That clause does seem to vary with insurers so you have to check to be sure. Some 14? years ago (crikey time flies) I wanted to do a similar thing (MOT many miles away as a way of moving car) so I phoned the local constabulary - very helpful lady said well stricly speaking it's legal, but you aren't meant to be taking the , and if pulled something else will probably be found. I’ve found most insurers will insure an extra car for a week or 2 for a very reasonable amount, £20 to £30. Ideal for selling an old one, or taking one that’s off the road for an MOT.
