Do you notice instability issues at certain speeds above 20mph when front

[RBW] Re: Riding the Atlantis

2011-04-05 Thread doug peterson
Khalid:

I've been touring with my Atlantis since 03 & have loaded it many
different ways. The front v rear question comes up in discussions
with tourists on all kinds of bikes. It's common for two people with
the same bike to each prefer a different loading scheme. In other
words, there's no "best way" to load a bike.

Consider that the rider is the majority of the weight and the rider is
a live load, ie., moving around, climbing out of the saddle, etc. So
individual riding style has a strong influence on how the bike handles
with a load.

Probably like a lot of other people, I started with just a rear rack &
pair of panniers, and a bunch of stuff strapped to the top of the
rack. For me, the handling was terrible. Adding front low riders and
splitting the load into 4 bags was a huge improvement. At one point
on a tour I was getting some noticeabale rear wobbling, so I just
swapped front & rear bags. Problem solved. I did some experiments at
home with my typical loads and concluded that for me the optimal
handling was about 60% on the front and 40% on the rear. My loading
for lodging tours is front bags only. For camping tours, I add rear
bags for the extra gear.

Front low riders on the Atlantis don't seem to affect handling in any
negative way. Steering gets a bit heavy but the bike remains stable.
I always have an Acorn Boxy Rando bag on a small Nitto front rack on
the bike, and don't hesitate to load the bag full with all kinds of
junk. The rack, bag & contents proably top 5-6 lbs frequently.

My suggestion is for you to experiment with load placement on your own
bike at home. Your riding style, where you like the load (high or
low), how much weight, etc., are all individual variables. It's
actually a fun exercise if done at home on a known route, instead of
trying to sort it out while on tour.

One bit if advice: spend the bucks for good racks; they are worth
it. Nitto, Tubus, Bruce Gordon, etc. I will promise a cheap, flimsy
rack, regardless of placement, will make your life miserable with 20
lbs of panniers attached to it.

Wow... that takes me back to the last century. Probably long enough ago
that everything has changed.

A few of us took our "new" mountain bikes there for a couple nights. There
were permits involved, but it was pretty cool. Rode. Cooked. Camped. Rode
back down to Avalon and the harbor. We packed up the bikes and gear at the
end and were suprised that the ferry was 10 minutes early. Boarded and
stretched out in the sun. It pushed away from the dock and announced we
would be arrived in San Pedro some time in the future.

Of course, we had parked in Long Beach. And had the ferry from that port,
rather than San Pedro. Though we all agreed that it looked curiously
identical to the one we were on as it passed by about 10 minutes later.

Luckily, we had bikes. So the trek to our car just became part of the
story...

None taken.

But, I still think that if there were repeated, documented incidents of
speed wobbles or shimmy (a different topic than what I thought from your
initial question about rear loading - shimmy is an oscillation at a specific
speed under particular load conditions), they would have appeared in this
list and could be found in the archives. We have had some discussion about
that, and here's a quick search using "atlantis shimmy"

The cause of speed wobble/shimmy is not well understood, and it gets hashed
to death via online forums.

A good place to start is here:

hope that was more helpful for what you were asking about.

I tour with front and rear panniers, plus a handlebar bag. My Atlantis
handles perfectly unless I try to squeeze too much weight in the
handlebar bag. Front panniers, no problem, even if I load them up with
heavy things. As I like to tour in the mountains, I have plenty of
experience on downhills with a load. No problem.

[RBW] Re: Which retro derailleur for a Bombadil?

2011-04-05 Thread Erik
The Suntour derailleurs were fabulous in terms of durability, and in
the shifting benefits that come from a derailleur that remains solid
in its various pivots. One retrofit that I recall making, "back in
the day," was to replace the upper jockey wheel of a Suntour
derailleur with a floating Shimano jockey. The float in that upper
wheel is crucial in compensating for the changing chain angle as one
goes through the gears, and results in a much smoother/quieter
drivetrain.

Re: [RBW] Retro Rear Der

2011-04-05 Thread Tim McNamara
It's a dual pivot so it does mimic the SunTours in that regard, but I have
never seen a Rally that was a slant parallelogram design and that was the other
key thing in improving shifting. IIRC the Rally was discontinued before the
SunTour patent expired and Shimano pounced on it. I'd have to go look at the
Campy timeline.

