[RBW] Re: New Sam Color

2011-02-21 Thread Earl Grey
I am not huge on silver, but with the cream accents and fenders it's
fairly stunning. Love the bar tape color, too.

Speaking of lawyers lips, I wasn't aware that ANY rivs had them. Too
bad. My TaiwaSam doesn't, and I am glad.

[RBW] Re: More Winter Project updates

2011-02-21 Thread William
Bill

That's a really really good guess. So close, but no. I went and
threw conventional wisdom a curveball, followed the Mile example and
set up a 700C kit for my erstwhile 650B A. Homer Hilsen. Now I can
switch back and forth in ~20 minutes. It looks like fenders will only
fit with really skinny tires, but I have room for Ruffy Tuffys. I
have 28s on there now.

After seeing people over and over try a 650B conversion on a 700C bike
and end up with a too-low BB, it made sense to me to start with a
really low BB 650B bike and have an alternate configuration with 700C
raise it up a touch. The difference in BB height as pictured with
700x28s is only ~6mm higher than it is with Hetres.

I had the wheelset and the brakeset on hand anyway, so it cost me
nothing but effort to try it out. I truly don't know if it's Einstein
or Frankenstein, but throwing this together makes it significantly
easier to hold off on buying a Roadeo.

For unwaxed cotton canvas, it will probably work ok. You may get some weird
shrinkage from the immersion, but it ought to stretch out. You might try
stuffing it tightly with other clothing to help maintain its shape while in
the washer.

Safest way is a scrub brush with some light detergent - Dawn to take out
grease stains. One pass with mostly soap and then a quick rinse should
prevent the absorption of the water.

A dry heat-on wax like the Filson stuff can protect such a fabric, then you
just use a dry stiff brush to clean it.

hope that helps,

This reminds me, I ended up cleaning my sidewalls (http://
groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch/browse_thread/thread/
2aca181cfb49460d/) with some really old "goop"-like, lanolin hand-
cleaner. Gently scrubbed with a scotch pad and they look almost like
new. They are pack to the original color, just with thin, black
stripes in a few areas where the rubber had creased from the inner
casing for whatever reason. They looks so good, I'll probably not
bother with latex after all.

[RBW] winter projects/want to buy handlebars

2011-02-21 Thread ejg
Hi all

Well, it's still winter and somehow I managed to finish my 1970
Raleigh Competition "winter project" (Thanks to list you list members
who sold me bits I needed)

Anyway, another project is in the works and I need some handlebars. My
other bikes have Nitto Noodles 46cm and Nitto Randonneur bars (unsure
of the size)

I'm looking for a Nitto drop bar thats not as wavy as the Noodle and
not as flared as the Rando. I'd like something with parallel ramps and
drops or something close.

Checked the RIV site, but they don't have any bars I want. The Grand
Bois bars are an option, but I would prefer to buy something used and
26.0.

Thanks in advance

EJG

[RBW] Sam for a Sam

2011-02-21 Thread Adam
Greetings All,

A quick note to see if there is any curiosity in a potential bike
trade. I have a 52cm Hillborne with plenty of beausage though
mechanically perfect that I've had for close to 2 years. I recently
hopped on a larger frame and realized I may be more comfortable on a
56cm. I am perfectly content to ride my 52cm for the next decade but
thought I might see if there is anyone out there with a 56 that feels
too big. Located in Berkeley for logistic's sake.

Cheers,
Adam

[RBW] Re: Cleaning Canvas

2011-02-21 Thread J. Burkhalter
Hey Eric,

I've never cleaned any of my Carradice stuff, but just this past
weekend I finally cleaned my Filson briefcase that is the tan color
similar to the Acorn Bags. Anyway, it's had a big splotch from some
homemade salad dressing and another spot from a blueberry smoothie on
it for a while. I didn't think either would ever come out with
Filson's "wipe or brush clean only" method, but after I got some fried
eggs on the bag (don't ask) I figured it was time to give it a scrub.
I started using a brush under running water in the kitchen sink. The
blueberry stain wasn't going anywhere, and the bag was too wet to see
if the oil stain was leaving. So, I got some Phil's Hand Cleaner and
worked it into the fabric with the brush, and then flushed it really
well with more water. It took a day or so to dry, but the oil stain
vanished and the blueberry stain is way less noticeable.

If you do end up washing it, you can always "reproof" with the
Carradice, Filson, or similar wax. I've never done this, but I
imagine the process might take a little while.

