Manny,
Look on craigslist. In your area there are likely lots of good, used tandems.

Brands to look for:
- burley
- santana

you'll see lots of those.
Used tandems are significantly cheaper than new. Figure 75% off of new
retail price.

And yes - tandems let riders of disparate speed and cadences stay
together and enjoy places together.

They are great bikes and I think under-appreciated.
We have a burley paso-doble and have been riding tandem for about
4yrs now. We love it.

Sadly, riv does not, yet, make a tandem. You're very close to where

She's 5'7 and the bike is a 58. With some minor tweaking, it feels
pretty good for me, and I'm 6'. It's a great bike, and I definitely
endorse the mixte experience; it just feels so solid in a way I
guess I didn't expect. Almost wish I would have gone with the big
back rack, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use it to cart some
weight.

She digs it, but probably is not as enthusiastic as me; I am, however,
the one in the family with the bicycle problem. I expect her love
will grow when she gets additional opportunities to get it out more,
it's such a smooth ride.

I have this same issue, more or less. We've been kicking around
building a garage just so we have ample bike-storage facilities.

I'm was thinking about using those pulley hoist systems to raise a set

back and forth.

RE: [RBW] Any Tandems?

2010-11-10 Thread Larry Powers

I will agree with most of what was said below but I will add that Cannondale
tandems still seem to be one of the best values for the dollar in a new tandem.
My stoker (wife) reports that the ride is much harsher on the C'dale then our
lugged steel Bilenky Tandem. The thudbuster seat post softens up the C'dales
ride significantly.

The problem with used is finding one that fits both of you. If you can find
one they will be much cheaper then new. Santana makes a good bike but often
specs parts that are not standard on Tandems so you have to work a little
harder to find them or have a local Santana dealer that you deal with.

Good luck.

[RBW] tamdems

2010-11-10 Thread akesling
My wife and I have ridden tandems and triplets for over 30 years. We
still have our orginal jack Taylor and I believe it still has the best
components with a tandem campy crankset and phil hubs and bottom brackets.
the derailers have been upgraded as the years have past. About 15 years
ago we made the mistake of riding a santana. the mistake being that we
had to have one. We had a steal noventa tandem made to our size and still
ride it today. It is our go to bike. When my dad past away we went down
to the factory and talked with Bill McCready about some upgrades for this
bike and we came home with santanas Beyond. Now that is a go fast light
tandem. We still use the noventa a great deal. there are several very
good tandem makers. I would sugest doing some online research, Bilenky,
co motion, burly, santana are all good.

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-10 Thread SFF
I think I figured out where I can find space in the garage. Our
community will be moving to a new recycling system starting Jan 1st,
so I can do away with my garage recycling space. Pretty sure I can
hang 3 bikes in this area. The only problem I have with the garage
space is when the garage door is up, it faces the street and the bikes
can be seen and a grab and ride away would be possible. Must keep the
door down just about all the time. Thats the winter plan for now.

Option two, as suggested by my wife - get ~500 sq ft of space (an
apartment) away from the house where I can store my bikes, my record
collection, and myself. Ouch!

Manny,
Look on craigslist.

[RBW] Re: Ordered a Bombadil

2010-11-10 Thread William
I'm going through a similar process. My Bombadil has a bullmoose bar
setup, and I am piecing together the drop bar setup. I tried the dirt
drop and it was too high and not enough horizontal reach for road
riding. I then mapped out all my bikes on drafting paper using the
frame drawing tutorial that Grant put out there. Based on where my
Hillborne and my go-fast road bike positioned me, I selected the stem
for the Bombadil and for my new Hilsen. I have the Hilsen set up and
it is perfecto. As soon as I get my lugged quill stem back from the
powdercoater, I'll be able to set up the Bomba in the touring
configuration. If you were to plot out your Hilsen and the Bomba on
top of it, that should give you some ideas about where you might want
to be.

[RBW] Re: Ordered a Bombadil

2010-11-10 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Kelly:

Nice choice!!!

I (and several others on this forum) have used the DaVinci cable
splitters to quickly switch between bar setups. It will require
dedicating brakes and shifters to each bar setup, and you will need to
purchase the necessary splitters and extra cables to configure it
properly, but once set up properly, it's REALLY NICE. Tonight, for
example, I intend to swap back to drops on my Bomba. I don't have to
set aside all evening for this... Just 10 minutes at a leisurely pace,
or 4 minutes and 21 seconds at a record-setting pace (which I'm proud
to say I hold that record, which appears on my YouTube vid)... How
cool is that?

If you are using canti brakes, you will likely need the DaVinci brake
cable splitters, although some may have a remedy for disconnecting the
brake cable at the canti yoke. If you are using V-brakes like me, you
can order extra brake noodles and simply disconnect at the brake
unit. It DOES require some planning, additional $ and a little
patience, but if this is what you seek, than this you shall have.

Your comment about going with 700 x 80 tires... I trust you mean 50mm
tires (which are 2 inches wide)? That's what I run on my Bomba. If
so, I'm also guessing that you'll need 65mm fenders like the Planet
Bike Cascadia 29er fenders. Anything narrower will be a tight fit.
Or if you meant 60mm tires on the Bomba (like the super wide Big
Apples), I am reasonably sure you won't get fenders to fit well over
these tires... At least I was unable to.

Good luck!

his specs?

