Re: [QUAD-L] flap surgery

2013-07-13 Thread Don Smith
Hi Dana
This sore I'm dealing with has been chronic, it started several years ago when
a jay gel cushion got hard on one side.  Over the years we've maintained it
with the help of a very good wound nurse when needed.  In Jan. of 2012 I got
ostyomiolius (spelling) I spent some time in the hospital had vinomiacyn and
pretty much been through the mill.  It's getting better slowly.  I go to the
Kaiser wound clinic once a month to get it checked,  then I have an agency
nurse that comes once a week for measurements.  I few weeks ago I got a new
agency nurse that seems to know more about wound care then the one I had.
She's already talking to the clinic (which I don't really have much faith in
sometimes) when the patient knows more then them about wound care.  The charge
nurse has just passed her test for her wound care cert. and the rest of them
just know how to measure, document and take a pic the redress it the same way
it was unless it looks worse or you
get on them and ask for a refurral to an outside wound clinic for a second
opinion then they decide to try something different.  I'm not going to let it
kill me, old age well do that.  I hope everone else is in good health or at
least close to it.

Thank you Don for the information that you will give us through the new

months to heal and I had to go to the wound center every two weeks for care of

I talked to my doctor about flap surgery. He
said my sore would heal faster if I got it, but I would have to stay in bed 4
to 6 weeks. I am in bed now, but I get up for a couple hours every day. He
said it is the twisting and sliding that is the worst for your but after
surgery. I worry about doing my B – program, I would have to do it in bed
while laying on the wrong side. I don't know if that really makes that much
of
a difference. But getting cleaned up and changing sheets could be a real
  problem.
But after 4 to 6 weeks I would assume you can't just get up and
stay up, you would have to start out slowly and add time each day or
  week?
As for the long-term would it be better for my butt to just let it
  heal or get the surgery?
I know a lot of people here have had flap surgery,
  would you recommend it?
I'm in bed most of the time anyway, it's too darn
hot here to go outside anyway. At least for very long. 115° and that's down
  from a few days ago.
One of my main concerns is what if the outside of the
wound heals up good, but the inside doesn't connect or heal up. It would be
like having bad tunneling going on.
At least just letting it heal you can
see it heal from the bottom up. I just had a checkup and outside the wound
got
smaller around, but it was just as deep. Now it is 1.4 cm wide and the
tunneling is 1.2 deep. but I don't know if that 1.2 cm is added on to the
depth of the wound, or if that is a total. I'll have to ask next
  time.

Having had flap surgery twice, my recommendation is to wait. Each time I
had the flap done the tunneling was to the bone. With depths from 7 to 9
cm. What is your current regiment?

You have every right to be disappointed and depressed. I can understand
the frustration of thinking that you wasted an entire summer for what?
And its your body too.

I hope that your surgery tomorrow will close the wound and resolve any
further issues regarding your tissues. Most flap procedures heal the area
and allow for a normal life once properly healed.
May You Do Well!
Best Wishes

I had a minor flap surgery in july and spent two weeks at Northwestern then two
weeks at RIC. I as amazed at how much strength that I had lost. My 'up' time
was severely restricted. I used to be 'up' 12-16 hrs a day-no problem. I'm now
at 6hrs then 1 hr off then back up. I'm using a Roho where I was just using a
foam cushion before. I just finished my
outpatient PT/OT today. Now i have to put what they did into a new daily
routine. I'm c6/7, 39 years post injury. The flap was the first for me. Best of
Luck. listen to the dr., nurse, aides, anyone who soundslike they're giving you
good advise.

The less my husband has to do (and he is doing 99+% of my daily care) the
better. Are you the same Floreen as on the SCIC list?

I actually just got finished with long term antibiotics and cared for my own

give him  his first dose and show you how to do it.

I hope it all goes well for you,

They have you flush it after each dose.  Make sure you follow those
instructions because the pic could get a blood clot then you will really have
problems.  Mine wasn't properly flushed in the hospital and then they had to
call the iv team to my room to get it unclogged.

Hi Dave,

How deep and big was your sore. Mine is not very big as it is
deep. They are definatly going to be doing some muscle reconstruction in
there. I have to admit I'm nervous. I'm scared about going into a
rehab hospital around here. The care I hear is a lot worse than when I was
there and then it was terrible. The thing that benefited me was that I was
eventually able to get up on my own towards the end but when I couldn’t dress
myself or transfer, I was consistantly late to rehab. Because I was more
work than anyone else I was saved for last. I wasn’t getting turned or
woken up to turn for the first month or so when I was there. It scares me
to think that I have to be bed bound for such an amount of time and have that
terrible care. My friend and I sat and thought about all the nursing homes
and rehabvcenters in the area and it is quite ugly to even think about it.
The last thing I want are some complications because the nurses aren't good or
they are overworked. I'm thinking of asking to get a prescription for a
certain type of bed and stay home and have my neighbor help look after me and
maybe look into meals on wheels. I have a whole list of questions for my
doctors.

Hi Stacy,Mine was pretty deep Stage IV. They did do some muscle reconstruction and a lot of tissue debreeding. I was taking classes at Glendale Community Collage in AZand kept putting off going in and having it treated. I didn't want to lose my 4.0 GPA that I was carrying so I waited until the end of the semester. The bad news was the sore was worse, and the good news was I kept my 4.0 GPA!My advice would be toget your wound treated and get the rehab over with. The longer you wait, the worse it will be when you do get started. Once that is done youwill have a better idea about what your goals for the future will be. You're in my prayers.
