I know that much of Invacare was outsourced to China, maybe that could be the

This is a copy/paste from facebook. For those who have a Quatum, how do you

To make this matter worse, I live 20 miles from Invacare. The dealer and

RE: [QUAD-L] bad chair

2008-08-01 Thread Greg
I hated my TDX3 for 2 reasons.

First was the electric legrest. Each legrest has it's own built on motor so
you have to plug/unplug it every time you take the legrest off. They just
looked and felt big.

Second was the electronics. I don't know if it's the motors, gears, or
motherboard, but it was hard to drive it in a straight line. Like when you
are going down a sidewalk and it starts to veer to the left, when you try to
adjust using the joystick it clicks and jerks back. There was no smooth way
to make slight adjustments in steering.

My TDX5 is totally different. I ordered a single post legrest. It started
out bad, keeping my feet to close together making my ankles turn in. But
after they put a wider plate on the feet pad and spreading my feet apart, my
legs and feet sit much nicer. And it's such a better ride, very quiet and
smooth driving.

It has tilt, recline, electric leglift, and seat riser. They were nice and
canceled that annoying safety feature that keeps you from driving when it's
tilted or reclined or raised up.

My only complaint is it can not tilt/recline as flat with the seat raiser
installed. My old Permobil could tilt/recline slightly more than flat. So If
I was slightly slide out of my sitting position I could go flat and wiggle
myself back up. Now I'm at something like 20 degrees from flat. Harder for
someone to help slide my up also.

I do wish it was faster, but midwheel chairs are not as safe at faster
speeds. But I love the mobility, I can turn completely around inside my
minivan. Plus I have a few sharp corners in my house.

The TDX3 is a bottom of the line midwheel drive chair that can handle virtually
all the aftermarket living attachments. I have a 6 year old one that has 1232
miles on it and 7400 hours. i am not fond of it's battery size but the new AGM
batteries have made a difference with it. Like any chair, seating is what makes
most of us like a chair. I feel like I have done a miracle by keeping it in
decent shape so long. My old Storm series had rear wheel drive had big
batteries and did 10 mph, but the DME didn't put in the effort on the chair
seating. I miss the power but I like the way this chair gets around in tight
places.
I'm just curious as hell what has happened to your tdx3? Do you have tilt and
recline? Did the DME turn off those restrictive safetys that don't let you move
while in tilt or recline? Are castor tires coming off? I had a swedish chair
that had tilt, recline and elevate when I worked. (too many drugs, can't
'member da name). It held up for 11 years but when it died there was no fixing
it.
I firmly believe that because of all the time and care behind the seating in
this tdx3, it is the most comfortable chair  I have ever had. Batteries don't
last much more than a year. It has  gone through a lot of tires and it has the
MK5 electronics so I do switch off and on a lot.
So, just to restate myself, wtf are your chairs doing wrong?
Best to all of you,

Hi Alan,
All three of mine were bought from private owners (newspaper classifieds). I
drive with one, use the other to run around in the house because I live in Ohio
and don't want to drag in the snow & mud. The other, which is just about
stripped by now, we bought for parts. I'm also fortunate that once a year we
can take our chairs to Invacare & we can get anything done to them at no cost.
Invacare and local business's sponsors the event. Last year they gave us two
new 'carry home' motors but most work is done on site. Anyway, people on the
list have posted about a Wheelchair junkie who sells parts. I have the TDX3
myself, it sits in the closet, I don't like it either!

I was never a big fan of E&J and often wondered how they impressed the VA
for so many years. But that is just me. I too wonder what goes on in the
minds of some manufacturer's engineering minds when it comes to complicated
electronics in today's wheelchairs. When a product is covered by a
manufacturer's
warranty, you have to play by their rules. As a 3rd Party or 4th Party
repair station you have to follow the directions, practices and rules of your
bosses and superior when doing service and repairs. Of course, when something
goes wrong...everything seems to go wrong and people become upset and
angry.

Bottom line, if you are happy with the results, so be it and you are a much
better person. If anything went wrong after the mechanical/electrical
change, what would you have done? Not everyone is as fortunate as you, and I

RE: [QUAD-L] bad chair

2008-07-19 Thread Joan Anglin
I bought my own chair myself because I did not have private insurance or
Medicare. Medicare did not consider me disabled-nor do they now-because I
did not have enough quarters working for Social Security in the five years
before I was disabled to qualify. Gee guys, I made the decision to stay home
and take care of my mother who had a massive stroke and would have been in a
nursing facility otherwise. Just my bag that I broke my neck three years
later, and lacked the quarters to be disabled J. I came into the system as a
retiree with my wheelchair, and trying to get it fixed locally is
impossible. Up until now Teftec was great to work with, but they are out of
business, and Next Mobility is the new distributor, and I have been
attempting to get some help for the last six weeks, I finally appeared to
have spoken with the correct person, and what I need is on the way. And
Medicare will buy me a new seat cushion, but will not buy me wheelchair
tires, batteries or any repairs. They did however buy me new arm troughs-go
figure? The answer I get is we will buy you a new wheelchair. I don’t want a
new wheelchair, I absolutely love my Omega Trac, and I do not want a “mall”
wheelchair that will get stopped by the slightest bump in the ground. So I
will therefore pay to fix my own chair, and hopefully not whine about it.

