You can boot the GS from the Mac's hard drive. GS System 6 is available as a free download from Apple. Um, the systems on Apple IIs are always included on the application floppy. Not quite. It's true that many programs included the OS, but a lot did not. Including it was generally more of a convenience than a necessity. Once you booted into Prodos 8, you could easily switch betwwen programs without needing the boot disk so it wasn't necessary to have it on each program disk. GSOS (System 5 and 6) was similar to the Mac OS and various files were accessed as needed. Not everyone needed the same bits and pieces so most GS users configured the system disk to their personal requirements. Having a hard drive greatly simplified matters. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hi Mike, sounds like either you only have the standard 512k of video ram installed or your monitor is limited to those screen res. Techtool may tell you what vram is installed, if its 512k you can increase this to 1024k by replacing the two vram simm's this is the maximum vram, the max standard ram is offically 36mb, 1x32mb and 4 onboard. With 1mb of vram you should get 1024x768 but I'd be surprised if it had more than 256 colours, it should be a option in the monitor control panel. John I have a Performa 575 that I use for a lot of things, including web browsing. For the most part it's fine for the stuff that I do online, but the things I do are limited by my experience with trying to do things it can't do. Even some of the things it can do, it doesn't do them well enough to call them practical. Just about anything online that involves MP3s, streaming audio, video, or Shockwave stuff is problematic. And then there are the sites that just have so much going on that it is painful to go to them. It doesn't help that I'm using a 56k modem. On the other hand, having a faster connection won't help if you can't play the files. But aside from that I have wondered how much difference broadband would make. When web pages load in pieces, it seems like it takes as longer or longer to process and display them as it does to load them. If that were so, then the best you would get with broadband would be twice as fast by eliminating the load time. Then I had an opportunity to use a 5400 with a broadband connection at my son's school. I played a movie trailer from Apple's Quicktime page. Call me easily impressed, but it was breathtaking. Then I got to bring a 5400 home. When connected by a 56k modem, the same movie trailer took about 25 minutes to load. It played great, but somehow, it just didn't have the same impact. But, then, my 575 couldn't play it at all because it's limited tp QT4. I'm not sure what all this means othen than how practical it is depends on what you plan to do with it and what your expectations are. Jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... maclink plus and Excel
I mentioned in a previous message that I was recently given an OS8CD. A couple of months ago, I desperately needed to read a couple of Excel files. ClarisWorks 4 could not read those files. I tried to find a copy of MacLink Plus, but couldn't get a version (not off the shelf anyway) that would run on my Performa 575. Someone here suggested Appleworks 5 (which I didn't have access to at the time). Eventually, I found a different solution that took care of the problem. But the whole thing came back to me when I saw MacLink Plus on the OS8CD. So I tried an experiment The version of MacLink Plus that comes with Appleworks 5.0.3 (on a 5400 at my son's school) is 9.7. It seemed to recognize the file, but all I got was a blank spreadsheet. Then I tried MacLink Plus (version 9.0) from the OS8 CD. The FileView application told me that the Excel files were Excel 97 and that they would be supported by MacLink Plus 9.7. But it seems those translators must not have been included in the OEM version that shipped with AW5. So I guess AW5 couldn't do it out of the box. I ended up using icExcel http://www.icexcel.com/ixExcel1.sit. You can view the file, print it, and/or save it in AW5 or AW6 format. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: lost about external cdrom
Hey all, I'm having mass issues with my Quadra 700 and external AppleCD 300 drive. I've played with every jumper setting I can find, and the Quadra won't boot with the CD-ROM connected. Sad to admit a custom PC is my primary machine so I'm a little braindead about SCSI stuff, so it might just be something I'm completely overlooking. One of the problems I have had allowed the Mac to boot but it wouldn't show the CD-ROM or the interal HD, a Quantum Fireball ST 2gig. Other times the computer will attempt to start OS (7.5) and just freeze after the Welcome to Macintosh screen, but if I turn off the CD-ROM it continues to boot. Anybody have any suggestions? Success with SCSI is largely dependent on getting the SCSI ID and termination set correctly. I'm sure there are others here that can help with the specifics for the Apple CD. You might also try running SCSI Probe. That would provide you with information about the SCSI chain that might help you. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Ok. So I was in a thrift shop checking out a Mac. I powered it up (6214, OS 7.5.x) and watched as the extensions loaded. One of these looked liked the rubik's cube icon of Color Picker. This is where the confusion comes in for, in his reply Jag wrote, FWIW, I wouldn't recommend surfing on a 68k Mac to my worst enemy- it's simply a waste of time. So, where do I go from here? Do I scrap the idea carry on using the PC or do I try with the Mac, or do I say 'Sod it' look for a G3 or something? Comments, please! Rog Barclay, Scotland. Well, I use a Performa 575 with iCab and it is sometimes slow, but it is definitely not a waste of time. I wonder where the limitations really are. I have a 56k modem. Most of the time I run it at 33.6 because I can't stay connected at faster speeds. I have wondered about DSL, but it seems like on most web sites there are bursts of modem activity, followed by 'long' pauses while the computer figures out how to render the page. I can see how a faster connection would make a difference on sustained transfers, but how much would it help for typical browsing? There are things that I haven't been able to do (at least not well). These are low priority for me, but I have visited sites that required them and I was curious. Sometimes it's hard to find a 68k version and even when you do, the standard that sites are using has superceded it. One example is Apple's Quicktime movie trailer page. Other examples include: Windows Media Player Shockwave Real Player Audio Like so many things computer related, whether or not you will be happy surfing with a 68k, depends on what you plan do with it, what your expectations are, and your tolerance for experimenting. For me, the fun in using a 68k is seeing just how far I can get with it. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Project 476: Suggestions?
