[RBW] WTB Wanted to Buy: Rivendell Nitto Mark's Rack / M-18 front rack

2011-08-02 Thread the ill postino

Hi all,

A long shot, I know, but my new-to-me Homer (hope to post pics soon!) needs
a front rack. Does any one have a used Mark's Rack (or the similar M18
rack) they'd be willing to sell?

If so, please let me know your asking price plus shipping to Chicago.

I'm happy to just buy the rack, but for anyone interested in trades I have a
few Riv-ish items I could factor in:

- front and rear set of silver Tektro CR720 Cantilevers
- Shimano 9 speed downtube shifters (Dura Ace 7700 9 Speed Bar end lever set
without the bar end pods -- could also be used with Paul Thumbies or IRD /
Velo Orange thumb shifter mounts).
- Dia-Compe Mod 750 (62-78mm reach) center pull brakes, including Surly
stainless steel rear cable hanger and Problem Solvers front clamp on cable
hanger.
- DD Oberlauda German Mirror opened but unused in box.
- Nitto Albatross Aluminum bar, 25.4 clamp

Thanks!

Nate

I'm on the hills, near the BART station. Actually nearly at the top of the
tallest hill, which often necessitates a trip in the car to bring the bike
to more suitable riding areas.

I've been confined to the neighborhood previously, but have now ventured out
with a short trip with the bike rack.

2011-08-02 Thread Philip Williamson
Flared drops in the dirt work great, even with a front shock. I know
Grant disprefers them, but I think there's a market for Nitto-produced
Cunningham bars. And matching tall stems. I've got the vintage WTBs on
the Quickbeam, and they're different (better) than the Midge bars on
the Bontrager hardtail and the Woodchippers on the Gary Fisher
Utopia.

I like the hoods for climbing, and the ends for leverage, and I would
rather be tucked into the drops on a gravel descent than hanging onto
flat bars. Flat bars are fine, and I rode them for years, but I love
love love the drops in the dirt.

A Bombadil with a painted half-lugged stem and drops would be a real
treat.
And a two-tone Type II fork (http://stevepottsbicycles.blogspot.com/

Newbaum's tape all around, but yet to be installed on the QB.

 perhaps a Hunqa or Bomba.

I really liked the drops and had no real handicap in using them off road -
the brake hoods were like the old bar-ends I used to have on my flat bar.  I
did a lot of bouncing around on rocks, and never lost grip, and the brakes
were fine from the hoods as far as power went.

The bar-end shifting was not ideal, but really only because shifting
bar-ends on mtb trails is a bit slow for the rapid changes you can need.  I
wound up realizing that for the most part, I only needed a low gear, as when
I was going downhill, it was technical enough I could gain great speed by
coasting until I got to another steep up.  Could probably do most of the
trail on a single speed - maybe a 32x21.  When I was too low, I put too much
torque into the back wheel, and could spin it on the wood ramps.

I guess the thing is that the setup actually worked quite well, and I really
went into it expecting a major fail due to wrong equipment.

look at some of my photos, and you'll see that with 29 tires you end up

descending straighter lines, well, that's pretty damn magical--the riv

I now have more impetus for reinstalling my rear fender!

Sunday afternoon, I took my son and younger daughter up to ride the Creeper
Trail.   Alex and I have ridden it several times, usually starting in
Damascus, then riding up and back down.   However, as this was Abby's first
time riding it, I decided to 'treat' her to taking a shuttle up from
Damascus to Whitetop.  It essentially becomes a 17-mile downhill coast doing
it that way.   It had been a beautiful weekend thus far, radar was clear, no
fronts coming through, so off we went.

We arrived in Damascus, and literally caught a shuttle at Blue Blaze a
minute before it was going to depart.  I had shotgun in the van on the way
up;  the driver remarked that it was odd to see a 'road bike' on the Creeper
(I was on my Ram, my son on his Motobecane CX bike).  The driver and I were
chatting about trips out west, folks we knew in common, etc.  As we were
between Konnarock and the turn to Green Cove, he shouted Bear!, as a lanky
yearling black bear ran across the road in front of us, crossed the
guardrail in a single stride, then disappeared into the rhododendron down
 below.

