Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Power Outage and Alarm Reliability

2010-02-23 Thread bluegaspode

Problems with alarm you will have, when the network or server is
unreliable.

Say that your router didn't properly reboot after a power outage, or
the radio is faster booting than your router not getting a proper IP
...

You were just lucky I'd say that in your circumstances you didn't face
problems.

I know that Ben checked in code to do so (and I also see it beeing

(beta) user said it wasn't working.

I'm sure I mentioned this at least twice (on a bug comment and in the

I have to chime in on Marc about the one bug where the alarm-volume
starts load and only after a short second starts to fade in
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15239). This Bug has been
mentioned in December, was reproducible (50%) by several people in late
January (including Marc and me providing logs). Now 7.4.2 is out of the
door and the bug gets traction even from the developers (who - what a
wonder - are able to reproduce it as well in the end).

But people wanting to use alarm (facing this bug as it only happens in
certain setups) are still left alone with 7.4.2 :(

A traditional desktop PC used as a 'server' will draw 100W ticking

My annual marginal cost for leaving that computer on for a year is 0.1

2nd grade math tells me I could afford a new SB Touch per year and

Hogwash. I bet those figures include the monitor. Generally 50% of

To all those folks building their own battery packs, you had better make
sure that you get the temperature sensor correct. It is -the- critical
component used to control charging. Get it wrong and you are likely to
get either something that is non-functional (will not charge, or
overcharges and boils the batteries), or something that catches fire.

This is all I intend to say on the matter. Just take it as a friendly

Well that's like using a 1950s car and comparing the gas mileage to
today's vehicles. A modern PC or imac shouldn't be a major cause for
concern, anymore than any other electronic product in a home (such as an
a/v receiver or TV -- which is not 100% off, as it is waiting for a
remote command).

So unless one goes around unplugging every device not in use, I say
just keep the durn thing on.

That's why I was asking - to sort fact from supposition.

The reason I'm interested in this in particular is I'm building my own
pack and on my first test I was monitoring the temperature.

The temperature rose fairly slowly - after a couple of hours the
temperature started to climb more rapidly (as expected for a charged
battery) and I was hoping that charging would then stop.

However, it reached 40 degrees C but which I don't beleive is too high
for a NiMH cell but i didn't have any more time to monitor the
temperature so I unplugged.

I haven't had any spare time since to check my wiring, the voltages at
the taps etc. Hopefully I'll have some more time soon.

I suppose it is possible that different capacities of cells have
different thermal responses when charging. My cells are 2600mAh.

Off Topic:

Can power be a concern, sure it can depending on where one lives. So
build/buy an Atom based Vortexbox Server so you can leave it on 24/7/365
for under 50 Bucks a year (less then $25 in most places). Or do a
SheevaPlug and get down to $10 to $15 a year for 24/7/365.

Of course with a library small enough to put on a single USB drive gets
one down to the power required only for a Touch and the USB drive (@ 9

eap,

You are just way out in left (right?) field with this one. 99% of the
computers made in the last few years have energy settings that put them
into a hibernate mode after a few minutes of inactivity.

My iMac hibernates perfectly and when hibernating uses about 3W of
power. It takes only a few seconds to wake up so I'm not in any way
being hobbled by not having it up and running 24/7.

Even though it's an efficient machine, it still uses about 40W of power
when it's on (with display off) vs hibernating.

So, keeping it on for an extra 16 hours a day would consume roughly
.5kW per year or about 150 killowatts per year.

This is not a trivial amount of power.

Multiply this by 1M homes that currently do NOT keep their PC on 24/7
and you can see that this is a huge increase of WASTED energy for the
application of an ALARM CLOCK!!

There is no defensible reason that you need a PC on 24/7 for alarms to
work on the SB Radio. Logitech is more than capable of modifying the
software so that the SB Radio takes its time from NTP (so that it is
always accurate) and stores all alarm events completely LOCALLY with no
interaction from SB Server or My Squeeze servers.

