RE: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Appaloosa
I have one of the so-called Mystery Bikes, and I believe it's the same as the Appaloosa (a genius name, in my opinion). And as to whether they're coming out, GP told me this fall that he wants to bring it out as a production bike, but is assessing demand. But all kidding aside: I see peeps referring to a Bosco Bike, a Mystery Bike, and this Apaloosa bike. 1. Are they the same thing, just different names because no official one came out yet? They all have tentacular stays? In that case, they could call it the Nemo, or something. 2. Are these protos of some new bike soon to come? When I changed jobs and moved to a new location, the feeble braking of the DL-1 and the steep hill with a traffic light at an intersection with one of the busiest streets in downtown Washington DC necessitated a change of bikes; and although the clothing I wore at work hadn't changed, the new bike and its different riding position meant I could no longer wear work clothes while riding, so I switched to carrying work clothes in panniers. I'd been a recreational rider for many years by then, and had a large supply of used cycling clothing, mostly worn out and not quite fit for long weekend duty. So I wore that, adding Army surplus: sweaters, wool field trousers and work gloves for the cold weather. I see all sorts of people wearing all sorts of clothing and they're enjoying themselves. I don't go swimming much, but every time I have done I've always seen people wearing bathing suits, not jeans and t shirts. Similarly, although you don't need a baseball glove when you're playing stick ball, you definitely do need one when you switch to hardball. You pretty much need a baseball cap, too, otherwise you can't see anything when you're looking into the sun. So, is that stuff clothing or is it specialized sporting equipment? As children did we concern ourselves ever about what we wearing outside or in ? Yes, of course. Perhaps your parents did not dress you in a winter coat that was so heavy and stiff it left you with your arms sticking out straight to the sides like a gingerbread man, unable to bend down, to move your arms or do much other than stand around posing. When I was a kid, it was common for parents to send their children out to play with last year's outgrown shoes as their play shoes. Ever try to play baseball in a pair of leather soled dress shoes? It was absolutely fabulous when I got a pair of high top sneakers! I don't know if the thinking at Rivendell has changed, but Grant's original vision for this storied frame was free of a front derailer: [It's] basically a flat-to-rolling land bike that, by virtue of its superlong top tube (62.5cm on this 54.3cm frame), locks you into a sweeepyback bar. I woe jeans swimming most of my childhood. Jean shorts at least! There's a marked difference between the swim suit you probably wear and the one Michael Phelps wears, including the hat, goggles, hairless body, etc. to lump things into two categories is silly and reductive. There's a gradient of clothes, gear, cycles, destinations/purpose of ride, etc. Hopefully you fit all of them together into a combination that works for you. These combinations obviously change when one or more aspects change and you can go from a morning commuter on a drop bar bike who changes in the office bathroom to a late night bar hopper in casual clothes heading to the bar. Maybe the same person who outs on their spandex on the weekend rides their Raleigh 3 speed in a suit and tie come Monday. Seasons and weather are just another part of the equation to consider. Getting into the weeds of classification is divisive and fairly pointless. -J, in PHL -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Anyone tried adding a larger sprocket to a 7-speed cassette?