At Whitetop, we started rolling down the trail at a decent clip, enjoying
the scenery. However, the beautiful clear sky started showing signs of
afternoon summer 'boil-up' storms.  It started sprinkling a bit, just as we
reached Green Cove.  The rangers there were doing a use-survey, so we
stopped for a couple of minutes to chat with them, which allowed it to clear
up, too.  We then departed there, and continued on.

A couple of miles or so out of there, though, it began to rain again, this
time in earnest.  However, by that point, there was nothing for it, but to
press on.   At first, it wasn't a bad rain, and the trees along the trail
were sheltering us from a lot of it, but we were getting drip-thu's.  But it
continued to increase in rate.  Didn't take long until we were soaked
through and through.   Then, I heard lighting.  Rain, doesn't bother me too
bad, just not particularly comfortable perhaps, but, I respect lightning.
However, we were still miles away from Taylor's Valley, and there was
nothing anywhere between us and it that would be of any use shelter-wise.
As much as I hated to, we continued to roll on.   Thankfully, the storm
wasn't 'on top' of us, we would hear thunder at a distance about every 15
minutes.   If it had come up before Green Cove, we'd have stayed put there,
but we were half way to Taylors Valley before it came upon us.    I was
hoping we'd be okay, then take shelter when we got to the cover there.

By the time we reached Taylor's Valley, though, the storm was mostly passed,
and the rain tailing off.   We no longer heard lightning, and it was a
gentle sprinkle left.  Of course, the trail was soaked now, and the rest of
the ride was simply rooster-tailing all over us.  As I'd removed my rear
fender when we'd been out on the OBX, and hadn't reinstalled it yet, I only
had my front fender on.    Before yesterday, the times I'd been riding, my
saddlebag had caught the brunt of any spray, keeping me clean, so I'd not
fretted over it too much at that point.   However, seeing the black streak
up across my Acorn, on the back of my Brooks, and up my back... my rear
fender's going back on this week.  Alex and I stripped our shirts off before
getting into the truck;  I had a jacket in there, wrapped Abby up in it
before getting her into the back seat, trying to reduce the amount of
cleaning I'd have to do later.

This evening, I'll have to strip my bike down and really clean it well, and
the kids', too (their bikes! they showered the grit out of their hair as
 soon as we were home).

I wish I'd taken pictures; I'd planned to along the way, but after it
started raining as hard as it did, the camera was forgotten, really...

On the way home, I was asking them if they enjoyed the trip even though it
rained.  Alex said he was having a ball the entire time;  Abby was a bit
more coy, said she had fun until it started raining;  later, she amended it,
that she had fun even in the rain, but that she stopped when she realized
how muddy she was getting.   However, after getting out of the shower and
into clean clothes, she finally admitted that she was having fun in the mud,
 too.

Aside from my bike, I think I need to get fenders for their bikes, too

 Good, wet, filthy, fun ride.

2011-08-02 Thread islaysteve
That's a beautiful gesture. The first question would be, what size is the
frame? You can measure from the center of the crank, up the seat tube to
the top. This is usually given in centimeters, so convert if you measure in
inches. Pictures would be helpful. If you have a flickr account or Picassa
account (in Google), post pictures there and copy a link into a post here.
It's easy to start a Picassa account if you don't have one. Pictures will
probably answer most of the questions people will have. Take shots of the
whole bike from the side, and some closeups of the handlebar setup, wheels,
crank, etc. People may also want to know what year the bike was purchased.
Best of luck to you, Steve

Re: [RBW] Recomended paths to ride around RBWHQ and surrounding areas?

2011-08-02 Thread Joe Bunik
Imagonna start mapping some of my favorite rides/routes around the
area, and eventually take some photos along the way too.

Besides what Dustin said, there are a good number of classic road
routes that loop around here, e.g. 'Three Bears' out beyond Briones
and Orinda, 'Carquinez/McEwen' via Martinez, 'Redwood' via
Moraga/Canyon/Pinehurst, and 'The Country Clubs' route which traverses
several fairways down towards Danville.

