[RBW] Q-Factor and 52 Year Old Knees
Micheal said, I have a Campy Centaur square taper with the 110 BB with a 39t ring on the outside that works for me. I have a Phil rear hub with the Dos Eno 16/19 on one side, and a 18t cog fixed on the other side. My 52 year old knees are sensitive sensitive to Q, and this works just fine. Micheal and others, could you talk about this subject? While I was doing some work on my riv's, I was commuting on my Friday and developed really stiff knees. I have one knee that's a bit gravelly under the kneecap, and it's particularly susceptible to stiffness and swelling on vigorous hikes. Normally, though, bicycling has not given it trouble. Anyway, could the q-factor of the Friday have set this off? (It's set up as a 1x8.) May I add that I am not yet geeky enough to say right off the bat what all my Q-factors are--but here's my learning opportunity, eh? Here's my first attempt at getting knowledgeable: My main rides are regular old Saluki/Protobleriot bottom brackets both with Sugino 165 cranks. The Saluki has a triple up front and a riv-installed regular 8-speed cassette. The Proto has a single chain-ring up front and an ENO hub with a DOS. Can't say without looking it up at home what bottom bracket is on either. Neither gives me knee problems as long as I don't ride in too high a gear. Don't think I was riding in a tall gear on the Friday... Re: [RBW] Q-Factor and 52 Year Old Knees
You can measure Q or tread by aligning each crankarm sequentially with the down tube and measuring carefully from outside of the arm to the edge of the down tube. Add the measurements and then add the width of the down tube to get total Q. (Or, just stick a good stiff ruler between the spokes of the rear wheel with the 0 mark at the edge of top of one crankarm, then, carefully holding the ruler still, rotate the cranks backward until the other arm comes to rest on top of the ruler. Then mark the spot where the outside of that arm falls -- that will be the Q measurement. All that said, if your two bikes haven't caused knee problems in the past, I would assume that the Q of those bikes is not the cause of your recent stiffness; were you pushing against a wind, or up hills, or carrying heavy loads? My 56 year old knees are (thank God) pretty forgiving and accept Qs as low as 130 (they don't like the even lower Qs of, say, Raleigh Sportses) and as high as 160 (but no more), but I have to beware of pushing too hard, too far, seated in too high a gear -- something I'm prone to do as I ride fixed a great deal. (I stand when I have to and get used to standing and pedaling slowly for longer distances.) [RBW] FS: 54.5cm Rivendell Atlantis Frameset
Trying to make some liquid funds, so here's my one-owner Atlantis. One of the original ones, it was built by Toyo with the fancier-than-now lugs. Built for super strong 26 wheels and braze-ons galore. It's lived a life at our other place and has always been relegated to weekend rides. No off-roading and, sadly, no loaded touring. Overall, it's in very nice condition, but some chain suck scars and a tiny ding in the top tube. There are some scuffs and scratches from storage. It should polish up very nicely. No rust. Ordered from and built by the now defunct Kenwood Cyclery, it's been FrameSavered since new. New framesets are $2000. I'm thinking $1450 OBRO shipped CONUS for frame, fork, and Tange headset. I have TONS of references should you require them. http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_front_400.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_Cockpit_400.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_bb_400.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_triangle_400.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_right_400.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_RDer_400.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_left_400.jpg http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e332/bigflax925/Bikes/Rivendell%20Atlantis/at_jf_headbadge_400.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: AHH 61 cm excellent
Greetings friends, I have a frameset I'd like to sell. It is an AHH size 61 cm and is in fantastic condition. A few pictures can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68737143@N04/ I did not include many photos as there is not much to note from its new condition. There is one small chip in the headtube lug. And one small paint nick on the left chainstay (not thru the paint) that came from a dropped tool. Those are both shown in the photos. That is about it - no chain slap, no dents, no dings, no crashes. Looks great, rides great, you'll dig it. This was treated with a couple coats of framesaver before build. Will ship in original box, or you can pick up in/near ZIP 55419. $1450 + ship for frame/fork/headset Suntour front derailleur. Note too that the other things on the bike will be for sale (brakes, rack, wheels, cockpit), but I'd like to give dibs to frame buyer. If you're interested in any you can let me know and I'll mail you after the frame goes. The wheels are XTR laced to Dyads, 32 hole front/ back. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: A tent for bike-camping???
