Gack! I would have bought the whole set if you posted this to the list

[RBW] Re: Seattle Honjo Install Recommendation in Seattle

2012-03-22 Thread rob markwardt
A big fan of the patience method here. I've installed at least 5
pairs of Honjo's, Berthouds, and VO's. My projects usually run into
weeks, months or years but in the long run they seem to work out. I
don't think the install is too difficult but it's not a rush job like
bolting on SKS fenders. That being said it still can be difficult. I
recently ripped off a VO Zepplin front fender and tossed it in the
garbage can in a fit of rage because I could not get it securely
attached without rattling or rubbing. It drove me nuts! I'm now
riding a mutt with Berthoud on front and a VO on back...it works. I
live in Seattle and would say Elliott Bay is tops. Free Range is very
Riv-centric and judging by their floor models I'm sure could do a good
job. I'd be glad to help out but at my pace we might be preparing for
the rains of next winter.

[RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-22 Thread RJM
If I was going to upgrade to more modern componentry on an Atlantis, I
would be more apt to go with something like Sram Apex. Plenty of gear
range, modern style brifters, and still lightweight enough.

[RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-22 Thread dougP
"This is my goto bike for commuting and tours."

Maybe not very creative but an Atlantis in a standard Rivendell build
is unbeatable for versatility. If you're changing the entire
drivetrain, why not just go with the Sugino / Shimano / Tektro / etc.
components? Reasonably priced, bolts on with no fuss & away you go.
Cyclofiend's Atlantis page has gobs of bikes with build details so
lots of choices to look at and they've all been proven to work.

I inherited a bunch of Campy stuff a few years back & fiddled around
for a bit, then found a guy who needed pretty much all of it for some
roadie type build he was doing. Glad I never started screwing around
mixing'n'mathcing Campy & Shimano; the way I play with this stuff I
would still be at it.

OTH, Eric is "campyonlyguy" and has an entirely opposite view. So it
can work.

Definitely fatter tires; those 1.1s look so skinny! Maybe not all the
way up to 2"+ size (although it does look good) but something with
more meat on it.

The 1.1's that came on the wheels are WTB "Slickasaurus". They came on the
wheels which were from a different bike. They were actually fine and plenty
usable if you were sticking to smooth(er) conditions. I did have them wash

[RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-22 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Well, modern-ish Campy will generally be made for road bikes with 130 mm
dropout spacing. The Atlantis is 135 mm, so you'll have to squish the frame
a little, modify a hub. Or maybe you already have CK hubs with a Campy
freehub? When you've figured that out, you'll have to reconcile yourself to
Campy's race-oriented gearing. If you want a cog bigger than 29t, no stock
Campy cassette will work. And if you re-space a Shimano cassette with
bigger cogs, will a Campy derailleur handle the bigger cog? Will any of the
Campy cranks clear the bowed-out Atlantis chainstays?

IMO, Campy is a quick road to frustration, heartache, and lots of money
spent. Every Campy bike I've ever worked on has been a pain in the ass.
Trying to find parts for older series drivetrains is often frustrating and
expensive, if not impossible. We have a buddy at a nearby shop. Everytime
we call him with one of our Campy compatibility questions, he usually
laughs for a few minutes before delivering the bad news.

[RBW] Re: What a difference a week (or two) makes...

2012-03-22 Thread Greg J
Congrats! That's my dream bike, too (a Waterford AR), if I can find a 53.

I really like the look of the skinny-tubed, level tt bike with the fat 26
wheels.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTT: my 650b Wheels for your 26" Wheels

I ran 26" wheels on my 700 size bike, using Tektro long reach calipers with
the pads at the bottom of the slot. The brakes work, but the handling of
the bike was negatively affected.

Re: [RBW] What a difference a week (or two) makes...

2012-03-22 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Very nice -- congrats.I myself want a Atlantis (and a Bombadil and a
Roadeo, not to mention other things).

Tires: what 1.1s? Really, for a bike like that, I highly recommend
something Schwalbe, either the 50 mm Blg Apples (60 if things are
really rough) or the ditto (50 mm) Kojaks: the former for flat
resistance with decent rolling abillity, the latter for rolling with
decent flat resistance.

I still remember with fondness my early '90s Diamond Back budget fixie
all rounder with dd stem, Noodles and 60 mm Big Apples and ~ 63" gear.

My brother just picked up (for $120!) a rare (500 made during the
single year of production) Specialized Rock Combo, basically an AR
with clearance for 2+ inch tires. This has slightly more road-like
geometry (72 degree head, for example).

Me, I'll put up wlth the Fargo for now because it is so versatile
(mountain, sand, touring, groceries, modestly sprightly derailleur
road bike since I have not one of those) tho' the handling on pavement
is hardly up to Riv standards.

[RBW] What a difference a week (or two) makes...

