Re: [QUAD-L] Update
Time to end your uti's Greg. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/showthread.php?133414-Microcyn-Bladder-Treatment-%28An-Open-Letter-to-Dr-Young%29 I stopped reading this thread around page 45 and took action. I used to get uti's every 6 weeks or so. I started irrigating my bladder with vetericyn vf and have only treated 2 uti's in the past 4 years. I probably could have knocked those 2 out by irrigating twice a day. I've never read that entire thread but vetericyn (the veterinary form of microcyn) has solved my uti problems. Greg, on a personal note, years ago I contacted you on the list because of my nerve pain that made me feel like my arms were soaking in ice water. I thought you felt something similar. I thought your solution was moving to Arizona. Do I have the right guy? Anyway, other than moving, have you found any other treatment for the cold? Your post leads me to suspect not. I agree that publicity is needed about the hospital. I would call the director and then the newspaper. That is so unfair and against all policies that should be in place. Dana. I'm so sorry about your pain. I hope you can find a solution and a great Dr. To examine you carefully and do all the testing that is needed as soon as possible. Re: [QUAD-L] update /pain
The little image centers are independently owned and do what they want. One more thing is most image centers give you an open Mri which is no good for usage b4 a surgery, the closed mri the hospital has gives a more detailed view. The hospital is going to be more accomadating , they have seen it all. Some people get scared when they here that a "quad" is coming. Since my arms work and just my hands and forearms are affected I just tell people I'm paralyzed or a para. Im tired of the .your not a quad thing..or the fear factor at the hospital. Yes my legs are as dead as a doornail to, but my spasms are almost non existent anymore. Anyone know why that could be? I use boards and usually bring a helper to do my mris and ct scans. I have on occasion been lifted by staff, but usually I slide board my way on without to much of an issue depending on the place. im dealing with some pretty tough pain, but Im going as long as I can without a scan. I don't want a surgery because the last one I had was such an ordeal it made me realize I was lucky to get out of there alive. On Thursday, July 24, 2014 9:10 AM, Danny Espinoza wrote: So... I don't know if anyone has updated this lately, but she was booked at the same facility and bonded out the same night for $3500 (I believe). She resigned the very next day, if my memory serves me correctly. There have been at least two more abuse allegations to have surfaced, but I'm not sure how credible all of them are yet. One of them looks like it might have some promise, but the main thing is the facilities down here are updating their procedures on how to deal with people with disabilities. At least there is some silver lining. Hi Eric, Every case is different, but my wife and I moved from MI to AZ just to get our own space after we married. I wasn't in a chair yet but the in-laws hated everything about me. They made false accusations about me stealing from their house that finally forced us to move. After we had our son a year later the in-laws were more accepting of us being together, but it took time before they really welcomed me to the family. I will keep you and your wife in my prayers. You both need to think of the future of your baby. I know you don't want to raise a baby in such a hate filled environment, so do what your hearts tell you to do. With Love, CtrlAltDel aka DaveC4/5 Complete - 29 Years PostTexas, USA Eric Olson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Gang,If you remember, a couple weeks ago I told you about the situation my wife and I were in with her evil family and a baby on the way. Amy's father stopped over to drop off some presents her sister left for Amy at her parents house the week before. My mother (I love her but sometimes she just doesn't use her head) mentions to Amy's father that Amy's pregnant. That was a week ago and none of her family has called her. So she's bummed about that. I don't know what Amy was thinking but she calls her grandma (mother's mother) and now I know where Amy's evil mother gets it from. She told Amy, "what do you want me to say? That your child's going to be beautiful? That your child's going to be loved?" Then accuses Amy of having a baby just to try to save her relationship with her family. She said the only thing she could do to save her relationship with her family was to cra! wl back to them, without me OR THE KID, and beg for their forgiveness. You see, in their world, being with a quad is not only doing something horribly wrong, it also hurts them personally. I think they would prefer I was an able bodied serial child molester. There is good news though. The grandma said that her family wants nothing to do with us or the baby. So we no longer have to worry about involving them in the child's life. Also, I think she considers this latest slap in the face, the last straw. She told her cousin what the grandma said and her cousin told her she had to cut her family out of her life completely. I've been telling her that for years but I guess you have to hear it from the right people. I think she may actually do it this time. She has also agreed to counseling. She just doesn't want to do it now for fear of stressing the baby. I'll hold her to it though. Eric