+1 on the hiking poles and tarps. Or staked off one's bike? Tentwise, I can highly recommend Sierra Designs. I have an earlier version of this: http://www.sierradesigns.com/p-154-zolo-1.aspx which I love, and which my partner loves- she was amazed at how easy it was to set up. Simple geometry- just 3 poles: 2 long, identical ones, 1 short one. You don't need a phd in hyper-Riemannian topology to set it up. On Oct 15, 8:45 am, velomann velom...@gmail.com wrote: Lee, If you have poles - I use trekking poles when I'm backpacking, but sticks or tent poles work fine too - you can stake a tarp tent out just fine, I've done it plenty, including on te beach and at Joshua Tree. Of course, perfectly spaced trees are the ideal, but not necessary. Nor is it necessary to be able to pound stakes, so long as you can find rocks (or panniers) as anchor points. Using a tarp tent certainly involves more creativity and careful scoping of the site, but to me that's part of it's appeal, it's part of the craft of camping. here's a picture of my tarp tent staked out with sticks.https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/116897251123335733984/albums/56424... But the thing is, like making anything, there was an immense satisfaction in the process. There are imperfections (that don't affect function) but they are MY imperfections and part of the story of making My tarp tent. If one doesn't have the time/patience/sewing machine, there are several ready-made tarp tents available. If you plan to be only in a certain type of area where conditions allow you to use trees, then a tarp or other non-free standing tents are available. If you do not know what kind of condition you will be in, a tent that can be set up anywhere will be your best bet. It may be heavier but at least you know you only need a spot to put a tent up and not be restricted the conditions of the surroundings. L. There's a learning curve to setting one up, but it's not a steep curve, and getting it right gives the same sense of satisfaction as, say, successfully truing a wheel. I made my own 2-man tarp using a Ray-Way kit and am thrilled with it. Plus I made it myself, which just adds to the pleasure every time I sleep in it. It's roomy, totally dry, gets excellent airflow, and if I think I'll sleep in buggy conditions, I've got the inside net-tent with floor that attaches to the tarp. I usually hunt up sticks for pitching (or between trees works great) but have been considering getting about six 18 tent pole sections to take with me so I don't need to rely on sticks. Silicone-impregnated nylon - silnylon - s pretty amazing lightweight stuff. My roomy tarp, with titanium stakes and guylines, weighs just over a pound, and with the bugnet and stakes I'm still barely over 2, in a really small package. Like I said, not for everyone, but if you have a strong DIY ethic - or you're just cheap - it's a great way to go. An added benefit most people are not aware of is that the air circulation you get with a properly pitched tarp means less condensation inside so you actually sleep warmer than in a tent, and don't have the moisture issue to deal with when you pack up in the morning. See info here:http://www.rayjardine.com/ray-way/Tarp-Kit/index.htm btw - Ray Jardine used one of his tarp tents for his 2010 trans- america ride, the same one (I think) he used for his through hike of the Appalachian trail just before the ride. Curious why you don't like it. I've subscribed for several years (don't hoard the back issues; usually use them as impromptu trading scrip) and find it interesting enough to keep at it, but it does strongly reflect the editor's own interests -- and who can blame him? The latest issue was quite interesting, IMO. One defect is that it lacks sprightly writing: Jan writes competently but not hugely interestingly. Grant is in the opposite camp: not always right (and who can blame him?) but always interesting. Personally, I'd like to see more articles like that a year or two ago by the woman who toured India on an Indian 3d world roadster. Moving on: can anyone suggest good general purpose cycling mags, with an interest in history and in the more unusual bike tech (trikes! Jest kiddin')? RR is now a very rare bird. [RBW] FS: Ibex jacket, tent, BOB trailer