The Rally derailleurs do shift better with modern cog profiles and flexible
3/32" chains; they were terrible back in the day of 5 speeds.

Almost anything else. Those derailleurs shifted very poorly, even by
Campagnolo standards of the time. Any cheap SunTour contemporary derailleur

[RBW] WTB/WTT: less than pristine 10cm Nitto Pearl or Tech Dlx.

2011-04-05 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Howdy folks.

I just discovered that the stem I had powder coated black for a "modern"
bike build is more like an 11cm than a 10cm (I still really don't get the
Nitto sizing). Anyway, because I would be powder coating it, I can do some
sanding and light filing to remove scratches above the minimum insertion
line. Anybody have a well used but with unmangled hardware Pearl or
Technomic Deluxe? I have a lot of extra stuff, so a trade might be
possible.

Thanks, Doug

2011-04-05 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Interesting; thanks for posting that. I wonder what my frame was made from:
certainly oversized and quite light, but doubtless not as thinwall as tubing
for light road racers. Actually, I think a good part of the bike's appeal
was the frame design: IIRC, it was well balanced: not to twitchy, not too
slow and, in particular, the front end seemed easier to keep straight over
soft surfaces than some other mtbs I have owned.

[RBW] Re: Which retro derailleur for a Bombadil?

2011-04-05 Thread Michael_S
I have Suntour XC Pro dérailleurs on two bikes. They work fine with
friction shifting in either 6, 7 or 8 speeds. If you want to use
Accushift thumb shifters , Suntours version of indexed shifting you
will need a Suntour hub and cassette IMO. The cassette spacing is
slightly different than shimaNo's of the same size and the freewheel
housing spline is different too.

BTW.. where are these dérailleurs you speak of I'm always looking
for clean rear dérailleurs.

People take the ferry over and ride to Twin Harbors dirt roads
most of the way when you leave Avalon. There is a store and

Patrick,

Here are some specs to help you decide.

The specs for the current Prestige tubing:
http://www.tange-design.com/products_detail.php?sn=161

Here's the specs on the older Prestige tubing:
http://www.equusbicycle.com/bike/tange/Tange-road-tubing-I.jpg

As you can see the old Prestige came in several different forms. The
current Prestige only in one with an "Ultimate" tubing be the lightest/

Hi Kip. Funny but I just put a sun tour xc pro on one bike. It was in
pristine condition given the age. It works fine, the action is a
little tight compared to my other ones (a deore, a late 90s xt, early
90s xt). It should work fine, I'm using six or seven speed for me.

Funny about the deore xt for sale, didn't realize the demand for
those.

[RBW] Re: 2011 Bombadil Revealed!

2011-04-05 Thread Marty
Roy - the bolts are simply another pair of locations to attach things
- like a Mark's rack for instance. Well, that and to win the "my bike
has more braze-ons than yours" argument. I don't have a scale close at
hand, but they have one at the bike shop across the street. If I have
a chance Saturday, I'll let you know. It really doesn't feel heavy -
the '83 Stumpjumper in some of the photos is a boat anchor by
comparison.

Thanks. Do you know if the new Prestige is still thinwall heat treated? My
1991 Specialized Stumpjumper Team was the old Prestige and it was a very
nice frame indeed; I don't remember hearing of any weight limit -- my

up similar frames.

I ride it pretty much every day, in all weather, for commuting,
touring, and just getting around.  I love it, it's great fun to ride
and it fits me better than any other bike I've ever ridden.

Re: [RBW] Re: VO Wingnuts

2011-04-05 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Wingnuts of various designs were the standard race and upscale attachment
device until Tulio had his epiphany on the alps and, as they lasted so long
they must have worked. I think they were used with chain tugs, though. I
wanted to try some without the tugs and bought a handful (not the VOs) but
found that the threading was too small for the standard track axle.

I'd love to try a pair of VOs, but not, I repeat not, at $45 a pair.

I'm also a lurker. I haven't posted simply because I've not much to
say, but this thread is bringing me out of the shadows (if only
briefly)...