For dirt and fire trails, you can't beat Shell Ridge open space, and
adjacent Diablo Foothills regional and Mt. Diablo s.p.s. Not to be
overlooked are all the convenient, off-street connector bike/MUP
paths. The Iron Horse, CC and YV canals, and the sleeper
Sugarloaf-Shell Ridge trail.

There are many nice quiet, older roads that align with the topography
(see latest BQ) and secret (i.e. non-auto) connector paths bridging
disparate cul-de-sac neighborhoods. For a start, here's the trunk of
one of my favorite in town rambles. Begins at the landmark Heather
Farms area which is easy to get to via BART/trail, follows the edge of
the hills/open space on some of the more interesting streets, and
yields plenty of good opportunities for branching back home via dirt
or asphalt:

[RBW] Re: Soaked to the bone and happy!

2011-08-02 Thread Bill Carter
Thanks for the ride report, Leslie. It brought back happy memories
for me. The Virginia Creeper Trail was a favorite ride for me and my
family back six or seven years ago when my daughter was younger and we
rode a lot of rail trails together. It rained on us every year the
three years we went, so I know exactly what you mean by wet and
happy. The 17 mile downhill from Mt Rogers to Damascus is absolute
delight. The Appalachian Trail crosses the Creeper there in Damascus,
so there is a chance for great hiking too. There was an older
gentleman who was known as the Legend of the Creeper Trail who rode
the entire distance from Abingdon and back, around 75 miles round
trip, practically every single day. His name is Laurence Dye and was
in his mid to late seventies then, and rode a silver Litespeed
Mountain bike. I met him once as he was finishing his round trip and
got some pics made with him. I just googled him, and apparently he's
still at it:

http://www.vacreepertrail.org/ride-legend

It sounds like you enjoyed the ride as much as we did. I would highly
recommend it.

[RBW] S36O Minnesota to Wisconsin

2011-08-02 Thread EricP
Spent the weekend riding with a bunch of folks from the Twin Cities
(Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota) over to Dave's Brewfarm in
Wilson, Wisconsin for overnight camping/party. Besides my Sam
Hillborne, list member Shaun M. was on his 68cm Atlantis. All in all
there were about 20 bikes. Everything from go-fast bikes to Jim
Thill's frankentandem to a really fast rider on a Salsa Mukluk(!)
Round trip was between 110 and 120 miles. Actual speed was quite
modest for some of us. Both to savor the scenery and because it was
hot and (extremely) humid both days.

Most riders took advantage of friends driving over or the official sag
wagon to haul camping gear and extra food. To say we ate like royalty
at the destination is an understatement. Oh, and yes, there was quite
a bit of excellent beer to be had as well. At least for those of us
who do not mind imbibing in that liquid.

One of the highlights for myself was sitting around with some other
folks and playing music. Didn't bring an instrument along, but one of
the other musicians let me use both her guitar and ukulele. We were
able to jam on a couple of tunes. Believe me, playing a solo on an
unfamiliar tune on a ukulele is not easy. Great fun, though. And she
did a nice job of backup on banjo while I flatpicked a couple of tunes
that were not familiar to her.

Also want to give a public thanks to Grant. In an e-mail exchange a
little while ago he recommended the Eureka Spitfire tent. This was my
first experience with it and it's a winner. Lots of room to hold me
and gear and still room to stretch out or sit up. Easiest clothing
change in a tent I've had in ages. And the tent withstood the storm
that developed that evening. Again, great tent.

Agreed. He was originally asking for $2000, which is perhaps a bit
high given that you can get a complete bike sans saddle and pedals for

try to get rid of it pretty quickly by selling it for a low price.

Yesterday I tackled what was for me a challenging route. I've almost made
it up to Oak Glen http://www.oakglen.net/ before, but always abandoned

4,000 ft of climbing in it. Yesterday I got out a bit late and it was
heating up already, but in the end made it to the
summithttp://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/5991339353/in/photostream!
Before that, back about two miles in the town I treated myself to chips
salsa, a

a fantastic taco. Reaching the little Mexican restaurant up there was
always something I looked forward to, and finally made it! Total time was
five hours, including a relaxed lunch stop.

