Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm clock requires internet access

2010-07-12 Thread drumkey87

This is a great topic, I've always wondered how that works also. I
always wanted to know what would happen if my internet went out and I
had an alarm clock set up if it would just not go on or what but thats
good to know now that it does have a backup beep sound.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm clock requires internet access

2010-03-29 Thread Siduhe

I have found the Boom is best (at the moment) for alarm functionality.
As Mnyb says, there is a problem with some implementations of WOL and
the Radio at the moment, whereas the Boom works well with WOL (if
that's relevant to you). I also find the autodimming feature works
better on the Boom than on the Radio at the moment (but I'm running the
beta 7.5 software, so my experience may be different from someone
running the release version).

Thank you Siduhe and Mnyb for your detailed explanations!
Now I understand more how SB Radio works!

Ill think about it.. maybe an SB Radio or maybe a boom/classic/other
and a separate alarm clock. Ill also look into how the SB3 works in
this regard, since Ive never used the SB3's alarm..

It can work when the WOL bug (for radio ) is fixed, I do this with a
boom, but I use my server every day and turn it off at night, then WOL
(Wake On Lan) boot's my server every morning, and play music for me :)
"random song" Mozart or Metallica who knows ? But I do use it every day
otherwise the "next alarm" memory of the player would not work.

Must be a typical squeezebox persson I do use my squeezeboxes every
time I'm home, so I don't have to think about the alarm.

If I would listen to less music than I do, this strategy would fail.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm clock requires internet access

2010-03-29 Thread Siduhe

It may be relevant to you, because your usage pattern of internet/server
may alter whether the Radio is going to suit your requirements or not.
I think that's what bluegaspode was getting at.

The Radio is designed to be connected at all times to one of a) the
internet and/or b) a local server (whether PC, Mac or NAS).

There is a fallback mechanism for the alarm, but it's only designed as
a failsafe rather than for regular use.

If you have the server software running, but no internet access, then
an alarm sound which is a local music file will work as normal. If you
have an internet radio station set as your alarm, the fallback tone will
sound. However, the fallback tone will only work once, so you would
need to reconnect to the internet again for the next day's alarm to
work. You would also be limited to the fallback alarm sound - which is
a single beep. Some people find it too quiet, although it's worked for
me the few times I have needed to use it.

If you have no software running, then as long as the Radio is connected
to Mysqueezebox.com, and have selected a radio station or similar
(rather than a local file) the alarm should work as normal.

If you have no software and no internet, then you will only ever get
the fallback alarm - and again you would need to reconnect to the
internet/software again before any following alarms will work.

In short, there is a fall back mechanism which should ensure the alarm
will sound, but it's not designed for everyday use. The Radio is
designed to be connected to at least one of the internet or the server
software at all times.

Hope this helps.

It sounds as if you wont to leave your internet/NAS switched off

Everyday a fallback alarm is not nice ;)

I am asking about the Squeezebox Radio.
Before buying, I want to make sure that the clock and alarm will work

Otherwise I will use another device as alarm.

Didn't read the footer, and his posting is here in the Radio forum.
So could've been targeted to a Radio :)

Anyway - the boom beeps at least in that case.
Maybe SB3 do also output some sound ? Just test it - then you know.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm clock requires internet access

2010-03-28 Thread Mnyb

Sand has SB3's they do not have built in backup sound.

But on the other hand he have a local server, so using a local file on
the NAS should work if the NAS is running 24/7

Note that the local server must be running,an SB3 do not have rtc so it
cant' wol a server at time before an alarm if needed.

Given this an alarm set up on the slimserver on the NAS using local
files is a safe bet, you can play internet radio trough the NAS server
too.
But i don't know how it would function if internet is gone or the radio
station is down.

You should have a LAN.

Some isp's in Sweden have actually given their clients switches instead
of routers and are thus controlling their clients networks DHCP and
stuff, meaning that local PC's and things stops communicating with each
other when the internet is down ? incredibly nutty practice, you are
then also on a very big "lan" with thousands of other people, how
communication between your local stuff works in such a setting I don't
know (probably not at all, or very buggy, squeezeboxes for sure won't
like it) This is easily fixed by getting your own router.

If the internet is down for some reason there will be a fallback alarm,
playing a mp3 saved on the radio.
You should at least use version 7.4.2 of the firmware. Also after this
first alarm any subsequent alarm won't work (until the connection to
the squeezeboxserver is back again)