Hello All- I need funds for a project and these items are bound for ebay, but I would like to offer them up here first with Riv. friends prices. 1) Ibex Loden wool jacket, hunter green men's XL: This is a really nice medium to heavy weight, flattering, no frills wool jacket, but overlaps too much with other things in my wardrobe so I haven't worn it enough to justify keeping it. It's in very good condition. I would say like new, but I know I've worn it so I won't. It's an older version of this one: http://shop.ibex.com/Apparel/Mens-Live/M-Europa-Jacket but without the contrasting collar lining and the color is a bit more subdued. $125 +shipping 2) MSR Zoid 1 tent: This is my old bike touring tent that has been replaced by my Tarptent. It's a lightweight solo tent, not freestanding, but I used it on a cross country trip and never had any issues setting it up. I will replace the shock cording in the poles. It's been in storage for a few years so it needs some airing out. I've lost some of the stakes. There are enough to stake it out, but you might want to get a few extras. Here is a more recent iteration: http://www.backcountry.com/msr-zoid-1-1-person-3-season-tent this one has squared off ends (two stakes,) not the pointed (one stake) ends in the photos. It's a great solo tent. Easy to set up, light, airy, and it has a side entry door that I find convenient with a small vestibule for your shoes and such. $70 +shipping 3) BOB Yak single wheeled trailer This is a first edition BOB trailer from the late '90s. Attaches to the bike via a QR skewer that is included. It also has a magnet powered rear blinky that I'll leave on. It's been around the block a few times so it has a few scrapes and dings, but it's still 100% functional. I'd prefer not to ship this, but I can if someone's really interested. Photos here http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/bik/2647828108.html $150 I can email photos if folks are interested. I'm also open to reasonable offers. I'd really like to not have to do the whole ebay thing... Cheers- Mike is autumnal So. [RBW] Interested in trading a Waterford X-11
Hi All, This may be a long shot, but I've got a great Waterford X-11 that is WAY to small for me that I've been riding thanks to a steerer extension gizmo (see pic). I'd be interested in a trade for a similar quality/condition frame/fork/hs (or possibly complete bike) in a 62/3-ish cm size (I've got a 62cm rambouillet that fits well). The waterford is in excellent condition (a couple of chips near the rear dropout, a bit of chainsuck evidence, and one small scrape near the rear cable hanger) and the basic dimensions are: 56cm (C-T) seat tube 57 (C-C) top tube 1 head tube I've been using it for the local fire roads nearby - it's never been raced or crashed. Pictures are available here: http://gallery.me.com/glandwirth#100135 Respond off line if you'd like additional info or pictures. Weight 4lbs+ Last year we invested in the Big Agnes Copper Spur http://www.rei.com/product/764121/big-agnes-copper-spur-ul3-tent during REI's 20% off sale that happens to be going on now. We have used it for about 20 nights so far and here are my impressions: set up is easy with color corrdinated clips for the tent-fly interface, really light weight material that looks flimsy but has shown no wear or tear, excellent design with two doors and two vestibules vertical walls when erected, longer floor for more comfort for me but a little tight on the width (luckily I like touching my wife), plenty of room for setting up, pockets are not generous but sufficient, light weight still at 4lbs+ which is impressive to me with the extra door and vestibule, has maintained its shape well in gusty winds (estimated to 30 mph) and has kept us dry in two light rain events, a negative: the doors unzip down so that the door lays in the tent or on the ground when open. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Quest...
I have run my Quickbeam as a Double Front Double Rear. Main reason was chainlines (I care much to much about them). The way you see it in the picture below. I get perfect chainlines on the high gear/low gear/fixed gear. In addition to that I am able to switch gearing and still maintain good fender lines. However, I too can count on one hand the amount of times I switched the gearing. Did 4 brevets and one permanent on it in addition to riding for just fun and to work. I only twice switched gearing on it during a ride. Granted, those two times I enjoyed it. I am in the process of rebuilding it and will set it up with a double front again. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Quest...
