Thanks guys for the tips...

I am familiar with de-anoing parts but thought it would be a real
shame to remove the anodizing if someone really needs black but only
has silver.

I suppose I could buy silver and then sell too.. oh well was just
looking for the easy way.

[RBW] 3 hour old Nitto Technomic deluxe stem 12cm 25.4

2010-11-16 Thread storm
Hello, stopped by Rivendell today to buy a Nitto Technomic deluxe 12cm
25.4 for my wife. Got it home installed it and she did not like the
way her bars fit.

Anyone interested in buying it from me? I paid 60.09 around 2pm today.

I can work with Rivendell with a return but this was my fault. As they
say measure twice cut once.

Let me know if your interested.

[RBW] Re: "Release the Hounds!"... Announcing Riv Rally East 2011

2010-11-16 Thread Amit
Excellent work BB - many thanks for putting this rally together!

My buddy and I will be coming from Detroit, perhaps via Canada. If
anyone has an interest in car-pooling or caravanning from Indiana/
Michigan/Ohio/Ontario write back and we can make it happen!

The Riv group is entertaining, sometimes overwhelming, and a very
often a lot of fun. I've enjoyed reading the family's stories and
learning from (expensive!) lessons and experiences. I'm excited to
meet you all in real-life!

2010-11-16 Thread Allan in Portland
Your M-bar setup is about what I have now. I don't have any pictures,
but what I'm currently running with is a North Face backpack-topper/
fanny-pack 2 in 1 hanging from my bars. The straps that would be used
to hold it when topping a backpack I've wrapped around the brake
grips, and the waist strap for when it is fanny pack mode I have
around the riser loop at the back of the Nitto M12.

The only problem is it can't hold my lunch and my rain gear at the
same time. I'm also not sure how it would handle a good rain. Hence
I'm considering a saddlebag of some sort.

or here on my Quickbeam: http://tinyurl.com/3y9k8g4

Please note that in the QB picture, the Bagman support had come loose
and the bag is hanging lower than it normally sits. My QB is a 60cm.

This sack is too big for my purposes. They are $175 new. Mine is near
new and you can have it for $135 shipped.

Thanks for looking,

WELL ALL RIGHT... The date and venue have been set! Riv Rally East
will take place the weekend of May 6-8, 2011 in Wellsboro, PA, home to
the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania".

Here's a link to Bill Yacovissi's website, with LOTS of information,
including links to Wellsboro information - http://pinecreekbikerides.com/

All are welcome; here's how it will go down (quite simply) We'll
all converge on the town of Wellsboro. PA Friday night (or early
Saturday AM), do some scenic and adventurous group rides together on
Saturday and Sunday, enjoy good food, drink and great company, then
spend the rest of the year talking about how great it was... You will
need to arrange your own travel and lodging (but below is an extensive
list of lodging options). I'm merely providing the idea, the meeting
place and time... the rest is up to you.

Here are a few details:

Arrive Friday evening (May 6) in Wellsboro (staying at a hotel/inn/B&B/
campground of your choice... information below).

Saturday morning: Grand Loop Ride (aka Wellsboro Loop) , departing at
9 AM from Wellsboro Green. This will consist of a beautiful,
(supposedly) easy ride through the Pine Creek Gorge. The full loop
will be 45 miles, and the pace will be slow to moderate. There WILL
be bailout options for shorter loops (25 and 33 miles, the latter of
which will still include the most scenic parts of the canyon, but will
cut off 12 miles... I will promise this. Anyone willing to ride the 45
miles... I will ride it with you, no matter how long it takes... I've
even got lights, you know...

Saturday evening – We can attempt to dine together at the same
establishment in town, or eat separately and then after dinner
converge at a meeting spot (ie local tavern)… There will be plenty of
options.

Sunday morning – Pick-a-Loop Ride, departing at 9AM from Wellsboro
Green. Local ride expert Bill Yacovissi has recommended a variety of
rides, including one very nice out-and-back route called the Colton
Point Loops, which cover a variety of rolling terrain (mostly dirt
roads), ranging from 35 to 45 miles (depending which loop option you
choose). The first and last 10 miles we all ride the same route.
There may be other ride options as well.

