[RBW] Experience is the best Teacher
They say experience is the teacher of all things. For those that are local and are lucky enough to ride up Mt.Diablo ya'll now how it was riding up Mt.Diablo for the first time. After the ranger station you get one of those What the hell am I doing? moments. Being a teacher I have the unique opportunity to share my experiences with my students. Most of the time I share my cycling experience unwillingly. Most of my students dread to hear another adventure of Mr.Acosta. But some of them actually listen and are willing to go along with me to some of these adventures. One of my former students, Jesus, a fairly talented and strong sprinter wanted to ride the three ridable mountains of the bay area. Having conquered Mt. Hamilton at his leisure he wanted to try his hand at climbing Mt.Diablo. Being the word of reason I told him just let me know I'm down to take him whenever. Being the sickest that I've been the whole year he calls me asking if Diablo is okay to ride this weekend. Not really sure if the weather was going to hold up or if I was even able to make it up the mountain, I do that right thing and tell him lets do it. Not having a ride to the closest bart Jesus wakes up early and rides the 20ish miles to bart prior to riding Mt.Diablo. Being in Walnut Creek nothing really tops a ride up Mt.Diablo then with a short pre- ride trip to Rivendell HQ. Got to see boxer Elizabeth and her new Bruise-Blue Hillborne. Also got to meet Sean who was getting his last parts for his birthday Hillborne he wanted to finish that day. The ride itself was typical. Cold, windy, hard with a little bit of snow frost at the top. My only reprieve for almost coughing my lungs out at the top of the foggy and windy top is that Jesus got to experience this for himself. After another short stop at RivHQ (forgot to pick up Eben Weiss' new book), foam saddle pack by Vince and a little bit of camera dueling with Harry, it was a short bart ride back to Fremont. Jesus being young and crazy decides to ride back to San Jose despite just climbing over 4000+ feet of elevation. Now the kid wants to ride up Mt.Tam. This kid might kill me. [RBW] Re: What's the verdict on the Foss inner tubes?
I've been using them for about 6 months on my Atlantis. 26 wheels with Marathon Racers. No flats in 800+ miles. They do not hold air particularly well. I have to pump mine up at least once a week. [RBW] Rivendell Roadeo Report Requested.
I have been looking at purchasing a Roadeo to compliment my Sam Hillborne as a fast club riding bike. I am starting to do quicker rides, going with a group about three times a week along with longer distance rides on the weekend and really need a bike that is specifically for road riding of this type. I have contemplated putting together a skinny tire bike as I have a frame hanging in the garage but I have to confess that the idea of the skinny tires and carbon fork don't appeal to me all that much. It is a 2000 Lemond Zurich frame and fork so I do believe I could just sell it for what I bought it for if I don't turn it into a bike, so it really won't be a loss. The Sam Hillborne is a great bike, I love it, but I have it set up for touring and am using 650b wheels, friction bar end shifters and have installed the Sackville bar sack along with a rear rack. It is a wonderful bike to ride but I don't think it is the kind of build for the kind of riding I would use the Roadeo for. It just is getting to the point I think I may benefit from a quicker bike than the Sam. I believe I would be much happier in the end if I went with a Roadeo, or something like it (fatter tires, room for fenders, and steel fork) over the Lemond. I have a brand spankin new full Ultegra 6700 groupset all ready for a build, but would need to purchase wheels, handlebars and other stuff along with the frame and fork if I decide to go with the Roadeo. Anyway, that is the backstory to my predicament. What I was hoping for if those of you who own and ride a Roadeo can give me some of your honest opinions of it. What are some of the things you don't like about the bike, what do you really like about the bike? Most important I guess would be is if you find it quick enough for group riding in, say, the 18-22mph range? Did you go with the threadless setup or stick with the threaded/quill stem? [RBW] Re: Jan Heine says I can ride my Bombadil forever!
