Small tale: Atlantis parked on a busy main street connected to

window as would be thief reaches for the skinny cable, lifts the
seemingly flimsy lock to examine it. Sensor is activated, quiet
countdown beeps begin. Thief looks puzzled for 5 seconds, beep, beep,

I have used them on both my touring bike and on my commuting bike.
They are head and shoulders above the traditional flat mountain bars.
They worked great for me on long days in the saddle while touring and
I have recommended them to many friends getting into touring as a
great start to a mountain bike to touring bike conversion. Two friends
who have been on an around the world tour have used them exclusively
and love them. Also, they seem very popular in Europe. The shape is a
little awkward and takes some adjusting to get it right. I felt like
the bars dropped down where I wanted them to go up, and went up where
I wanted them go down (I feel the same way about moustache bars too).
To be honest, my biggest complaint is that I thought they were kinda
ugly. In the end I replaced them with Nitto Dove bars, which offer
almost all of the same hand positions, look better, bend in the right
directions, and, for me, are much more comfortable..I would recomend
the Dove bars over the trekking style bars, unless price is a concern.
The Doves are $30ish and treking style bars can be had for $15 from
Nashbar. I do have a set sitting around that you are more than welcome
to-- I am in Tucson-- so if it is worth the postage to you to try them
out, let me know. They have less than 50 miles on them.

 Cheers,
 cm

Sorry. I know that crosses the line for a lot of readers-of riv.

It shouldn't be anathema to recommend a ti bike to the OP, who is
looking for a fast bike. makes perfect sense.

It would also make sense to recommend that the bike not be set up with
the handlebars at saddle height.

In fact, it probably makes sense to just let go of the whole riv
velosophy, and get a bike that has more in common with a race bike
than an all-rounder, which is now essentially every bike in the Riv
line-up.

sounds like an IF crown jewel or club racer (in steel or ti) would be
perfect for the OP.

Couple years ago when I was on the IBob (is there an e-mail box big
enough to handle the volume?) I joined a one time group order for IBob
Jerseys from Portland Cyclewear. Truth is, I am not a jersey wearer.
I wound up wearing this about 3 or 4 times then relegated it to the
back of my closet (dry cleaned first). I was about to send it to the
Patagonia clothing recycling bin when it occurred to me someone here
might want it.

There is no size tag on it, but I am right between medium and large
and this fits well. It is medium blue with cream stripes and middle
panel. In the front there is an IBob logo in a oval that says
Bridgestone Owners Bunch on top, Cycling Lore Tradition on the
bottom, 19 on the right side, 94 on the left side.

UPS ground and envelope should come to about $8.00.

If interested, contact off group and I can send my paypal account.

Heading out for the next 7 hours or so. Will get back to anyone
tonight.

[RBW] Re: My New-To-Me Atlantis

2009-04-20 Thread Doug Peterson

Ken:

Thanks for the FD spec. I'll check that one out. Funny, on yesterdays So
Cal Riv ride, at least 3 guys were kicking themselves for not beating you to
that bike.

As to Riv doing a Silver FD, it'll probably be a long wait. I recall an
article where they say the FD is the least necessary component on the bike.
Something like if someone said give up a component or else the FD was the
one you'd miss least. So they don't have much interest there.

Enjoy the ride.

I think I owe most of the credit for the quick commitment to my VERY
understanding wife. I called her just after 6am as soon as I got to
work to make sure I did not have to back out of my commitment to buy
the bike. Furthermore, she understood just how badly that I wanted
it, enough to chase down the FedEx delivery man on Good Friday at the
FedEx terminal to PICK-UP the package because we had missed the
delivery! She's not interested in riding, so I think my next purchase
will have to be at the jewelry store ;)

I'm a self-admitted bag-matcher. (The first step to recovery is
admitting that one has a problem, right?) I thought about matching bar-
tape to the saddle, but the saddle is really reserved for another
upcoming project so I am simply using the honey for the time-being on
the Atlantis. I have a nicely aging honey B17 TI on my Rivendell All-
Rounder. Variety is the spice of life, so I thought that I might just
try something different.

The front deraileur is a FD-5504. Ideally, it would be adjusted
lower. FWIW, I think that the next Silver branded component should
be a front deraileur compatible with smaller front rings and low BB
drop! Talk about a niche product?!

Your front fender spacer looks really cool, nice work.  Do know which 105

work as well as I'd like with a 44T big ring.  This is with a Sugino

Black saddle?  H... maybe bar tape to match the honey?  Just a

If one of your other projects come thru and you need to sell this bike,

[RBW] Re: looking for a fast bike, where should I go.

