I have never owned a 840av, but I own a number of this card (a
PrecisionColor 8-Xj), which I like, but probably not for the reason
most think.

It only does 256 colors, but it does do screen sizes up to 1152x870.
The reason I like it is, it is accelerated and the s/w works for OS 6
:-)

You will not be impressed without the s/w, but it's a cheap card that
works very well in a Mac IIci running OS 6.

Other cards from that period seem to offer more colors but on smaller
screens. Personally I like to run as big a screen as possible, the
restricted range of colors not generally being a problem with early s/w
and games, and generally being faster anyway. In the case of the Mac
IIci using a video card rather than built in video gives you back some
ram as a bonus.

It probably won't outperform the built in video of a 840av, but let me
know, offline, if you decide not to use it as I'm sure I'll find a use
for it.

   John

[q] mp3 encoding s/w?

2005-08-25 Thread John Niven

Hi!

This list has been a bit quite :-( Has everybody gone off and replaced
their Quadras with Minis and OSX :-)

In the continuing struggle to find useful tasks for old (but loved)
equipment, I have pressed one of my Quadra 950 into the job of
converting some of my LP music into digital form.

This Quadra (aka "FatBoy") is lucky. It's got a 5 drive carrier with
68pin drives hooked onto an Atto Express IV SCSI card. It's got 208Mb
of RAM and a Yamaha cd burner. Unfortunately I don't have a CD bezel so
it's blank at the moment. If anybody has one (probably from a WGS9150)
I'll love one. FatBoy is also running a PPC601 PDS card at 66MHz.

It also has a Digidesign Audiomedia II Nubus card and Sound designer II
software. This I have hooked up to my stereo system and I have
successfully recorded a LP sample. I have managed to burn this onto a
CD which is playable on a normal CD player :-)

My problem is I would like to convert music files to mp3 format so they
take up less space and are more compatible with modern equipment.
However, Sound designer doesn't cater to this (probably pre-dates mp3
:-). It can put them in AIFF format which allowed me to playback on
iTunes, but its not compressed.

So does anybody know of s/w that will either convert the raw files to
mp3 or other s/w that will work with the Audiomedia II card and produce
mp3 files?

It's not difficult to search the web for software - it's just difficult
to refine it so that you only get stuff of the right vintage.

Cheers,
   John

Actually I was referring to the replacing of the Quadra 950 with a
7300-200. If you want more power you can get it very cheaply, in the
same form factor as a 7300. I fully understand why anybody would want

recognize that you are keeping it for reasons other than power. That's
why I think loading it with hard drives and NuBus cards maximizes its

Actually, I bought it from a LEM swap lister. It came from a WGS 9150,
although it was an optional extra for a Quadra 950.

One other option is to use two more of the standard drive carriers
stacked together. That way you can add a total of three drives.

I hope this works - it's my first use of an on-line photo service :-)

Hee, hee! But you can't get 6 disk drives in that case! With prices as
the are why not just go for a G3 desktop?

I don't know how to do the RAID thing, but maybe will have to
find that out one of these days too. I thought those old machines
couldn't read anything larger than 2G drives? Must have something
to do with the RAID thing?
OS 6 has a 2Gb limit on the partition size. So you can use a larger
drive so long as it has multiple partitions. I'm not sure what other
limitations there are, but I was so pleased to find the REMUS 1.4 s/w
because it is compatible with 68K and OS 7, and will handle up to
2TByte partitions! Previously I used AppleRAID on my WGS 9150 (yes, I
like the big guys!). That will only work with a PPC and has a 4Gb
partition max. FWB RAID toolkit will do 68K, but also has the 4Gb
limit.

I think this is a prime example of how important it is NOT to throw
away old s/w. It's the s/w that brings the magic to the retro-computer.