Greetings, Quadlisters: My time at the Quadlist is growing short, since I'm about to donate my Performa 476 to a long-time friend in Charlotte, NC. This will be her first computer, and I want her to find it as pleasurable as possible. It's on OS 8.1, 68MB memory, full FPU (25mhz, never clock-chipped), Performa Display, GV Teleport 33.6 modem, LaserWriter 300, Apple 2x CD-ROM reader, extended keyboard, teardrop mouse, microphone. On bootup, displays the root of the HD, Launcher, and aliases on the desktop. Should be easy to use, but I've been using it since 1992, and it's been my very favorite Macintosh. It's going to be *very* hard to part with it!! My question for this project which I'll compile and send back to the Quadlist before I unsubscribe is this: what have I forgotten? For example, don't forget Netscape Navigator 4.08! I've got the machine set up for it, as well as Eudora Pro 4.2.2, the last known version of Eudora Pro to work on 68k Macs. Barring endorsements for any software, which would cause headaches for Dan and listnannies (I promise to use common sense, guys), send me your don't forget... notes either on- or off-list, as this is a practical request/suggestion, so if you don't want me to post off-list e-notes to the Quadlist, please reply off-list and tell me so straight away. I'm hoping this little fun project will benefit everyone at the Quadlist before I go away. Thanks, and peace -- Cheers! Olin Jenkins, [EMAIL PROTECTED], Jenkins Typography I'm using a Performa 575, OS 7.5.3, and a 56k modem. Perhaps Navigator works better for you than me, but I found it very frustrating. Long waits for web pages to load is one of the least pleasurable things you can do with a computer. I have switched to iCab 2.8.1. It's not as demanding of resources and it is significantly more responsive than Navigator 4. One example is Apple's Older Software Downloads page. With Navigator it took 5.5 minutes to display the page. Worse it would then blank the page and do it all over again. That meant 11 minutes! to even see the page. Meanwhile, I couldn't do anything else. Not all sites were like that, but others were, and I just had to avoid them until I got iCab. I understand how you feel about parting with your system. I hope friend enjoys it as much as you have. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Asante Video Card? (Was Re: 840AV FLOPPY WON'T WORK)
David: I have two 20 SuperMac monitors here I bought at auction that use those three RGB connectors to plug into the monitor. But that's it. The opposite end of the cable fits the Mac's monitor port or the connector for the SuperMac video card. Last summer, I had a high-priced surge suppressor that failed during a thunderstorm. That monitor got cooked. It's in a closet to this day. For some reason I can't bring myself to dispose of it. I just bought a new surge suppressor. What I actually needed was more outlets, so the suppression part is just a bonus. But it does include an equipment guarantee of (up to) $100,000 in case of damage due to momentary spikes or surges. Among the exceptions is a specific exclusion for lightning, because this product is a surge supressor not a lighning arrestor. I'm sure this distinction comes from their legal department and likely reduces the number of claims substantially. But it defintely runs counter to the common advice for protecting your equipment from thunderstorms. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Want to upgrade my Quadra's find command ....
Hi Everyone, I used to use Find Pro II a while back and enjoyed it; later I switched to version III and absolutely loved it! Over the years, I have lost floppies (moves, etc.) and recently I got all my 3.25 disks together and searched for it, but no luck ... (I know I have to get my sw backed up into cd's or zip drives, but I need some vacation time for that, now that I just bought another zip drive) I want to replace my old copy of Find Pro III, any suggestions? I'm open to even alternatives (don't get me wrong, I do like the 7.5 find command, but I'm currently on 7.1). Thanks in advance!! Craig I'm curious about the Zip drive. I have a Performa 575. Micro Center was having a clearance sale. One of the items was a SCSI Zip 250. I was interested until I read on the box it was for OS 8.6. I was pretty sure that the could work, but that requirement scared me off. There was nothing on Iomega's web site that would tell me either way. But I did download the Zip drivers from Iomega and found that most of the software was for PPC. (Since I didn't have a Zip drive, I didn't expect to do anything with the software, I just wanted to see if it would start.) Then I downloaded an older set from elsewhere. That loaded ok, but it was explicitly for Zip 100. Meanwhile, Micro Center sold the 250 and I ended up buying a Zip 100. It works great. It came with it's own driver and software (even older than what I downloaded), So at this point I seem to be using the driver I got from Iomega, and a mix of the software that came with the drive and what I downloaded. I haven't had any problems, but what I would really like to know is could I have used the Zip 250? jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Naughty SCSI drives.
I know this sounds strange but with the second drive that you mentioned ... disconnect it and place it in the freezer for about 24 hours. Take it out and let it thaw ... then remove all the condensation ... plug it in and see what happens. If this does not work likely it is dead. You're right, that does sound strange. Explain. When I worked in a computer shop, the techs used a freon spray to quickly cool things down. I think it was called TE solvent. The idea was to keep parts from failing from overheating. Many times, the effect was temporary, but it was enough to get things going. jim -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
