Re: [q] System 7.5.3
It's been a while... but a .sea file is a self-expanding archive which you need to run (on a mac [or emulator]) to get a disk image, which can be copied onto a disk. once you have it on a disk, you should be able to boot to that disk. I should be more clear: You don't just drop the file onto the disk, you have to use something like diskcopy to image the image onto the disk. Re: [q] MAC READING PC FILES
I forwarded that to him. I hate to see effort go wasted, even if he was a TROUBLEMAKER. On Wednesday 20 April 2005 05:57, Sque wrote: Justin Zaza wrote: SO I TAKE A FILE OFF MY QUADRA, ON A PC FORMATTED DISK, AND TRY TO OPEN IT WITH THE EMULATOR, BUT ALAS, IT CANNOT FIND THE PROGRAM THAT CREATED IT. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO GET IT TO BE READ? IF I STUFF IT ON THE QUADRA, THEN PUT IT ON THE PC DISK, THEN UNSTUFF IT ON THE EMULATOR, IT THEN IS READABLE, BUT I HOPE IT DOESNT HAVE TO COME TO THIS. MY QUESTION IS, IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE FILE TO BE READ, WITHOUT HAVING TO FIRST STUFF IT? YOU SEE, I ALREADY TRANSFERRED LIKE A THOUSAND FILES WITHOUT STUFFING THEM. Depends on the file. You know macs have to parts to each file, one resource and one is data. Data is easy enough to understand, its the data. ;) The Resource part or fork is the bit that tells the mac what to do with the data, wonderful idea in the 80's but a load of crap now. So transfering the file straight to a pc means you loose the resource fork so once it gets to the emulator the virtual mac has no idea what to do with it - wonderful isn't it? Now you have worked out that stuffit type file will transfer as both data and resource files are compressed into one file. If you have ethernet on the quadra and ethernet on the pc hook them both up to a hub and use Appleshare between the quadra and Basilisk II just as you would between two macs. BII comes with ethernet drives to enable this, add them to your network card on the pc, the ethernet tab in BII will show something under other than greyed boxes once its done, from there you have a networked mac in your pc which you can use to talk to other macs. Not much good without a nic in both machines so you'd be back to stuffing files in that case. Hope that helps, please dont use capitals for your messages, nobody likes it, it means your yelling and you wont find many answers that way. Cheers. Re: [q] multiple users setup for 8.1 or7.5?
I may be off base but I think it must be doable. I suspect At Ease can be configured to handle that stuff because IIRC when I was in HS they locked down the machines with a fairly early version which we were not able to floppy-boot to get around... Again I can't be certain but if memory serves (it doesn't always of course, and this was some 12 or so yrs ago) this should be doable. Anyway it bears experimentation. Cheers, Stephen Chuck Bush wrote: That has always been a disadvantage of At Ease. Once you have booted the machine with another startup disk, you can go into the preferences folder, and throw away At Ease Preferences. All your passwords and settings are then gone, and anyone can reboot on the main disk without any passwords. I've actually liked that feature, because I have bought old machines with At Ease protection, and I was able to change the password that way! here's a quick rundown for you: cli is comand line interpreter, as you'd use in DOS or unix, as opposed to a GUI like Mac OS kde is a window environment which runs on unix-type systems, of which linux and BSD are members. It's an implementation of X-windows. nix box is a reference to a Unix or linux computer. The way X-windows is set up, you can run programs on one machine and have them display on another computer's monitor. This can be done in a completely cross-platform manner, so that as long as whatever machine you're displaying on can run some sort of X-window environment you can display the output from whatever type of machine you like. Exodus is one of those programs which will display X-windows on macintosh OS. I haven't used it in probably 8 years but it was good then so I'm sure it's great now. hope this helps. Re: [q] translation needed
I guess to tie it all together I should mention for the uninitiated that it takes a lot more processor and memory to run graphics quickly which is why the machine is mentioned as being mostly only good for CLI. Of course if the program is being executed remotely and only displayed locally, as is possible with X-windows, less resources are being used locally and thus you would see a speed increase if you are using the machine for display only and not program execution. Re: [q] 10/100