I have just set up a Quadra 950 with the 66Mhz Apple/Daystar PPC PDS
card. I have a 160Mb 50pin Apple drive as a boot drive running OS 8.1.
Then behind that I have the five drive carrier loaded with 5 Viking II
68pin drives. These are 8.5Gb and were recycled from my former
employers Linux farm. They are strung together on an ATTO express iv
nubus card. The best bit is that I found a copy (shrinkwrapped!) of
REMUS V1.4 on eBay :-) Thus my 5 8.5Gb drives are now one 36Gb RAID 5
array. Fast and secure. This 950 sits in my garage, hooked onto my home
network. I plan to use the RAID array for archiving old mac software.

I love the lines of the Q950. That big PSU demands that you fill it
with hard drives. Who cares that my five drives have less capacity than
one of todays IDE's. I love the sound of them spinning up! You can see
the direct connection to the G5 towers :-)

I mean it's free, but what do you DO with it? I think I'll be giving it to
my son to play "Bolo" on when he's had enough of the IIci :-)

I also have a super Quadra 950 which houses a huge seagate 48Gb full hight
drive. This is 68pin running off a ATTO express IV SCSI card. It's currently
humming away running MacHTTP. I'm intending to learn how to create my own
web pages with it, and plan to put the ubiquitous "family pictures" on it. I
don't have a fixed IP address, so that's another problem. But I have managed
to access my "home page" from the web.

I just got a Quadra 700 which I like the look of. At the same time I picked
up a PAS audiospectrum 16 nubus card (in the shrinkwrap!) which I'm thinking
of putting in it - perhaps to setup as a vintage MIDI/ digital audio setup.

My current favorite, however, is not a quadra. It's the Mac IIfx that I'm
writing this on! OS 6.0.8. and the VersaTerm Pro s/w package. It's a keeper!

I queried its staus from the Q950 and it says:

I googled (is that really a word?) also but only found a version of that for PPC
and OS 9.X. However your link worked and I have tried it out on an LC475 (with
FPU), 'cos it was easier to carry to work than the Q950 :-P It seems to run OK,
but in my ignorance of things UNIX, I can't seem to get it to work. The
"instructions" are obviously written for "geaks"!

It's my opinion that Apple product generally appeal to the opposite type of
people - i.e. those that want to actually DO something with their computer.

The instructions say to lanuch (their spelling) MI/X, do some setups (I'm still
OK). Then they say you have to "telnet to your host" to give a UNIX command:

setenv DISPLAY your.Macs's.IP.number:0.0

So I wasn't sure if I can telnet through MI/X or if I have to use a seperate
program. So I used a seperate telnet program and did as they said. But when I
run my target UNIX app (as per internal work instructions) I get:

XView warning: Cannot load font '-b&h-lucida-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*' (Fo
nt package)
XView warning: Cannot load font '-b&h-lucida-medium-r-normal-sans-*-120-*-*-*-*-
*-*' (Font package)
XView error: Cannot open connection to window server: 172.16.3.183:0.0 (Server p
ackage)

BTW "172.16.3.183" is the IP address my IT guys gave my desktop Mac (usually a
Classic II running 6.0.8L :-)

Any pointers?

I did find Sales blurb for MacX 2.0.4 which says it will work on either 68K or
PPC and supports open transport. Requires 68030 upwards and OS 7.1 and up. The
document was dated 1998.

Sounds kinda cool. Anybody got it? Anybody know where to get it? I might even
pay for it :-)

cheers,

Re: new monitors with (and new uses for) old Macs

2002-10-17 Thread John Niven
Hi Quadlisters,

I just have to butt in here and tell what I've done with a 631CD.

I was touring my local yard sales awhile ago, when I came across the 631CD
complete with keyboard, mouse, and Performer Plus display. The sign on it said
"FREE - or best offer!" :-) So I had to take it.

Of course, it's not a *great* machine, but I cleaned it out and added some more
memory (from my PC salvage collection). The monitor needs a thump on the side
now and again to set the picture straight. When I got it started, I found an OS
8.0 CD in the drive !!! That's gotta be worth some. However, I loaded it with
7.6.1 (my usual) and after playing with it for awhile, put it away.

In the meantime I picked-up a (I forget the model number) Apple AV display -
it's got speakers on either side of the screen. $5 from the charity shop. Badly
needed a clean and de-gauss.

