were terrible. I am back on Neurontin again. I also basically slept thru the time my homemaker was here. She was shredding the last of a huge amount of old checks and bank statements and the shredder is not a quiet thing! I was worthless yesterday. Today I feel a lot better but am sleepy. I did a little bit of email this morning untilabout 12:00, then dozed off for the next 2-21/2 hrs. Now a few hours later, I am sleepy again. Hope-fully it will pass soon. take care, Dana [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: Lori Michaelson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Quad quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 12:13 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] neurontin alternative and randeom abdominal pain Well, it's been 10 yrs since I began Elavil but I'd remember if it bothered me. I'm lucky in that aspect to have a somewhat iron stomach. Aspirin bothers many tummies - not mine. Antibiodics bother many ... not mine. Different foods bother many ... not me. All you can do is experiment to SEE if, in fact, it IS Elavil. And you know my opinion on Neurontin.. one has to increase it exponentially to experience relief. No difference to me and taking huge doses and more all the time is uncool w/ me. Then a year to get off it! I'm experiencing bad torso pain and abdominal pain/aching overnight and off/on during the day. BAD! Now I don't know if it's my infection or spinal. I give up! Frustrating! Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin alternative
Like most meds it has to get into your system to get working. I didn't like it but others here swear by it. Give ita chance. Re: [QUAD-L] NEURONTIN
I did and also found a lot of people that said it's useful. People are jumping on a bandwagon to sue like they due for everyone else. One lawyer has a whole list of medicine including paxil for suicidal tendencies. It works for me so I am going to stick with it. Stacy "People who hate you do not win unless you hate them.