2009-04-20 Thread Aaron Thomas

I haven't ridden the Independent Fab bike Patrick recommends, but I
can say that a dude on the club rides I go on has a non-lugged steel
IF and it looks pretty sweet (though for aesthetic reasons I am not
crazy about the straight blade forks). This dude's bike is equipped
with primarily silver alloy parts (except for carbon Record Ergo
shifters) and looks classic enough. And it is impressively light;
although I couldn't say just how much it weighs, it certainly feels
significantly lighter than my Romulus.

Patrick's other point about ditching Riv's velosophy in this
instance is interesting. Since I am lucky enough to have a Bleriot and
a Romulus, I have the Bleriot outfitted with a Mark's rack for
meandering, and I've tried to turn my Romulus into a go-fast bike
with lighter wheels, a racy ti-railed saddle and no luggage
whatsoever, save for a small tool kit under the saddle.

While the Romulus cooks pretty well in this guise with 25c Pro Race
tires, the one thing I keep butting up against is the body position
the bike seems to want to put me in. Far from the call to Raise
d'bars, I cannot seem to get the bars low enough! At least not
without putting a drastically shorter stem on.

At best, with my current stem, I can get the bars about level with the
saddle. Any lower and I feel much too stretched out. To get the bars
low enough to where I think I might like them, I'd have to swap a 9cm
stem for an 8 or even a 7! But I worry about how that might affect the
handling.

Has anyone else had this difficulty of not being able to get the bars
low enough?

We don't know suffering - there's a French couple touring the states that
posted a request for info over on the touring site about conditions between
Las Vegas and St. George, UT. THAT will involve suffering of a serious

Great group to ride with as always, and looking forward to our next

when we do that.

[RBW] Re: Riv Ride

2009-04-20 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hey Doug,
Sometimes you’re better off not knowing stuff!
Like the real temp!
Actually for me, this is vital. I get dehydrated really fast unless I am
actively trying to avoid it. I had an evaporative cooling vest with me
yesterday which saved me.
We re-filled at Cooks and hung out for quite a
while, some guys got food. Then we took the bike path (old El Toro) down to
Portola / Santa Margarita Pkwy, so if you were
headed up that’s probably where you missed us.I figured this was the case. I
thought for sure that this is where I'd find you guys.
 It actually seemed
cooler in MV than the canyon so if you saw 95 on SM Pkwy it was triple digits
back in the
canyon.I've always been amazed by this. Mid-80s in Ladera Ranch always seems
to be low- to mid-90s in RSM. The canyon did seem hotter, but I honestly was
too busy suffering up the climbs to tell. By the time I dropped back down
toward Dana Point, it seemed downright cold, but it was still 87 degrees.I wish
I would have found the group. It looks like it was a fun ride. Maybe next
time.Oh, about those handlebars. I think I might pass. I was thinking of using
and aerobar and yesterdays ride proved to me why I dislike them so much in the
first place. They take up space on the handlebars that I actually use for my
hands.Take care,Joe

Hi Doug,

We have a sick one at home. Not the same one. The other one. Anyway, I wasn't
able to make it to the start of the ride, but thought I'd try and find you
guys. I wanted to get in some hills so I headed out from my place and headed
over to Ortega Highway
and then up Antonio Parkway.
Man, it was windy going up Antonio! I went up to Santa Margarita Parkway (it
was 92
degrees when I got there. Geez!). I made a left and head up SM Pkwy toward El
Toro, figuring I might be able to find you on your route. I headed
up and up until I got to Cook's Corner, but not Riv group. I turned right and
headed back toward Rancho Santa Margarita via the canyon. Once I got back to SM
Pkwy it was 95
degrees! I headed back down Antonio. The wind had changed so I didn't have the
nice tailwind that I would have expected. I couldn't wait to get back down to
the coast. My head was beginning to hurt from dehydration. Close to 6o miles
total after a short out and back into San
Clemente. Not too shabby, but it would have been nice
to see you guys. I was even on the AHH.

Hope you ride went well. Sorry I missed it!

Patrick makes an important point. Bars, saddles and
pedals all work together. Your entire weight is supported on your butt,
two feet and two hands, and distributed among those 5 points. Toss in
medical constraints (back, knees, wrists, etc.) and it’s a multi-variate
challenge. Love my Noodles, Brooks, and Grip Kings (sounds like I been
hitting the kool aid!) but as well as they satisfy my needs, that combo may be
a torture rack for someone else. This is how we all wind up with a shop
full of bike parts after a few years cycling.