Lead pipe Grand Prix. Nottingham May '76. Bought it at the West End bike shop in Nashville that fall when I attended Vandy. But it's still not that bad - rigged out it's a 25-lb.bike, and it's carried my 200+ lbs for 37 years. Of course always stored indoors. It's had steady rebuilds over the years. Climbing TX hills, the original splined crank stripped out early. At the UT Co-op bike shop, all the employers were racers, they won parts and sold them in the shop for cheap. So I bought the Sugino Mighty Comp. Then had a set of wheels built on Zeus Grand Sport hubs with Rigida 1320s. It's these wheels that make the bike. The builder reversed the spokes to make them stronger for my large size, and I'm still riding them - in fact, whatever he did make a granite set of lightweight wheels (I rub the carbon steel spokes with Boeshield) . (Recently bought a NOS set of 1320s and some decent used Campy wide flange GS hubs and have a second set of wheels with cross tires for when ride ranch roads.) Shimano 600 Arabesque derailleurs, and most recently my upright rebuild with Tecnomic, Moustache and bar-end - still with my Zeus levers. In fact the only original parts on the bike are the headset (still great) and Weinmann center pulls. Found my TA Grand Sport chainrings in Germany for $60 total, and love my 9 useful gears (the overlap is the 28 rear on either chainring), but the 9 evenly-spaced gears are great. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/araleigh003-1.jpg Sorry, the photo doesn't show my new 46 front. It has plenty of marks in the paint, but what's left still takes a wax and looks striking even with its mars. If I ever get around to repainting it, I stole a set of Zeus dropouts on ebay and will also have lugs added. I used the long stays on my Nitto front, and Acorn leather washers to fill the gap between the dropout lugs and forks. In fact, I've become an Acorn leather washer junkie - I''ve found a thousand M5 uses for them. The shorty fenders are the alloy Blumels, which also look pretty cool - and they keeps the brakes clean. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aaPB210006.jpg My real bike money goes into my daughter's bike, though I will eventually have an AHH. But my lead pipe Grand Prix is still a cozy ride. On Monday, December 31, 2012 9:21:15 AM UTC-6, Tom Harrop wrote: Yep, for some people it's definitely necessary to optimize gearing. Tom, If that broken bolt is still stuck in the hourglass braze-on, you can carefully drill it out using a #19 or 11/64 drill. Go slowly and use a few drops of oil (Phil Tenacious works as a decent cutting oil in a pinch). After drilling, run your trusty M5 tap through (again, carefully with oil) to clean up the threads. [RBW] Appaloosa - front derailleur preferred
I think the Appaloosa looks great and love its name and having toured on a long TT Atlantis with 17 cm stem and Bosco bars, I think the Appaloosa would be a versatile, comfortable, and fun bike. Given all that, I would be annoyed by difficulty in mounting a front derailleur on the bike. I would want to use the bike for everything, and that includes big hills. That photo of the yellow Appaloosa stirred these thoughts. I suppose it wouldn't be hard to add a clamp-on cable stop to the downtube, but I still don't understand the value of not having front dérailleur capability built-in as a part of the bike. -Jim W. [RBW] Re: Anyone tried adding a larger sprocket to a 7-speed cassette?
Wow! That has to be the nicest looking GP from that era that I've seen. I'm really fond of mine too, but it was in pretty awful condition when I got hold of it a few years ago, so most of the original parts were rusted and had to go, except the headset. While I'm not the target buyer for this sort of bike I have to say 'YEAH! to Grant for coming up with a nice name - Appaloosa. I may be in the minority here but names like Homer Hilsen, Bosco, Gomez... do nothing for me. The bikes are GREAT but the names - to me - are a let down. With Appaloosa I picture a beautiful, elegant animal. With Homer Hilsen I picture someone's next door neighbor - nice guy maybe but I don't want his name on my bike. Again, not saying the bikes aren't nice - I think the Hilsen is great. Just not so much the names of fictional people. Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Appaloosa
Single-speeds, three-speeds, IGHs of all kinds, 1xXs, etc., all prove there are markets for bikes without a front derailer (infact, many different markets). In comparison to many common limitations on bikes, not having a front derailer is hardly radical: MCRBs that can't fit tires wider that 23mm (Or can't fit fenders!) Fixed-gears that can't coast Handlebars that can't be raised etc As to the question of hills and touring, despite calling out fixed-gears in my list above, I've done a lot of fixed-gear touring, including cross-country. That may disqualify me from saying this, but touring with a 24t on your triple in the front may be desirable for some, but is it really necessary for many-geared tourists with wide range cassettes? How about the 48t? A wide range 1x8, 1x9, 1x10, or 1x11 with a 36t up front would be more than adequate for most tourists, covering a range between 30 gear-inces and 90 gear-inches. Anyway, I'm excited for something different. NY is a city that isn't San Francisco, I think at least from looking out the window, and is pretty flat, again that window is coming in handy today. I am not a geography expert but I have to assume that there are plenty of other cities that aren't full of hills where someone could really have a lot of fun with this bike. Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Appaloosa
