[RBW] Looking for the bag that tops the Platrack

2012-06-24 Thread Bob
Recently ordered the Nitto Platrack, which is facing extinction, and would
like one of those roundish bags that Rivendell made just for it (forget the
name). Anybody be willing to sell me one? I have a US as well as a UK
address you could mail it to, whichever's closer to you.

Cheers,
Bob

Road, Homer, Roadeo, Bleriot, etc.

My '95 Road Standard is a 56 measured center to top (about 54 center to
center), and has a 57 top tube. This frame is maybe 2 cm smaller, the head
lugs nearly touch and there's no room for a pump peg, so I'd say 54 center to
top. My head tube is 14 cm, but the one in the listing lacks the extension
above the upper head lug, so an 11 cm head tube adds up. It has enough
headset spacers to make up for the missing extension. If the top tube is
really 57, it may have been a custom geometry. Or it got changed when the
frame was rebuilt.

I think it's unlikely that the replacement front end has the original 753
tubing. Riv's 753 tubes were drawn to Grant's specifications with thicker
walls and longer butts than a standard 753 set, and by 2003 even standard 753
was obsolete. It could have 853 tubes, or True Temper. Fork blades, probably
whatever Waterford was using at the time, probably not 531. At least it still
has the pretty lugs and head badge.

Picky detail - note that in picture 21, the Simplex binder bolt is not
installed correctly. The flats should be vertical, so the nut sits fully
inside the lug.

I have a PBH similar to the original poster's and a 57 top tube would be way
too long for me.

I think whether the Baggins HbarBag and Li'l Loafer work together or not
is (practically speaking) sensitive to stem-versus-rack height. With a big
frame and/or a tall stem, it can work. I have both a big frame (60cm
Hillborne) and a tall stem and the modern versions of those bags (BarSack
and TrunkSack Smalll) work fine. I don't have perfectly clear access to the
TrunkSack. But fundamentally I can get at it, even without removing the
BarSack. I have to peel back the top and approach the contents from an
angle. (Peeling back the top may be more tedious with the Li'l Loafer, as
its top peels toward the head tube.) With a 52cm Hillborne and a slammed
stem, I'm doubt it'd work at all.

 Picture to show:

You can adjust things to your favor a little by angling the

Beautiful simple wisdom, thank you.

I have already done some epic rides this warm season including Ride the

far was with my granddaughter Kiana.

She has been a bicycle riding fanatic this summer. This ride was around the
local college campus and she was the ride leader. I took the Quickbeam and
just followed her delightful ramblings around the sidewalks. She kept
pointing out important things like flowers and fountains. Yes, ride with
them and enjoy yourself indeed.

2012-06-24 Thread Lawnsbyt

I'm also an 82 cm PBH and I ride a 56 Ram, the fit is spot on. I paid
1200 through Craigslist for the full bike 3 years ago, it had a
couple of good sized nicks and needed tires, it had about 3000 miles
on it when I bought it. The grease was pretty shot and i ended up
paying my lbs for an overhaul too, so the entry price has stacked up
some. Regarding the Romulus, it might be a tad high in this economy
but expect to pay more through an LBS than a private seller would ask
for.

You oculd title that as a ride for the unracer to go with one of the
themes in Just Ride. My wife I have a favorite loop that's in the
low 20ish miles. We allow 3 hours so we can stop at several vista
points, etc. Quality is more interesting than quantity.

As always, great pix that convey the flavor of the ride.

[RBW] Re: [650B] ISO: lycra shorts without the diaper pad...

2012-06-24 Thread Bruce Herbitter
I've picked up a few pairs of Ibex Duo shorts on Ebay and used a thread
puller from the sewing chest to remove the pads. I really like them with
RBW wool boxers or wicking fitness base layers (no center bottom seam) from
BCG or UnderArmor. Joneswares cycling shorts come without a chamois unless
you specify adding one, but they seem to be taking a Rambouillet like nap
at present.

On Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 10:53 AM, Rick Johnson rickcjohns...@gmail.comwrote:

I've also been on that same quest recently. The trend appears to be that
the descriptive term chamois has been co-opted to mean anything with a
diaper pad so one can't properly search for a real (or synthetic) chamois.

The latest avenue I've been on has been the tri shorts direction. Since
they are intended for running and swimming as well as cycling the padding
is smaller, thinner and more breathable.
Still not quite the old school favorite but the closest I've found so far.

I've been looking for some new lycra cycling shorts with a traditional
thin pad - like the synthetic chamois that was commonly used before they
 all went diaper-active.

I found some nice shorts with a Nalini pad a couple of months ago at Excel
Sports, and I ordered a pair to try, thinking I'd get more if they were all
right. Yeah, they're quite all right... and now they're no longer
 available. Geesh.

 Any suggestions?

 Thanks in advance,
 Ed.

I've thrown together the following very rough route, passing through all

them on to me?

If you live near some of these places, and would like to join, please let

Cool design allows brake pad to swing clear of fork blade so you can stuff

$70 shipped in Cont US for the pair.