RE: [QUAD-L] bad chair

2008-07-18 Thread Greg

What I hate about insurance companies and wheelchair repair places, is a lot
of them have contracts with each other. Like mine. Because of this contract,
they can not work on my chair unless it goes through the insurance. Even if
I want to pay cash. They will ONLY work on my chair if I go through the
insurance and they deny my claim. So when I needed a new tire, I had to wait
2 months

1st: An appointment to get a service call to see what I needed. (I couldn't
just tell them).

2nd: They send a claim to the insurance.

3rd: Once OKed, they order the parts.

4th: Because this takes over 30 says, they verify the claim again. (An
approval only last for 30 days).

5th: Call to make an appointment to come in for the repair. Who knows how
long the waiting list is.

So when I need emergency help like a flat tire, I go to another place I
found that has common repair items in stofck.

I miss the way I had it in Seattle. I just went in any time for smaller
things and they did it then, then billed my insurance. Better insurance
there, but so few places near Phoenix keep parts in stock.

I'm lucky. It's so nice having a fairly new backup chair. I just plug it in
once a moth to keep the batteries going.

Greg

That is cold. I don't know how much an electrician would charge but these
chairs are not state of the art. I have a brother in law that I beg and he
likes to show off at how he can fix anything within reason. I would imagine you
could send the bill to Medicare. The trick is being able to afford the guys

on a regular basis. They do charge me to fix stuff I bought from Ebay.
Ok, why did you buy a chair from a private party? You understand, I need to
know why no insurance paid for yours.

There are 3 Invacare dealers within 20 miles of me. None of them will even
look at the chair. Why? Because I didn't buy it there. I bought it from an
individual. You would think a certified dealer would provide service to its

tough luck bud, but we'd love to sell you a new one. Greedy jerks. I have no

guys, my invacare power chair has died on me. The control box and batteries
are ok because I tested them. Every one of the lights on the control box are
on. The 'gas gauge' is lit from one side to the other and all the power
level lights are on at once. The chair does nothing. Any ideas?

RE: [QUAD-L] bad chair-Radio Shack Electronics

2008-07-16 Thread Mark Jackson
I go to a electrical warehouse to get toggle switches and most of the time I
can find the same model of the original but of course a crap load cheaper
than our DME or wheelchair manufacturer.
On my old quickie p320 I had a LaBac recliner and the switch had to be
replaced several times at a cost of $175 or $10 at my place so it's a no
brainer to me.

Let common sense prevail. Rarely will those after market switches work as
designed. Those toggle switches may all look the same on the handle, but
you have to consider what is inside the body that counts.
You have to consider that any replacement switch be equal in action to the
original one.

hi there! that's strange because just yesterday my other 1/2 fixed my
driving chair. it's an invacare and he called them & they said it could be
the control box or the 'switch'. mine did the same, just quit but the on
light would flick on and off. mine was the switch. if you can get to radio
shack you can get one there.

I don't know about that. Radio Shack has provided me with some superior

Re: [QUAD-L] bad chair

2008-07-16 Thread John S.
Lets face it folks, if invacare built cars these damn things wouldn't get
permits for sale in the USA. The electrical systems are so outdated I'm sure
there parts come from a factory that use to build barbie cars. My DME says the
best thing he can say about them is that Medicare covers them.
Now, before I say anymore, is the dial turned toward the rabbit or the turtle?

Amen Dave.  Sometimes that works when there is a programing error.  Other times
you have heat related problems and mechanical problems.

That is why I always suggest the provider first and then watch what they do.

Re: [QUAD-L] bad chair

2008-07-16 Thread John S.
If you have tilt and recline on your chair, try moving the seat full up and see
if it moves. If it does you need your safeties reset. If not, then your main
control box may be toast. Either way call the DME that sold it to you. I'm
hoping you keep a backup chair. Put your good batteries in it and start
remembering how it drove.

Sorry, but that is not enough information. Have you contacted your
provider? What were you doing at the time? Has it happened before? You
may have
disconnected or snapped a loop wire and your system is frozen until the
problem is connected.