Roadside photos here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/archives/date-taken/2011/07/30/
Lots of bike photo-opps as I was stopping what seemed like every 10 minutes
to rest in the shade!

When I got back home I think I was the most tired I've ever been from a
ride. I can usually ride 60ish (100K) w/out any problems, but this 37 mile
ride kicked my butt. I just dragged all day, arms and legs were totally
noodly. Took a late afternoon nap and still went to bed early! Today no
aches or stiffness which is great! Might get out for a little ride this
morning if I play my cards right. FWIW it's actually drizzling this
morning. Weird summer, but I love it!

Re: [RBW] Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread Horace
I noticed this about large frames too. I ride a 59cm with the bars a couple
inches below saddle height; the reach to DT shifters is about the same as
it is for bar ends. So I prefer them on the downtube (7-speed friction and
9-speed indexed).

2011-08-02 Thread John Speare
I like indexed DT 8 speed shifting on my commuter and my long distance bike.
I guess I actually love it.

I'm generally moving towards indexing on most of my bikes:
-- trails bike (Rawland dSogn) has 8 speed brifters -- which I love for
technical climbing.
-- CX (RB-T) bike has single 8 speed brifter
-- mountain bike is indexed.

Until now, I didn't realize that I'd made such a transformation. I must say
though, that I do miss the feel of Suntour barcons, which I used to run
nearly exclusively on all drop-bar bikes.

My move to the dark side of indexing stated with the DT shifters though,
which index beautifully since there's only one loop in the housing.

Re: [RBW] Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread René Sterental
I just put the DuraAce 9 speed downtube shifters on my 58 Hunqa. I run the
rear one on indexed mode and I actually like them a lot. Reach is not too
bad although I usually find myself coasting while I shift since I have to
remove one hand from the handlebar. At this time, I'd be hard pressed to say
if I prefer them on the downtube or on the stem quill as I have them on the
Atlantis right now: *http://tinyurl.com/3l9oxn5*

I don't think that if I was running Noodles or equivalent I'd put them on
the downtube but now the Homer is my only remaining bike with that setup and
I haven't ridden it in a while.

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread Roger
I ride a 65cm, and the downtube shifters are right in the arcswing of
my arm if I bend my other elbow just a bit to lower myself. If one's
arm doesn't swing to the dt shifters, I wouldn't recommend using them
no matter what height they are. It may have to do with leg/torso/arm
proportions, but I don't think it's intrinsic to being tall.

I think it's a losing battle to ever encourage someone to switch to
dt's. Probably most new users in this era will be self-motivators who
will try it on their own, and some will stick with it. I like it
really well, but no one was gonna tell me to use such an elegantly
simple way to shift.

The only time that dt's make one's life demonstrably better is while
experimenting with stems and bars.

Downtube friction. I guess I am a diehard, I used Shimano STI first and then
Campy Ergo during the decade I raced, but after I stopped in 2000 I went back
to downtube friction shifting. It's just what I prefer, I suppose because
that's what I grew up with. I don't like all those cables going to the
handlebars.

I have STI on our tandem, downtubers would be difficult as the braze-ons would
have to be brazed on and I don't feel like ruining the paint. Besides, it's not
like I am out there saying jeez, I HATE STI, why aren't their downtube
shifters on this bike?!? STI doesn't ruin the ride for me.

It's a bike, not a fetish. Or at least it ought to be.

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread velomann
The first real road bike I owned (Bianchi Limited, 1986-ish) had
downtube shifters and I've always had at least one bike so equipped
since then. In my long range plans for a custom rando bike, it will
have downtube shifters. My daily commuter has friction DT shifters, as
does my Trek 560. I also have bikes with thumb shifters, a Bontrager
mtb with grip-shifts (hate those but haven't taken the time to convert
yet), and a cross bike with brifters - whose only advantage I can see
is when I race I really can shift quicker. But those buggers are sure
expensive to replace and I hate components I can't service myself.
Strangely, the only thing I don't currently have running is bar-ends,
but that's going to change when I get the dirt-drops on the 91 MB
2 ;-)

As others have said - though maybe not here, one advantage to DT
shifters (besides simplicity) is that on longer rides you regularly
take you hands (or one hand at least) off the bars. This helps relieve
pressure and fatigue, I think.

