[RBW] Re: My favorite photo-capture of the year

2011-11-08 Thread Amit Singh
Thanks for all the good words on this photo and brief story. Smitty,
good eyes, you've identified the setup I have currently.

This may be the last ride on the Homer for the season. It's about to
get snowy and cold and with winter I like running fatter tires no a
more stable ride. Enter the 68cm Bombadil.

It's ready for action and performing better than ever - I took on some
thick forest single track in the dark of the tonight and had so much
fun. 2.5 hour ride which started at 8:15 pm. Pumped the legs hard
mostly the whole time and felt like a kid all over again. The
Bombadil is so much fun. If you don't have one you should get one
'cause you're missing out :)

Tom and I stopped for a hot-second in Pontiac, MI ... rough
neighborhood. I took a few photos:

And ... I was craving a peanut butter banana sandwich through the
whole of the ride ... So I made a variation on it when I reached home.

[RBW] Celebrity sighting on brevet

2011-11-08 Thread William
I did the SFR Del Puerto Canyon Brevet last Saturday. The ride on Del
Puerto Canyon Road was spectacular. It has been a while since I did a 24
mile continuous climb. Fortunately it was only steep at the end, but dang
it was steep at the end. Beautiful country there, especially since it was
cool and not yet raining. The only place to have a control out there is
The Junction Cafe, and all the randos treated themselves to a big plate of
whatever. I had a monster helping of chili fries. In front of the
Junction Cafe, I spotted an unmistakeable rig. The rider had overnighted
mear Mt Hamilton and his group was going to camp again Saturday night,
despite the guarantee of rain. It was odd running into a familiar face and
rig out in the middle of nowhere. Name that rider:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/6324307454/in/photostream

The brevet finished with 2 hours of darkness and about 3 hours of rain, but
all in all it was a delightful ride. One more for the R12!

[RBW] Dent in Seat Stay of Saluki

2011-11-08 Thread Peter M
So I recently acquired a used 58cm Saluki off the List here. I thought
that it would be a good choice because I love the classic look of the
Homer but at $1200 shipped I would be able to save almost 1k. Seller
insisted bike was perfect but when it came it had a ding in the
downtube and a small dent in the chainstay by the BB shell where it
looks like a chain dropped and got caught up in the crankset. Now the
ding in the downtube doesnt bother me because it is really small and
barelly visible but I know the BB is under alot of flex and just hope
that it is gonna be ok to ride this thing long term. I really just
need to be talked down before I flip the frame for 1k and lose 200 or
ship it back to Cali and have the tube replaced and bike repainted and
spend over 500 bucks. Here is a link for the pics I took of the
damage, just looking for opinions here.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/?saved=1

Just really disappointed that i thought i was getting something I
could ride for a long time and now feeling doubtful about its long-
term viablilty. Any opinions and thoughts would be welcome.

[RBW] Re: Riv-riding motorcyclists?

2011-11-08 Thread Mark R.
I have been riding motorcycles since 1990. For a while, about seven
years, i did not have a car, just my bicycles and my moto. I needed a
small truck and got out of them in 97, then got back into motos in 04.

We had taken a road trip from Cali to Wqshington state, and while
there, I brought my bicycle and did a century in Redmund. Tired the
next day, we rented scooters on San Juan island, and had a blast. With
my daughter on the back. she told me that if I got a scooter, i could
take her to school everyday. done

It was a 150cc Vespa, and it was too slow for the hills around here,
so i sold it and bought a Honda Hawk Gt650. I was putting 10k a year
on my bicycle, about 6k a year on the moto, commuting. Then i got a
ninja 650, fuel injected, and at 10k miles, had an accident in which a
lady pulled out in front of me, and stopped. I had the skills to skid
and slide around the back of her, then she panicked and i was afraid
she was going to through in in reverse, had a tank slapper reversing
directions, went down.

I wear full gear. I rolled, my full face helmet was destroyed. Had i
not been wearing it, I would not be here, or i would not have a face.
I shattered my right arm into hundred of pieces. It was doubtful i
would regain use of it. I have a plate and 13 screws, and worked
really hard to get it back, and it is fine. My doc said most folks
don't come back from my injury like I did.

That said, i still ride. I restored another 650 Hawk (cult bike,
google it, or i can send you a link to my restoration). Then I found
one that was a collectors, almost no miles, and bought that one, sold
the other on CL. I ride it maybe once or twice a week. I love it, but
i could give it up. Mostly keep it around now as backup
transportation in case something happens to my car, since i now live
alone.

