This is the case, however the all in one driver works fine all the way back
to DOS 3.3, and probably earlier. It's readily available all over.

Dear Juan,

The short answer is that you cannot run PowerPC-requiring programs on
an un-upgraded Performa 630CD. What sort of programs are you trying
to run? I'm sure you'll get useful advice if you'll share a few more
details with the list members.

What do you mean that your Mac won't take a PowerPC card? Of course
it will, provided you can find the correct model card. Again, more
details for the list to peruse will help our collective diagnosis.

Good luck,
Brett

You'll need to get a CDROM driver, the oakcdrom.sys from a Win98 boot disk
should do fine.

Open up the config.sys on the Windows side and add this to the bottom:

device=c:\oakcdrom.sys /d:mscd

This is assuming you have the oakcdrom.sys on the main C drive, which is as
good as any place.

Then open up autoexec.bat and add this:

mscdex.exe /d:mscd

You might have to modify that mscdex line depending on where your copy of
that is and whether it's there at all. If not, google around and you'll
find it.

Once that's done, reboot the PC and it should be in the File Manager this
time. Note there are some issues with the 32 bit file disk access that you
might see in the 386 Enhanced control panel in Windows, best to leave it
alone if it works. If you get immediate bluescreens when you try to use the
CD ROM, go in there and turn it off.

Some versions of the DOS support software do have problems. Heck, some
versions of the Mac support software have problems.

In fact, the DOS on a Mac product (Reply, but actually designed entirely
by Apple) cannot see the CD-ROM if it is a 600i, but can if it is a 300i
... a known limitation for which Reply (or Apple) didn't fix, but instead
included a third-party CD-ROM driver for the Mac side. Problem solved for
the DOS side.

The DOS Compatibility card for the Q650 and similar '040 PDS machines is
pretty clean ... the PC Compatibility Card for PCI Power Macs is squeaky
clean.

Any other DOS/PC compatibility card had (and still has) unresolved
functional flaws.

I use PC Compatibility cards in my Beige machines. I use pcSetup 2.1.7f
(now free, if you can find their site). A flawless implementation of
Windows 95, and runs DOS very well, too.

More reliably than my real-deal Pentium 166/MMX, which is where my (PAL,
GAL, EPROM, EEPROM, etcetera) Universal Device Programmer resides. I have
that machine because the device programmer requires a proprietary ISA Bus
interface card.
