[SlimDevices: Radio] SR and Linksys with WEP

2010-01-04 Thread jweber

Has anyone gotten the SqueezeBox Radio to work with a Linksys router,
using WEP security?

I'm using a LinkSys WRT110 wireless router, with 64-bit WEP. After I
enter the password, the Radio tries to connect for a while, then fails.
I've updated to the latest firmware, and I've tried setting the router's
Authentication Type to both "Auto" and "Shared Key" (the latter was
necessary to get my SqueezeBox 1 to work).

If I use WPA instead, it works. I know that's more secure, but I'd like
to continue using my SqueezeBox 1, which only supports WEP. Any ideas?

I don't know of any way to do that with KidsPlay. On Boom you could
probably use a sequence of 'button' commands like

Code:

button browse; button home; button down; button down; button down; button
right

but in SBS 7.4.2, Radio doesn't respond to 'button' CLI commands. That
doesn't surprise me much (though it is disappointing), as normally
button presses, especially for navigating lists, would be handled by the
software running on Radio itself. About the best you could probably do
now is use the Settings > Advanced > Beta Features > Shortcuts to remap
a button to act like the Favorites button.

Thank you all for your help. I did however "cheat" and made it a wired

I'll run the cable down into my home's crawl-space and then up behind
the couch in the living room and connect it to the radio which will
reside on an end table next to the couch. Maybe I'll attempt wireless in
the future.
But for now, it's playing wonderful classical music from Germany!

Most alarm clocks show the time as it always appears when an alarm goes
off (and there is a separate snooze button).

Perhaps the screen when an alarm fires should be the normal (or near to
normal) clock screen (as chosen by the user) -- with a small menu option
for snooze.

Not being able to easily see the time when the alarm goes off, almost
defeats one of the main points of having the alarm go off at a set
time.

Turn off alarm menu choice is NOT needed, since we all know the
pause/stop button and the power off button. If snooze is needed, make
it smaller and the TIME larger.

There == I have spoken. Let it be done. There can be no other
sensible approach.

Mr. Joltdude,

1.) Thanks for sticking up for me, a lowly SB radio owner who was told
to Logitech presales that the SB radio included tone controls (treble
and bass) in the audio settings on the radio menu.

2.) I agreed with you entirely that the cognoscenti of this fine forum
are total SB snobs that do not understand the commercial market. The
breakthrough and potentially "ipod like - SB Jesus Radio" is missing
simple radio tone controls that are present on EVERY decent radio sold
in the last 30 years.

3.) All we need is an acknowledgment that yes treble and bass control
is a significant missing feature and will be firmware added in the next
xx months.

4.) After reading posts from Mr. Snarlydick, it appears that the
general recommendations for a sincere SB questions is everything that is
bitchin' and you should buy 3 of each for everything "you are trying to
accomplish". GMAFB, All we want to do is listen to the damn radio that
doesn't sound like a POS with way to much bass for talk radio, etc.

Salute

I, personally, really don't care about the 'now playing' screen while

I'd also like to see the alarm dialog stay there for as long as nothing

Sort of -- but then the alarm prompt screen doesn't go away. The
"continue listening" is to enable viewing the large clock or the now
playing screen. So the alarm is acknowledged, but you don't turn it off
by acknowledging the alarm.

But what if you wake up and want to listen to music in bed for a while,
but you do NOT want to see the alarm prompt on your cool LCD screen
(which just sits there, for snooze or turn alarm off) -- in other words,
see now playing screen, etc. Shouldn't something else happen (ie.
prompt go away after a period of time or something)?

It seems to me that there should be a 3rd possibility to continue
listening, where the alarm prompt doesn't sit there hiding all other
info.

Depends on the room and what you're trying to accomplish. I don't
think a nursery is going to be the ideal listening environment, so it's
not like you need great separation and such. The Radio works great in
kitchens, bedrooms, offices, etc... It can be loud enough to annoy
people.

