WPA2 support exists for the PSK variant (password) but certainly not for
Enterprise. you would have to use a WiFi-to-Ethernet bridge capable of
WPA2-Enterprise, and connect the Radio to it via Ethernet. Even then the
outcome is not clear. if it's a company network, isn't there a guest
SSID that you could use and that is less protected?

Hi there, no problem. Hope this works without photos?
You will need a spudger or a guitar pick, a TX7 screwdriver, TX10 if you
want to get to the speakers, and a PH1 (Phillips) if you want to access
the PCB's front side

- the speaker grille is held by four plastic noses, one in each
corner, which plug into the front
- insert the spudger's edge between the fabric and the surrounding
edge in any of the three sides of the speaker grille that do not go
  towards the display
- near the edge, use the spudger to loosen the plug connection
carefully. If need be, just lever it out a bit, not entirely, and
continue with the next corner, doing multiple rounds until the grille
  is free
- you will see two silver TX7 screws in the middle of the front panel
which hold down the clear plastic of the right half. Loosen both
- once the screws are out, push the right front panel half about 1-2
millimeters to the left. Subtle force is required here. You should see
the headphone connector move in. It is what holds the assembly. Once
the front panel is far enough to the left, you will be able to pull it
out. You will find two cables attached, one going to the speaker (4
wires) and one towards the power jack (2 wires)
- if you need to go any further from here, e.g. separate the PCB from
the case completely, unplug both connectors
- *for full PCB access: *the PCB is bolted to the front panel with 8
or 9 smaller PH1 screws. If you undo all of them, and pull the knobs
of the main rotary knob and the volume knob, the PCB should be free by
now. Take care as the buttons, especially the ones for the presets
1..6 will easily fall out of the front panel, and so do the
rubber/carbon coated mattes between the PCB and the buttons. Be sure
not to lose anything, and remember how everything was placed so you
  can properly reassemble later
- *in case you need to access the speakers*, you will find 6 TX10
screws deep down in the black plastic insert of the front panel, four
in each corner, and two more in the top and bottom center. Undo these
so you can pull the insert out and access the speakers which are
  mounted to it

That should do it. If you have any problems, please post them here with
photos describing the issue(s).
Good luck!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox Radio Keeps Disconnecting from Wifi - Possibly failing wifi card?

2020-06-20 Thread JoeMuc2009

The SB radio does not have a dedicated Wi-Fi board. Like the Touch and
unlike previous models, the Wi-Fi chip is soldered to the radio's main
board. I have one here that won't connect wirelessly at all whereas all
other functionality is fine.
The chip is not easily replaced, I think it might even be a BGA soldered
chip which leaves it to high experts and gurus to replace successfully.
Sorry man but it's probably not coming back. You might help yourself
with an external Wi-Fi to Ethernet bridge because that will probably
keep working.
If you actually want to open the Radio, I can give you some
instructions. Chances are very very slim though that this gets you
anywhere.
Cheers
Joe

by the way, this line suggests your LMS does not have logon data for

Is that deliberately so? I would not vow this helps but it still might
help. Updating LMS is also a good idea.

oh yeah, that looks like someone is attempting to break in. Better close
the inbound IP ports towards your LMS if possible. It's really hazardous
to keep these ports open. Shutting them off will still allow you to
control your devices from your internal Wi-Fi and ethernet, but not from
outside your network.

Simple, just click -settings- in the bottom-right corner of what you see
when connected to your LMS in a browser (http://:9000), then go
to the rightmost tab -Information-, scroll all the way down until you
see some hyperlinks for Logitech Media Server log files and Scanner log
files. The former are interesting, the scanner logs not so much. You can
choose whether you wish to see only the most recent 100, 500, or 1000
lines, or everything. 100 lines should suffice if you get to look at the
log close to the moment of failure. Refreshing the browser with
will update the log display when needed.

Hi there,

as far as I'm aware you can use just any Squeezebox remote control with
any Squeezebox model. They all share the same infrared codes and are
only differentiated by the amount of buttons.
I can safely confirm that a numeric keypad is offered on the remote
controls for SB Classic (SB2 and SB3), SB Touch, Transporter. Usually,
the universal Logitech Harmony remote control models support the
infrared codes for Squeezeboxes, too.