Sunday afternoon - Depart home after ride.

Expectations / Disclaimer: I hope as many Riv riders as possible (and
friends) will join these rides. I will do my part to ensure everyone
has the necessary information and support they need (and I trust we
will all work together), but I make no claims of being a professional
event planner, and expect people to manage their own plans. Depending
on the size of the group it might make sense to split into a few
smaller groups on the rides. We can decide this the democratic way.

Admittedly I’ve never been to Wellsboro or to the Gorge, so I have to
rely on the testimony and advice of others. But I am very confident
we will enjoy Wellsboro and the surrounding area. Fortunately Bill
Yacovissi has put together an awesome and very detailed website. He
has also (tentatively) agreed to join us for at least one of the rides
and possibly dinner afterwards, to which we openly welcome him.

Hotel /Inn/B&B Options:

As Wellsboro is the largest town near the gorge, many of the hotels,
inns and B&Bs are located here. I am confident there are PLENTY of
options to suit everyones’ individual tastes and budgets. Here is a
link to a directory of options within Wellsboro and the surrounding
area. http://www.wellsboroweb.com/wwdirectory/lodging.shtml

I STRONGLY URGE you all to make your reservations early. I understand
(from Bill Y) that demand for hotel space has risen due to increased
natural gas exploration in the area, and hotel rooms may become
increasingly hard to find as we get closer to May.

Here are 2 that I briefly researched and picked out:

The Penn Wells Hotel and Lodge has many rooms available at the moment
(between the hotel and the lodge, both located close to each other
near the center of Wellsboro). Rates for 2011 are not yet available,
but will be approx $95 per room; I will request a group discount, and
let you know if I'm successful. Singles with a queen bed and Doubles
with 2 double beds are available. Check out their site at http://pennwells.com/
(Note: Bikes may be brought into the doubles, but not the singles).

This strikes me as more like your typical chain hotel, and it appears
to offer more services than the motels.

The Sherwood Motel (also located in town) has good reviews. (I got a
pretty good vibe from the owner, Marsha when she phoned me.) Check
them out at: www.sherwoodmotel.org
All rooms are smoke-free, no pets allowed. Bicycles are NOT allowed
in the rooms, and Marsha (the motel owner) was kind enough to call me
to discuss how they might accommodate a large group of bicycles… The
hotel does have some limited storage in their basement, but Marsha
assured me if the weather is OK, bicycles are perfectly safe left on a
car rack. (I personally will plan

2010-11-16 Thread doug peterson
Racks, baskets, panniers, saddlebags, handlebar bags.it's all good
stuff & I think Riv says something about making a bike 2X as useful.
I'd up the ante on that idea to like 10X as useful. It's amazing what
can be done with a cheap rack, a generic stuff sack & bungee cords.
Put some thought into it, get some good stuff and the possibilities
are endless.

[RBW] FS: Berthoud Saddlebag (banana bag); Berthoud Saddlebag Small

2010-11-16 Thread Clayton Scott
Hi All,

I have two Berthoud Saddlebags for sale. Both are Black. Both in used but
very good condition.

The first one is like this one:
http://www.wallbike.com/berthoud/handlebar-bags/gb288-small-saddlebag
$45 shipped.

The other one is the "banana bag" model. Looks like this:
http://www.renehersestore.com/catalog/IMG_1362.JPG (but with the toestrap
instead of clickfix)
Note, this is the "old" version that attaches with a toestratp not the
clickfix version now available. It is the buckle version.
$75 shipped

Thanks,
Clayton

[RBW] Re: Saddle bag/sack in front?

2010-11-16 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I keep my saddle bag on the saddle (where it works very well).

For the front I have a Nitto Mini/Platrack combination rack with a
Wald 139 (18x13x6 in) basket.
What I love most about this basket is I the fact that I can just
"toss" stuff in there on a whim...virtually anything... from a small/
medium duffel bag to a hat, gloves, bag of bagels, etc... It's so
convenient. Plus there's that devilish inner voice inside of me that
chuckles every time someone looks at my bike with genuine indifference
(or mild disdain)... for they probably will never know the pure joy
and fulfillment of such simple utility... "HA HA! Go ahead", I say
"Just TRY to carry a dozen bagels in that lycra jersey... That will
require four bagels in each pocket, by my count... I DON'T think
you've got the stones to attempt it, DO YOU, Racer Boy???"...