And maybe it's how I was programed when I formed my love for the
bicycle, but I prefer the look of a steel road bike w/DT shifters to
the look of any other bike.

Not quite sure about that; it's not like every single RBW-bike rider is a
member here; or if even half are. (A quarter? At best?)

I'll wholly agree:  it's quite possible it's legit (and I hope it is);
but, you would think someone who would spend that kind of money on a bike
would know enough about it to know if it's an antique or not.

Could be, the seller told the current owner was told it was an antique, and
that it was worth that much, and went with it

There aren't a large number of Riv dealers, other than RBW directly.
Harris in Boston, Country Bike in Ohio, Hiawatha in Minneapolis, And MSL in
Bristol, are the only ones on this side of the Mississippi, and I've not
seen any Betty's come through MSL (doesn't mean that they haven't had one
come through, I'm not there *that* often, but to date, I've seen Atlantis,
Rambouillet, Hilsen, and Hillborne frames there).

Maybe, if someone at one of those shops has a record of who bought that
frame (if it wasn't from Riv directly), could call the original buyer, just
to see if they did let it go, as a courtesy call maybe?

Given that we know nothing, it's perfectly plausible that it's stolen.

[RBW] Strange Weather

2011-08-02 Thread George Schick
I live in the Chicago metro area, but I like to listen to KCSM via
streaming audio. Recently the program hosts have been making a lot of
unusual remarks about the weather out there, like, I'm glad Summer is
finally here. ?? What's up with that? It's the first of August!
Has it been an unusually cool, wet season thus far in the Bay Area?

Just curious

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread charlie
I enjoy down tube levers also and grew up riding themnot quite as
convenient but having to stretch down slightly keeps me from
obsessively shifting. Since I built my first single (actually two)
speed, I've gone from a 8 to a 7 speed drive train on my derailleur
bicycle and will probably remove my triple crank and go with a 46x30
double. I'm just finding I don't need so many gear ratios which makes
me wonder about my first old ten speed. I think those early derailleur
bicycles with 4 and 5 rear cogs were pretty cool too.

that's what I grew up with.  I don't like all those cables going to the

I have STI on our tandem, downtubers would be difficult as the braze-ons

it's not like I am out there saying jeez, I HATE STI, why aren't their

Dowtubers are great for double shifts, too, wherein you want to get a rear
upshift with a front downshift at the same time so the cadence change isn't so
drastic. Get ahold of both shifters with one hand and push forward. Sweet.

Hi René,

Thanks!

To answer your question, the Brooks Imperial is actually my very first
Brooks saddle. Before test riding bikes at Riv HQ, I also took my wife's
Betty Foy around the block a few times to get a feel for her Brooks womens
B17. I know the saddle dimensions are a bit different than the mens B17,
but at least riding on it gave me some idea as to how the saddle might
give and feel to my sit bones after its break-in period. I liked what I
felt, both on her womens B17, as well as on the mens B17s on the Riv demo
bikes.

On my first couple of rides on the Hunq, the saddle did feel a bit hard but
not objectionably so. I rubbed one coat of Proofide on it after the second
ride. I'm happy to report that after about the sixth ride or so, the saddle
began to give and I'm now feeling pretty comfortable. I'm confident that
after a few more rides, this saddle is going to be wonderful. I can't
really say whether the slot is doing the trick in keeping pressure off my
perineum, or if it's more a function of the Brooks saddle design and shape.
All I know is that I'm not feeling the familiar numbing in the crotch
area...so I'm very pleased. =)

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread bicyclebill
This will probably get me a lot of flack but please keep in mind that
one of my non-RBW bike is a Claud Butler, so I'm no enemy of
tradition. Having said that, I believe that each generation of
shifters has represented evolution and that the state of the art has
improved. My Butler originally had Campy downtube shifters and, aside
from the question of reach, they were extremely vague and had a mind
of their own about shifting. Before you get on me about adjustments,
please know that in addition to my own efforts these were adjusted by
very experienced mechanics including those at my LBS, Harris Cyclery.