[SlimDevices: Radio] album art but I've got a NAS

2010-02-23 Thread padzster

Hi
Just got my squeezebox radio which i LOVE.
I've just got a question about album art. Before I go on let me tell
you my setup:

I've got my music on my QNAP NAS on \\qmultimedia\music\artist\album
I only use iTunes for ipod pc access so my iTunes library is located
on my PC accessing the music library on the NAS. I used the Get Artwork
function from iTunes to get various album artwork. I have since noticed
that there is an artwork directory under \MyMusic\iTunes\AlbumArtwork.

Now on my Squeezebox radio some albums are coming up with artwork but
others (which have art on itunes) aren't. Does that make sense? I'm just
wondering where the SB Radio is accessing the artwork files from.
Ideally I would like to be able to add artwork for all tracks so would
like to find out the ideal location to store them.

Finally, is there some program or more automatic way of getting pics,
and putting them in the right place for every single album, or even
track???

Thanks in advance!

40 watts x 16 hours x 365 days = 233.6 KillowattHours (KwH)

233.6 x $.10 (I'll give you 10 cents per KwH which is a lot) = $23.00
per year. I'm not gonna cry over $23.00 a year (do you unplug your a/v
receivers and TVs at night)? They eat up electricity doing nothing too.

By the way, I think (but I'm not sure) that there is a way to have
squeezebox wake up your PC from hibernate mode (if not this firmware,
then new firmware). I thought you had it OFF completely. If you
hibernate, there might be another way.

but it is certainly worth it for the connivence of having everything
just there all the time.

There are loads of options for reducing the power usage further;
ShivaPlug, atom boards, VIA boards, Green HDDs, etc, etc.

By the way, I think (but I'm not sure) that there is a way to have
squeezebox wake up your PC from hibernate mode (if not this firmware,
then new firmware). I thought you had it OFF completely. If you
hibernate, there might be another way.

You are continuing to miss the point. No one should need to leave a
computer on 24X7 for an *alarm clock* to work reliably!

I do run a server 24X7 but my parents, brother, sister and 99% of my
friends have absolutely no interesting in doing this just so that they
know they can wake up reliably in the morning when a $5 alarm clock is
perfectly capable of doing the same job.

And for the record .10 is a pretty LOW rate for electricity. Many
parts of the country are higher than that and prices are quite a bit
higher in much of europe and asia.

We personally pay about .09 per kwh for electric and the rates have
been going up at a faster level than inflation for the past 5 years now.

Have you set the experimental option in SB Server for extract artwork
from iTunes?

Yes, by all means Logitech should stop selling to people that aren't
computer geniuses because they haven't implemented basic internal alarm
capabilities in the SB Radio that aren't dependent on an external server
helping the alarm to function properly.

Brilliant. If you were responsible for their business plan they

It is also a radio. The internet radio does not function at all

Go ahead and shut down (may have to remove power though)... it downloads

I've found this happens often on firmware upgrades - but, if you do

Where is a definitive and full list of all of the fixes for 7.4.2?

I see this list, but there is not one word of alarms that everyone is

Version 7.4.2
Bug Fixes:
Fixed UPnP compatibility with Simplify Media server.

within a file.
Added missing Monkey's Audio (APE) decoder binaries for i386 FreeBSD,

(Gordon Harris)
#15190 - File Types page shows active option for WMA Lossless/Pro
#15196 - Multiple genre tags in ID3v2 not read properly

Click Apply-

Report back if this helps.

P.S. Squeezebox Server has to be set up for iTunes for this to work,
but it's not that difficult to set up. You can simply copy your
Library.XML into the NAS and point Squeezebox Server at it, just make
sure that the media path matches the library path for the songs and it

[SlimDevices: Radio] Port Settings

I have had some problems but am figuring some of them out here on this

So my question is where do I change it? I am guessing it is in the

nice radio when it is working but I would say it has been a roller
coaster trying to get it to work. I get the Connection Reset by Remote

but when I switch from mysueezebox.com to my computer, my computer