I don't know what the big deal is about this issue?! The Bicycle FAQ has a section on rames going soft here: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/frame-soft.html Good Luck! On Thursday, March 15, 2012 4:05:41 PM UTC-7, Jim wrote: Well, materials science WAS my major, and Jan is right on the bean in my opinion. I have some bike experience to back it up as well, as my pre-riv bike was a fillet-brazed Schwinn that I bought new in 1971, and still have today. No difference in the ride that i can see. The one way a frame COULD get flexier, is if you get a fatigue crack growing in a highly stressed joint, that will increase compliance and ultimately fail completely. So, if you ever do seem to think your bike isn't as stiff as you remember, better do a thorough check of the frame. The issue with leaf springs is that they operate very close to (and sometimes a bit past) the yield strength of the material, and over time and a few potholes you can permanently deform them. Steel bicycle frames don't operate anywhere near yield. Jim in Boulder On Thursday, March 15, 2012 11:25:53 AM UTC-6, William wrote: OK, that's not a direct quote. He didn't say that specifically, but in today's blog post, Jan *does* debunk the notion that steel frames go soft with use. They don't. You can't break in a steel bike and make it get more flexible for comfort and planing, and you can't wear out a steel frame in terms of stiffness. It doesn't get flexier with use. You might break it with use, but you won't make it flexier. Good read and uncontroversial for many of us, but definitely counter to the popular notion in the cycling community in general. http://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/03/15/frames-going-soft/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] beautiful rivendell
rbw_o_bunch, I am interested in selling a one-of-a-kind Rivendell bicycle. Note: I'm not a real bicycle person, but I have tried to do my homework here. If I have a part wrong etc., please feel free to correct me. I am trying to describe this bike and its history as clearly and honestly as possible for you. Mark Abele at Rivendell Bicycle Works (RBW) suggested this googlegroup as a good place to start, so you get the first shot. According Abele (RBW), the frameset was a custom-built in 2003 by Curt Goodrich in the all-rounder style (which is similar to an Atlantis). It features a custom paint job: a beautiful forest-green and cream combination. Frame size: 22.5 inches [maybe a shade less] or 57.15 centimeters (center of crank to where the seat post inserts) Standing height: 32.5 inches or 82.55 centimeters (floor to top of top tube near the center laterally) The parts are on the expensive side (for 2005): Crankset: Sugino XD2 with Phil Wood bottom brackets Brakes: Paul Touring and Neo-Retro cantilevers Break Leavers: Cane Creek SCR-5C Leavers Stem and Bars: Nitto lugged stem with Noodle bar Shifters: Shimano Bar End Shifters Post and Saddle: Brooks B-17 Champion Special with Nitto Frog post Bag: Baggins Banana Bag (full of tools, tubes, and such) Wheels: Phil Wood Hubs with Velocity Synergy rims and Panaracer Paseala tires Cages: Nitto 80th Anniversary cages Fenders: SKS P45's Bicycle Stands: Rothko Rolling Bicycle Stands (pair) On-board Tire Pump: Zefal hpx4 Bell: Brass bell Abele says: Overall a super-nice bike. Purchased new, that would sell for around $5K is my guess. History: As I mentioned (above), the frameset was a custom-built in 2003. It was returned by the original customer because the spacing between the canti brake bosses were not to his spec. RBW resold the frameset, outfitted with all the parts (above), to a neighbor of mine in 2005. He, it seems, loved the dream of the bike more than actually having and riding the bike, my guess is that he rode the bike about 10 miles or less (yes, I'm serious). I acquired the bike in 2007 or 08 when he was going through a domestic brake-up. I, in turn, had great plans to ride, but back surgery and prostate cancer informed me otherwise. I rode it one afternoon at the former Alameda Navel Air Base. Since that time, it's been hanging from the collar ties in my painting studio. In short, during it's life, this bike has hardly been used. And quite frankly, I enjoy just looking at it, but it's time to pass it along to someone who will love and ride it as intended. Asking price: $3,200 (I don't want to dicker really, but I will entertain any serious offer.) [RBW] Re: What's the verdict on the Foss inner tubes?
I have (or had) foss tubes with Quasi Moto tires. I say or had because the rear one is now, due to user error, in the trash. I used the cloth (velox?) rim strips that I already had on the wheels, and had no problems related to that. The other weekend I picked up several goat heads on the Las Trampas to Mt. Diablo regional trail. I pulled and patched some on the rear at the Macedo Ranch staging area. But I did not locate all the offenders and still had a slow leak. I was stoping and pumping on the way back and broke the valve stem (user error). The front was on a slow leak too. When I got home and went over things I put patches on the front foss tube and it now holds fine. I pulled several thorn remnants from my tires and patched a hole one had put in the spare I put in the rear after I broke the valve stem. I am not sure how many patches I put on each foss tube, but between the two I used up 5 of the 6 patches in one packet. I did a casual leak down test on the front before pulling the thorns and patching it. It took about 50min to drop from about 50 to 30psi, 20min more to reach ~25psi and another 28min to fall to ~17psi. My gauge is suspect (hand gauge and floor pump gauge don't agree), I only took 4 measurements, and the data doesn't have a consistent trend. This might indicate roughly 20psi per hour pressure loss with 2 or 3 goat heads in the tube. Because of flexing the leak rate might be worse when riding. My current take is that a foss tube with goat heads leaks slower than a normal tube but it does still leak at a significant rate. The more thorns the more leaking. Will you make it where you are going without patching or changing the tube? Well that depends on how many thorns, how far you are going, how hard you inflate it after noticing the leak, how low a pressure you can tolerate, and how often you will stop and add air. On the pro side: I like the long smooth stems, and I believe they leak slower than normal tubes when thorns are in em. I don't have good A/B pressure v.s. time data for foss/normal tubes with goatheds in em, and I doubt I will do such a test, but I think that is what you would need to make an informed decision. On the con side: $20 each is a bit dear, and the patches are not cheep either. How much the benefits are worth to you is a personal decision, and reasonable folks may come to varied conclusions. I suspect the reliable counter to goatheads is to ride the gufaw at goatheads stout Schwalbe fatties. That or don't ride where there are goatheads. [RBW] Re: What's the verdict on the Foss inner tubes?
