[Quantum Owners] Xtreme bits

2015-02-21 Thread Craig Evans

Hi,

Following a garage clear out I have found a few spare parts from my Xtreme
build a few years ago. Any takers? Would need collecting or use of the infamous
Quantum Post :-)

Xtreme rear springs -standard (used)
Xtreme o/s (I think) front cycle arch bracket (new)
Xtreme exhaust bracket (new)
Pinto mechanical fuel pump (new)
Pancake air filter chrome (new)

I do have a few photos but can't see how to post them.

Cheers
Craig

Hi All

Just got back from setting up the F1 simulator at work.

It costs £10 for an out lap and 2 timed laps.

Now the question is, is who will be the fastest QOC driver.

See you here on Sat 10am to 3.30pm

Eddie

I personally have enough photos of my own to do this, but rather that seeing
the same cars all the time, I would like some new and interesting pictures
to add. Therefore, if you have an interesting photo of a Quantum that you
have taken I would like to post it on the club website.

I know some people like to obscure their numberplate when posting pictures
onto the internet, so if that is the case just let me know when you send the
image and I'll make the necessary edits, if you're not comfortable doing it
yourself. Additionally I may need to make edits or crops to the image, but
I'll try to keep that to a minimum.

Please send you image(s), the larger the better, directly to my email
address, st...@h4-turbo.co.uk, rather than to this group and I can start
work on a gallery of cars. Make sure to send your full name, so I can
credit the photo to you, plus any other useful information I can add. If I
get enough submissions I'll create a gallery for each model.

As an aside, the club's web team are always interested in feedback about the

Re: [Quantum Owners] Another screen bites the dust...

2011-05-27 Thread Craig Evans
Doug,
I know how you feel. Mine went on the way to Stoneleigh so am now on my third
after 3500 miles. I was lucky that Mark Burley had taken a screen to the show
and very kindly offered to deliver it to me on his way home, saving me the
carriage cost and the risk! I have also purchased the lower extrusion for the
screen with the hope of an improved fit.

Hope your screen arrives safely.

them from stone chipping either. I made sure there was no point
loading or bending on the screen caused by the upper and lower frames
last time I fitted a new screen about a year ago, so I've no real idea
why it broke again. Anyway, just ordered a new one from Quantum, and
while they've only got the standard ones at the moment, albeit now at
over £30 more than they were before, the next set they have ordered
will be thicker. How much I don't know, but hopefully thicker screens
will be stronger. Add postage at £40 to the £80 for the screen, and
vat on top of that, and it's now getting pretty expensive. I wonder
if I can claim on my insurance - I have the club linked FJ policy.
 Any ideas?

Our donor cars are now getting these listings and some kit cars are,

Date: Saturday, 14 May, 2011, 19:53 Anything is only worth what
you can get for it, but that depends on how desparate you are to
 sell it.
The truth is that a Mk2 without MoT is going to have to be pretty
 special to make more than £300 - 400, and a 2+2 £600 - 700. With
MoT and tax, you could say the same cars would be £700 - 800 and
£1000 -1500. I've bought three and sold one in the last year.
 (Don't ask..!)
The above are governed, largely, by the alternatives on the wider
market. Mx5s, MGFs, MR2s, XR2s, etc. etc. and the number of people
with a non-runner kit car in the garage that they have lost
interest in. Often that they bought second hand and didn't build.
Now, the problem for most of us is that, having spent hours and
money on our cars, their open market value is such that we won't
get it back if we sell them. Which is why most of the best cars
aren't for sale. I guess that's a fact of life.
But it leaves the problem that, if your car gets written off, the
only way to replace it is to buy a less special one and do lots of
work to it to get it to the same standard. Which is why we need
agreed value insurance. to cover the work involved. And
particularly if it's someone else's fault - when you would be
really annoyed to be offered the sort of money above for your
immaculate 2+2 turbo 4wd nitrous injection with electric hood,

What temperature does the fan kick in ? I have an 70 or 75 degree switch and
the fan was on constantly, so have changed it back to a higher one ! I am
thinking of getting one of those variable switches.

Cooling when parked up / sat in traffic is when the temp starts going up and
difficult to get back down, so this is useful knowledge.

Any more ?