Eric, Her family dislikes you solely because you're disabled? Bizarre! Someone said they're reminded of "Flowers in the Attic," lol, I'm thinking more like a X-File episode but I won't say which one because it really is insulting, unfortunately, none of us can choose what family we're born into, but thankfully, we can grow up and choose to leave that family. It sounds like Amy's has made that choice for her but I think she and your child will only benefit from it. I can't believe this cushion did this much damage. I also might be able to get money for a lap top so keep your fingers crossed for me. It's so lonely in there all alone. I live alone so pretty much no one to talk to. My friend/helper pretty much comes over to bring me food but isn't able to stay long so that is all the interaction I have. I talk to my Mom like once a week and my Dad every couple of weeks and my brothers are losers so I barely talk to them. The lap top would be a life saver for sure. There is so much fear in this email it is frightening. I didn't post my message to scare the pants off everyone, I posted it let you know why Gale didn't resubscribe after his surgery, like his posting said he would. Let me fill you in on Gale's expectations and the results. There is so much truth in this posting, that I have to respond. 1. We live in Alberta Canada, and are living with the hosiptal situation in our area, not neccessarily true everywhere. Here the reason for poor nursing care is a pat cutback problem answer. Gale had terrible pressure sores on his butt, and they were complicated because after 22 years of being a quad, this catheter continually bipassed, and we were constantly worried about infecting his pressure sores. Also, after 22 years of having problem bowel routines, his bowels had reached the point where we were unable to get him up in the sling to lift him without his bowels moving. They had reached the point where he was having to be cleaned sometimes more than 7 times a shift, which was really wearing thin his quality of life and the patience of his caregivers. This was also making it extremely difficult to keep his sores clean. He researched the surgery for a claustomy (you spell it hee hee), and a suprapubic cathether for 2 years before making the decision to have his surgery. He consulted with four doctors before making his decision. When it reached the point where it was impossible to lift him into his wheelchair any more without his bowels giving way, he made the decision to try the surgery. He was assured this would not only help with the sores it would improve his quality of life many times over. He had spent the past 5 years 95% of the time in bed, trying to get the sores healed, and now with the bowels and bladder problems, his quality of life at the point where he was willing to take the risk, knowing full well that the most dangerous place in the world for a quad was the hospital. Quads are just too damn much work. He expected to be home in 3 to 4 days. 2. In Alberta, on WCB (Workers Compensation Board), we fought and won the battle for homecare caregivers, 24hours a day,, and for the past 18 years, have had around the clock staff looking after him, paid by WCB. This enabled us to get out of solitary confinement and actually have a great life together. However, also their policy, until about 9 years ago, was that the minute he went into hospital, the staff were layed off until such time as he got back home. In that timeperiod he came down with the flue and a cold, and complications set in his lungs. He had to go to the hospital, and within the first 1/2 hour of his being there it was very obvious that they didn't have a clue how to look after him. I watched for a half an hour, as we were getting him settled and was fighting the nurses within the first 5 mins, and they didn't have a clue that he was unable to ring a call bell, feed himself and they were tossing him around the bed like he was a 15 year old hockey player. They were absolutley at a loss as to helping him cough up the crap, so I asked the staff to stay with him. Now, I am going to say, right, now that we had exceptional folks working for us. Common folk off the street with no medical training, and all had been trained by Gale and myself. Note: I was the furthest thing from a nurse that you could get when he broke his neck. However, these caregivers, went around the clock with him at the hospital, and he was transferred to the Lethbridge hospital. This is a city hospital, so we expected much better care than what he got in our small community. However, they didn't have a clue either, so I keep the staff working, and they did, even though at that time, they didn't even know if they would get paid for their time. They were driving from Claresholm, to Lethbridge, and then working 12 hour shifts with no breaks, mostly with him in a sitting position while they pushed the diaphram for hours helping him cough. The hospital staff, stopped occasionally, at the door to watch, but rarely offered to help. We nearly lost him that time, but our caregivers pulled him through. When he got back home, I called his family doctor to the house for a 2 hour doctor's appointment, where I outlined the documented care he got from hospital staff. I asked him for a letter, for WCB stating that if He didn't have HIS staff with him when he had to go to the hospital, that he would die. OUR doctor had no problem at all

Re: [QUAD-L] Update Gale See