I'm interested in this too as I'd like to run the Grand Bois tires but have to deal with lots of goat heads. Does it really matter if it can stay inflated with a nail through it if its just going to go flat when the offending object comes out? As mentioned,**IF** you have a piercing object stay in the tire, the FOSS tube will function as desired. I've had a couple flats with mine. They seem to lose air slowly so you may be able to finish a ride before intervention is needed. [RBW] rolly-Polly vs. Ruffy Tuffy
Hello all, I need to replace the front tire of my bike, a vintage Trek 520 touring bike. I've got a Rolly-Polly on the back which is in good shape. I need a new tire for the front. In my mind I have two options that would work, either a Rolly Polly (provides a match with the rear tire) or a Ruffy Tuffy (a near match with the rear). The bike will be on the road the majority of the time. However, I do anticipate riding on some local trails that are covered with stone dust (such as the Erie Canal Towpath Trail). From what I can gather, the Rolly Polly is going to be lighter and feel more lively than the Ruffy Tuffy (which I've read a number of people describe as feeling dead). However, given the fact that I will be riding this tire on the stone dust trails, might I be wise to go with the thicker heavier tire? Thanks for your thoughts. I'm amazed at the feel of the bike. I've been riding a Specialized Roubaix (carbon frame). Re: [RBW] Lights for Nitto racks
Anne, I used one of those dreamy shiny stainless steel clamps with the rubber inserts, maybe they're designed to mount racks to forks or seat stays, but I used one around an LED flashlight, and secured it to my WALD basket with a single bolt and nut and a washer. I bet you could do the very same thing, securing to one of the side flanges that are pre-threaded. It works GREAT and is easy to turn on or off. I use a small single-battery (CR123) light from FourSevens. I think the clamps are called P clamps at the dreaded velo-orange, but RBW sells 'em, and includes them with rack kits. Here you go, they call them NItto Band Clamps: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/rh3.htm - Andrew, B-erkeley On Fri, Mar 16, 2012 at 8:11 PM, Anne Paulson anne.paul...@gmail.comwrote: Probably some of you have those Nitto racks Rivendell sells. Re: [RBW] beautiful rivendell fs
This is one beautiful bike! And, if I were to build a custom, it is almost exactly how I would have kitted it. It's even my size, and looks a lot like my Ram did when I first got it. I hope someone grabs this and makes good use of it. On 3/18/2012 11:19 AM, Jack Stone wrote: rbw_o_bunch, I am interested in selling a one-of-a-kind Rivendell bicycle. Asking price: $3,200 (I don't want to dicker really, but I will entertain any serious offer.) For images of the bike, please go to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/not_relevant/sets/72157629229376958/ Thanks (I encourage any constructive feedback) Napes -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: beautiful rivendell fs
Beautiful bike!!! If I rode a road bike and didn't have a Rivendell already. I'd buy this. That bike deserves to be ridden. But it is a work of art too. This is a great bike. Thank you for sharing the pictures. On Mar 18, 2:19 pm, Jack Stone jst...@westernwedge.com wrote: rbw_o_bunch, I am interested in selling a one-of-a-kind Rivendell bicycle. [RBW] Pricing Advice on Romulus
I have an early Romulus (RM029) that I don't ride much and I am considering selling it since I also own a Rambouillet. I am trying to get an idea of the value before I list it, as O may keep it for my son (he's only 11, but he's growing like a weed). I am the second owner, so I'm not sure what the year is, but it is the earlier model with sidepull brakes. The spec is largely stock with Nitto drops, Sugino cranks, Shimano 105 derailleurs, and wheels. The tires are now Pasela TourGuard 700x35s (front brand new) and has brand new bar tape. I would guess that it only has a couple thousand miles on it at most. I would rate the overall condition as good due to several paint scratches (mostly out of the way) and one small dent in the top tube (still not sure when that occured). The downtube decals are starting to peel but I have new replacements that I just received. It will not come with a saddle or pedals. If anyone is willing to give me their 2 cents on a value range I would appreciate it. thanks Kevin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Pricing Advice on Romulus
I'd say it's worth in the ballpark of $1000 provided it doesn't need anything replaced in order to render it rideable. If it's got lots of snazzy bags and racks on it, it could be worth even more. People are delighted to pick up a used Rambouillet for ~$1200, and the Romulus is only slightly less valuable, in my view. Best of luck! [RBW] WTT Berthoud decaleurs. Mine for yours (super long longshot)
I have a Gilles Berthoud decaleur. It's an H-91. That means it fits on a quill type stem with a horizontal bolt like a Nitto Pearl or Technomic type stem, and it has the extension piece 91mm long. I expect I'll just have to go buy it, but on the miraculous off chance you have a threadless 70 Berthoud decaleur, I'd love to trade. Re: [RBW] Pricing Advice on Romulus
Hi Kevin, As a reference point (not meant to discourage!), I couldn't get any interest in my good condition 63 canti-Rom as a bike with Phil/Schmidt wheels for $950 or as a frameset for $550. That was 4 years ago, though, and I decided to keep it rather than cut the price further. I had paid $600 for the slightly used frameset in 2005. The tall size probably gave it a smaller potential market. [RBW] Ft Collins, CO Area Rides/Routes?
