[RBW] Re: Any new Riv roadish bike on the horizon?

2012-12-20 Thread Noah Deuce
Michael,

I have a 700 Hilsen.
As a side note, don't be afraid to follow Riv sizing conventions. I'm 5'8", 30"
inseam, not oddly proportioned, and I ride a 61cm. And I'm riding clipless with
my cleats shoved all the way back in the slot, so my saddle height isn't
artificially high.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ram/Roadeo/other roady build lists and photos?

2012-12-20 Thread Noah Deuce
A friend described my Hilsen setup as the "full Grant," and that's basically
true in the cockpit: Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem, Nitto Mustache handlebars, a
two-bolt Nitto seatpost, and a Rivet Cycles Pearl saddle (which is awesome, by
the way). Tektro/Silver brakes.

Wheels are 32h Chris King hubs laced to DT-Swiss double eyelet 1.1 rims.
Fantastic wheelset, built for me by Dave Chase at Redstone Cyclery in Lyons,
CO.

Drivetrain is a little different. 46 tooth single front ring, 11-32 9spd
cassette, with a short cage SRAM X9 Type 2 rear derailleur shifted by a Silver
friction shifter.

I took a chance on the derailleur-shifter combo, since Riv says the Silver
shifters don't work with the SRAM mountain derailleurs. And this works awesome!
Absolutely no shifting problems, and I love love love that I never have chain
slap - the roller clutch in the derailleur controls things even on the
gnarliest of gravel roads/railroad crossings/uneven pavement.

[RBW] Re: Any new Riv roadish bike on the horizon?

2012-12-20 Thread grant
On the mid-back burner is a model of limited appeal because it'll come only
in a 67cm with a 6-deg upsloping TT---a Sammish bike but a hair beefier and
in a few ways NOT a Sam. Working name, which I won't have the cajones to go
thru with, is the Clem Smith Jr. (the "Smitty"?) At this stage of
development, that is what I'm calling it. It's like a superbeefy Sam for
the tall and beefy hillbilly who doesn't sell enough pelts and gin and baby
pigs to afford a custom. But it will be a super neat bike---with
differences that make sense in a hugey, and still with the normal stuff we
gotta have in all our bikes. Yes, lugs, etc.
It may be a year and a half out. We aren't sure where it makes sense to
make it---Taiwan or WF or Nobi---cost varies, and there are mins to
consider and cash flow and timing and all the fun stuff that rule our world
here---but BIKEWISE, it'll be neat. This is a "roadish" bike, but here
that means any road, even road that aren't "country maintained."

It was 30 degrees at 8 this morning in Walnut Creek, and 15 higher up
on Mt Diablo. I suggest starting at 10 am to give folks some time to
gather and for it to warm up a bit, but maybe 9 am would work too. RBW
will be closed, so meeting at BART might make the most sense. Pleasant
Hill BART is more bike friendly than Walnut Creek BART, and it's
adjacent to a MUP that can take us to the foot of the mountain with
minimal traffic.

Snow is forecast for the top of Diablo this weekend. I don't know the
forecast for Jan 1st yet, but you might bring tire chains just in
case.

I have a 31" or 79 cm PBH (30" inseam pants) and ride a 54 AHH. My
saddle height is 69 cm. With a 61 cm seat tube and 170 mm cranks that
amounts to 61+17cm=78 cm of crank length to the top of the seat tube,
which would give me a 1cm seat + seatpost height (impossible for me).
Does your 30" inseam translate to a ~86 cm PBH?

I must thin more closely about a 1XN drivetrain. Tell me: does the Ram
have dt shifter bosses, or just housing stops? (I would have to
saw/file/dremel/and twist the left stop off.)

(Juuust kidding, Steve.)

In other news: talked at length yestiddy to a roadie employed by local
high end shop Fat Tire here on our westside. He told me he had ridden
some shop blowouts (no pun intended) of very high end and delicate
("800 miles") racing tubs all around town for 6-8 months and that the
Stan's had made this trouble free. Except! That Stan's will within 3-4
months coagulate and clump into little golf balls at one place in the
tire, thus causing a weight imbalance. Add more Stan's as required by
instructions and you gradually get larger golf balls. Still, I think
my plan, to go sew up if I can do so on the cheap, is a reasonable
one. Shop has "good" Vittorias for $35 and high end ones for $60.