Here is a picture of my AHH... http://www.flickr.com/photos/jcaddick/5587292295/

At one year old, this bike has been pure joy for me to ride. Before
AHH I was primarily a commuter/utility cyclist - riding my mid-90s
Rocky Mountain Fusion mountain bike. Since AHH, I've joined a casual
bicycle club (riding most Sundays anywhere from 60-90 km), ridden the
100 km route in two populaires, ridden 122 km in the Whistler
GranFondo, and commuted to work and around town. I ♥ my AHH!

My favourite comment this weekend from a man walking on the street was
"That's the first Rivendell I've seen in this town," to which I
replied "there are a few." There are quite a few, actually, but the
sight of one is still rare enough for those who know a Rivendell to
get excited.

Re: [RBW] Which retro derailleur for a Bombadil?

2011-04-05 Thread PATRICK MOORE
In my rather limited experience, modern Shimano rds are hard to beat for
long cage rds. The LX that I swapped out for a 15 year old (at least) XT
shifted much better than the XT (but I didn't like the reverse action) and
the XT shifts better than the various SunTours that I used. If a modern rd
shifts as well as that LX, it will shift wonderfully, even over bastard
cassettes made from out-of-series cogs, via Silver bar end shifters.

[RBW] Re: Which retro derailleur for a Bombadil?

2011-04-05 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Kip:

Personally I love the '85 Suntour XC derailleurs and shifters...
Overbuilt, bombproof, and they look awesome. I also love the older
Deore "deerhead" derailleurs and the brushed aluminum friction
shifters... equally fine; I own sets of each. For my Bomba, I use a
1998 Shimano XTR m951 (low normal) derailleur with the built-in
rollamajiggy, and I use friction/indexed Deore thumbies (from the late
80s). I run a 7-speed touring cassette on a Phil Wood freewheel hub.
This setup (except for the low normal) is near perfect. (Also, the
brake levers from this era were unmatched). Here are a few pics:
Shifters: http://tinyurl.com/3kyxtfu, Brake Levers: http://tinyurl.com/3m3n9w6

Bottom line: Shimano stuff (through much of the 90s) remained good,
but there's nothing that compares to that mid-late-80s stuff... It was
built so amazingly well.

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Soma/Riv Bike

2011-04-05 Thread William
I don't believe anybody is handwringing over whatever their front end
format is. Both threaded and threadless work and work well. bfd's
assertion was that more Soma San Marcos framesets would be sold if it
were spec'd with a 1" threadless fork, because threadless is
mainstream even though 1" threadless is not mainstream. I don't think
there are many potential buyers who would tell you that 1" threadless
is their first choice. The point that bfd didn't make was that from a
business standpoint, if I was Merry Sales, and if I wanted to keep the
price as low as possible, I'd seriously consider offering only one
fork for all sizes and drop the price of the frameset. That, I think,
would generate more sales, and could only be done with...wait for
it...threadless. There's already a precedent for one fork rake across
lots of sizes for the budget Rivendell frames. If Soma wanted to
offer the San Marcos at a lower price, and wanted to get there with a
threadless fork, then I could definitely believe that might yield more
sales. I doubt there are a lot of buyers who say "this frameset right
here is perfect for me, but I don't like the headset type so I won't
buy it". They'll disqualify on price, weight, fit, even color, but
headset? I don't think so. I could be wrong.

FWIW, I've had all the headset formats and all of them worked fine,
including 1-1/4" threaded and 1" threadless. When it comes down to
looks and how nervous you are about crotchal safety, I'd say we're
into the unimportant differentiators.

[RBW] Re: Soma/Riv Bike

2011-04-05 Thread EricP
Don't know the answers, but from what I can gather, present Prestige
has little to no relation to the old Prestige tubing. That was light,
heat treated tubing that had some serious restrictions on it for frame
builders. (This is all from 25 year old memories, so take with a grain
of salt.) If remembering correctly, the old Prestige actually had a
weight limit for riders. Never threw a leg over a bike built by one
for that reason.

Even though today's Prestige doesn't have that weight limit, still
won't buy a bike built with it. Mental block on my part.