Cheers,

[SlimDevices: Radio] Battery Compartment Mxstery

2019-07-07 Thread JoeMuc2009

Hi all,

in the course of a recent RepairCafé UE Radio repair, I found heavy
corrosion in the battery compartment that happened because the Radio was
forgotten outside and ended up in a puddle of water after a rainy night.
I found an interesting extra bit of circuitry that also exists in my own
Radio. It is so odd that I would like to share it here. Maybe someone
has an idea what all this is good for.
Apparently, there are Radio models that do not have this extra circuitry
which makes me wonder even more why the effort.
After unscrewing the battery compartment door of my UE Smart Radio, this
is what I have on the inside of the door:

[image: https://jf-it-services.de/public/slimdevices/radio/cover1.jpg]

[image: https://jf-it-services.de/public/slimdevices/radio/cover2.jpg]

So there's a 10-pin contact header at the end of the small (5-wire)
cable which is supposed to go into the device's battery jack here:

[image:
https://jf-it-services.de/public/slimdevices/radio/dev_contact.jpg]

And the battery is then supposed to be plugged into the jack that is in
the door, shown next:

[image: https://jf-it-services.de/public/slimdevices/radio/cover3.jpg]

Of course, I was curious about what is happening here as the battery
could be connected to the device right away, having the correct form,
keying, and pinout of the connector. So why this diversion?
So let's undo the two PH1 screws which are near the strain relief of the
wires:

[image:
https://jf-it-services.de/public/slimdevices/radio/cover_inside1.jpg]

Hmm, so the black and white wires are directly soldered to the board
apparently whereas the other three are routed differently. In the bottom
left of the flipped-around module, a PH0 screw needs to be removed in
order to release the PCB.
What I found then is so inexplicably cumbersome: the red, brown, and
cyan wires go to gold-plated pads on a very small separate PCB inside
the housing. From there, three spring contacts on the other (larger)
board connect them to the 10-pin jack.
But the craziest thing for me is that there is no change in the final
pinout. Pin 1 of the plug on one end is pin 1 on the jack at the other
end. It's basically just a small 1:1 extension cord.

[image:
https://jf-it-services.de/public/slimdevices/radio/cover_inside3.jpg]

The spring contacts are what failed in the patient that I had on the
table in the RepairCafé. As a result, one of the spring contacts was
completely gone due to corrosion, and the Radio indicated a broken
battery and would not charge any longer, not even a brand-new after
market (not original) battery that the owner bought under the assumption
that it's just an aged battery that caused the issues.
Sorry I have not taken a better picture but you'll get the idea:

[image:
https://jf-it-services.de/public/slimdevices/radio/corrosion.jpg]

Luckily, this unit didn't blow up like many Radios apparently do by
themselves, it still works fine on external power, and after removing
all of this extra stuff, also works on both batteries, old and new.

Which raises several questions:

- why was this re-routing brought in at all? What's it good for? The
battery could just as well be connected directly to the Radio battery
port that is exposed in the compartment
- how come they decided to connect two out of five wires directly to
the target PCB, and route three of them across spring contacts on a
  separate mini PCB?
- there's not a single component between both ends besides a variety
of contacts. If a fuse was in there, or some sort of battery charge
monitoring / protection, it would make a lot more sense
- a lot of Radios do not have this extra circuitry at all - does it
make a difference? It this an afterthought, and was more functionality
actually planned to be implemented in this place?
- humidity ingress will definitely do harm to the spring contacts
sooner or later. This feels wrong as the Radio was designed to be
carried around and also be placed outside, with a higher risk of
exposure to water, cocktails or whatever
- is this thing involved in the failure of Q3 and other components on
the main board that so many Radios suffer from?

Please consider this just a side conversation, it's nothing of any
importance, just wondering. Maybe you Radio owners can take a look into
your Radio's battery compartment to see whether this applies to your
Radio as well. We might find out what the Radios with this special have
in common otherwise. Just out of curiosity.

Have a nice day!