It would make sense to use a crossover cable and go directly from one computer to another if possible. Any routing hardware/packet padding can be considered overhead which can tamper with your numbers (should not be too big a deal though as long as it's consistent). The OS in question would be a big factor though, you'd need to make sure you have the same (and sufficiently high to expose any hardware bottleneck) TCP receive window on both benchmark machines. I don't know how to set this in classic macOS. In 'doze you gotta hack the registry, in *nix you gotta write to a /proc file. It may not be trivial to accomplish, but it's a huge factor that really can't be disregarded if you're doing TCP/IP throughput checking. It might make sense to use a (non-routed) protocol such as appletalk to measure throughput if you can find a way to get numbers from that type of transfer. On Monday 19 July 2004 19:35, Powermac wrote: Not sure, any ideas? I tried a quick transfer from a PC setup as a ftp server, the 7500 and the 840AV. Speeds were very low (400K/sec to the 7500, and 300K/sec to the 840av). I used the same version of Fetch (ftp client) for both transfers, and I know the PC can dump at least a few MB/sec. I did see my router light up like a Christmas tree even though I used the local PC ip to do the connection (169.254.*.*) so it wouldn't connect through my cable modem over the net (which cant do more then 350K/sec anyway). If I use a PC for the source file I am stuck using TCP/IP (which is why I tried to test speed using an FTP server). Thanks for this great/interesting info! I will check it. Cheers, Stephen PS do you think it should work even with a dead pram battery or should I swap it for a good one just to be sure (that case design is a bear, you have to remove the logic board just to swap a battery)? In general, this strange condition occurs when the computer has been disconnected from mains for a certain time (regardless the status of the PRAM battery, the presence of NU-BUS cards, keyboard etc.). My guess is that some 'access conflict' occurs between the 68040 and the DSP preventing the first from taking control and start boot since I have never noticed a similar behavior on the otherwise similar Q800. [q] Quadra 840AV boot conditions
Hi y'all, new to the list. I have a quick question regarding a Q840AV I ran across in a local goodwill store. I haven't bought it yet because of the following: I plugged it and the monitor (a rasterops w/rasterops nubus card) and turned everything on. It didn't boot, just gave me LEDs on monitor and computer. I swapped out the cmos battery for a brand new one but this didn't resolve anything, but I should note at this point that nothing is attached to the ADB. Anyone know if I need to have a keyboard and/or mouse attached to this? FWIW I also tried pulling the card and attaching the monitor to onboard video with the same results: nothing. no bootup sound even. Is this computer shot or should I have another go at it with a mouse/keyboard? Are there any other obvious items I should check? I used to repair these things when they were new, but not since... I am a bit rusty. Cheers/Thanks, Stephen -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: [q] Quadra 840AV boot conditions
Thanks for the tip, I will try again. I'm just dying to give my wife the opportunity to kill me for bringing home another obsolete computer (at least it's better than the NetBSD-IIsi). Anyone got a particular resource with a collection of this kind of info that I should know about? 660AV 840AV software suggestions ..
This is probably specific to 660av 840av owners. I've tried searching the archives to be sure someone didn't already ask this but .. what options do we have for making use of the super cool video hardware in the 840av? I've played around with the Apple Video Player .. its fine for grabbing frames and doing quick clips .. but what about editing? I've heard that for multitrack audio, a piece of software called 'DECK' runs great on the 840av. I'm not looking for something as fancy as premier .. I would just like to sequence and edit video clips I capture on the 840AV .. Any pointers? Quicktime PRO? Also, does the system need VRAM in order to push video out? I've followed instructions to have it display on a TV monitor but the monitor's and sound control panel made no mention of 'using the TV as a display device' .. maybe I need to look for that elsewhere?
