Also own bags from both companies. And do remember it was covered
extensively on this list a few years ago. (About the time both Bill
and myself each found the box of bags in the store at Duluth Pack.)

Do want to mention that the current Duluth Pack bags appear to be made
from their regular cloth. Not waxed canvas. More like the Carradice
canvas.

Also, like others, was a bit surprised to see the Hobo bag used as a
saddlebag. Can see how it might work.

[RBW] Roadeo vs. 1988 Huffy

2010-05-18 Thread Will
Did you see this May 17 Cycling News article about Andy Hampsten's
lugged-steel frame that he rode to victory in the 1988 Giro d'Italia?

www.cyclingnews.com/features/historic-pro-bike-andy-hampstens-1988-7-eleven-huffy-giro-ditalia

I was struck by the similarities among design criteria for a 1988 race
bike and the Riv Roadeo (with the exception of perhaps fender
clearance). It weighed 19.7 lbs without pedals. And I love this
quote: 'The year after '88 we had Eddy Merckx as our bike
supplier,' [Hampsten] continued. 'He is the master at fitting bikes to
riders and taught us not to get hung up on light bikes. Why save
seconds on a climb and lose minutes on a descent? [John] Slawta
certainly has an old world style of making bikes that go up and
downhill properly.'

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis - Bombadil comparison

2010-05-18 Thread Rene Sterental
Doug,

I was actually interested in the comparison of a 60 Bombadil with a 61
Atlantis. I know how stout the Bombadil is, I own a 60. However, I'm getting
more and more concerned with the standover height, which is very there for
me as well as the fact that I'm unable to bring the Noodle bars any closer
due to the top tube length. My 61 AHH fits perfectly and the 61 Atlantis is
pretty much identical with even slightly more standover clearance. That's
why I started considering the 61 Atlantis.

At this time, I don't want to go to a 56 Bombadil because it would require
getting the 650B wheelset (I have 2 36 spoked 700c Rich built wheelsets and
2 32 spoked lighter wheelsets that I use on the AHH). I also don't really
like the way the Hunqa is going, with its diagonal second tube and its grey
paint. I could change my mind as I explore these options, but for now, I'm
just interested in what switching to the 61 Atlantis would mean. Not even
sure I'm going to do it... just reassessing my options.

I'm ultimately more concerned with the standover height than I am with the

2010-05-18 Thread jamison brosseau
I actually got my 63cm hilsen, and i have just over an inch of space,
the top tube fits perfectly. I really think a 61 would have been too
small for me, and would have been close to not being able to get my
bars higher than my saddle. my saddle height is right at 79, i'm not
too worried about the 60cm bombadil, most of the time i will have one
foot on the peddle when i stop, and that gives me even more room.
its funny that i was so worried about the size at the time, i remeber
as a kid riding my dads schwinn world tour that was way too big for
me, i rode it off road, on mountain biking trails, and did small dirt
jumps with it . i wasn't even tall enough to sit on the saddle. had
to stand the whole time. never hurt myself once, until i tried to
drop in with it on tom jone's half pipe. any how i wouldn't ride a
bike that big now, but i had fun didn't get hurt.
i guess two extra centimeters doesn't meen too much to me.

My saddle height on both bikes is set at 76.5cm; with your saddle height I
do agree that standover with the 60 Bombadil should not be an issue. I
haven't hurt myself, but I always get very conscious of the top tube height
when straddling the bike, especially if wearing sandals... :-)

I don't quite feel atracted to the Hunqa... can't really say why... if I
ended up swapping frames, I think I'd be more comfortable with the Atlantis.
It's a bike that is somehow growing on me after my intial reaction of
rejection during my pre-Riv days... :-)

I do love my Bombadil, in the end, perhaps I'll just keep it and just ride
it with up to 700x50 tires to keep the standover height manageable.