Then I found a Comm Slot Asante Ethenet card for $4.95 in a computer junk shop.
So I thought I'd give the 631CD a place on my LAN.

Next I found a TV/video card package (NIB) on eBone. I got it for $24.50 (inc
shipping).

That has REALLY made a difference Here's how:

I set the 631CD up with the AV display on the kitchen table. Hooked my cable TV
to the "TV input", and we were watching basic cable channels on a "old Mac" :-)

Yelled at my young son (too COOL to play with old Macs) to get his Nintendo Game
Cube. Plugged it into the S-video port, and stereo inputs. Hit the Apple remote
control, and my gob-smacked son was playing Game Cube on a "old Mac"!

Next, I grabbed the my old British (I'm a Ex pat in California) PAL video
recorder, from its storage slot in the garage. Hooked it up to the Video in,
selected PAL, and then my gob-smacked wife was watching her old British Video
Tapes on an "old Mac"!

So now with this "old Mac", you can (as well as perform basic computer
functions)

1) play audio CD's (in stereo).
2) watch TV.
3) play videos (and DVD's if I hook that up).
4) play the latest video games.
5) get on the internet (when I get my wife to OK broadband :)

Now that's what I call a "Home Entertainment System", and for a total of $34.45!
You just gotta look for a Mac's strong points, and kit it out right.

Cheers,
   John

Hi David,

I picked up a 631CD. I also have the guts of a 6400/180. The motherboards/edge
connectors do look similar, so I tried to do a plug in replacement. I had to
remove the PCI riser card. Then you can just swap the backpanels. However,
nothing happened. No "bong", no screen. So I put it aside for awhile. The 6400's
case was smashed up (and CDROM is broken) but it does run otherwise. The 631CD
is a road apple. So what am I missing in doing this conversion? I was thinking
there may be a problem in the power supply side. Isn't a 603e a 3.3v device?

I still think this would be a great idea (if it works). Is the edge pin
connectors common on all such Macs? Anybody point to the pinout?

Thanks pickle, I think I'll try that. I took the back off (that's a b*gger to

warming up enough to "gimmme some red". So I got my wife's hairdryer (!) and

digital camera so I can see how it goes back together. I guess this is why they
*don't* have a decent service manual.

BTW Did Apple ever make a Color Portrait Monitor? I always thought that the
Portrait monitor was a sensible idea. I don't understand why all monitors are
not made this way. Takes up less desk space and is more like the shape of a page
of paper. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that has one.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
   John

I've been dabbling in PPC's for the first time as I found a 6100/60 for $5.
Frankly, I found that web surfing with this (60Mhz PPC + 72Mb ram) was no faster
than my LC475 (25MHz 68040 +FPU + 36Mb ram). Both running 7.6.1 ('cos I like
it), and both using the same GV 56K external modem. Puzzled me. On the other
hand, the 6100 will run PPC only games (tried it with "Starcraft" - a bit slow
but usable). One problem is the lack of cache, and the sharing of DRAM with
video. I'm about to try upgrading to a separate video card and some cache, so
I'm keeping an open mind.

However, one thing to point out about the 8100 is that it has 8 slots for 72 pin
SIMM's. All the old PC's I've come across have only 4 slots. A lot of old (now
scrap) PC's have 16Mb FPM, 5V SIMM's - giving only 64Mb max. 32Mb SIMMS are
much harder to find. So the point is you can fill all 8 slots of a 8100, and
make 128Mb easily. I got a set of 8 such SIMMs salvaged from tossed work PC's.
I'm getting a WGS 9150 (same 8 slots) to put them in.
It's an odd way to look at building a system, but hey, think of it as a
retirement home for shagged out PC simms :-) It's a kindness to those DRAM's :-)

Then there are the G3 upgrade cards.. :-)

Cheers,
   John

Monitor Headaches!

2002-08-26 Thread John Niven

Being the cheapskate that I am, I bought two Apple 15" Multiscans this weekend.
One from charity shop for $2.50 and the other from yard sale for $3.00.
Untested, but I thought I should be able to make one good one from two :-)

Typically, they both have the same problem :-( i.e. no RED! Actually, one of
them will gave a good picture if you leave it powered up long enough.