[RBW] Dreaming of the New Rivs

2009-04-20 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles

Hey All,

The Rivendell Dealer network got word today from RBW that the new
Hillborne frames and final edition of the Quickbeam are about a week

[RBW] Convert 10 speed to 9 speed? (Silver Bar End Shifter Content)

2009-04-20 Thread Zack

Hi All:

I am currently re-evaluating the shifting setup i have on my bike. I
have STI shimano 105 shifters, and a 10 speed casette.

I would like to begin using friction shifters, and asked at my LBS
about this, and they explained that friction shifting does not work
well with the 10 speed setup.

I want to move to bar-ends no matter what, as the STI's just don't
really suit me, and they suggested indexed bar ends.

Is converting the 10 speed to 9 speed as easy as swapping out the
casette?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Your Riv and the city: lock up tight or second bike?

2009-04-20 Thread Vic

I have one Zefal skewer on the front wheel and onguard u-lock on the
back through the triangle and wheel.

I still won't eave it locked up over night, but at least I can feel
comfortable while I go in a store for a few minutes.

Anyone else have experience with the lock 'n' roll? I'm wondering if
a thief could actually unscrew nut and remove the entire skewer to get
around quick release. I haven't been able to, but theres still that
nagging doubt :)

2009-04-20 Thread James Warren

Try the friction, and if it doesn't work, get Shimano 10-speed
bar-enders. I think the friction's worth a try if you're using bar-end
shifters. I remember being told that 9 wouldn't work in friction, but
with bar-ends I was fine.

If you have to sell the Silvers, you could probably do it on this list.

Yes, it's that easy. Better yet, go to 8sp, which works better than

[RBW] Re: Your Riv and the city: lock up tight or second bike?

2009-04-20 Thread Chicken Sandwich

My stable includes many more than 2 but only one of them gets taken to
town and locked up for long periods of time, my early 80s Nishiki.

Now, I have taken my Rivendell to UTexas football games but I lock it
up at a friend's tailgate and they always have someone around to make
sure that the LCD TV, generator, barbecue, etc are not stolen. I ask
them to keep an eye on my bike and they are happy to oblige. I lock
it up with a cable lock and head off to the game.

[RBW] Re: Has anyone seen these shoes

2009-04-20 Thread usuk2007

Those Dromarti shoes look very nice, but a bit pricey. Also I'm
strange in that I ride SPD on my right foot, but Riv style on my left
so I need a shoe with a recessed SPD cleat that is also ok riding
without the cleat. The Dromarti Sportive might work, but that hard
rubber sole with little surface area wouldn't be too good. So far the
best I've found are the Shimano MTB shoes like the MT30 etc. They have
a nice wide surface for a platform and a good recess for a cleat and
they can pass for sneakers and are good walking around town. But when
I saw the Exustar's I thought they looked might be perfect. Looks like
I'll have to buy a pair from the UK to see.

Actually, you could swap between 10, 9 and 8 without much fuss at all. They
are all on the same freehub. Just swap cassettes, check your chain length
and watch your limit stops on the derailleur.

You might check the archive, 'cuz we were just talking about various tricks
to make that work.

These things help me:
Most of the newer cassettes are designed to shift, and the newer derailleurs
have floating upper pulleys, which are designed to help. If the last
friction shifting you did was with older, straight-toothed sprockets, you'll
find that rather than overshifting and trimming, doesn't work as effectively
as teasing it into gear.

At best, with my current stem, I can get the bars about level with the

Has anyone else had this difficulty of not being able to get the bars

It actually sounds like you can get them low enough, but then the reach is
longer. This isn't anything more than physics. Or, the recipricol of
Raise Dat Stem - you drop the bars in relation to the saddle, and you
effectively lengthen the reach.

I've had to trim the bottom of my technomic (?) stem quills to get
there. But my headtubes, due to frame size are only 110mm at best.

I guess I could go for a normal length quill next time.

[RBW] May SoCal Rivendell Bicycle Appreciation Society Ride

2009-04-20 Thread David Estes
I just started a discussion on the flickr
page.http://www.flickr.com/groups/socal_rivendell_bicycle_appreciation_society/discuss/72157617023666267/(and
here:

35 miles out of Redlands, maybe about 1/2 on dirt. Plenty of elevation, but
only one portion is steep (trust me, you've seen how I climb...).

Love to get some folks out and enjoying the great out doors!

Discussion here or on flickr is fine. Big decision is finding the date
which impacts the fewest...

FYI, we're also thinking a June S24O to Crystal Cove and an early July ride
in San Diego.
