I recall that there is a form of electrostatic spraying. The spray that might otherwise miss the tube is attracted back to it. I was first alerted to this by a (very tallented) car sprayer when he saw I'd painted my pedal bike with smoothrite. Lo and behold what he had predicted occurred, and he got the repaint job a couple of years later (first class it was too). I don't think they were even sandblasted before painting, mine started going rusty even before it was on the road. Almost everything that has been painted on my 2+2 was done with smooth Hammerite including the engine block and aluminium inlet manifold. I think the main thing with it is that people expect to be able to paint it on over rust, which doesn't really work. If the metal is properly degreased and in the case of aluminium, the proper primer used then it seems to stick pretty well. However, i think they did change the formulation since i did most of the 2+2. All that's required (as long as the metal isn't rusty before it's painted!) is to keep the water/air away from it! Brushed on primer, undecoat and Dulux Weathershield gloss (no not the masonry paint) gives excellent results and no brush markes if done properly. Jin did a very nice job on his frame - Think it was Upol? Can you confirm Jin? IMHO the WORST paint for metal is Hammerite - absolute rubbish and shouldn't be sold! rant over. Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Bonnet
Can't say I'm a fan of powdercoating, and galvanising can give distortion problems although it lasts well. All that's required (as long as the metal isn't rusty before it's painted!) is to keep the water/air away from it! A good galvanic primer, undercoat and topcoat can give excellent results, and needn't be expensive. Brushed on primer, undecoat and Dulux Weathershield gloss (no not the masonry paint) gives excellent results and no brush markes if done properly. Jin did a very nice job on his frame - Think it was Upol? Can you confirm Jin? IMHO the WORST paint for metal is Hammerite - absolute rubbish and shouldn't be sold! rant over. Agreed about the poor metal treatment, such a shame on a lovely grp car, and im not a fan of powder coating either, lifts off and rust spreads underneath, i used POR15 on mine, so tough and stuck so well it will not even shot blast off with corse glass grit- i tried, ill never use anything else on something i want to keep, there is an art to applying it but its worth it Also i see the panel behind the coil springs are boxed in, looks neater imo -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Quantum Owners Group group. Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Bonnet
Quantum were told they were being power coated but it wasn't, it was just paint. Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Bonnet
The problem I've found with Hammerite or Smoothrite in the past (going back several years, agreed) was that it seemed to be so brittle that even an ambient temp change seemed to create invisible cracks, and after a couple of years it peeled off in sheets to reveal a lot of rust where water had got behind it. I was first alerted to this by a (very tallented) car sprayer when he saw I'd painted my pedal bike with smoothrite. Lo and behold what he had predicted occurred, and he got the repaint job a couple of years later (first class it was too). Seems a bike is one of the difficult items to spray because there are no flat surfaces - sounds reasonable. - Original Message - From: Jim Hearne To: quantumowners@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, August 04, 2013 8:43 PM Subject: Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Bonnet Quantum were told they were being power coated but it wasn't, it was just paint. Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Bonnet
The reason for original Quantum not having the frames galvanised was due to cost. I have Been advised that they had to be competitive with the rest of the kit car world. One way that I like to protect, and have done so now to quite a few cars is :- shot blast, zinc plate (cold process no distortion) etch prime and then polyurethane paint. Yes it's darn expensive. In fact zinc plating all the metalwork on a coupe costs around £450 ! Then add paint on top. But it will last over 20 years with no further attention. The reason for the 2+2 having a metal frame at the front, was to save labour costs in making the shell. It is very costly to make a full shell in GRP and as you are all aware, the front end of the coupe is a complicated affair. It saves much Time to weld up some square tubing and reduce laminating duties. However it does mean that a front end collision costs a lot to replace the front, so I would recommend that 2+2 owners really take up the agreed value option for your insurance that our club has got for us. At least it should give us enough room on costings to get a new front end made and sprayed. Another reason that Quantum did not protect the metalwork further, is that they really did not expect us to still be driving these cars at this age. A lot of the cars that I deal with are now touching 20 years old. Lets be fair it's amazing that our cars have been so good we still enjoy them now, most production cars would never get this far. Now lets get our cars to do another 20 years, with the help that we get from our committee and the insurance companies, I really do hope that this happens as I would hate to only have a production car and not a Quantum. It just would not seam right. Eddie -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Quantum Owners Group group. Apparently the front subframe is different on early cars, there were I'm informed only 4 round headlight cars made (I have seen 3), this information came from Glyn, who had many years at Stourbridge, then of course KAP, (my friend went to see him this week) so he should know. We have been offered a bonnet (with flaps), which comes with the frame because there are different front frames, my friend is currently exploring this option. I agree totally about the quality of Eddies work. Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 Bonnet
I also thought the round headlight nose was a straight swap with the other one. The different subframes were the standard CVH and then special versions for the Diesel, CVH turbo and Zetec. The CVH turbo certainly had a different inside panel on the bonnet to allow for the radiator being further forward so in that respect the bonnet could need to be matched to the frame. Hiya folks I've got one of the round headlight 2+2, and the chassis / frame is nice 90' angles, whereas the later cars have the front chassis / frame at an angle to allow the flappy gubbins to fit (Technical term for a Saturday!). Can take pics if anyone needs, but will need someone to advise how to attach them on here. ;-) Cannot see why a round bonnet will not fit a later car though. Could you not trial fit with just the mounting / swivel pins at the lower front fitted, and see how it goes?