Cheers,
Joe

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Squeezebox Radio - Inverted display

2018-09-24 Thread JoeMuc2009

Well, it's not exactly about the Radio but I had the very same with the
Squeezebox Controller today. My controller failed to stay connected for
some days now so I decided to move its working display into another
controller that I had in my spare box and whose display has failed years
ago. So I connected the display to the spare controller, only to find
the display is showing everything upside down, including the boot logo.
This would not recover by firmware upgrade and factory reset.
I then changed plans and connected the display back to the Controller
that I have been using for years now. The vertical flip was gone. Then
swapped the Wi-Fi daughter board with the spare unit, and, tada, the
whole thing is back working.
So it's probably not the display that causes the vertical flip but
rather the board to which it is connected. No idea how that is caused
though...

Sorry, didn't help. The 'Check Network' step just complains that no
Ethernet connection is available. Basically I can't seem to get the
device out of wired mode because I cannot successfully connect any WiFi
network. So whenever I try, it fails, and the Radio stays in demand of a
wired connection.
After a reset to factory defaults, the process to set up the Radio
cannot be completed far enough to get to the main menu. I have to either
choose wired connection (and also attach a wire of course), or try to
scan for WiFi connections which is the exact thing that fails with this
device. So I cannot get out of that phase of the setup. Once I choose
Ethernet, all the repair mechanisms care about is also the Ethernet
connection apparently.
As WiFi-to-Ethernet gateways are below 10 USD nowadays, that might be a
way out. The downside is that another power supply is needed then.
Portability is no longer a thing with this baby.

That's how it should look. I don't know much about how to diagnose

[SlimDevices: Radio] Dead WiFi on SB Radio

2017-11-04 Thread JoeMuc2009

Hi all,

does anybody know this? My Squeezebox Radio (bought on eBay as fully
defective) refuses to do anything WiFi-related. It registers with
Ethernet, no problem, it plays well, something appears to be wrong about
WiFi though. Attempted factory and Xilinx resets, both to no avail.
My observations so far:

- switching to WiFi will immediately abort the scan for available
networks (if it happens at all), and show that no networks could be
found, although every WiFi other device is giving me 3 to 5 networks,
two of which are my own. One access point is sitting less than one
  meter from the SBR
- WiFi status info shows everything unset, and the WiFi symbol in the
bottom right corner stays red all the time
- entering valid WiFi information for the desired network ends in the
SBR not being able to connect to it (takes ~ 30 seconds to find that
  out)

If the WiFi chip in the Radio were defective, I would assume that the
scan would still take a while to return without success, or the entire
device crashing during hardware access to the WiFi chip. It seems more
as if there is a driver issue and the SBR does not even attempt to make
use of the WiFi hardware at all. There are no error codes being shown or
anything else happening that points out anything unusual. I'm clueless.

Regards and thank you all in advance! :)
Joe

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Replace Radio screen

2017-11-04 Thread JoeMuc2009

Okay, it's harder than i thought, sorry. The display does not show an
evident model number or even manufacturer. The display module is glued
into a plastic frame that covers its entire backside and most of the
connector. I am afraid that digging into it will destroy something.
Would be a shame as the display is fully functional.
But what I found is that the Logitech G19 keyboard apparently uses the
same display. So the cheapest way out might be acquiring one of them and
extracting the LCD from it as described here:

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Replace Radio screen

2017-11-03 Thread JoeMuc2009

Hi Philippe,

sorry, missed your post until now. I will have a Radio here tomorrow and
will check what model the display is. In the Squeezebox Controller I
know it's an Evervision display that is no longer available or being
manufactured. I spoke with one of their sales rep and it looks pretty
hopeless. Also no data sheet so no chance to find anything else
compatible. Another advantage of the beloved Noritake VFD displays...
There might be a similar problem in the Radio, we'll see.

If a line is white, it could also be a bad contact in the edge area of
the display which could be resolved by applying a little more pressure
there. You may want to try giving the display edges (the ones orthogonal
to the white line) a gentle manual pressure and find out whether the
line recovers. You will have to run the device open for this test of
course. Not really a challenge for you, right? [emoji6]

Regards
Joe