>
> i'm thinking the lcd interface is probably easier to work with, is the

Maybe... no announcement, though, and no sign of anything to replace
it.

Certainly 'some day' it will happen... but that would be several months
or more away is my guess. Sort of like eventually there will be hard
drives with 10TB on them some year.. but I wouldn't hold my breath, and
delaying purchases because In The Future Technology Will Be Moreso would
mean you'd never buy it... there is always something cooler in the
future.

Both the Boom and the Radio are nice toys. The radio is a bit sexier,
but the boom has a bit better sound dispersion (the wonders of two
speakers).

Either is a fine choice, depending really on your personal tastes.

I have both: Boom by the bed, Radio at work, and wouldn't trade
either.

Since radio's are heavily pushed by Amazon and others (they've been
sneaking down to around $149 off and on), if you can get a deal on a
radio, it's a damned hard price to beat.

Boom is better, IMHO mainly because it's stereo instead of mono but
also because Logitech have had the time to optimize the sound a bit more
in it. In some rooms you don't need the stereo effect and for these the
Radio will work great.

diveganesh;502691 Wrote:

Your guess is as good as mine but the Boom is based on the old
architecture so I personally suspect we will see an upgrade with a LCD
display sometime in the future. You will not get any official answer on
this question because only Logitech knows and they don't comment future
unreleased products.

For my personal usage the Radio fits on my bedside table while the Boom
is too large.

I'm not sure the LCD on the Radio is easier to work with than the VFD
display on the Boom, it's more colorful and looks nicer but from a
usability point of view the main difference is only that you can see
several lines simultaneously on the Radio. The Boom still has better
support for customization through third party plugins than the Radio, so
if you are thinking of customizing it to make a easy simple menu
structure the Boom is a better choice IMHO.

[SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio or Boom?

2010-01-04 Thread diveganesh

i've had a squeezebox player hooked up to my stereo for years and i'm
looking to buy a boombox-like product for my kid's nursery.

my choices are to buy a decent sounding ipod dock based stereo (i have
an old ipod i could load up with his music) or go the squeezebox route
(since i have all my music on the SB server anyway).

i prefer the SB route (setup gremlins notwithstanding), is the SB radio
more fitting for the bedside table or would you recommend it as the only
system in a room? does the SB boom sound significantly better than the
SB radio?

i'm thinking the lcd interface is probably easier to work with, is the
boom up for an upgrade to the lcd screen?

while researching this, i ended up upgrading to the 7.4 server and
found myself having to deal with mysqueezebox.com (not sure i had to but
it happened anyway!). what a mess...a very disappointing move.

i will xpost on the boom forum as well.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox Server with AVG or Avira

2010-01-04 Thread BonzoUK

Has anybody successfully got Squeezebox Server to run with either Avira
Premium Security Suite or AVG 9.0, please? (running PC with XP
Professional)

The settings in Avira are quite cryptic (I am reasonably "technical")
but even with the Avira Firewall on the "Low" setting (Flooding and
Portscan are detected and there are no UDP or TCP rules applied), the
Squeezebox Server cannot talk to the SB Radio. the Diagnostics tab shows
Ports 3483/9000/9090 all failed. (Incidentally no mention of Port 9090
in the downloaded "Feature Guide".)

The firewall event log shows that it has blocked mysqld.exe. I don't
know why this should be as this is listed in the "Application rules" as
"Privileged" and "Allow"

I must have good protection against viruses etc., having just had a
very expensive exercise resulting from a malicious virus. AVG might be
an alternative but has presented a new set of problems in relation to
the network addresses.

