Nothing that uses WMA is perfect.
Due to the way MS is licensing this codec, WMA is a mess and to be

Huh? :) I personally have never had any issues with using copy

Napster. I don't seem to have any issues with Zune either. It
actually works pretty darn nice on my mango based phone. So that's
news to me. Not sure why I would have to avoid it.

Try any iOS App except for Napster, for example. I assume Napster eats
the hefty license fee (or has some gross license anyway).

Microsoft's license fees for WMA are ridiculous and al the free codecs
(OK, I only know about one anyway) are GPL'ed.

WMA _with_ DRM will not even work on your Squeezebox.

Albeit.. it DOES work on both Mac and Linux PCs (without DRM), it's the

Try WMA on Android...

Well, I thought the plan was not to shut down the zune services, but
probably a 'rebranding' since the Zune players have been eol'ed. First
step is to migrate the service to the Windows Phone 7.5 App Store,
after that integration with Windows App Store (Windows 8). So it
depends on the succes of the Nokia/Microsft deal, I guess.

My Napster subscription membership was recently dumped to Rhapsody.
Since Zune offers a super nice user interface, 192kbps WMA files, tight
integration to Win8/Mango OS), I switched in a heartbeat.

Zune is basically perfect; however, the only thing missing is a
Squeezebox Server plugin. Is there a way to playback Zune music
channels yet? I'm sure there will be a plugin by the time Win8 is
available; with the integration of Zune Marketplace, however, I was
hoping to have support for it now.

I too would love to see some sort of Zune Pass integration. Currently
I'm using the wavinput plug-in to capture and stream, but it's not
super ideal as you need to initiate playback from the PC and you don't
get songnames/coverart.

As far as I can tell the server needs to be able to read the licences.
At the moment only WMP, WMC or the actual Zune software will open the
files.

With Squeezebox the DRM secret handshakes occur in the player
firmware. That's because the server software is open source, but the
player firmware is closed. Rhapsody, Napster (and Microsoft and Apple,
if it ever came to pass) don't want the secret code out in the open.

Ahh I see.

From trying XBMC and Muso just now they won't play the Zune files
either, so it kinda looks like I'm (we are) stuck with one of the MS
players and the wavin plug-in for now. Realistically I should just be
grateful I've got that option thanks to bpa et al.

Would be awesome if the Squeeze developers would be able to include the
secret handshake in the firmware, but MS being MS and record companies
being record companies it seems unlikely.

I'm surprised that some of you do not know how the zune system works.
The issue I am concerned about is not purchasing individual songs for
$0.99 or whatever. It is the music SUBSCRIPTION service that I need. I
pay $14.99 per month and can download or stream (I prefer to download
the tracks), and I can access a large amount of music. I know some of
you do not like this idea, but please see it from another point of
view. For those on a low income, it allows them to have access and
experience much more music then they could otherwise. Unlike services
like Pandora or Slacker, I can listen to whatever song I want when I
want, as long as it is in the library. This way I can still have legal
access to music at a cost I can afford. I can't do this with itunes or
any other non-drm'd service.

Ah! You're looking for Logitech to have an App similar to the App they
have for Rhapsody.
I doubt that Microsoft would agree to this as it would cut into their
profits on sales of the zune, but who knows, maybe they would agree to
something like this.

Well, and option (but not a good one, as it is another $10/mo
subscription) is to take a look at Rhapsody:

No, we know precisely how Zune works, which is why we (and many others
based on Zune's low market share) avoid it. ;)

I use Napster at $5 per month which has a much larger library than Zune
and includes five song purchase downloads per month.
All purchased and included free song downloads are 256k and DRM free.

The subscription portion of such services, including Napster and Zune,
will include DRM as you are not purchasing the song, just renting it
per se from their library.

I have nothing against MicroSoft, I've only ever used Windows OS's.
But their management and restrictive policies of their music service is
horrible in comparison to other services out there that specialize in
music services and music downloads.

Just as I like some Sony products. But I'd never get wrangled into
their restrictive Sonic Stage music services and player preventing me
from using my legally purchased music on any non-Sony hardware or
software. :)

You can always file an enhancement request here to add Zune Music
Services.
But as they are such a small segment, not well thought of in streaming
circles, and are up against much better services like Rhapsody and
Napster and Deezer (already well embedded in SqueezeBox service
offerings) that it would likely not make sense for Logitech to fork
over licensing payments to MicroSoft for the very few users that would
choose Zune over the real players in the market. ;)

And this assumes MicroSoft would even allow such licensing, at all.

DRM has to be supported in the player firmware. In case of the the
players based on the ip3k chips the point is moot as they can not
accomodate any moore big changes even if logitech wanted (similar
things have been discussed in the past )
They can't even bring AAC to these players, they are full . And the
latest development is that they don't develop new functions for this
platform anymoore anyway, but in this case I think it is unfeasible for
technical reasons.

ip3k based players SB2 ,SB3 (aka SB classic) Transporter ,Boom ,
Receiver part of the duet .

That leaves Touch and Radio as possible candidates, this would then be
a business decision of some kind ?

Practical solutions .

The wave input plugin for squeezeboxserver ? you can then play the
files in WMP and then let the wave input plugin capture the audio ?

Can you wash these files in some way ? maybe the tedious way of
burning CD's and then rip them, you can reuse an rw disc for it
maybe..

download music you already paid for as backup copy .Microsoft has
historically abandoned other drm schemes leaving their customers in the
cold with useless files.
Using this kind of service is more like renting a movie than buying
music .

As has been suggested already, you can do this now!

Point Squeeze Server to *any* music on your computer or HDD or NAS and
your SB player will play it.

So just point Squeeze Server to your Zune library.

The only restrictions are those imposed by the source of the music
files, in this case Zune. If your purchased Zune music files are DRM
infected then you need to contact Zune and ask them why you cannot play
your purchased Zune music on non-Zune players.

Squeezeboxes. The DRM issues are on the APPLE and MICROSOFT end.