 Hi Sean,

I fitted a couple of additional vents in the bonnet over the winter as
the cooling fan was running constantly when up to temperature and
would then run for 20 mins when I parked up.

I don't think it has made too much difference to the engine bay
temperature when driving but it has helped the cooling when I park up.
The fan only runs for about 5-10 mins now depending on ambient
temperature of course. I couldn't get my head around the high/low
pressure areas over the bonnet so just plumped for where I thought they
looked best - highly scientific!

 I have attached some pics.

take a look at Dave Bences web site on his extreme build. He put a

I would be inclined to suggest that if you have ventilation holes in
the bonnet, then a low pressure. Should occur above them and thus
 suck air out.
 Good luck

Hi Bill,

It was me. We camped for the weekend with the TSSC at Tertre Rouge. We had
been for a drive around the infield on Saturday evening and parked near the
Dunlop bridge on the way back, to sit in the stand.

Great trip and racing. How hot was the weather?

I did spot a yellow Xtreme in the Supermarket car park just outside the
track on Thursday night. A G plate if I recall.

Hi
I recall that when my appointment confirmation arrived for the registration
inspection for my Xtreme it stated in bold capitals 'IF THE VEHICLE IS
DRIVEN TO THE INSPECTION CENTRE YOUR VEHICLE WILL NOT BE INSPECTED'

Botley near Southampton.

Just seesm ridiculous that you can drive to the IVA (SVA at the time)where
they verify the build quality and safety criteria (and even drive home again
with a list of failures) but once that is proven to be acceptable you have
to trailer it for DVLA inspection.

Mad!

Pete,
I think if they do not say anything I will drive it there, if they
complain I will ask why it is legal to drive 40 miles for an IVA test when
the car has never been on the road and probably at its most unsafe, and to
drive for an MOT but once it has passed both these tests it then becomes
unusable for the road. The answer would be interesting.

Chris thanks very much. Do you know the reason why you cannot drive

It's a grey area and seems to be down to your local DVLA office - the
directgov website doesn't seem to help as it covers MoTs and VIC
inspections, but not the inspection that *may* (their words) be
required after you have applied to register a radically altered car, a
kit car or a kit conversion.

In 2004 my local office (Worcester) said that it was a pre-booked test
that had to be conducted before the car could be taxed and therefore I
was allowed to drive directly to and from the inspection provided that
the car was insured (the way it was rattled off, it sounded like they
were answering a very common question). There were a couple of
other kit cars there at the same time as my inspection with only one
 of then arriving by trailer.

Something along those lines is on my winter to do list as well. I'd like to

The biggest problem I can see is the mic. The bike systems are all based,
obvioulsy, around fitting inside a helmet. Fine if you regularly wear a
crash hat when driving your kit but I don't.

So, as per Ian, if any body has any experience/thoughts on the subject I'd

Got to agree with the use of earplugs or ear bud type earphones. There is no
way I would be able to hear a radio in Kermit even if there were room to put
one!

Earbuds keep the noise out and let you have some form of entertainment on
longer journeys. Anti-social though :-(

I have started looking into a bike type intercom that I could link an ipod
into with two sets of headphones and mics.

Not made any kind of a decision yet though.

Anyone any experience of these?

Hamish,

Have you tried QSC as they keep a stock of sierra parts and had them listed
on their web site as an item you could buy (about £5 I thought).

I am also looking for one as the one on my Xtreme has the central section
missing and the steering column is also missing the self cancelling camber.
So if there are 2 out there somewhere

Regards,

Ian Mac

I went to try and find one from the local breakers (Brighton area) only to
find that around here Pilgrim cars had a standing order for all Sierra parts
that came in to the local breakers.  Whilst Pilgrim do not exist in their
former glory any longer, they appear to have stripped the market here-abouts
of all things related to Sierra steering.  The reaction I got on Sierra
parts in general was Like hen's teeth now!

[Quantum Owners] Re: New Xtreme Owner- again

2009-05-31 Thread Craig Evans

Hi Ian,

Good to have you back. Forgive me stating the obvious but I assume you'll
need IVA and I'm not sure of the implications that brings.

1. I wouldn't imagine indicators have to be self cancelling. Bike engined
kits often use the handle bar controls from the bike and they are not self
cancelling. I would think it would be safer to have it though. There should
be a small notched collar that slides over the steering column. It is this
that strikes the tab on the indicator switch to cancel the action as the
steering wheel is turned.