I like having two rings. I've gone years without shifting, and then shifted on one ride 6 or 7 times. I prefer to have both cogs on the same side, rather than flipping the wheel. It makes gear changes take ~15 seconds, which is kind of fun. I have Surly Dingle fixed cogs in 17/21, and have been pairing them with rings 4 teeth apart on the front in various combinations (38/42 to 40/44). The stock 32/40 rings work great with this setup, too, with a nice low low gear, but the axle moves, so metal fenders and big tires can be an issue. I've used the stock crank, and an old Shimano 600 road double. I don't fret about my Q factor, and I suspect I'm better off with wider than narrower. 95 PBH, 60 QB Philip Philip Williamson www.biketinker.com On Oct 15, 7:53 pm, BSWP ashtab...@gmail.com wrote: I'm re-thinking my fixation on a single chainring up front... so a question to the other QB riders with two chainrings: how useful do you find the ability to switch up at the front? +1 for having 2 rings/2 cogs. also, it's good having the white bros. f/w. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Quest...
I've only used the inner ring on my QB once. I don't have the quick release hub they came with. I use a Surly bolt on hub so loosening up the rear wheel is a tad, by a hair, too involved to bother unless I must. On a somewhat related note, I just changed out the drivetrain on my Cross Check commuter. It's running a Sugino crank with a 40t Surly stainless chainring and a Surly 18t cog on an XT hub. I really like it. When the time comes to replace the ring on my QB I'd probably use a Surly cog. I've also thought about using the Surly Open Bars I'm running on my Cross Check. Although they are black I think they'd be a great bar for the QB. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: BQ Copies
Personally, I'd like to see more articles like that a year or two ago by the woman who toured India on an Indian 3d world roadster. The article on high-wheeler racing in New Zealand in the current issue was written by the same woman, Jada Van Vliet. We are working on bringing a greater diversity of writers into the magazine, but it's hard to find high-quality writing on bicycle-related topics. The Winter issue will have another article by the woman who portrayed the cycling culture of San Luis Obispo a while back... and there are others lined up. [RBW] Re: BQ Copies
Sounds like a call to action to aspiring bicycle writers! There are enough solid bike blogs - there must be a pool of talented and entertaining writers/photographers behind them. The problem, I imagine, is finding somebody to write about things from a fresh perspective, rather than another writer who essentially parrots his/her favored guru-figure. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Bicycle Times is pretty good. BQ is tops. RR is basically extinct. Other than that we are pretty much freaks. Go to the magazine rack and just look at the quantity of mags on cars, motorcycles, soccer, knives, watches, dolls, guns (OH my!), etcare we really that small? [RBW] Sizes for the SimpleONE?
Is it just me or are there other short and tall riders that are sad that the simple onedoesn't come in a size that meets the needs for our sizing? I've been always told that the Golden Rule of Three fulfills(never knew that it was spelled that way) the needs of a cyclist. For those not familiar with the Golden Rule of Three as stated in the Rules of Cycling let me drop some knowledge on you. In cycling as in life, the excitement is in the contrasts. One shall have a MINIMUM of three bikes of different characteristics to ride at different times as to cycle all year long. I know a handful you have met this cyclist need, but being a fairly young guy into cycling(four years or five in?) I feel that my cycling needs need to be met. I started with my road bike, my go-fast-on- smooth-roads bike then upgraded to my Bleriot, my go-anywhere-bike- because-I-can. Now that winter in looming over California I am urged to ride fast on these wets roads. Doing it on my road bike earned me some nice crashes. Riding with my Bleriot I find that it's not fast enough for what I want. So I figured the SimpleONE was something up my alley(with high enough gearing). Not wanting to compromise with quality and function I was wondering either two things. Is the SimpleONE ever going to be made for small guys and tall guys in the group? If anyone selling a small 48cm QuickBeam ?
