[RBW] Re: Query Concerning Chain Problem
Similar thing happened to one of my touring buds a couple of weeks ago. It was a 9 speed and he's a big guy who pounds the pedals. First time was on a climb and he was able to take out the offending link to get going. Later in the same ride it started making noise on a flat section and he found one of the outer plates hanging loose, just waiting to fall off. As far as I know, he just replaced the chain and did not find any obvious cause. I've never had a chain fail but have seen it happen, usually older bikes that have been neglected. Never on one such as your son has. dougP -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of GeorgeS Sent: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 8:03 PM To: RBW Owners Bunch Subject: [RBW] Query Concerning Chain Problem My son has a Romulus he purchased about six months ago. Several weeks ago he was out on a long ride and his chain broke. I have been riding bikes a long time and I've never had a chain actually break in use and I've never known anyone who has had that happen. He said that on examination the outside plate simply peeled back at several places and separated from the pin. That left the inner plate holding the chain together and then that went. He said he did not hear any noise until shortly before the chain broke and it was obviously the plates hitting the RD cage. He took the bike back to the bike store where he bought it and they said they had never seen such a thing and put it off to a defective chain which they replaced and sent him on his way. On Sunday the same problem started to happen. After about 30 miles he said he started to see the plate on the outside start peeling back at three points on the chain. This time he was able to get back to the car before the chain broke. The bike store kept the bike to show to their ace mechanic and my son is supposed to pick it up later in the week. Yup. There are now photos of three (that's right, 3) more built up bikes. Arrgh! I'm excited and frustrated at the same time. Excited because this will be my first home build of a bike since purchasing a Stumpjumper frame in 1984 and building it up with parts from my other bike. Also excited because this will be my first bike with drops in a year. And really believe this one will be special. Frustrated because now I'm seeing photos of other builds and it makes me realize what I'm planning is not going to be that unique. Also am now second-guessing some choices. (i.e. should I now go with the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires instead of Pasela 35s?) Still, am glad to see there are at least some out there. [RBW] Re: Query Concerning Chain Problem
I have had a fair number of chains break for one reason or another over the years. Most were due to not using the right pin for the shimano chains when they went to the special pins. I try to avoid using the special pin chains and use the masterlink types almost exclusively, thus this failure never happens anymore to me. At least one was broken due to particularly inelegant shifts that have actually bent the chain and caused a plate to come off a pin. Also having a single speed chain derail when you take a power stroke can put a kink in it, probably leading to a bent or broken chain. I had this one happen a few weeks ago: http://tsaleh.blogspot.com/2009/03/never-done-this-before.html I am guessing this was a minorly tweaked chain from a derailment that failed in fatigue over time. I have had things like that happen before on my single speed mountain bike and cross bike which caused the chain to separate completely with bits of broken in half plates attached to the chain. Sometimes it looks like the crack started on a logo stamped on the plate. This one I rode home, before I figured it out what was going on, it was obviously bent, but I did not realize it was separated until I got hoime. Kind of neat. I think breaking or bending chains is fairly common. I am always surprised when people say they have never heard of it happening. Mostly due to installation error at some point, but you see all sorts of things when you ride lots of different bikes over lots of different conditions, and when you work at a shop that look to be due to defects in the plates, or maybe hitting something big or inelegant shifting under load. My favorite one was when I was on a group ride in the rain and a buddies chain came off and slid a few feet and neatly disappeared into a gutter. He took the BART home from that ride. Anyhow, it happens. Make sure you install it correctly and make sure you replace bent chains before they crack/depin. [RBW] To Sell Or Not To Sell With DirtDrops?
Hi--as some people will note, I've had various degrees of, should I sell it or not when contemplating my old Waterford 1400 Mountain Bike...and now, because of storage limitations, I'm going to sell it. Finally! I'm going to put it on eBay next week once I get it back to the old Rivendell set up, and I'd like some opinions on the handlebars: should I offer it with the Nitto DirtDrops it now has, or put another bar on it and sell the DirtDrops separately? I'm going to start the bidding at $575, and hopefully I'll get a little more than that, but that was with the Nitto bars. Would putting another set of bars decrease its value more than what I could get for the DD's? Or, what I think I'm getting at is: if I put non-drop bars on it, would more people consider buying the bike on eBay?) Obviously, I've agonized over this, but I can't really justify having two bikes at this time (our new Quickbeams are here, and we'll be picking them up next week.) If the general consensus is for me to replace the DD's, any suggestions for the new bar? I considered a Mustache bar, but to me that's the same sort of issue--too many people won't get it. I am sitting at a caff (as the Brits call them) in the middle of a 20 mile off road ride, of which, by the time I get home, some 12 to 14 miles will have been over sand, 1 to 3 inches deep. One experimental out-and-back of jeep track, 4 miles total, of which 3 at least were one to three inches deep in sand, I managed at 10 to 12 1/2 mph without having to stand and exerting myself no more, in this 64 gear, than I would climbing a steepish hill, seated, in the same gear. The big (29 1/2 inch diameter) and 65 mm wide (on the 44 mm rims; the tires measured only 55 