Just yesterday, i was thinking if I had to choose, it would be the
bicycle. I love things with two wheels. To the original question, i
prolly put 7k miles on my bicycle a year, and 3k miles on the moto.

Do love watching motogp, and one of my favorite racers was killed two
weeks ago at Sepang race. It gives me pause for riding.

Re: [RBW] Riv-riding motorcyclists?

I own and ride several BMW motorcycles. My fave is an '04 GS Adv,
which I rode from CT to OR last summer ('10). The bicycle/mc ride
ratio varies, but it's all good. For the BMW GS series there is a
company (2x2 I think) that makes a mount to take a bicycle on a
motorcycle. best of all world's!

I like the modern Triumph recommendations, they're getting a great
reputation for reliability, yet they can be as pretty as the classic
examples. I regularly see an orange/white Bonneville T-100 in my
neighborhood, and I always find myself looking at them online afterwards...

I just scanned in a photo of a Honda that I bought new in 1987 and rode it
all over New England for a few years. It was a fantastic bike, I wish I
still had it.

[RBW] Re: Shellac Question

2011-11-08 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
I've tried fixing dark spots by brushing on denatured alcohol... it's a can
of worms I would recommend NOT opening. I've tried it twice. First time I
ended up giving the whole thing (cork grips) a bath in denatured alcohol
and starting over with thin coats. There was a little marbling effect left
over from the botched attempt but now that the grips have been in use for
over a year it's a non-issue. Second time was on a coat rack made of curly
maple. Again I applied amber shellac too thick and tried to fix it by
brushing den-alco on the dark spots. It got really ugly (splotchy) really
fast. I ended up sanding the whole thing back to bare wood and starting
over with thin coats of clear shellac to let the curly grain shine through
better.

The grips in the pics look great! I imagine if you put them on as-is and
started riding, any short comings in the shellac will soon be minimized to
a non-issue with a little busage.

Re: [RBW] Riv-riding motorcyclists?

2011-11-08 Thread Andrew Johnson
Patrick,

I used to own a lovely BMW Airhead, an '87 R80. It had the smoothest motor
you could imagine, with lightweight wrist pins and Cariillo rods... not as
vintage as some Beemers, but still plenty of soul, and fairly easy
maintenance. Yes, they do take maintenance, which you should lovingly
embrace. My 2000 oilhead R1150GS needs much less fussing, has more torque
and higher power, but most of all - it simply fits me better, a tall bike
for a tall rider.

Not knowing your height, you have many rides to choose from. My simple
suggestion? Take and pass the MSF course FIRST, and if you're still
motivated, get a $2000 used motorcycle - any motorcycle - and learn to
ride. Learn balance, throttle, learn to pick it up when you fall, learn
about wet roads and staying on the gas. Get some scrapes and bruises, nicks
and burns. Then, and only then, consider something more ex;pensive. As much
as I like my beemer, I am awfully fond of Yamaha's WR250R/X. Simple,
lightweight, superbe fuel consumption, great handling, easy maintenance.

+1 for 'don't worry about that at all'. I just acquired a steel frameset
in which the steel chainstay is squished so far that the tube walls meet in
the middle. And that's the right chainstay. It's squished like that to
maximize chainring clearance and tire clearance. It's not the way GP would
have done it, but it is totally common.

[RBW] Re: Ride Pics - Rambouillet in Bodega Bay, Coleman Valley Road, PCH

2011-11-08 Thread reynoldslugs
Thanks for the responses and queries.

David, the brake levers have grown a lot on me. The tops are less
flat on top than the other tektro and Campagnolo levers, but the
actual lever part fits perfectly in my hand. With the Tektro widemouth
brakes, they stop and modulate really, really well.

Toshi, that's a Rivendell Mark's Rack with a little loafer. I don't
put much it - - something to eat, small camera, iPhone, sometimes a
windbreaker or jacket. Or I strap the jacket on top. It's perfect
for all that and doesn't affect the handling of the bike at all. The
bike descends beautfully with or without a full bag in front.

Ray, I haven't mapped this yet, but the ride is basically the last 1/3

I did the SFR Del Puerto Canyon Brevet last Saturday. The ride on Del Puerto
Canyon Road was spectacular. It has been a while since I did a 24 mile
continuous climb. Fortunately it was only steep at the end, but dang it was
steep at the end. Beautiful country there, especially since it was cool and not
yet raining. The only place to have a control out there is The Junction Cafe,
and all the randos treated themselves to a big plate of whatever. I had a
monster helping of chili fries. In front of the Junction Cafe, I spotted an
unmistakeable rig. The rider had overnighted mear Mt Hamilton and his group was
going to camp again Saturday night, despite the guarantee of rain. It was odd
running into a familiar face and rig out in the middle of nowhere. Name that
rider:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/6324307454/in/photostream

The brevet finished with 2 hours of darkness and about 3 hours of rain, but all
in all it was a delightful ride. One more for the R12!