So, anybody know about this problem, or did I just waste $3.00 ($2.50 to charity
isn't a waste)!

Incidentally, the "service" manual is useless, only covers external adjustments,
and one had a Hitachi tube and the other a Toshiba. I thought they were Sony
Trinitron.

Thanks for the info. Silly me, after I asked the question I thought of:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_wgs/stats/mac_wgs_9150_120.html

and found that one! I know it seems a cock-eyed way of looking for a computer
but my experience is I usually spend more $'s on upgrades than the basic box :-)

I see that the 8100/110AV would also work. What does a WGS offer that others
don't?

Cheers,

Is there a Mac....

2002-08-09 Thread John Niven

that can use eight 72pin SIMMS? I have scavenged these from oldish PC's
being tossed at work. They are all 16MByte, 5V, FPM, 2k refresh, at 60nS. That's
a total of 128M, which, if it was on four SIMMs, I would put in my home PC, but
that's only got four slots.

If there was a Mac out there with eight slots then I'll keep my eye open for
one.

1 * 128K (broke)
1 * Plus
1 * SE FDHD
5 * SE/30
1 * LC475

What next?

I have found that it is much more reliable to change the file extension from
.hqx to .txt before down loading through Netscape on my work PC. I don't know
why. Maybe there are some settings in Netscape that are not right. Once
downloaded you can change it back to .hqx before transferring it to the Mac. If
the file is small enough to go on a floppy then you can use TransMac to write
the file (on the PC) onto a 1.4Mb Mac compatible floppy. I also use a free
server on my PC called TYPSoft FTP Server which I got from
http://typsoft.n3.net. A crossover cable hooks PC ethernet to Mac ethernet. Use
Fetch FTP s/w on the Mac to download from PC to Mac.

My experience is that its very frustrating at the beginning of the PC to Classic
Mac conversion (or should I say "Switch" :-). The s/w you need is on the web but
you can't get it without the s/w on the web! As you get more Mac s/w it becomes
easier and easier.

Re-reading the above I realize that I have just done the same thing that used to
frustrate me when I started taking advice from these Mac lists: I made it sound
easy and assumed that you would understand what the hell I was talking about!
Please email me if I need to explain more :-)

Re: Booting an LC475.

2002-06-25 Thread John Niven

Darn it, you are so right! So the pickle posts here as well as the compact list.
Well my experience with Compact Macs fooled me - I didn't check the pram battery
because I expected to be able to boot without it. After my post yesterday I
found a reference to the LC475 that suggested that the video would not start
without a good battery. Last night I checked it with a voltmeter and it was
dead, so I tried the "turn-on, turn-off, turn-on" trick, and it booted just
fine! :-) It seems to have 20Mb of ram, and an FPU. I understand that this must
mean that the CPU has been upgraded from a 68LC040 to a full 68040.

As you know from the compact list, I also scored a M1025 two-page monochrome 21"
monitor! Can I use this with the LC475? Do I need a special video board? Anybody
know where I can get more tech info on this monitor (pinouts at least)?

Cheers,
   John

Booting an LC475.

2002-06-24 Thread John Niven

Hi quadlisters!

I'm new round here, hope I've come to the right place. I've been playing with
compact Macs up till now (SE/30 & Classic II). However, a recent charity shop
trip yielded an LC475 for $5, and I gave way. This was primarily because my 12
year old son went dumpster diving (I've trained him well :-) at his school and
came home with a Multi Scan 14 inch display (M4222). I thought I might be able
to do something with it. When I got the LC475 home I found the hard drive was
gone, but it did have a LapisColor 24 LC video card in it (is that good?).

So I tried to boot it with a OS 7.1 disk tools floppy. It went "bong" (rather a
horrid sound actually) but then nothing happened. I can't hear the floppy start,
and nothing came up on the screen (stayed blank). I unplugged the Lapis video
board, and plugged the monitor into the standard socket, with the same result.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
   John