Re: [RBW] Atlantis - Bombadil comparison

2010-05-18 Thread Ray Shine
Hi, Rene -- I have never ridden a Bombadill, much less own one. I do own a
size 61 Atlantis that I have toured fully loaded with panniers. The longest
tour was 2500 miles last summer on the ACA Western Express/Trans-Am
(Partially). I noticed no flex or weakness whatsoever with the Atlantis. It
is very stout. for comparison, my PBH is 87.5. I weigh 175 lbs. I carried as
much as 45-50 pounds of gear/food/water last summer, plus weight of Nitto front
and rear racks. Owning the Atlantis is why I am not particularly interested in
a Bomb or even a Hunq. I'm not skilled enough riding off-road to get the most
out of those two models, and neither can top the Atlantis for the sort of paved
road riding I do. I own four Rivendells. The Atlantis will be the last of the
brand that I part with.

Could anyone who has/had both compare them? Are they significantly different in

This is an interesting conversation. Every time I think about getting
an even bigger frame, end up thinking more about reach more than
standover. Based on these statements, I should be trying a 63cm
frame. Yet about a year and a half ago straddled a 62 orange
Quickbeam. The reach was so far my arms were fully extended on the
hoods. Couldn't really even get to the drops.

Maybe that bike had an unusually long stem. But to get that bike to
work for me, would probably need a 7 or 8cm stem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sizing on a A Homer Hilsen

2010-05-18 Thread Rene Sterental
I'm 5'11. It seems to me that I might have a shorter torso but long arms
and long legs. However, I've never been able to figure it out... :-)

When I went for my first fit, they immediately put me on the 61 AHH and also
had me test ride the Atlantis, I believe the 61 as well. I initially thought
the 61 AHH was too big (coming from where I was coming from) so Mark had me
test ride Grant's 58 AHH. After I did that, I realized the 61 was a better
fit and trusted them from then on.

When I decided I also wanted a Bombadil, Keven said the 60. He even had me
try out the 64, but I trusted them again. After I got my 60 frame and built
it up, I was initially concerned with the standover height as I had had to
adpat to the higher standover height on the AHH compared to my previoius
bikes, but had had no issues with the AHH. I even went back and they offered
to take it back, but after test riding the 56, I found it too cramped and
said I was keeping my 60.

That is my story and I'm sticking to it! :-)

When I had my Atlantis, it was not what I'd call a flexible bike. My
weight was between about 285 and 240 before I sold it. Did a couple
of S24O on the bike with probably 20 to 30 pounds of gear. No
problems with it. If it hadn't been too small (and being too intent
on a Hunqapillar) would not have sold it.

2010-05-18 Thread Rene Sterental
That's why I have 8 cm stems on my AHH and my Bombadil. If I wanted to
run longer stems, I'd definitely need smaller frames. The issue would
then be how much vertical stem and seatpost get exposed to get the
proper heights and relationships. I could place the handlebar below
the saddle... Oh wait! That's how I rode pre-Rivendell and I had the
hand, neck and shoulder pain...

I think I'm happy with my short 8 cm stems... ;-)

[RBW] Re: Atlantis - Bombadil comparison

2010-05-18 Thread Dave Craig
René

I have both bikes - a 64 cm Atlantis and a 60 cm Bombadil. I have
toured on both bikes and I ride each of them regularly.

The Bombadil is definitely stiffer. That works for me because I weigh
210 and I like to climb out of the saddle even when I'm touring with a
load. I also like to take advantage of rougher side routes like gravel
roads and trails if the opportunity presents itself during a tour. I
get a comfortable feeling of stability on the Bombadil that I like a
lot. However, the Atlantis served me well as a touring bike and I'd
still be touring on it if I hadn't bought the Bombadil.

I bought the Bombadil primarily because I was in the market for an MTB
that would fit me well enough to tour on while doing double duty as my
regular trail bike. Honestly, I also thought the double top tubes
looked kinda neat and that was a factor in my decision to purchase it.