I then went to Campy bar ends and found the position much better but
the shifting equally vague. From there to Sun Tour bar ends and a
whole new world! Using them in friction mode (I've never tried them
in indexed mode), these are still my favorites. For a couple of
years, I had a Cannondale touring bike with Shimano STI brifters and I
have to say they were a pleasure. I spend most of my time on the tops
and on the hoods and the STI's were convenient, effective and very
reliable. While the STI indexing worked flawlessly, I still prefer
friction and have thus resorted to bar ends on both the Butler (Sun
Tour) and my Bleriot (Shimano).

I've heard the arguments that if you're in Katmandu and your STI's
break down, who's going to fix them. Since the next time I'm in
Katmandu will be the first time, that's a bridge I'm willing to cross
later!

In the interest of full disclosure, I also have a Cervelo Soloist with
Dure Ace STI shifters but that's a completely different story!

On Aug 2, 2:31 pm, Roger rogerdhod...@gmail.com wrote:

no matter what height they are.

I ride a ~67 cm frame and the reach to DT shifters is insane, making me

barend shifters.  I'm curious if this is true for other tall riders.

[RBW] Re: WTB Wanted to Buy: Rivendell Nitto Mark's Rack / M-18 front rack

2011-08-02 Thread the ill postino
Small update: I had the model number wrong on those shifters I listed as a
possible partial trade for a Mark's rack. They are the Shimano SL-BS77 bar
end shifters, without the bar end pods as stated above. So they are usable
as DT shifters, but the levers are not the same shape as the 7700s.

I also found some other shifters in the parts drawer:
- a pair of scratched but functional Shimano bar end shifters / barcons
labeled SL-BS50. I think these are technically 7 speed shifters, though
the rear appears to have an 8th click (and/or it can be set to friction.)
- some lovely Shimano SL-M700 (Deerhead group I believe) ratcheting friction
thumb shifters.

And, as long as I'm updating, I might as well mention an even longer-shot
request than the Nitto front rack: I'm also looking for a medium olive
Sackville Shopsack. RBW is out of stock.

Thanks again,

Nate

 Michael,

Not sure where you are located, but if you share your location,
someone on the list may be able to meet you and help you with the
intricacies of sizing the bike and taking some pictures. The folks
here are more interested about bikes selling at a fair price then in
absolute bargains. And for a good cause i'm sure someone would be
 willing to help.

Help me sell this for her. Please contact me for information and

I'll try. It has been suggested I sell it for $2500.

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread jeffrey kane
Well, I ride a 54, so I'm def. on the small side. I've been using bar
end shifters but am looking to switch to DT's. Travel break down,
shorter cables, less cable housing, etc. are the motivation for me.
Anyone looking to move a pair of Dura Ace SL7700's (the straight lever
DT specific 9 speed type) please let me know and I'll snatch 'em up
asap!

Interesting question.  I'm also curious how much frame size has to do with
 DT shifter preferences.

I ride a ~67 cm frame and the reach to DT shifters is insane, making me
uncomfortable using them. For this reason I have a strong preference for
barend shifters.  I'm curious if this is true for other tall riders.

I went the opposite way. I used dt friction shifters for over 15 years.
Used mostly Campy dt shifters - record, c-record and mavic retrofriction
shifters shifting 7 and 9 speeds. Never had any problems.

Then I tried Campy ergo shifters and became a convert!! Love the shifters
and now have it on my two road bikes. Good Luck!

I had to do something to beat the heat!!!  I think the heat make it extra

was a BLAST!  Three hours up (one hour kicking back), a half hour to get
 home!

Map's on Bikely, although Bikely.com is not loading for me for some
 reason...  http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Oak-Glen-from-Redlands
Might have to start using mapmyride although I don't like their site as
 much...