It sounds like me and mine are making last minute plans to visit family in the Ft Collins area (specifically Windsor) in the immediate future. I may be able to sneak my bike along. If I can get my bike there I'd like to get out and do some exploring. Anyone on here familiar with the area and want to offer up a tidbit or two about routes, destinations, etc? I'll be on 40mm tires and would prefer mixed terrain... the more dirt roads the better. Non-technical single track is fine too. I've been up to Horsetooth Reservoir (via car) and googled it recently and it looks like there might be some promising riding around there. Is that correct? I also wouldn't mind exploring the flats a bit but perhaps something other than the grid of farming roads would be more interesting. Wetlands? I'll have access to a car but would probably prefer stuff that I can ride to from the doorstep. [RBW] Re: Jack Browns vs. Pasela vs. ??
I have ridden the Paselas in several configs..and like them fine. My current tire is the 700x40 Marathon Supreme and 35mm Panaracer T serves on the SimpleOne. They are fast enough for me at 257 pounds. Honestly I don't notice a huge diff in tire brands to a point but the weight and general construction seems to make some difference. Most of my perceptions about how one is better than another are based on unscientific observation. IMHO there are too many variables to say if one is better than another performance wise. A major concern of mine is reliability without that the 1/2 mph difference in speed becomes pretty moot. As to the tire pressure thing someone mentioned, I think that really depends on load weight. A ten psi difference is noticeable to me on pavement and under inflation for ones weight is not the way to get comfy, fast or reliable. The longer I've been riding the more I appreciate a reliable wide tire. The Jack Brown seems like a fine tire being durable and speedy enough. I thought I might buy some after the T Serves wear out. [RBW] Re: Rode My First Rando Event Today
Glad you had a good day of it. Sometime when you feel up to it, try one of the longer rides. In my experience, there's something that happens somewhere out beyond the edge of way-past-the-furthest-distance-that-you-thought-you-could-go that is really special, and that just doesn't happen on the shorter rides. Riding through a day and then a night and watching the sun come up is an experience unlike any other. And it just isn't the same to start a ride before dawn and watch the sun come up. Being out there for multiple days and nights has an addictive quality. I came prepared for 100k of riding in a downpour. Instead I should have wore sunscreen. No bonk or nutrition/cramp issues... I believe largely thanks to tips from the list. My goal was to finish in 6 hours (a little over 10mph average) and I got my card signed at 5:55. Perhaps I could have pushed myself and gotten a slightly better time but that would have eaten into my breaks, conversations, and scenery gazing. I don't really feel the need to jump right into the longer brevets but it's likely I'll be back for more 100k rides. My control card proved it happened, but it's on it's way to France. These pics will have to suffice.https://picasaweb.google.com/113148323994353762329/OregonRandonneursSnoozevillePopularie100k?authuser=0feat=directlink cheers, Smitty -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Jack Browns vs. Pasela vs. ??

I have plenty of experience with high volume 650b tires and not as much first hand knowledge about plumper 700c tires. I ride 700x28 Paselas (both TG and non) on a regular basis. Are Jack Browns a better ride and/or long life than the 32 or 35mm Paselas? Are there other tires that one should consider? Kojacks? GB Cypress? [RBW] Re: Ft Collins, CO Area Rides/Routes?
While I'm not specifically familiar with the FoCo area, the roads in CO are great to ride on. You might climb up the hills to the west of the city, or you could head south and then east, climbing to Carter Lake. Pawnee Grasslands, to the north, might also be a possibility for some mixed surface riding (gravel and pavement). On Mar 19, 9:58 pm, Smitty 54ca...@gmail.com wrote: It sounds like me and mine are making last minute plans to visit family in the Ft Collins area (specifically Windsor) in the immediate future.