[RBW] Re: Riding the Atlantis

2011-04-05 Thread doug peterson
Khalid:

I've been touring with my Atlantis since 03 & have loaded it in a
variety of ways. For me, weight in the front is helpful. All the
weight in the back didn't work. Splitting the load into 4 bags &
using front low riders is stable. After trying different things over
the years, I prefer about 60% in the front, 40% rear for the maxxed
out camping load. For a lodging tour, I just use front low riders. I
always have an Acorn Boxy Rando bag on & it holds a lot of stuff by
itself.

Get good stiff racks, Nitto, Tubus, Bruce Gordon, etc. Cheap racks
will drive you crazy with 20 lbs of weight on them. Experiment with
your own load on your bike to see what works for you. IMHO it's as
much about your riding style as where the load is placed. Among my
touring buds, some prefer front, some prefer rear, some don't care.
It's quite individual.

It should work fine. Although, I was just thinking today that I've
never had a better shifting derailleur than the Deore LX on my Bleriot

is so smooth and requires absolutely no thought to get it in the
correct gear... (perfect for my brain!). I just stumbled onto an Ebay
auction for them with a buy it now of $20...search SHIMANO DEORE LX RD-
T661... and bought one for my Rambouilllet...GOOD BYE reverse action!
No idea who the seller is, or if it will show up, but it looks legit.

[RBW] Which retro derailleur for a Bombadil?

2011-04-05 Thread Kip Otteson
Just curious about your opinions. I've looked a little on eBay and
I've found many Suntour XC Pro and XC Expert derailleurs and thumb
shifters there. By many I mean 5 or so. I remember back in the day,
1988/89, that friends that were really into mountain biking loved the
Suntour stuff. I currently have a Nooodle bar on the Bombadil and am
thinking about moving my current dirt drop bar setup to my wife's
Heron and going with a Bullmoose Bar. I'd put the thumb shifters on
the new set up and get rid of my squeaky Deore derailleur in the
process. I saw the XT rear for sale on the list and I'd buy it today,
but I was wondering what you guys/gals thought? I want to get a 7
speed rear wheel built up by Riv so that would be the wheel it would

would it work if I just use friction mode?

Thanks for your insight and opinions.

Re: [RBW] Re: Soma/Riv Bike

2011-04-05 Thread cyclotourist
I've come to appreciate threadless. The ease of setting them is
fantastic. If I were going to get a new bike, I would prefer it. I
don't know of any downside to them, other than they don't look good
with high bars on a too-small frame. I think they look nicer than the
big "7" of a quill stem sticking way up there though. Plus I don't
like a big hung of pointy steel aimed at my genitals when I'm trail
riding. As bfd mentioned, once you have the position set, presuming
you don't cut the steerer you have lots of adjustability. You have to
get a new stem to adjust for reach, but you have to do that with a
quill stem as well. And the open face plate for bar changes is
wonderful, although used rarely.

But the Roadeo can be ordered with a threadless stem:
http://www.adventurecorps.com/corpscamp/2010/dvshow2/images/DSC03393.jpg

You can also get Rivendell Custom bikes with threadless stems too:
http://assets.rivbike.com/images/products/full//2715/rc7.jpg

Finally, more than one staffer at Riv uses threadless:

Vaughn:
http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/staff-bikes/50-998

and of course, both of Mark's bikes have them too:

Why not? If you offer things familiar to what people want, it will
sell. Further, Riv does offer or once offered a threadless version on
at least a couple of its bikes:

Roadeo:
http://assets.rivbike.com/images/products/full//3108/mark_s_roadeo.jpg

Legolas (currently not offered):
http://tandemhearts.com/coppermine/albums/legolas/legolas_03.jpg

And I'm sure there are more than one Riv Custom frameset that use
threadless.

I'm not the only one who likes threadless. One of the original
"retrogrouches" himself, Jobst Brandt (hope he recovers from his
accident soon!) believes they are an *improvement* over threaded
headsets and quill stems:

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/threadless-headset.html

I didn't just suggest 1.125" threadless, as I did state that 1"
threadless with a shim could be an option. Further, how many people
really adjust their stems up and down once they've been set? Moreover,
unless you cut the steerer tube too short, spacers can be added or
removed. Finally, there are stems that rise.

Again, these are just suggestion to *attract* people to this new
frameset. Good Luck!

[RBW] bicycle camping on Catalina Island?