2012-03-22 Thread jinxed
So 2 weeks ago I got the lust for some 26" fun and hung the AHH out there
on the trade hook fishing for some Atlantis.

As it turns out I get a snappy email off the bat asking if I might have
interest in an All Rounder? U YEP. We quickly hammered out a grocery
list trade and BOOM...off to UPS.

Got the frame and extra bits Tuesday. Lets just put it this way...I could
not have dreamed of a more exact answer to my wishes. And the deal was made
extra pleasant having a professional, courteous, and enthusiastic person to
deal with on the other side of the computer webz. Thanks again...you know
who you are.

Happily, we exchanged nearly identical parts as to keep from needing
additional purchase to re-build the bikes. Frames/wheels/brakes traded,
everything else swapped over. Thumbs up.

So I got her built and took the maiden voyage as my commute to work
yesterday. I received the wheels with a 1.1" slicks that I kept on there
for the shake down, although I plan to run a fatter semi-knobby maybe like
a town and country (or group recommendation??). Basically everything came
directly off my Hilsen and swapped right over. I opted to go back to my
favorite mustache bar set up, though I may use my dirt drop stem in the
future. The only thing I didnt use from the Hilsen was the Paul Racer
brakes, which I will sell/trade to get some Neo Retro cantis. (I wanna be
like cyclotourist) ;)

By the end of the day yesterday I rambled around for 50+ miles riding my
"long commute" home over bike path, surface streets, dirt service roads,
and single track. Truly "All Round".

For grins today I swapped out the tires to some 2.1 MTB knobbies I had just
so I could bask in the clearance and badassery of the thing.

Check it out. I'll keep adding to the set and follow up with impressions.

What does "bottomed out" mean here? Do you mean you have the pads at

Fender has a profile like this: U Open out the U by spreading the
edges and it will tighten the curve; close in the U by squeezing the
edges together and it will open out the curve of the fender.

One problem you might expect to find on a Rivendell is improper location
of the chainstay bridge. I've seen one Atlantis where the chainstay
bridge was so far from where it needs to be for a good fender line the
owner used the full length of a wine cork as a spacer.

You could move it, and you could fill in the old holes with nuts and
bolts or something.

You can keep your brifters and your eleven speeds, but trust me, the
Campagnolo Racing T is the best front derailleur ever made for typical
Riv-style compact triple wide range drive trains, the sort of thing you
would expect to find on an Atlantis.

Besides Jitensha's instructions, Velo Orange has instructions for
mounting metal fenders online. And of course, BQ has published several
articles on mounting metal fenders.

I've studied all these, and have achieved good results -- repeatable
results, too, because I've mounted at least 3 sets -- and I'm at least
as much of a klutz at Patrick.

As far as impatient goes, here's one area where you really cannot, MUST
NOT be impatient. Installing metal fenders will teach you patience. Go
with the flow, treat it like that arm crank they have you turn for rehab
for shoulder problems (it'll only go so fast no matter how hard you wail
away at it, and a light touch is all you need to make it go at its one
and only pace) and take your time.

It's really not hard. Hell, I can do it, and if I can do it anyone can
do it. (Sometime I'll tell you the story of my 7th grade wood shop and
the Scotty Dog Bookends and the Maple Leaf Nut Tray.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Longshot - WTB 32 Hole Campagnolo compatible rear cassette hub

2012-03-22 Thread Sean Whelan
Thanks to everyone for all of the feedback and suggestions. I am happy to
report that a list member dug through the parts bin and found two suitable rear
hubs and I completed a purchase of both. (I do have lockrings and cassettes in
my stockpile).

I love this group. The most civil cycling minds anywhere. The next time I build
a full budget wheelset, I will purchase the White Industries hubs.

Cheers,
Sean

Sean,

I would suggest WI or if you can deal with Black hub, DT 350.  Those Campy hubs
are nice and their street price is usually more than WI hub new.  They are very
easy to adjust and service.

[RBW] Re: FS: Baggins Bags, B67, etc

2012-03-22 Thread Robert Kirkpatrick
Figure I should send out an update. The Candybar bag and Saddle have sold but
the Adam and Arkel bags are still available. I'm updating my original notes on
these items with some info I forgot:

1) Rivendell Baggins Adam saddlebag - $125 shipped CONUS
Classic Baggins bag, in good shape but plenty of beusage. I bought this used
and fairly quickly determined that it was about the same capacity as my Paladin
bag which I slightly prefer. So time to pass it along. It didn't come with the
2 front leather straps and I never replaced them so those won't be included.
The straps for the seat post and saddle are all present. Acorn sells leather
straps that look like they'd work. Pictures can be seen here:

3) Arkel Laptop briefcase - $75 shipped CONUS
This was the original Arkel laptop briefcase which uses their older (but still
very effective) mounting hardware. I always used a raincover with this bag and
thus it is in very good shape. One of the male buckles has a tong broken off
but it still closes fine and would be an easy and inexpensive item to replace.
It includes a raincover which is. much more worn looking but still repelling
moisture just fine. This is the best laptop carrying bag out there, with an
internal, suspended waterproof sleeve that your laptop slides into (and can be
removed - I'd often take this with me when doing non-bicycle traveling). Sleeve
fits typical 15" laptops, I used it with two Apple laptops a 15" Titanium
Powerbook and an 15" Alumininum MacBook Pro. Pictures can be seen here:

Paypal preferred for payment. All prices include shipping. Feel free to make
offers. I'd also be willing to include any of these items in trade for a set of
the old Baggins Pa Panniers in any sort of non-ripped condition.

Thanks again,
Robert

Ryan: Hiroshi at Jitensha studios has, or had, minutely detailed
instructions for mounting Honjos that helped me install my last pair

That said, I've installed metal fenders (Berthouds) sans instructions

[RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-22 Thread Mojo
Tom,

Campagnolo, the name that illicits a response form all cyclists. The
company dipped in mystique and tradition.

My Campy response is blech! In the 70s I bought a Record groupo to go on my
new frame for racing. the bits were oh so pretty and prestigous and
expensive. But then I found out the hard way that the Record headset would
pit if you tightened it just slightly too much. And that Record cranks had
a built in stress riser and were prone to break. I ended up breaking two of
them before I replaced it with a 1986 era Dura-Ace crank that i am using to
this day. At some point around 1980, I rode a friends bike with Suntour
components and realized the rear derailer worked much better (slant
parallelogram design copied by Campy & everyone else today) and the Suntour
brakes actually stopped the bike! Then there was the 110bcd Campy crank
that offset one of the arms just a tad so you would have to buy Campy
chainrings.

Today I have long since sold off all my racing wheels, cleats, and Campy
bits for Shimano/Suntour/TA parts that cost a fraction and work as well or
much better.

Campy will always have that glorious history, and still has prestige for
some reason. And Campy certainly has some impressive prices! oh and the 11
cogs! I will say their brifters are nice and the Athena 11 speed brifter
will shift a 9 speed Shimano drivetrain nicely.

But in my mind's eye putting Campy parts on an Atlantis is like putting
a designer spoiler on a Jeep.
Not that there is anything wrong with that!

[RBW] Re: Seattle Honjo Install Recommendation in Seattle

2012-03-22 Thread Ryan Ray
Well the front fender is attached in three spots but totally off center.
Unless I hide it with my bag all I can do is be annoyed by the off
centeredness.

The rear doesn't have a nice fender line at all and it seems like I get
rubs all the time. Some times I just wiggle the rear fender and it goes
away for a while.

They also mounted the back light right on top the stays which looks bad. I
know that part can't be fixed.

Either $60 or $80 for the installation. I can't remember.

My bike might not have been an easy install but if it wasn't going to work
I would have preferred they just say "Nope, not going to happen". Then I
could have sold the fenders.

I don't fault them. I'm just looking for a Honjo expert to either help mine
(which may be past fixing as all the holes are drilled) or for the next
bike. I'm about to put the 30 year old plastic ones back on which is kind
of a bummer.

[RBW] Re: WTT: my 650b Wheels for your 26" Wheels

2012-03-22 Thread colin p. cummings
I ran with this setup for a while, using Dia Compe centerpulls. The
brakes were pretty much bottomed out to match the rims, but they
work. I have 50mm Big Apples, so on a 556 wheel the diameter is about
656 (556+50+50). Running a 32mm tire on a 584 rim (650b) has a
diameter of about 648 (584+32+32), so it doesn't really change the
handling from a typical setup, and I like the fatter tire and the way
it fits a little better lower in the fork and rear stays. It also
leaves some room for fenders, moreso than when I run Fatty Rumpkins on
my Bleriot.

It's as simple as that. See a pic of my old setup at

[RBW] Re: Post-winter tune-up/clean-up/maintenance advice sought.

2012-03-22 Thread stevep33
Clean the brakes out.. maybe give the brake pads a light sanding to
renew the surface that may be chewed up from winter grit.

on a related note, I've started using Chain L lube, and it's as
terrific as claimed - long lasting, low maintenance. Use this stuff
if you are putting on a new chain.

Hey group,

I've got a set of Rich built 650b wheels, Velocity 32H rims, that I
would like to trade for a 26" set of similar quality. These are on my
Bleriot and were bought from a list member about 1.5 years ago. Not a
lot of miles on them since then. I used to ride with 26" rims on my

I agree about the bars. The Alba's place the hands back much further,
thus compressing your position. You need a longer stem and/or top

may sense that it is too big.