Funny how often many of us think of this very situation. I know I will be leaving some very wonderful people behind who love and care for me very much. I know I will never see this place in exactly the same way again, and all I know and do today will forever be a part of my past. There are however a few things I will be glad to leave behind. If you read the right books, you are told that each of us planned our lives before we got here as something we needed to accomplish. In deadly fear that if I leave early, I might not be satisfying my etherly goals (and thus have to repeat them), I am sticking around for every bit of knowledge and awareness I can squeeze out of this odd self induced experiment in karma advancement. I don't think I need to make such grandiose advances my next few trips here so I'll be the Hugh Hefner guy next time enjoying the fluffier side of soul guilding. I know you miss Gale as I know he misses you. All of us are mere ships passing in the night from which we gleen every bit of enrichment we can. I fully believe we will be able to contact the loved ones we knew here after we all return home, and in a way that knowledge makes the stay here without them just a bit more palatable. My joy is with you as you enjoy Gale's new freedom with him in anticipation of that glorious time when you will see him once again. Peace ad Love, Dave In a message dated 1/18/2005 12:05:18 A.M. Re: [QUAD-L] Update Gale See
Our thoughts are with you Sylvia. I'm so sorry to have lost a net friend so suddenly. Yes, Sarah aka Smurf, summed it up well. I was corresponding with him via the quad list when he was on because we both had a similar wound. Yes, his energy will go on without doubt and he was one of the kindest & wisest members on the q-list. I must ask, however, ... was the surgery for his wound? A heart attack as the final killer? Hmm I'm tired of the cliche "nothing can bring him back" albeit being true. But was he in for wound surgery? Unless there is ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER option for myself to be treated (including a year in bed at home if need be) I won't go into a hospital these days. The horror stories I've been hearing by patients & employees ... there's a good chance that someone coming out alive (especially quads or the elderly) is against the odds. People get so weary of fighting to get quality care from those who are supposed to do no harm. But dammit, we the people need to take a stand and get those "seemingly good" quacks OUT of the profession. * June 1995 - A neurosurgeon let cerebral spinal fluid leak out of the back of my head for TWO WEEKS (after negligence in surgery) before he went back in to solve the problem. AFTER I got meningitus from the leak which made me comatose with a temp over 105. I'm convinced he was waiting for me to die as he did "research" on cadavers with my condition of syringomyelia. ** August 1995 - came home from that hospital in June but in July I had a hugely swollen left leg that was hard as a rock. Being 5 hrs from the hospital... I kept calling with my symptoms. They poo-poohed it as just swelling. A net article told me I could have a clot. I called my local physician and went in. Even though I had had CLASSIC TEXTBOOK symptoms of a deep vein clot ... he doubted it but sent me for a sonogram. I never left the hospital that day. My clot was so extensive it could have caused a deadly pulmonary embolism and instant death. I had to stay in the hospital on heparin week. *** Back in November of 2004 I got a UTI (I'll be plagued with those for the rest of my life of course but...) that had Proteus as the bugger (no pun intended ). And my Dr wasn't going to treat it! Granted (and I KNOW THIS).. something will always colonize around my foley catheter but if it's one of four (Proteus, Salmonella, Pseudemonas or Shigalla)... YA DON'T LET THOSE GO NO MATTER WHAT! Potentially lethal. If it weren't for Dave and his microbiology knowledge .. I would have said ok to not treating. When Dave heard it was Proteas in the urine ... we insisted on treatment. Unfortunately, being a stronger bugaroo and they did no "follow up" culture ... it came back. I started having lower abdominal pain a week ago and it didn't let up. I knew right away what must have happened but they have to do ANOTHER culture TO MAKE SURE what bug it is & what med to be put on that it'll react to. ** My brother-in-law (very very healthy 59-yr-old) had a routine colonoscopy. They saw something further up and the Dr insisted it be removed IN CASE it was benign and "your area has a high case load of colon cancer." (Enough to scare patients into it). The surgery went fine. A month later (August 2004) he got violently sick. Then sicker. Some coincidence! There was obviously a leak where the surgery was ... releasing colon material into the abdominal cavity. He was so sick--looked like death. Back in the hospital on IV anti-biodics. All he wanted was to get better so he didn't sue for negligence. But this surgeon is doing 5 or so opf these ASSEMBLY LINE surgeries a day! Lining his pockets with when the surgeries are probably unwarranted anyway. My list for myself and others goes on. I think I can speak on behalf of the group when I say Gale was such a lovely person who touched all of us at some point. His body may have left the Earth, but his memory is something that can never leave us. We will never forget, along with celebrating his freedom and independance - something he always strived to achieve. Love Sarah aka Smurf xxx