Good luck,
-Jay B

Brush it off when it dries. If that doesn't work, you might try washing
it in a bucket of water. BTW - fenders do a great job keeping off
"road grime..."

[RBW] Re: More Winter Project updates

2011-02-21 Thread William
The tires are Maxxis true 25's. The clearances on this bike are
horrible. I had it built custom in 1992 by Bill Davidson, and I
didn't spec tire clearances. On regular short reach brakes, I have
the pads adjusted almost all the way UP. If I wanted to make room for
fenders on this bike, I'd have to run like 19mm tires or some other
such nonsense. I have to content myself to leaving this as a fair
weather ride.

Fret not, though. I have yet another secret project nearing reality.
A project that addresses the opening in my stable for a lightish
sporty 700C bike that takes a wider tire and full fenders. What
could it be? Hint: It does not involve buying another bike.

This may sound like a silly question to those would value "beausage," but ...
How does one clean a Carradice or other canvas bag? I took my Carradice
saddlebag for a ride in the rain this past weekend, and it of course got

Is there a way short of throwing it in the wash to get it clean (or at least

[RBW] More Winter Project updates

2011-02-21 Thread William
A big part of my winter projects involved liquidating a bunch of my
high-value and comparatively low utility bike parts. Highlights
included selling some Ultegra Brifters and Flight deck computer form
my tandem, which allowed me to convert it to indexed barcons and
proper V-Brake levers.

Another big conversion was converting my go-fast Davidson Signature to
more of a rando bike. I used my rebate to get a Mark's Rack, and
parted out a full Chorus 10 speed kit. Now the Davidson has friction
barcons, a compact double, and a handlebar bag with decaleur. A
failed part of this conversion was I tried to get a 46-29 compact
double on there, but couldn't manage to work around the braze on ft
derailleur tab. I tried modifying a clamp type braze on, but it
didn't work out. I might revisit that, but if I ever get a repaint
that braze on is history. As it sits, it's a 50/34 in front with a
12-26 9 speed in back. That's good for a lot of things for a go-
fast.

FWIW, all-metal Campy seems to be doing REALLY well on the second-hand
market. I parlayed about $1500 in ebay sales, and if anything made my
bike more functional.

The bike also exhibits another hideous color-combination, for which I
might be developing a reputation. I have a close relative fighting
breast cancer, so I wanted to get the pink out one way or another.

Yup. A "third hand" is usually a spring loaded clamp that fits over the
shoes of caliper brakes to hold them against the rim when adjusting the
cables.

I find third and fourth hand tools very useful when setting up bikes. The
fourth hand is also a perfect tool for really snugging up zip ties both on
and off the bike.

Eric,

If you're talking about the cotton stubby (not the wool one) it'll probably
fit you. I have a pretty large noggin (~7 3/4) and there's plenty of room to
adjust it larger. I also have a Walz wool cap that fits me well and I don't
even think it's their largest size.

14 days, 8 on the bike. Check these maps for routes:

Part 1, actual:

Part 2, planned, but got changed last minute (see text):

We took trains to connect from and to Tokyo, and to bridge bigger
distance through less interesting terrain.

[RBW] Re: Tandem tour of Japan

2011-02-21 Thread Earl Grey
2 weeks, 8 days on the bike, plenty of time for sight-seeing and
eating. Basically we took a train from Tokyo to the north coast, rode
around the Noto peninsula, and from there to Kanazawa, Hikone on Biwa
Lake, Nara, and Kyoto, jumping on trains every once in a while to
bridge distances that were too large. Then back to Tokyo on the
Shinkansen. For a pleasant bike tour in Japan, basically stay away
from the population centers along the south coast of Honshu.

Re: [RBW] Re: On shipping bike parts to our two finest states

2011-02-21 Thread William Pustow
It really depends on where in Chicago. In areas where UPS thinks it's safe
to leave a package they will. If they think there's a reasonable chance of
theft they will not leave it.
I can think of two solutions: Leave a note for the driver that you'll pick
it up at the UPS facility. If the UPS facility is not convenient then check
with the local UPS Store (they're everywhere) and have it delivered there for
pickup. First check ti see what they charge you for this.

[RBW] 650B in switzerland...

2011-02-21 Thread david
i'm having lots of trouble finding a way to get these other than very
expensive shipping plus customs from rivendell. i can have something
from Schwalbe ordered, but they don't deliver that size to switzerland
so even that has to go through germany and takes 4 weeks.

if anyone has experience please let me know!