You could connect the SBR to your router using an ethernet cable then
ssh in and add the pass key directly to the wpa_supplicant.conf file.
Probably just as easy taking the time to do it using the wheel though

[SlimDevices: Radio] Preset to specific location in menu tree

2010-01-04 Thread mbonsack

Is there any way to set a Radio preset to a specific location in the
menu tree rather than a playlist/song/station? I'd like a preset for,
say, all of my Pandora stations -- but not necessarily a specific one.
That way I could tap one of the presets with the radio off and be
presented with my list of Pandora stations from which to choose without
having to go through the tree. Similarly, I could set others up for
specific genres from my own library, etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] New 'alarm off' Feature/Change in 7.4.2 and 7.5

bluegaspode;502499 Wrote:

The problem comes if you want to do anything else other than
stop/snooze. Eg, Get song details to see who is performing on the song,
look at weather forecast, check the news via Info Browser, etc.

If you touch the knob, it stops the music. That may be unexpected,
because you've forgotten that the music started via an alarm.

I use an alarm for waking up in the morning. But I also use alarms
elsewhere in the house, eg. so LBC News is playing in the kitchen, when
I finally make it downstairs. i.e. to schedule music to start at a
certain time; no need for snooze in this instance.

It's a pity that the Radio doesn't have a dedicated Snooze button like
the Boom. Very strange when you think that this is designed as an alarm
clock. As a result, hacking functionality like that into navigation
buttons and popup menus, etc, is always going to make things awkward.

Not everyone is going to be happy with whatever the final outcome is,
if alarms are not adequately supported through configuration.

bluegaspode;502499 Wrote:
> The problem with showing the 'Now Playing'-screen is, that it doesn't

On my SB3 (bedroom - used as an alarm clock), I use the MusicInfoSCR
plugin to configure the screen display to show Now Playing information
AND the current time (which is adequately big enough). There is another
plugin that can toggle the display to show date/time and then song
info.

The MusicInfoSCR plugin for SB3 also has a screensaver display setting
whilst in Alarm mode. i.e. you could configure it to only show the
time, and then when out of alarm mode, show NP.

Radio/Touch doesn't have an alarm screensaver mode; it would help a lot
if there were such a mode - there could be a screensaver mode to show an
alarm menu (like it currently does), or show NP info, or show the time,
or blank.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] It wakes you up but doesn't tell you what time it is?

2010-01-04 Thread squishy

For me, brightness is also a factor in this discussion. When the alarm
wakes you up, it might be handy for the brightness to increase -
regardless of whether the auto-dim is on or not. If the radio is in
auto-dim mode, then it really is very dim, large letters barely visible
unless you're with a foot or two. This is perfect in the middle of the
night, but not so clever when you need to see smaller stuff such as the
snooze menu.

Perhaps my request is really that auto-dim should only apply when in
the unit is in standby ?

Unfortunately this thread is not a very good representation of how
these forums are in general. People that are normally very low key got
their fur ruffled by the postings in this thread and I can't say that I

You have some good points, but I think you should spend some more time

He may be crossposting, but hes got a really good point.
Emailing Logitech's (suggestions) is usually a waste of time, and the
more I own the Radio, the more i want to return it...

1. The forums atitude is generally.. Well you should have bought the
more expensive one if you wanted it to do what you wanted.. BZZT.. no.
its a radio, it should be able to do some things out of the box

2. Theres a lot of audiophile snobbery on this forum. its an MP3/Flac
radio. get over yourselves...

3. Id really like to see some responses from Logitech but they seem to
only care about the Touch/Duet and higher end products.. If you don't
want to make a low/mid end product that does the job, you should have
NOT released the Radio.. Ever since Logitech took over for Slim Devices.
the server software has just been more crippled and made even more
incompatible with anything but a Squeezebox (reminds me of
apple/itunes)... and it doesn't even do that well.. If anyone would like
to puchase a Radio. mine is for sale..

4. Did i mention the requirement for a bunch of third party plugins to
do things I expect the server/hardware to do mostly out of the box? I
shouldn't need hacks to do some really obvious tasks... the UI needs
work and i shouldnt have to kludge it together myself.

The alarm does show the time, although in the latest version the screen
will disappear after sixty seconds and show the "now playing" screen

Actually you are right !
There is no need for an extra "Continue Listening" because the music is
playing anyway (well at least as long as the alarm is going, which I
think is about an hour as the default ?)