[RBW] Re: Fun with Fatties

2011-11-08 Thread Bob
I'm all for using things up, but where I live (rains most of the time)
I like to have full fat mudguards/fenders. My 610 could only accept
the clippies when running any decent tires.

The 610 will have a new home soon, with hopes.

touring bike, and decided to use them on the Trek with fenders and a custom
low-trail fork (65 mm!).  Bottom line: with the spacious new low-trail fork
I could make it work with 45 or 35 mm fenders.  On the back end, there is
enough room for 32s without any fenders or 28s with either fender.  Right
now it's built with 28 mm and the 35 mm fenders.  Rides well!  But I share
your experience about just not being able to crowd more tire in there.

Made you look (please forgive me).

Greetings from North Yorkshire, England. Tonight I had a bit of a
moment while trying to mount some new Schwalbe Winter studded tires
on my old, old, made in Wisconsin, USA, Trek 610. I got all excited
when the front tire fit with adequate-but-not-optimal clearance, but
then things went pear-shaped on the rear.

First, since my rear wheel is sporting one of those accidentally-
asymmetric Australian Velocity rims, so it was impossible to mount the
tire at all, as the bead kept popping off the slightly lower side. (I
had been running Panaracer Pasela 32mms, which apparently have enough
bite to mount on these loppy rims.)

Second, even if I had been able to mount the rear tire, it was obvious
  that it wouldn't have fit.

Thirty minutes later, and the frame was stripped for sale, and will be
up on ebay.co.uk soon. I have a box of OK to nice parts that I will
transfer to a new or new to me frame, as soon as I source one.

If anyone is one the fence about selling a beat-up (but not bent) old
Rivendell frame, one that allows mounting the biggest, fattest 700c
tires available, please let me know. I need about a 62cm.

In the meantime, what was my backup, a spiffy Surly LHT, is now my
daily driver. If you're wondering, I like having at least two properly
functioning bikes ready to go at all times (I'm car-free).

  Cheers,

An unsolicited puff: The short bill, ear-flapp'd, woolen caps are the bees'

custom woolen earflap cap. Cheaper, too.

Speaking of wind vests: is there anything like a cycling wind dickey that
you can simply shove under your jersey like a newspaper, but reusable? I
should think a good one would be a bit stiffish to make said shoving
easier, but not too stiff so that it can fold nicely into a small bundle
for a rear pocket.

Ideas for design, material? I would think that it would need no attachment
hardware and that it ought to be something other than plastic so that it
wouldn't feel icky (tech term) against bare skin.

I rode today in blustery mid 40s with just a Wabi jersey, but could have
used such a newspaper substitute at times.

[RBW] Winter Cycling Wear!

2011-11-08 Thread Liesl
When the daylight ends an hour earlier, the skies and trees are gray,
and the smell of snow is in the air, it's winter-wear time here in the
hinterlands...so I'm curious what folks' top Rivish winter clothing
items are. Here are some of my fav's:

-Filson #20 wool vest – simply the best; I'll live in one 'til April.
Made in the USA.
-deerskin/mooseskin choppers w/wool liners – toasty hands and no
problem with bar-end shifters. Lots of 'em made here in Owatonna, MN
-Steger Mukluks – again, simply the best; I'll live in them 'til April
and made in Ely, MN
-Wabi Woolens Adventure Jersey
-Pendleton wool shirt – best when found at the thrift store
-Empire Canvas cotton anorak for the coldest rides; made in Duluth, MN
-Dale ski sweater – fantastic when found at the thrift store
-thick wool ski cap under the helmet

That made me laugh, since I'd thought it was a minimally complex piece
of kit, but then I realized you were right.

FedEx envelope? I think the big tyvek ones would work pretty well. I'm
going to try it, anyway. If you need wider or longer, you can slice it
open creatively to make a single-layer double-sized shield.

Speaking of wind vests: is there anything like a cycling wind dickey
that you can simply shove under your jersey like a newspaper, but
reusable? I should think a good one would be a bit stiffish to make
said shoving easier, but not too stiff so that it can fold nicely into
a small bundle for a rear pocket..

didn't rivendell have something called the lobster bib...?