on the earlier, 24 mm rims) tires definitely float over sand better than anhy 26 wheel, even with the same tire, and, I judge cautiously, they do better than the same tires at the same (20/30) pressures on the narrower rims. At these pressures the tires roll well on pavement, too. Now I need a better frame to go with the better wheels! -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM Professional Resumes. A, tempting me again I'd sell it w/out the DD's. Not so much to get rich, but knowing someone out there might really want them (I have three sets myself) but not want the whole bike. I should yank this post back On Topic by saying that I was thinking, as I rode just now, if I could ever think of getting another Custom -- say, a modified Bombadil -- on which to put these wheels, and by which to get more of that Rivendell Ride that I've come to know and love. We'll see. (The frame would have to accomodate 65 mm X 29 1/2 wheels with fenders and room to spare, while minimizing (not necessarily removing) TCO, and giving a more Riv Road ride, and yet have adequate standover with said big wheels. The Monocog 29er does all except give the ride that I want. [RBW] Bottom bracket and the Bleriot
I have a 110mm bottom bracket and am wondering whether it will work with the Sugino XD2 triple on the Bleriot. Or does it require a 113? In the crankset description on RBW, it says: On road bikes with straight (normal) chain stays, mount it on a 107 to 110mm bb. If your bike has bowed-out chain stays like most mountain bikes, it'll need a 113mm. http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/cranks_bottom_brackets#product=12-190 So should I treat the Bleriot as a road bike with straight (normal) chain stays or are the stays considered to be bowed-out like most mountain bikes? Can I get away with the 110 I already own or should I cough up cash for a new 113? I'm planning on swapping between Albatross bars and Noodles on my Protovelo, and four little pieces of metal would make it a lot easier. One time on a camping trip, my (the young teenaged) daughter tried to force a shift too late on a steep little pitch and bent a chain link. She was pretty upset and thought she'd be walking back to camp. I calmed her down, pulled out a chain tool, took out the bad link and we were on our way in a few minutes. I can't recall ever having broken a chain myself. I'm probably doomed now! Bill On Apr 28, 8:03 pm, GeorgeS chobur...@gmail.com wrote: My son has a Romulus he purchased about six months ago. Anyone ever heard anything like this? The cranks are Sugino and the derailliers are 105's. He is riding on good roads in Maryland right out of DC. [RBW] Orr Springs Road, Mendocino County
At the suggestion of another member of this list, I headed out Orr Springs Road from the city of Ukiah tonight. I didn't have time to get too far, but I made it about 12 miles from town--a long climb that included (according to the signs) 4 miles of 10% grade. [RBW] Re: Bottom bracket and the Bleriot
I just got finished building my Bleriot. I installed a Sugino 48/34 double on a 110 bb. When the chain was crossed from small ring in front to small cog in rear, the chain would rub on the inside of the large front ring. I know you should not do cross chaining, but that was the case with this installation. I installed a 110 bb and the rubbing went away due to improved chain line. Now I know you are talking about a triple crank, not a double so your experience will be different. Thought you might want to mix this data into your decision making. Regardless, love my newly built Bleriot. Maybe the most cost effective Riv ever made...ever again. On Apr 29, 4:26 pm, Aaron Thomas aaron.a.tho...@gmail.com wrote: I have a 110mm bottom bracket and am wondering whether it will work with the Sugino XD2 triple on the Bleriot. Or does it require a 113? In the crankset description on RBW, it says: On road bikes with straight (normal) chain stays, mount it on a 107 to 110mm bb. If your bike has bowed-out chain stays like most mountain bikes, it'll need a 113mm. http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/cranks_bottom_brackets#product=1... So should I treat the Bleriot as a road bike with straight (normal) chain stays or are the stays considered to be bowed-out like most mountain bikes? Can I get away with the 110 I already own or should I cough up cash for a new 113? [RBW] Re: To Sell Or Not To Sell With DirtDrops?
Thanks John: The problem I see with selling the parts off separately is the real fear of being stuck with a frame that no one will want, and I won't have room for; to that end, I'm going to have to sell the bike as is-- except for the handlebars (unless I think they'll help me sell it!) eBay hasn't been too bad, but I'd much rather sell the bike via a local Craigslist--but I didn't get any nibbles when I last posted the Waterford there...maybe I'll try again before selling it on eBay. I'll post pics after I put the bike back together on Saturday--and thanks for everyone's input. Not so much to get rich, but knowing someone out there might really want them (I have three sets myself) but not want the whole bike. DE I agree with David. Actually, you've got a lot of nice bits on there. If you're really trying to maximize cash in pocket, a lot of that stuff will bring more as individual pieces than they will on the bike. That assumes you have the stomach for ebaying all that stuff. I used to, but I don't anymore. The dirtdrops aren't the only interesting bits on that bike. I assume the Ritchey Microdrive is a 94/58 bcd crankset or is it the 86? Those make great doubles (think 45/28 coupled with a 12-28 in the rear) and are hard to find these days. I'd buy it if you stripped it off. Any SIS 8-spd is getting harder to find, so the shifters may be interesting to some. The UN-71 isn't made anymore. Only the heavier 5x. If there's life left in that, you could sell it easily. King headset, fancy hubs, the older xt derailleurs, 986 brakes: jsut good stuff to have around in your parts bin or easy enough to unload for reasonable prices. I bet if you stripped this bike down you could make more and likely sell off a bunch of this stuff on the RBW or BOB list pretty easily. And you wouldn't have to deal with ebay. -- John Speare Spokane, WA USAhttp://cyclingspokane.blogspot.com/ --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