As someone stated, the best way to get a lugged steel tandem is to do
what Grant did and purchase one from Mercian. Mercian makes great
frames and the one they made for Grant is a beauty!

Locally, at here in the SF Bay Area, one excellent tandem builder is
Bernie Mikkelsen:

Supposedly, Bernie was a consultant to Craig Calfee who makes the
world's lightest carbon (6lb frame!) and bamboo tandems. Good Luck!

We went custom Bilenky, because we wanted the SS couplers and
Bilenkey's custom prices for that were pretty comparable to a Co-

ready for the challenge. If you get serious, write and I'l hare more

[RBW] Oakland/Berkeley probability of theft?

2010-11-10 Thread jose
Hi All. I just moved to Oakland (Rockridge) from Houston and I'm
curious what peoples opinions are parking your Rivs here are.

In Houston, I felt fairly comfortable with locking up my Atlantis with
bags/lights/brooks onboard with just a cable lock during the day. No
one there pays too much attention to an old looking slow bike with a
bunch of crap on it (ha!).

Here I see only beater-bikes with no bags/lights/brooks parked on the
street.

So I'm wondering how secure I should go. Never leave lights on the
bike? Cover up the Rivendell logos? Get one of those locking seat
post clamp things? I realize that no bike on the street is ever safe,
but I'd like get a sense of what the probability of getting my stuff
jacked here is.

Oh, and I'm asking for during the day coffee and errand type trips.
For BART parking and late-night pub crawls I just bought a $50
craigslist special, but I would really like to be on my Atlantis as
much as I can be.

Thanks in advance,
-- J.

Or if you meant 60mm tires on the Bomba (like the super wide Big

these tires... At least I was unable to.

 Good luck!

but now I am thinking I don't want one.  I had it out to inspect it
but put it right back in the box. It was never installed and is brand
new with a new warranty and everything.  The 12 function will allow
you to track more than one bike.

This is what I have and I have the olive color.

[RBW] Re: Any Tandems?

2010-11-10 Thread msrw
One detail that no one else has mentioned

The first tandem my wife and I purchased was a custom steel Dennis
Bushnell. It had the lively handling that I preferred in my singles
bikes, but one needed to wrestle it around, and the slightest movement
from my wife would affect the steering.

We replaced it with a Ti Santana. Santana's have relatively more
stable handling--the first time we rode one it felt like a freight
train, but after riding tandems for awhile, we both saw that Santana's
approach to handling was preferable on a tandem--no more stoker steer,
the bike didn't need to be muscled around as much. All in all, on
tandems, stable handling works vastly better, even on a performance
bike. For me, that was counterintuitive.

This is going to sound strange, but one benchmark for telling if a
particular tandem's frame geometry will work well is to see how the
bike rides without a stoker. If it rides well (which our Bushnell
did) it may perform poorly with two riders on board. If it handles
poorly when riding without the stoker (which describes our Santana) it
may perform extremely well with two riders. Odd but true, at least for
us.

I leave it to the wisdom of the group. My girlfriend and I just

Since you are in the SF Bay Area, keep an eye out for Ibis tandems. They
didn't make a lot, but I've seen a few of them them show up in the past few
months.

Remember, where ever your relationship is going, a tandem will get it there

[RBW] Re: Oakland/Berkeley probability of theft?

2010-11-10 Thread Lee
Hi Jose. I live in San Francisco and frequent the East and South Bay
areas regularly. Here's my two cents: Definitely do not rely on a
cable lock in the Bay Area. Of course, thieves will target high-end
bikes and components, but I think even more so, they target weak
locks--cable locks in particular. Ironically, in this way, cable locks
act as an attractant in my opinion, regardless of the bike. On any
given weekend morning I can walk the streets near my apartment and
find part of a cable lock on the sidewalk or in the gutter.

I ride my Quickbeam as my daily bike, and I do lock it up outside
during the work day, as well as out in the city during the weekend and
nights. It's outfitted with a B-17 Special and either a Phil hub or
Shimano dynamo hub front wheel. In the latter case, I'll also have a
BM Cyo mounted to a small front rack. And, I usually have a tool
pouch hung from the saddle and a SuperFlash mounted on the seat stay.
My locking solution is a heavy cable through both wheels and the
saddle rails, which is then locked along with the frame to a bike rack
with a Kryptonite u-lock. I think it's the Evolution. I usually take
my tool pouch if it's night. During the day, depending on the area, I
may leave it on my bike. I always leave the SuperFlash and Cyo on my
bike regardless of time or place.

The only thing I feel really secure about this set-up is the frame and
u-lock situation. I take my chances with the heavy cable, hoping that
a bike thief won't try to get through that just to get my Brooks or a
Phil hub. One thing that works in my favor is the number of nicely
accessorized bikes that have become so popular in the city right now.
Go to any bar, coffee shop, or yoga studio in the Mission and you'll
have your pick of non-secured Brooks saddles and Phil wheels. But,
this is no real security solution, obviously.

I guess this is a long-winded way of saying that your instincts are
right, a cable-lock-only approach is likely to be a problem. I don't
think you have to cover up the logo, but lock down with a u-lock
anything you don't won't to risk being taken, and remove any item you
positively don't want to be stolen. Other than that, you weigh the
risks and take your chances. Of course, that advice probably fits most
urban areas. For this one, I think after a month or two of being out
and about, you'll find your comfort zone in the areas you frequent.

Good luck!
Lee

 Thanks in advance,
 -- J.
