Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 2 questions about album art

2009-11-13 Thread jamesg1979

Good morning.

OK, here are a few images which might assist (they might not of
course)

This is one of the offending tracks, you can see it does have an album
tag but only resides in the top level My Music folder.
[image: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/1930/image1jrl.png]

However, when I was searching for this track, I discovered that
actually the Wedding Singer art (which I must admit is starting to
appear in my dreams) is tagged in the search results...

[image: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/9004/image2i.png]

But when I play it in WMP11... No album art

[image: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/1153/image3mr.png]

There is only 1 jpg file in that top level My Music folder which is a
Sly The Family Stone album cover.

Do these help illustrate anything?

Sorry I think it might be me, I hadn't appreciated that SB will look for
any art files in the folder, even if it's the top level My Music folder.
So all the thousands of songs in there that do not reside in an album
folder could then get whatever jpg is in there. Am I right?

Well... There is only one jpg file that resides in there (and it was
hidden) and it is... (drum roll)... Sly The Family Stone - Hot Fun In
 The Summertime
So the Wedding singer must be somewhere else, I even checked in the
Wedding Singer folder and there is no actual image in there, it looks
 like it's embedded.

well, it sounds to me like thats it then.

first off, SBS doesn't use ANY art file, meaning any old one by any
name. it will use ANY art file IT FINDS. it'll only find certain ones
by certain names, or whats embedded.

so what was the filename of the sly file?

secondly, if it found the wedding singer art as an embed in the group
folder, and thats all it found for files in that folder, it might have
used it for the art for all the files in that folder. that would be
very similar behavior to a jpg file it finds in the folder, only its
embedded.

again, if you stop using a group folder, and move files into a
artist\album struture, i think you'll see better results, that at the
very least are easier to troubleshoot.

also, at some point you need to do a cleanup ie. clear the SBS cache
operation, and a full clear and rescan.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 2 questions about album art

2009-11-13 Thread jamesg1979

The sly file is called Sly The Family Stone - Hot Fun In The
Summertime.jpg.
I'm guessing somewhere along the line the blasted wedding singer got
imbedded in the top level folder. I need to test with lots of different
songs tonight really to be sure.

I am getting more and more tempted to mirror your suggested folder
structure.
My concern though is I have thousands of loose songs, a lot of them by
one off artists. Is it necessary to have a folder for every artist even
though there might only be one song?

case.

what you want to do is take that folder [or the loose files] out of
your main music folders, put it somewhere else for the moment. then
setup an empty folder to write to.

then, assuming the tags are otherwise good on these files, i THINK you
can use an app like mp3tag to take ALL those files, and create an
artist\album structure based on the tag data in that blank folder you
made, as well as create new file names.

then copy it all back to your main music folder.

u'll have to ask others how to do that in mp3tag, but i know apps out
there will do it. maybe bliss as well.

2009-11-13 Thread mule

Since we all know that the headphone plugin bug of the controller has
even after more than 12 months not being solved and that one get no
answer to what is the reason for the bug on the Radio nor when it is
going to be addressed:

Could it be that it is a hardware design flaw which could not be solved
by software?

I'm going to wait a few more days and after that i'm going to return
the last Radio i owned too, because of wrongly announced features. Sorry
for not being a loyal customer anymore. But all the things regarding the
SB Radio that happened to me personaly (the people involved do know what
i mean) are driving me mad!

I don't think this relates. Though the detection doesn't work, with
linux internals its still possible to force a specific output (that why
the headphone switcher applet works). So that should work on the radio
as well (and thus should be solveable in software).

Where did you read that there won't be another 7.4.x release ?
Maybe its a problem, that the bug is not marked as 7.5 then (noone is
seeing this one in his filters) ?

I hope someone from logitech sees this thread and can comment on the
current priority of this bug. To be sure you are heard, you should
comment on the corresponding bug-report (and you will see who at least
is notified).

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm through speaker although headphone plugged in?

2009-11-13 Thread mule

I already commented on the bug last week, because i believe that the
given priority level P1 normal is wrong, because normal is defined
as under certain circumstances. I won't believe that plugging a
headphone into an alarm device with a buildin headphone plug is
something special. Especialy because i asked for it and get the official
info that it is intended to work... But still no answer in anyway.

Anyway, IMO, the battery pack and remote package is too expensive for
my tastes. I believe they will still sell, though I think at $25 they'd
sell a lot more and still provide decent profit. Am I allowed to have
an opinion? I know how much it costs to manufacture and ship remotes
and AA NiMH cells like this in China. All the power to Logitech for a
decent revenue stream, I just really wish that at $200 it had been
rolled into the base radio package.

Considering your knowledge and experience in this area I think it would
be wonderful for you to manufacture alternate battery packs that can be
purchased for under $25. With a warranty of course should anything go
wrong.

I agree that the S-Radio should have had the battery standard, along
with the remote for that matter, but unfortunately such decisions lie in
the brains of marketing dweebs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm only works when connected to mysqueezebox?

2009-11-13 Thread 0xdeadbeef

IMHO the first thing that really needs to be fixed is the Radio loosing
connection to MYSB.COM. Indeed after more than 6 hours in standby (soft
off), there's a 90% chance that my Radio looses the connection to
MYSB.COM and doesn't even try to reconnect when I press e.g. the alarm
button. And let me emphasize that neither my internet connection nor the
WLAN setup is the problem. Indeed even the stream is played at the
correct time, so this can't be a connection problem on my side.

The main problem with this is that I need to get to the menu and select
the Last.fm entry since this seems to be more or less the only way to
re-establish the broken connection. There are several facts that hint
that the Radio is not even aware that the connection was lost and thus
gets into an undefined state as the software developers obviously forgot
to add a sensible fault handling for this case.
The fact that the Radio just beeps in this state when I press e.g. the
alarm button instead of trying to reconnect is a major design flaw.
Indeed there should be also a timer event that checks the connection
every e.g. 10 minutes. Else chances are that the Radio doesn't receive a
new alarm setup via MYSB which is really a big problem since you have to
rely on a programmed alarm.

As a side note: it's not only that the alarm menu is not shown in this
faulty state. Also the whole system behavior is erratic. E.g. while the
programmed station is played, it usually stops after a few minutes
instead of playing for the full alarm time. Which is also a very big
problem as chances are that I miss the alarm or fall asleep again when
it plays only for a few minutes.
Sometimes playing continues in this case when I press the knob,
sometimes it doesn't. In the end I really need to navigate to the main
menu and select Last.fm before the alarm menu pops up. And all of this
in darkness and without glasses.

Obviously this doesn't happen for all customers so maybe it's related
to dynamic IP or maybe it's a problem in my local MYSB node (the system
info hints that the Radio indeed connects to a nearby datacenter and not
to the American server). Yet it's really a shame that such a basic
design fault survived the beta phase and was not even fixed with 7.4.1.

I understand that some features like a better NP screen and
customization features need some time. Yet the most basic functions for
a bedside radio MUST work soon. And nothing is more important than a
working and reliable alarm feature.

So I REALLY, REALLY hope that I don't have to wait for December or
January when 7.5 is released, before at least the alarm works reliably.
This could be such a great product with a mature software and a better
display layout. Currently it's pretty much frustrating.