2. I'm sure there were some previous posts regarding the brake hose length
on the front of the Xtreme.

3. ???

4. Can't help with this one either. Still running the standard down draught
carb.

If you need anything, just let me know.

Regards

Craig

Subject: [Quantum Owners] New Xtreme Owner- again

After I lost my Xtreme last year in the accident and got insurance payout at
Christmas, I started looking for a new car a few weeks ago.
I was looking for a prebuilt example this time so that I could use it
quickly and save the hassle of SVA, etc and it wasn't going to be another
Xtreme or yellow or a pinto engine...but...
when I looked on e-bay and found a yellow Xtreme virtually ready for SVA
with a bid closing at 6pm that night, and it is in Bristol about 6 miles
away from where I live, it seemed it was inevitable that I would once again
be a Quantum owner.
So, I now have an Xtreme in the garage needing, hopefully, minor works to
get it ready for SVA.
I have only just started looking at it and a couple of questions have come
to light and I was hoping for some advice re SVA requirements:-

1. Do the indicators need to be self cancelling? mine do not for some
reason. if needed can anyone advise how to get woring again 2. Front
flexible brake hoses: off side is stretched tight on full
lock one way but near side looks fine the other way. Can anyone assist with
any ideas why this would be? Hoses are not twisted.
3. This chassis is older than my previous Xtreme and I was looking for a
chassis stamp but could not find one: any ideas where to look, or did older
Xtremes not have chassis numbers stamped on them?
4. This car has a pinto engine with twin webber carbs that need tuning as
they only tick over and if you increase revs they just sputter.
How easy is it to balance and set up the carbs or would I be better getting
someone in to do hte work. If so, any idea how much this costs?

Thanks for your assistance.

I am looking forward to finishing and getting back on the road soon

Ian Mac

It seems to be that we are all in good need of a clearing of the cobwebs
session after the latest spell of cold weather.

I propose a wee day trip for anyone who cares to join.

Please let me know if you would be interested; typically I'd suggest meeting
at a convenient public place one Sunday morning in Berkshire or Hampshire,
travelling to a lunch or point of interest spot then returning to the start
point by a different route.

I'm happy to prepare the route in advance, prepare route cards and so on (if
someone can give me a hand to find the route that would be great!). All
abilities are welcome and we would use a follow my lights convoy rule so
that no one is left behind or gets lost. A Quantum is not required,
although if you bring a morgan you may be the odd one out ;-)

Anyone around the area interested? (or any international jet setting morgan
owners?)

Matthew

After 4 long years, two new windscreens, removing the engine twice,
rebuilding the back and front ends twice, blood, sweat and countless cups of
tea, I have finally got my SVA done! Thanks to Paul at Quantum and everyone
on the group for their help.

If you need a vehicle transporter and you are in the north then I can
recommend highly Shane Copnall at Yorkshire Vehicle Movements (07525 900034)
who took me over to Manchester today.

Couple of things. Braided hoses DO need to be 2 inches longer like they are
on the tigers. Earls are a good supplier (hint) rather than Goodridge. To
get the car to self centre then pump the tyres up to 45 psi and grease
everything! Fit the brake balancer as this does effect the brake loading
even with new discs and Green stuff pads at the front. And best advice DONT
TAKE YOUR CAR TO BRISTOL VOSA.

Also latest rumours about the IVA is April 30th and £450. Nothing confirmed
offically by VOSA at the moment though.

Thanks.

Phil.

[Quantum Owners] Re: Xtreme Handbrake Cable

2008-11-09 Thread Craig Evans

Steve,

It's the Seirra one modified. I think it explains how in the manual. I can
dig it out if you need.
QSC do sell modified ones with proper nipples on the ends.

Don't know how easy it will be without removing diff. Not very easy on your
back underneath the car! May be easier if you can get it up in the air.

Cheers

Craig

So something has gone ping and now the handbrake isn't working. I've taken
a brief look underneath and there's a piece of plastic that looks like it
should be attached to something, so I will probably need to replace it.

Firstly is it possible to do this without removing the diff?

What cable is used - looking at the distances it's not a Sierra one.

Steve