Ideas for design, material? I would think that it would need no
attachment hardware  and that it ought to be something other than
plastic so that it wouldn't feel icky (tech term) against bare skin.

I rode today in blustery mid 40s with just a Wabi jersey, but could
have used such a newspaper substitute at times.

  Or a wind vest?

sequential bikes from 12 to 24 for pretty much the whole neighborhood.
Coming up on 26 (and looking hard for a 90's 13 Hoo Koo E Koo or Trek 950
if someone has one stashed somewhere...) now, then on to 650b and 700c/29er
territory!

I looked long and hard to find a GREAT 20 KHS Montana.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4302651574/ I moved my kids on
to hand brakes and gears as soon as I could (this bike is ridden by my 5
y.o.). But oh how I would have loved to have a semi-lugged Rivendell
for them!

Hey Grant, consider a 24 version as well, that's the perfect kid size
(here's my take on the best option out there:
http://cyclotourist.blogspot.com/2010/05/found-perfect-kid-bike.html). You
can get kids all different sizes on that, and the 24 tires roll so
much better than 20 tires do.

[RBW] Re: Winter Cycling Wear!

2011-11-08 Thread Beth H
For commutes to/from work, I usually just wear my work clothes (jeans/
shirt/sweatshirt or sweater, regular shoes). If it's dry I'll top it
off with a heavy wool sweater, scarf and wool cap under my helmet.

For light rain I'll choose a lighter weight shirt and sweater and
layer it under a Burley rain jacket and Rainlegs.
For heavier rain I'll sawp in full Burley rain pants and shoe covers
(this year I've been useing RBW Splats and they work well).

If it's really cold I'll add a woo ear band to the cap, or swap in a
heavier wool cap with ear flap. If it's really, really cold I'll add
thin wool tights under my pants, though I always have to take them off
at work because it's too warm.

Gloves are most often ragg wool variety, even in the rain. I usually
carry extra socks and gloves with me so I have a dry pair for the ride
home.

Hey Grant, consider a 24 version as well, that's the perfect kid size
(here's my take on the best option out

 You
can get kids all different sizes on that, and the 24 tires roll so

Yeah, dibs on one of the samples. :-)

Though, from my experience, what boys really want are knobbies, gears, and
handbrakes in that order.

When he started 1st grade our neighbor gave my son a hand-me down Trek 20
coaster brake bike. I replaced the imitation moto-cross tires and fenders
with Schwalbe Marathons and full-coverage Wald chrome and gave it a nice
brass bell. (The cheap jingle-bell didn't last as my wife got sick of
listening to it everyday, twice a day, for ~2 miles each way.) I was going
to put some mustache bars on it to complete the look, but never got around
to it. I really should.

Of course, he has no appreciation for it and vastly prefers riding the 30+
lb full-suspension Walmart special yet another neighbor gave him. Of course
I let him choose which he rides. That is, until the rain comes then it's
sorry, gotta ride the 'fender' bike.

[RBW] Nitto Mini Rack and Riv All Rounder fork

2011-11-08 Thread Norman Bone
Hello-
I recently purchased a used Nitto Mini Rack to put on my Riv A/R. To my
surprise the struts are just short of the braze-ons. I measured the distance
between the fork crown hole and the braze-on and get 155mm. But the Nitto rack
measures 150 from the stud to the strut mounting hole. All measurements c-t-c.
Do you know what the distance usually is on Riv forks from the crown hole to
the mid-fork braze-on? Do you have a mini rack, if so what does it measure from
the mounting stud to the strut mounting hole? Any other advice/comments?

Re: [RBW] Riv-riding motorcyclists?

2011-11-08 Thread David Carter
I've been riding atop a BMW 1100GS for the past 7 years - usually every
other day for commuting and then a big trip once a year with my friends.
It is the perfect (motor)bike for me and I love it. Busy family life
began taking its toll and I found myself exercising less and less the past
few years. In late spring of this year I pulled out my 20 year old bicycle
which I bought for myself as a teenager and began riding it, for fun,
and then also once every week or two to get to work. There is something
special moving about on ones own power and I find myself enjoying
(bi)cycling more and more (funny how I forgot until now how much I liked to
bike when I was younger...).

On the downside, my commute takes a good 25 minutes via bicycle (versus 12
on my GS) and oddly enough I actually feel safer on my motorcycle - perhaps
because I move with the speed of traffic but also I think bicyclist
receive even less respect than motorcyclists.