Peace,
BB

2010-11-16 Thread doug peterson
I've used Rivendell's original Hobo bag on the front of my Atlantis
with drop bars. I added a Nitto mini front rack to support it as I
tend to overload things. It didn't have enough volume and the straps
on the bars kinda got in my way so I now have an Acorn Boxy Rando on
the Nitto.

The chatter about front load vs rear load, and how geometry comes into
play is highly personal and depends I think more on your riding
style. Personally, my Atlantis handles better with more weight on the
front. This is completely opposite the conventional wisdom about Rivs
being rear loaders. There are plenty of photos on the Riv website as
well as Cyclofiend's gallery of Rivs with humungous saddlebags, front
baskets, panniers, etc. You really have to play around with your
personal loads (commuting, utility, camping, touring, etc.) to see
what works for you.

Almost forgot. Please consider the Finger lakes region in NY if it doesn't

+1 Live in NW CT, would love to try to make it. It would be nice to have a

[RBW] Re: Saddle bag/sack in front?

2010-11-16 Thread William
I've given serious thought to trying my Saddlesack Large in the
front. My thought was to simply set it on top of my Nitto Mini/
Platrack assembly. To get an attach point for the leather straps that
want to go through the saddle loops I was thinking about this piece:

http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=9587

I chatted with m...@riv HQ about the idea and he pulled out that same
nitto lamp holder piece and said he'd seen it done. For my Bombadil I
might even choose to run an R-14 rear rack up front which has the
right size loop for the slot in the Saddlesack Large.

Then I started having such good luck just strapping stuff to the
platrack up front that I didn't pursue the concept. It's still
something I'd like to have in my repertoire of configuration options.
My biggest concern is the dreaded trail factor. Velo Orange says that
low trail is better for front loads, and Rivs are kind of high medium
trail. It still would be worth a try, provided you are only out labor
if it doesn't work out. If you spend $400 on racks and bags, hate it
and want to get rid of everything, that would be a bummer.

Hello,

Any folks that have given it a try? What did you think of it? What was
your set-up (bag, handlbars, levers, rack, etc.)?

I've been thinking of going this route with a pair of mustache bars,
but am not sure they'll have enough forward sweep in the right spot.

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: For those who like to finance 650B speculative projects....

2010-11-16 Thread John Speare
This project was quietly cancelled last week. See bullet item buried in this
blog post:
http://rawlandcycles.blogspot.com/2010/11/suspended-animation-not.html

*The Mini Moto project is on the backburner for the time being. There is
still a lot of work required to design and then produce this tire. We simply
do not have the time to carry this tire out. I will email those who had
pre-ordered a set(s) with further details. *

I also pre-ordered a pair -- it's a bit distressing to see the Mini-moto
option still on the "products" page given the blog post.

I'm hoping to hear from Sean soon regarding the pre-order I put in a couple
weeks ago.

In the meantime, if you were thinking of throwing in on this pre-order, you
might want to hold off.

If the bike the derailer is installed on has horizontal dropouts, you might
find moving the wheel toward the front of the dropouts helps. Did for me,

kinda amazing it doesn't work with all Shimano parts and specifically
designated as 9 speed.
As Jim pointed out something is not set up right if it doesn't work. I
would try different shifters as my next choice of fixing the issue.
I thought there was something unique about Dura Ace shifters
compatibility too.

I'm running all sorts of Suntour/Campy/shimaNo combinations and they
all work fairly decent.

OK, here's a real brain-tweaker. A retro-direct bike cannot be rolled

[RBW] Re: Problem with adjusting the rear derailler / bar-end shifters

2010-11-16 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
If you can determine that the shifters are indeed 9sp, that the
derailleur hanger is not bent, that the derailleur and downtube cable
stop are snug, and that the cable is routed properly under the bb,
then I would check the cable pinch bolt. If the cable runs on the
wrong side of the bolt, it changes the leverage ratio slightly, and
may lead to the problem you're describing.

