Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] zune

2010-05-24 Thread interspectrum

I'm surprised that some of you do not know how the zune system works.
The issue I am concerned about is not purchasing individual songs for
$0.99 or whatever. It is the music SUBSCRIPTION service that I need. I
pay $14.99 per month and can download or stream (I prefer to download
the tracks), and I can access a large amount of music. I know some of
you do not like this idea, but please see it from another point of
view. For those on a low income, it allows them to have access and
experience much more music then they could otherwise. Unlike services
like Pandora or Slacker, I can listen to whatever song I want when I
want, as long as it is in the library. This way I can still have legal
access to music at a cost I can afford. I can't do this with itunes or
any other non-drm'd service.

Hi Erland,

I've installed the Custom alarm window patch - seemingly successfully
(it shows as checked in the patch installer). However, I don't get a
When Alarm option under the Custom Clock Settings. I've rebooted a
couple of times, but no joy as yet. Any thoughts ?

Ah! You're looking for Logitech to have an App similar to the App they
have for Rhapsody.
I doubt that Microsoft would agree to this as it would cut into their
profits on sales of the zune, but who knows, maybe they would agree to
something like this.

Well, and option (but not a good one, as it is another $10/mo
subscription) is to take a look at Rhapsody:

No, we know precisely how Zune works, which is why we (and many others
based on Zune's low market share) avoid it. ;)

I use Napster at $5 per month which has a much larger library than Zune
and includes five song purchase downloads per month.
All purchased and included free song downloads are 256k and DRM free.

The subscription portion of such services, including Napster and Zune,
will include DRM as you are not purchasing the song, just renting it
per se from their library.

I have nothing against MicroSoft, I've only ever used Windows OS's.
But their management and restrictive policies of their music service is
horrible in comparison to other services out there that specialize in
music services and music downloads.

Just as I like some Sony products. But I'd never get wrangled into
their restrictive Sonic Stage music services and player preventing me
from using my legally purchased music on any non-Sony hardware or
software. :)

You can always file an enhancement request here to add Zune Music
Services.
But as they are such a small segment, not well thought of in streaming
circles, and are up against much better services like Rhapsody and
Napster and Deezer (already well embedded in SqueezeBox service
offerings) that it would likely not make sense for Logitech to fork
over licensing payments to MicroSoft for the very few users that would
choose Zune over the real players in the market. ;)

And this assumes MicroSoft would even allow such licensing, at all.

Just FYI for anyone who uses a Radio with SB Server: I downgraded to
7.4.2, re-enabled sync with mysqueezebox.com and everything works
great.

It's shocking how great the Radio is and how terrible the alarm
functionality is.

It makes me think there's a fundamental design flaw here in what should
be a brain-dead-simple function. Take out all the talk about no battery
backup and the rest and you still have the fundamentals that the alarms
don't work correctly and the UI on the Radio to set and manage them is
plain dumb.

Based on your experience do you think the problem is mostly mysb.com?
If mysb.com issues were fixed would that make your radio usable and
make you relatively happy? It seems that mysb.com is the primary
culprit in a number problems. I would be upset to if I bought the radio
to use reliably with mysb.com and was unable to reliably do so.

Personally, I never use mysb.com directly. Server is always on so I
always use the server and access myapps via the server interface.

I guess what I am trying to figure out is this a matter of a lot of
different issues or one main culprit (mysb.com) causing the majority of
the problems radio users are having.

Filing bug reports would be crucial at this point. (that is is the user
is not so fed up to return the radio or bash it with a hammer)

[SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox Radio in the bathroom

2010-05-24 Thread lgrant98001

Has anyone tried using a Squeezebox Radio as a bathroom radio. I am
thinking of putting it on the shelf (an extension of the vanity) on the
other side of my 6x7-foot bathroom from the bathtub. I am wondering if
the humidity when I take a shower is going to be too much for it. I
have friends with radios in their bathrooms, and they do OK, but I'm
wondering if the Radio would be more sensitive to humidity.

Has anyone tried this?

Thanks,

Lynn

Thank you 0xdeadbeef. :)

I gave up on trying to log a bug when it was reported that users had to
vote on bugs for them to be fixed. As I've said before, fixing bugs
shouldn't be like a democracy - the radio does NOT work as advertised.

I have called Logitech support on numerous occasions. They have
blamed everything on my end and have not acknowledged any issues with
the SBR. Funny though, all my other internet devices work fine.

If MySB is the problem then they need to fix it and let their customers
know there is an issue they are working on instead of burying their
heads in the sand.

Logitech DOES NOT CARE about their SBR customers. Period. Generally,
actions speak louder than words but in this case we aren't even getting
the words.

Thank god today was a holiday because the alarm didn't fire AT ALL. My
wife is so fed up with the gift (I was the dummy who bought it) that we
are going back to old reliable - a $15 clock radio that reliably plays
both AM and FM reliably. Can you image that Logitech??

I'm sure I've read of others using it in the bathroom just fine before.

The designers would never give an official recommendation because it
wasn't designed -specifically- for that use and only basic
environmental testing was carried out (if any). However, I think some
unofficial comments have stated that it should preform just fine and be
just as good as other regular speakers in the same area if not better.

From a customer's perspective it's hard to tell which parts of the
current issues are caused by bad system design, bad software
implementation on the radio and bad server setup. Probably an unhealthy
mixture of all three points. Then again, as a customer I don't have to
care: the Radio is advertised to work without a local server and in the
6 or 7 months I owned it, it hardly ever did.

brucegrr;550230 Wrote:

The problem we're having is one of bad management, too few people with
too little experience working on too many different projects and
failing completely. It's not like the issues started with the 7.5.0
update. Most of the issues exist since the release of the Radio and
they were already reported back then. In 6 months, it should be
possible to hire some people who are actually capable of fixing the
design/implementation/setup issues. Instead they decided to tinker with
them alongside the Touch development. Bad decision.

brucegrr;550230 Wrote:

Filing bug reports is a complete waste of time. Been there, did this.
In all the years that I filed bug reports, I hardly ever saw a positive
outcome. Usually bugs are defined as solved without solving them or they
are made duplicates of (more or less) unrelated bugs and then closed
etc. Every now and then I still get some automatic feedback on some
bugs I filed years ago for the SB classic, but since my original report
was merged/marked as duplicate, it's usually hard to tell what the heck
this message has to do with my original report. Usually nothing.
All the reports I filed last year for the Radio were
closed/merged/ignored as well, so why do you think that filing new bug
reports over and over again would change the minds of the Logitech
folks who obviously decided to simply ignore all the known and obvious
issues with the Radio?