I'll stick to my heated vest and motorbike on chilly days this winter, but
am looking forward to using my brand new Hillborne on nicer days :)

I'm really looking forward to the Spring and spending more time on my Riv.
Just bought a tandem tag-along bike so I can bring the little ones on my
adventures.

I've owned and ridden motorcycles since the day I graduated High
School (Mom said that once I graduated I was free to do what I would).
I probably put more miles on the motorcycle but more days on the
bicycle. Evens out I guess. BMW motorcycles would equate well to
Rivendell bicycles while the Suzuki V-Strom is the iBob cheaper
version. I love my V-Strom and yes, I've ridden lots of BMW's... 90%

[RBW] Ortleib and Carradice Bags fo Sale

2011-11-08 Thread Marc Schwartz
I am now offering the following bicycle bags of interest to Rivendell folks;
Prices include shipping to CONUS. Please inquire for picts and more info to
mschw...@nmsu.edu.
Thank you all for your consideration.

Ortleib waterproof front or rear panniers (one pair). An older version of their
current Sport Packer, approx 30 liter capacity (each), but quite expandable
at top. Black with f r reflective patches. One big compartment, no extra
pockets, two compression straps, drawstring snow and dust gasket, all
adjustable mounting hardware is included. Barely used for a few shopping trips
only. A little dusty from storage, otherwise almost pristine. Asking $100 for
the pair.

Carradice Bike Bureau briefcase pannier (single). Brand new old stock with
tags and all mounting hardware never mounted or used. Black heavy water
resistant cotton canvas with white leather straps, same features as current
model. Pristine, new. Commute with elegant British class (hoo-hoo!!). Asking
$115.00

Current versions of both items can be viewed on Peter White's website;

http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/packsracks.htm

Please reply to mschw...@nmsu.edu

Thanks,
Marc

[RBW] Re: Dent in Seat Stay of Saluki

2011-11-08 Thread Frank Brose
I agree with Jim. Hit it with some touch up paint and go ride it.
After it's built and a few rides You'll forget it even exists.

Just really disappointed that i thought i was getting something I
could ride for a long time and now feeling doubtful about its long-
term viablilty. Any opinions and thoughts would be welcome.

Side-stepping the whole issue of disclosure, that wouldn't worry me a bit.
Chainstays get crimped and recrimped with little effect, and that
indentation is a long way from a crimp.  A dimple, maybe, but it's unlikely
 to cause any failure.

[RBW] Re: OMG, a Kiddie Rivvy!

2011-11-08 Thread Philip Williamson
I love it. Scale it up for 29er big apples, and sell one to me.

I like the 20 mini/junior bmx race wheels on my son's Redline. He
rode that bike for 4 or 5 years, from barely straddling it at 5, to
dude, you need a new bike. Which was met with I hate riding bikes
anyway. Peaked early, I guess.

I think the bike could be a good rider for longer than two years,
especially if the seat tube was excessively slack, or changed
direction mid-tube like Jeff Jones' bikes.

This is just s fantastic.  I totally obsess on kid bikes and have
sequential bikes from 12 to 24 for pretty much the whole neighborhood.
Coming up on 26 (and looking hard for a 90's 13 Hoo Koo E Koo or Trek 950
if someone has one stashed somewhere...) now, then on to 650b and 700c/29er
 territory!

I looked long and hard to find a GREAT 20 KHS
 Montana.http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4302651574/ I moved my kids
 on
to hand brakes and gears as soon as I could (this bike is ridden by my 5
y.o.).  But oh how I would have loved to have a semi-lugged Rivendell
 for them!

Hey Grant, consider a 24 version as well, that's the perfect kid size
(here's my take on the best option out
 there:http://cyclotourist.blogspot.com/2010/05/found-perfect-kid-bike.html).
 You
can get kids all different sizes on that, and the 24 tires roll so
much better than 20 tires do.

[RBW] Re: OMG, a Kiddie Rivvy!

2011-11-08 Thread Philip Williamson
Agreed on the priorities of the Boy Child. My original idea for my
son's Redline was to pimp it out with recumbent fenders and moustache
bars, but that was rejected out of hand. He didn't want a miniaturized
version of Dad's bike, for some reason.

Though, from my experience, what boys really want are knobbies, gears, and

That looks great. I was just starting to plan a first bike for my 2
month old. Hope to see it in production but I (we) would be happy with
a proto.

hey Mike. did a quick estimate on UPS for shipping a 30lb box, and it said
around $45, but Ive shipped a bike box before, and its usually more due to
the dimensions, if I remember correctly, somewhere around $60.-Mike