[RBW] Re: NY/PA/NJ Rivendell Rally - Spring 2011

2010-11-16 Thread Rick P
Two fellas (myself and a friend) here in northeast Ohio are definitely
interested. Great idea.

We might consider the area around Wellsboro, PA, near Pine Creek.
There are at least three hotels in town (at various price points) and
camping at multiple public areas near Pine Creek. In town are a couple
of decent restaurants, a bike shop, and a good little bagel spot. Also
in nearby Mansfield, PA is a wonderful little bike shop owned by
framebuilder Tom Oswald -- Oswald Cycle Works. (Oswald has posted some
links to rides of various lengths in the area --oswaldcycleworks.com.)
Wellsboro is surrounded by miles of quiet roads, both paved and dirt.
And if anyone is interested there is also some terrific mountain
biking in the area.

Wherever we go, it sounds fun.

Rick

[RBW] Re: Problem with adjusting the rear derailler / bar-end shifters

2010-11-16 Thread reynoldslugs
I have the identical problem on my Davidson, with a 12-34 9 speed
cassette matched to a 24-36-46 triple. The guys at the LBS tried
everything, replacing each part, replacing all the parts, lubing,
relubing, and readjusting the derailleur.

My problem is the same that you describe : the derailleur can be
adjusted so it does well with the three largest, or three smallest,
cogs - - but not all 9.

This is a deeply perplexing issue, since the identical drive train on
my Bob Jackson shifts just fine, dandy.

For now, I have replaced the bar-end shifters with Paul Thumbies,
moving the shfiters up on the top of my handlebars. Not as
convenient, looks odd, but shifts somewhat better. The chief
mechanic, Loathsome Fritz, thinks the problem relates to the long
cable runs. Shortening the cables by moving the shifters up top seems
to help a little. Still not perfect.

If you can figure this out, I will be grateful for whatever solution
you can come up with.

[RBW] Re: Problem with adjusting the rear derailler / bar-end shifters

2010-11-16 Thread Earl Grey
Another thought:

Are you sure the shifters are 9-speed? I can coax 8 clicks out of my
Shimano 7 speed barends, so perhaps you have an 8 speed that gives you
9 clicks, but the amount of cable pull would be wrong, leading to mis-
shifts at one end of the cassette or the other.

This is mere idle brainstorming, so take it with a grain of salt.

If you have multiple bikes and wheels, and 7, 8 , and 9 speed
cassettes and chains lying around, going friction is an incredibly
freeing proposition. Suddenly everything works with everything, and
you don't even have to think about it!

Good luck,

Gernot

[RBW] Re: Problem with adjusting the rear derailler / bar-end shifters

2010-11-16 Thread Earl Grey
Juhani,

>From what I can tell you setup should work fine.

Have you checked whether the derailer hanger is bent? See
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html for how.

Then follow Sheldon's derailer adjustment procedure on the same page
(start on the largest cog instead of the smallest, as your derailer is
low normal, and reverse all his instructions ["shift down" becomes
"up", etc.]).

If it still doesn't work, simply turn the indexing off. :) I turned
the shifting off on my 9 speed Shimano bar ends (with low normal XTR
derailer) after getting Silver bar ends on my other bike. I much
prefer friction shifting now, though for 20 years I rode bar ends in
index mode. The Shimanos however don't friction shift as well as the
Silvers, so I just ordered a second pair of shifters from Riv, and
will just use the Shimano bar end pods with them.

I'm with the OP Bobby on the Ecco train. I used to wear Ecco
walkathons for years until they stopped making them. I recently
bought a pair of Terranos (by Ecco), and they work perfectly with the

low profile shoe with a full grain leather upper and stiff sole. I'd
say Bobby and I have very similar tastes.

I don't have a Saddlesack, but I use a Carradice Bagman support on my Sam H

I have the QR version and leave it on all the time, but the attachment is
only one hex screw, so it's not a lot of work to put it on every time,
either.
Just my 2c.

I don't have a Saddlesack, but I use a Carradice Bagman support on my Sam H and
I love it.
I have the QR version and leave it on all the time, but the attachment is only
one hex screw, so it's not a lot of work to put it on every time, either.
Just my 2c.