As for handling, I guess I'm not too critical of a judge if the bike
rides well. I've got several bikes and they all have different
characteristics that I adjust to after a few minutes in the saddle.
Because my Bombadil and Atlantis are set-up so differently (tires,
handlebars, wheels), I don't feel like I can give you a decent
comparison of handling characteristics. On the road, I'm happy riding
for long distances on either bike and both are fine on fast decents
and in city traffic. Both handle graded dirt roads easily. The edge
goes to the Bomb on trails, but that's also an issue of flat bars
versus drops, 50mm tires versus 33's and thumb shifters versus DT's
(Bomb versus Atlantis, respectively).

Lastly, I'll say that I can relate to your concerns about sizing. I
had a 66cm Atlantis that I just wasn't comfortable with - probably
more of a mental issue than a sizing issue. I made the switch to a 64
after a couple of months of trying to convince myself that I was OK
with the fit of the 66. I've got 3 Riv bikes (the other is a 64cm QB).
All are about a size smaller than RBW recommends. I'm at the top end
of the range for the Bombadil. I have a really long PBH for my size
with a short torso. Even with a size smaller, I run short stems - dirt
drops on the Bomb and QB and a 7cm technomic on the Atlantis. All
three bikes fit nearly identically.

Hope that helps,

Dave

Could anyone who has/had both compare them? Are they significantly different

 handling?

 Thank you for the feedback!

My calculations show that that an 80mm Dirt Drop stem, which according
to Rivendell has a 65mm horizontal extension, is the equivalent of a
Nitto Technomic stem with a length of 8.1cm. Therefore, if you use a
6cm Technomic stem, you can get the bars 2cm closer to you.

The reason that is the case is because a Nitto Technomic stem has to
be raised more in order to achieve the same height as a Dirt Drop
stem, and the more you raise the Technomic stem, the more it will come
back towards you.

I'm not quite following your math (geometry?) on this. When they describe
the horizontal extension as 65 mm, wouldn't that be the just 5 mm longer
than a 6 cm Technomic stem?

Extension is going to be the offset from the center bolt. The Technomic has
to raised higher in the headtube (i.e. more stem showing) to have the bars
at the same height. But, the extension is still 6 cm (60 mm).

It was my understanding that the Dirt Drop and Technomic have the same quill
(190 mm). Since the angle from the quill is higher, you end up with ~50-75
mm of more rise available on the Dirt Drop, before you hit max height,
estimating from the images on the Riv site.

So, I think that the Dirt Drop would actually allow you to be slightly
closer, albeit at the tradeoff of higher bars.

previous Flikr sightings, I'd say it was Aaron Thomas but it was a
fleeting glimpse. I was jealous you were on your bike while I was in
may car. FYI, my office is about 2 minutes from the course. I'm
thinking an after-work jaunt up into the hills might be in order.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis - Bombadil comparison

2010-05-18 Thread doug peterson
Rene:

I'm 5'11, with a PBH of 86, which fit into both the 58 61 size
recommendations when I ordered the bike. Riv recommended 61 but I'd
been comfortable on a 58 so chose that. With a 10 cm stem, Noodle
bars saddle set same as my other bikes, the Atlantis felt like home
from the first ride. I like having a bit of clearance over the TT,
plus I can put on any honkin' big tire that'll fit. Ray I weigh the
same, carry the same loads share the same good results with the
Atlantis as a tourer. My guess is if you're a bit taller with a bit
longer PBH than me, the 61 will be a good fit.

I carried
as much as 45-50 pounds of gear/food/water last summer, plus weight of Nitto
front and rear racks. Owning the Atlantis is why I am not particularly
interested in a Bomb or even a Hunq.  I'm  not skilled enough riding off-road
to get the most out of those two models, and neither can top the Atlantis for
the sort of paved road riding I do.  I own four Rivendells.  The Atlantis
will be the last of the brand that I part with.

Subject: [RBW] Atlantis - Bombadil comparison

Could anyone who has/had both compare them? Are they significantly different
in terms of riding quality or feel? Is the Atlantis significantly flexier
when loaded vs the Bombadil with the 2 top tubes? Do they differ in their
 handling?

 Thank you for the feedback!