2011-04-05 Thread Aaron Thomas
Has anyone done it? Would you recommend it? Any special considerations or
logistical things to take into account? Can anyone point me to useful
resources or websites? A simple Google search produced hundreds of hits --
not sure where to begin.

I'm thinking bike camping on Catalina might make a nice weekend getaway from
LA, but I've never done any bike camping, S240-style or otherwise. Where to
begin? Recommendations for the neophyte welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Does anyone know how much it will cost? And, second, what current or recent
Rivendell model will this most closely approximate? Tange Prestige: I
remember when that was really high end stuff, at least in the marketing

your fingernail, unlike the dull "thud" of lesser steels.

I have no experience with the Atlantis, but it's certainly on my
bucket list. If anyone has a used 62-4 frame in any condition; I'm
interested.

That said, I agree with Jim, that it is easy to overstate this front
vs rear loading thing. In 30+ years of riding I haven't found all
that much difference. I have tried to add weight to the front end of
too quick bikes, but it did not help or hurt handling.

I have a strong preference for carrying as much stuff as possible
above my fenders so prefer HB bags and even large (Nelson LF) saddle
bags. I know I can get enough weight - like computers and stuff - into
a saddle bag to noticeably affect handling, but I tend to prefer that
to arriving home with muddy panniers.

For the best answers to this, I would search back through the archives - I
know there have been several threads on loading the Atlantis (and other Riv
models). I don't have ready access to a specific search, but it should be
pretty findable.

Regarding the design, I'm not at all sure that I agree with the base
assumption. While certainly there are bicycle design choices that favor
handling with heavy front loads, there are enough riders who balance load or
front load their Rivendells to demonstrate the flexibility of the RBW
models. Carrying cargo on the front end of a bike is one thing, putting
food and some gear in a rando bag is another.

Personally, of late I've been flipping back and forth between the Hilsen
(Country Bag aft) and the Quickbeam (L'il Loafer-ized currently, but often
with a small rando bag near the bow), and find it more of a correction to go
to the Hilsen than back to the 'Beam. And then a couple miles go by and
I'm watching hawks and enjoying the ride... ;^)

2011-04-05 Thread Lisa
OK, I'll come out and join the delurkers. Here (http://tinyurl.com/
3wnmv8b) is a picture of my 47 cm Atlantis parked in my office. Peter
White built it up for me last summer. It was his last in-stock
Atlantis frame.

I ride it pretty much every day, in all weather, for commuting,
touring, and just getting around. I love it, it's great fun to ride
and it fits me better than any other bike I've ever ridden.

[RBW] Re: Laken aluminum watter bottles rattle in cages?

2011-04-05 Thread George Schick
Can't speak for the Laken specifically, but I had the same rattle
problem with bottle cages (Nitto 'R', Blackburn, Specialized, you-name-
it) with Klean Kanteen bottles. I found these
http://www.logocoolies.com/bottle-bag-insulator.php laying around the
house - they're vendor give-away insulators and they work perfectly.
Not only do they cinch up tightly around the bottle neck and keep the
bottle from rattling, but they also make the bottle fit the cage more
snugly - less likely to bounce out.

I think it is a generational thing. I've always referred to my
significant others as 'the girl' (regardless of age) and I've always

by them as 'the boy'.

I don't think of it as diminutive or derisive at all.

I think of it as a shortening of something like 'the girl in question'.

Speaking of the term "the wife," is it anything like "the hubby?"
which in places like Yelp you'll find quite often, which seems more to
be a kind of post-feminist Gen-Y thing.

What male cyclist with a female partner doesn't want to get her more
into cycling? Making a place more inclusive, either online, or at the

I've tried the VO Classic, the VO Moderniste and King cages with
varying degrees of success in securing my Kleen Canteens. The
Modernistes seem to be the weekest and require a squeeze every now and
again to hold the canteens quietly. The King cages work the best for
me.

[RBW] Re: Laken aluminum watter bottles rattle in cages?

2011-04-05 Thread EricP
Another vote for the King Iris. Have them on my Sam Hillborne.

Luckily, my LBS (Hiawatha Cyclery) usually has them in stock.

The inexpensive Planet Bike cages seem to do a good job of holding
Kleen Kanteen bottles without excess noise.