One more point why I'm against an extended 3-point-menu - not only I
cannot read/navigate the Radio at alarm time because its dark and the
display is too dim ...
I also don't want to have to put on my glasses just to find the right
option.
And also I have sleep in the eyes ... in 7.4.1 I can do everything I
need 'beeing blind' - in 7.4.2 thats not possible anymore.

>
> I have no desired to turn off music when I'm still in bed. I want it to

I have two alarms scheduled - one for me and one for my wife.
If 'my' alarm starts, I either turn it off quite fast (so that my wife
can go on sleeping until the second alarm rings for her) or I select
snooze on the very hard mornings !

So turning off the alarm (including audio) or selecting snooze are my
basic usage patterns for an alarm clock.
If one wants to listen to music, you neither select stop or snooze but
just have it going - already possible today (but without seeing which
music is playing).
The problem with showing the 'Now Playing'-screen is, that it doesn't
show the current time big enough - so having the alarm popup with a
bigger time for me is more important than the 'Now playing'-screen.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] New 'alarm off' Feature/Change in 7.4.2 and 7.5

2010-01-04 Thread Philip Meyer

It's all too complex.

There shouldn't be a popup dialog with options. The big knob shouldn't
be multi-purpose. Leave it for navigation only, and not for
snooze/alarm off/volume or any other non-navigation.

I want music to come on when I schedule it, and show what is playing
(and what the time is), and stay on until I choose to stop.

That's how every alarm I've ever used works.

I have no desired to turn off music when I'm still in bed. I want it
to play (and see what is playing) until I get up and turn it off.

That's why I raised the bug/enhancement request, to allow this type of
behaviour to be configured for an alarm. i.e. if alarm timeout is set
at 0, it should work as above. Unfortunately, it seems like the bug has
been hijacked and made the system even worse.

Isn't this how it works now?
Continue Listening - Don't press anything
Snooze - Press Large Knob
Off - Press Power

I don't like the snooze message disappearing either as sometimes I wake
up to music that have a very quiet and slow intro - which means that by
the time it wakes me up I can't snooze. Though what i may do is simply
have 2 alarms set up and use the second as it it were the snooze.

All alarm clocks I've used stop the sound when I turn off the alarm

bluegaspode;502395 Wrote:

I like to see what's playing when the alarm is active.
I like the music to be turned off automatically after a timeout, for
example 15 minutes.
I like to be able to stop the music manually if I like to.

The problem with the 7.4.1 alarm clocks is:
- It doesn't show what's playing
- It doesn't hide the alarm snooze window when the alarm is deactivated
automatically after the alarm timeout

Both these problems are solved in 7.4.2 with the 59 second auto hide
snooze window feature.

My alarm usage has actually changed a bit since I got the Radio. With
my old alarm clock I used two different modes:
- Beep mode: turn off the alarm as fast as I can then lay down and wake
up for a minute and two and than get up
- Radio mode: listen to music a while and then turn off the alarm and
get up.

With the Radio I instead us this mode:
- Let the alarm play music and when the music stops after 15 minutes
it's time to get up.

The new behavior actually suit my needs as long as the music stops when
the alarm is turned off with the timeout. I'm guessing it does stop the
music after the timeout ?

Personally, I'd still like off to mean off, I'd rather use the Home
button to hide snooze window. When I manually want to turn off the alarm
I like to do it with a button, I don't like the idea of having to turn
the knob to just turn off the alarm.

I wonder why off doesn't mean off anymore ? If it would turn off the
sound, we could have a behavior like:
- People that use snooze have to use it within 59 seconds
- People that doesn't use snooze and want to turn of the alarm
immediately can do it either with the knob or the off button
- People (like myself) which like the music to play until the timeout
ends, can just leave it playing and after 59 seconds it starts to show
the Now Playing screen saver instead. The music would be turned off
automatically after the timeout or manually by hitting off.