[RBW] Problem with adjusting the rear derailler / bar-end shifters

2010-11-16 Thread Juhani
Hi,

I’ve problem with adjusting my rear derailleur. It’s a Shimano XT 9-
speed low normal (rapid rise) with XT 11-34 cassette and XT 9-speed
chain. All of those are quite new and shouldn’t be worn out. The cable
is new and just lubricated and the housing should be fine as well.

The shifters are brand new Shimano Dura-Ace 9-speed bar-end shifters
which I’m trying to install.

Adjustment of the B-screw and H- & L-limit screws should be fine. I
turned the adjuster on down tube cable stop halfway between all the
way tight and all the way loose before attaching the cable. The cable
is tightened with 4th hand tool so there shouldn’t be any slack in it.

I adjusted the rear derailleur like this: I chose the middle chain
ring in the front and shifted to second largest cog in the rear. Then
turned the adjuster until it shifted to third cog. Then I turned the
adjuster back so that the derailleur shifted back to the second cog.
And finally adjusted it so that it wouldn’t make any noise.

The derailleur shifted relatively fine on the biggest cogs, but not
the 3 smallest ones. If I adjusted it so that the smallest ones
shifted fine, then the biggest wouldn’t - and vice versa.

Any ideas how to get it right?

The low normal rear derailleur and Dura-Ace bar-end shifters should be
compatible, right?

Juhani

You can remove the black anodizing yourself. Some use lye based oven
cleaner. or just lye.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Hillborne, all Waterford

2010-11-16 Thread MichaelH
Very nice bike, but about 10 cm too small for me. For others who
might be pondering a purchase, I can add that I run the White hubs and
cranks on my Rambouillet. The crank and rings are absolutely super,
and way better looking than it appears in photos. You can run
virtually any combination of rings you want. I run a 44/30 with an
11/28. which gives me a very wide range of gears and a pretty simple
shifting pattern. Some people complain about the noise White hubs
make, but I have found it a very steady sound which is covered by wind
noise above 15mph. This looks like a very sweet bike. Can we ask
what you are asking for it?

A noble endeavor.

It's a shame Paul doesn't have a silver (or at least gray) barrel
adjuster to go on its silver ano thumbies. Doesn't anyone make silvery-
gray-ish plastic? Must be hard to source.

I also wish DaVinci would make silver cable couplers.

[RBW] Re: Sackville SaddleSack Tips

2010-11-16 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi!

The way I've done it is to thread a strap through the D-rings
horizontally, then bring the ends of the strap up to the saddle (over
the bag's opening flap) and pass them over my Nitto saddlebag grip's
"handle". When tightened, the strap will pull toward the saddle and
up, lifting the bottom of the bag away from the tire. I used one of
the 1-meter Irish straps from RBW, though I don't think it required
the full length; maybe needed 30"?

I can't think of any reason why you couldn't get the same effect
without the saddlebag grip; simply pass the strap through the saddle's
wire frame,

I can't say this'll work for you... it did for me. But I had a 57cm
frame with a steep-ish seat tube and at least two fistfuls of seat
post showing. That is, a relative abundance of vertical space. You may
need to consider the SaddleSack Small if this doesn't raise the bag
enough for you.

There are potential complications, as you are not only pulling the bag
*up* but also pulling the bag toward the saddle... perhaps that'll
cause thigh-rub or interfere with brake cables; a stand-off between
the "back" of the bag and the seatpost might help you there. (The
saddlebag grip definitely helped me that way; it inherently provides
maybe a couple of inches of standoff.)

I actually let my loaded SaddleSack Medium simply rest on my fender
(SKS chromoplastic) at one point. The only immediate problem that
caused was that a fender stay came un-capped and the bare metal tip
poked and prodded the bottom of my saddlebag, chewing up the leather
somewhat. Even after I capped the stay and lifted the bag as described
above, it still marred the leather on the bottom as I jounced along.
More beausage than I really wanted.

In any case, what surprised me was that there was no obvious
detrimental effect on the fender! The stainless steel stays and the
fender's material and curved shape apparently provide a relatively
strong platform. I do suspect, though, that long term that would have
to take a toll on the fender. But if my rack became unusable for some
reason, I'd have no problem finishing a journey that way.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean
