[RBW] FS: 1984 Trek 660, 56cm

2012-03-29 Thread Pondero
Maybe you're thinking it would be nice to have a zippier ride. You like
steel and lugs, and have a thing for classic technology. Maybe you're
considering the Roadeo, but are having trouble pulling the trigger because,
well, it is a significant investment. Maybe then, you'd consider a
complete classic road bike, with Brooks saddle, Grand Bois tires, Noodles,
good ol' standard diameter Reynolds 531 steel, and a pretty sweet Campy
Nuevo Record drivetrain. No need to baby it. It's already broken in, so
just let 'er rip.

And its red, which is a pretty fast color...

If this is you, let's talk. Off list, of course.

[RBW] Maxy Fasty as a commuter tire

2012-03-29 Thread kevin lindsey
Greetings.
My aging 650b Fatty Rumpkins have suffered yet another puncture and
I'm thinking of switching over to a pair of new Maxy Fasties that I
purchased on a whim a year or so ago. I commute mostly on paved bike
trail, but have to ride for about two miles on light gravel. My
question is whether the Fasties will hold up to this kind of use or
whether I should buy another set of Rumpkins (which have been great
tires, overall), or whether there is a better commuter tire out there
for my Bleriot.
Many thanks,
Kevin

Re: [RBW] Re: Gearing question

2012-03-29 Thread Joe Broach
Looks good to me! I tried something similar for a while with a 34/22.
Front derailer setup was fiddly. There was a fine line between getting
it to shift to the big ring and shifting off to the outside of the
big ring. I ended up switching to manual front shifting, then removed
the rear derailer to make a sweet 2x3 setup (3 usable gears).

[RBW] Re: Maxy Fasty as a commuter tire

2012-03-29 Thread Liesl
I run Maxy Fasties on my Protobleriot in the summer and ran Nifty
Swifties for several years on my Saluki. This past winterless winter,
I put Soma Xpresses on the Proto. I've also used Col de Vies on the
Saluki. My bikes do service primarily as commuters between St. Paul
and Minneaplis with a 20-mile round-trip. About half the commute is
on a side street that is in rough shape pot-hole and crack-wise, and
then there's ice and crusty snow. Only the Col de Vie has given me a
flat, but a slow one. Were I in your situation, and I was looking at
Maxy Fasties, I'd give a good long look at the Nifty Swifties as the
tougher version but still slim (33). I am also liking the Soma
Xpresses which I got for winter because they have more tread, were
recommended on this list-serve, and were the biggest tire (~38) that
the proto could take with fenders.

Keep us posted...

Me too! Well, mostly. I ride a 51 proto bleriot and a 50 saluki and
drive an '06 Honda Element. That's at 5'2 and a PBH of 76 if I
remember correctly.

The one thing that I find a challenge about my little bikes is
clearance between the saddle and a rack/fender for a biggish saddle
bag, lil loafer in back, or a wald basket. Mostly I've gotten it to
work and Mark's Rack is a god-send for a custom fit in the back. I
had a battle getting a new Tubus Airy (which I am really liking for a
go-less-slow bike) to fit on the chain-stay upper braze-ons because
they were narrow, and forget about a pletscher on the little guys
(does anyone have a secret about mounting one on a 50 frame?). A
Carradice Barley is a great traditional saddlebag for a low saddle
that has good room for daily use.

And I agree with Pam. It's so hard to find a great-fitting beautiful
little bike that once you find one, it does become a forever bike.

My policy on tires is the following:

Buy tires anytime you see tires that you can't resist buying, and put them
in inventory. In other words, never 'shop' for tires when you need them,
but always keep your eyes open for cool tires.
When you need tires, always get them from internal inventory
Experiment with everything in internal inventory. Swap tires around with
abandon, anytime the urge hits.

So, if you follow my stupid policy, then absolutely put on the Fasties and
try them out.

Assuming you'll use the same 36T 24T rings, and that they shift OK

Heck, just stick on the 9 speed and ride it for a while before

RE: [RBW] Re: Best rain cover for a Brooks?

2012-03-29 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Maybe UV even affects bars? From the next to last Blug: Nitto says any
aluminum handlebar that's ten years old should be replaced. Aluminum degrades
when it's exposed to the elements, and soyou also might not want to ride
your twenty-five year old French handlebars that were made when there were mild
standards if any to pass. The same for 20-year old Cinelli drop bars. It all
depends.

That's a good point, Jim.

I'm not sure many people consider the amount of UV a bike that is used for
daily transportation gets. I know I don't, or didn't, until now.
If you lock your bike up outside a lot (perhaps less an issue for Riv owners)
not only the saddle, but the tires, bar tape, brake hoods and cable housings
get a pretty good UV bath. Fenders help the tires a bit, I guess.

I'm sure UV is no good for leather, so any cover would help some. I use my
aardvark cover for theft deterrence and rain defense. Guess I'm getting UV
defense too in the bargain.

Hi Manny. If you are used to doing 40-mile-plus-type rides, then you have
nothing to worry about. Just wear what you normally wear and ride like you
normally ride. Eat what you normally eat. To add on to Esteban's advice,
also bring a plastic sandwich bag to hold your brevet card, receipts, and

[RBW] Frame Pumps for a 64 Hillborne

2012-03-29 Thread Mike On A Bike
I've had some trouble finding a frame pump for my new 64 cm Sam
Hillborne. I ordered an HPX 4, thinking it was sure to fit with the
enormous tube lengths on there, but it's actually too big to fit with
the pump peg, and too small to fit snugly under the lower top tube.

I'd really like to use the HPX as my frame pump, and I'm wondering if
the best option is to just strap the 4 on the lower tube with some
sort of velcro attachment? Anybody know what would be best to use if
that's the answer? Also, does anybody have a smaller HPX that works
with the pump peg, or any other good frame pump for that matter?

Thanks.

Zefal used to make a black plastic clamp-on pump peg for this type of
situation. Or you can track down an old chrome-plated Campy clamp-on peg.

[RBW] Re: SF Randonneurs Populaire this Saturday

2012-03-29 Thread Stephen S
I am planning to go too. It will be my first time also. I was originally
planning to ride on my roadeo but I only have fenders on the rambouillet.
I'm not that fast but I'll ride with ya all. Look for the blue rambouillet
with ranger tan acorn bags.

More importantly what do I wear? Hopefully I can tag along with
someone who knows what their doing.

2012-03-29 Thread Manuel Acosta
I'm still trying to egg one of my students into doing this. But he
might be in trouble for riding up Mt.Hamiliton after school. He posted
it about it so I quote:

Most supidest thing ive EVER doen: so it was late after school today
and i decided to go for a ride next thing i know is that i feel good
and decide to go for longer. I ended up doing Mt.Hamilton in a dark
decent... There was still snow in the summit and all i had was a tank
and t-shirt over it. No beanie no full finger gloves no jacket
nothing! It was dark and i was half was down the decent. Have you guys
head of albino killers in that county?? Well i have and i was cared
out of my mind! Never doing that again! Plus i get home and i get in
trouble.

These kids now a days, I wonder where they get these outragest ideas.
BTW I'll be riding my non-fender college road bike. Look for me in
splats and rain jacket. Stephen and William I'll see you there. 71
miles in the rain sounds fun.

2012-03-29 Thread rob markwardt
Do you mean your pump isn't long enough to fit under the top...or is
the bottom top tube longer? What are the lengths of the two tubes?
I've got a boatload of pumps that should work on one of them.

[RBW] Re: Freddie Hoffman's HANDLEBARS

I read this issue last night and couldn't find any reference to a
specific model. In the Freddies Gear article it refers to them as
steel roadster style. Fun reading though...what's he up to today?