I suggest taking the build list and the frame to your LBS and asking. My
guess is that some of the new parts won't be 100% compatible with the older
frame, and your LBS should be able to help you fill in the gaps.

would love to have more than one pair. Color unimportant.

[RBW] Re: Sam Build on Univega Frame?

2012-12-20 Thread Garth

Do talk your shop Chris, but you won't have too many problems if any. You
may not be able to use as wide as tires as a Sam, but for the most part
you'll be fine :)
here's a photo I found online of the frame for everyone . This one has DC
980- canti's and Sugino AT triple so you'll have no issues with "modern"
canti's or cranks. http://www.flickr.com/photos/rese_arch/7175121318/

Many, many thanks! If and when I jetison them, I will be sure to pass

[RBW] extra long seat post => hard to budge??

2012-12-20 Thread ted
Does having a lot of post down in the seat tube make it more prone to
sticking?
I went to adjust a post on a recent acquisition yesterday, and found I
couldn't budge it. I thought perhaps I had a dreaded "stuck post". So
I pulled the clamp bolt out, flexed the clamp ears a bit, applied some
penetrating oil and left it for later. Today I put a b-17 on it
adjusted square to the axis and with a lot of effort got the thing to
twist a bit. Since is was so hard to budge I figured I better pull it
all the way out. Turns out it's really long, like you could run close
to a foot of post showing long.
Could it being so long have contributed to my difficulty adjusting it?

Re: [RBW] extra long seat post => hard to budge??

2012-12-20 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I'd say, "no sh*t"! Ask me how I know!

The shite Big 5 cruiser I just turned into something rideable for a
charity recipient (thanks to those who donated parts for the cause)
had a (expletive deleted), low end, 300 mm suspension post shoved
through a shim and all the way down until the clamp bottomed out on
the frame. Getting that POS out was a real chore! (It was replaced by
a very nice 27.0 Ritchey Force sp very strangely cut down to about 100
mm long (that's right), but as the recipient is short, this worked
well.)

[BTW: here it is, both before and after.

https://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/BIKESMISCELLANEA#5823820300053057762]

Patrick Moore, who just found that a 25.4 mm seatpost works fine in a
25.0 seat tube with the addition of grease and a mallet.

not really ... as long it was greased.

I've found my Bombadil frame is much snugger fitting than any other frame I
have had. Long or short seatpost ... it's a pita to move around . So it's
likely more the steel tubing variation you are experiencing .

[RBW] Raffle winner represent

2012-12-20 Thread Allan in Portland
I had been trying to decide whether to start this topic. Seeing the
direction the "new Riv" thread went, it seems I'm not alone thinking along
the same lines.

So, what is your custom idea?

Mine is a thin-wall, low-trail Saluki. (Would Grant do a low-trail custom?
I think he would.) Hard part is the color. I loved the Bean & Grey Hunq,
both color and small touches like the seat stay tops and fork crown
details, but orange is pretty awesome too. And I'm not sure a custom in the
colors of a stock model is proper etiquette. I'm sure Grant knows ;-), but
anyone else venture an opinion?

And hey, even if you didn't enter, feel free to share.

Merry Christmas,
-Allan

[RBW] Re: Raffle winner represent

2012-12-20 Thread Michael

Frame and fork:
I would ask Rivendell for the lightest, fastest FF I could get that would
let them still sleep well at night.

Paint:
Traced lugs/crown, cream headtube, and a very dark greenish/blueish
patchwork plaid type color, or , whatever was available from their custom
color charts. If not plaid, then some kinda metallic aqua color, but with
the biggest sparkles (metal flake?) I could get that would still allow
Rivendell employees sleep well at night.

Build:
Nitto, Nitto, Nitto, Brooks, Brooks, drivetrain up to the advice of Riv.
Gearing light for hills. MKS Touring Pedals. Bar ends, Shimano brake
levers. Toss up for Paul Racers or Silver-type Sidepulls - whatever is more
fail-proof and easier to fix on the road. Wheels up to Rivendell, but husky
enough so that they could still sleep well at night and I could mount
30-something mm tires with enough clearance for fenders.

Eyelets/Braze-ons:
As many as they could sqeeze in, and still be able to sleep at night. I
would *not *use them for racks, I just like to attach things to 'em (like
fenders and extra tail lights and a Gino mount for a headlight.). I
would use a saddle bag and two Nitto bottle holders.