I'm guessing meeting the right price point is the trick on this one. *Most *everybody here could be talked into getting one as an extra/fun bike if the price were right. Plus it would be a GREAT first bike for a LOT of people who just need something to ride to Trader Joe's, go to the movies, take a package to the PO, cruise the promenade. But those folks probably don't want to put a lot of money out for a bike, which is the conundrum. Me, I'd like to see the top tube disappear and come out with a mixte version. Or incorporate some of it's features (horizontal drop outs, shallow seat tube, lng virtual top tube) into the existing mixtes. hi Tom, Nitto M 18. I ordered the long Nitto stays from Rivendell. In fact they were out of stock when I inquired with Spenser. He gave me an estimate of when they would restock, and contacted me when they arrived. Spenser has always done extremely well by me, his kind of service will keep me buying there. I did have to cut about an inch from the long stays for my set-up. Let us not forget that fixed gear drivetrains are the default, norm, benchmark, archetype, and fundamental and natural reference point for all cycling. Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Appaloosa
I would be a buyer if the price was in a good spot. Currently have my '94 XO-4 set up as a Alba bar grocery getter / front mount baby hauler and have been thinking about setting up a Sam similarly as a replacement. The XO-4 has a 56 c-t seat tube and a 60.5 TT. The Appaloosa seems like a better bet for me than the Sam or the XO-4. Even though I live in Marin a wide rear cassette with an appropriate single ring up front would work for me as an around town and family ride bike. Don't really want to head in the cargo bike direction so this frame looks very interesting. Hoping it becomes a real model in the Riv lineup. [RBW] Re: New Betty Foy frame: trouble getting bolts into brazeons
Gernot, As others have already said, best use an M5 tap. Every workshop should have one. Always use a proper 'T' handle and chuck (I think General Tools make a nice small one) and proceed carefully. Don't use excessive force and remember that you are clearing existing threads - not trying to cut new ones! A few drops of oil on the tap and in the screw hole are a 'must-do' and always proceed on the basis of one turn in, half-a-turn back (or half in, 1/4 back if it's really tight). This helps to clear the threads and avoid biding and breakages! Savvas (who has broken too many bike bits...) [RBW] Re: Anybody have great (or lousy) experience with waterproof iPhone5 mounts on your Riv? I need ones to investigate (and ones to avoid)
I work at a shop that sells the Topeak drybag cases for the iphone 4. They seem like a good affordable option that can stand up to a little spray too. I particularly like that they don't require the phone to be in a special (read: bulky) case to clip into a mount. I have my phone in a sleeve case and don't want to wrangle it into a case every time I want to have the phone on my ride. The bag is nice that you can just slide the phone in and go. The plastic would likely protect the phone some should it fall, and the mount can be attached to the stem to have the phone centered in the cockpit: nice! I've ordered one for my iphone 5 and will report back my initial impressions. I found the mid 80's frame which I had very well adapted to my needs, a 28' wheeled sports-tourer with room for up to 32mm tires (with fenders), long enough chainstays to have fenders and carry luggage on racks but still with side pull-brakes (47-57 reach) and double crankset, the fork even with eyelets for lowrider though I never used them. Besides doing all my commutes with it I also travelled a lot on it, always with just two panniers and a handlebar bag. I did a lot of brevets and several week-long tours (with camping gear) with that frame, and though not the lightest and maybe a little on the flexy side there was nothing really to complain about. Since the accident I try to find something similar and Rivendell has made some bikes in the past that seem to be what i am looking for, or at least come very close to what I search for. As I hope to find amongst you the real connaiseurs of this brand I would like to know which of the Rivendell frames (also former ones) comes closest to my demands in your opinion so that I can look for an occasion to try to find one in my size (PBH 84cm). [RBW] WTT - fat tires for chubby
Hi all, after another rear Pasela sidewall fail, I'm left with a ton of tires that are too fat for a fendered Quickbeam. What I want is a set of high-quality chubby road tires in the 32-40mm range. Kojaks, JB Greens, narrower MSupremes, etc. What I have to trade is here: http://www.biketinker.com/ If you'd like to trade money instead of tires, I'm open to offers, and I'll use the $$ to buy tires from Riv, or the list. Sets of Marathons (47mm), Marathon Supremes (technically fit a QB, not really), Big Apples (2.35), Kenda Kewsts (40mm - fit a fendered QB), IRC Mythos CX-slicks (worn rear, less worn front - fit a fendered QB), and one lone 650B marathon. Also a lone All-Terrainasaurus, but it's on the bike right now. I'd like to keep the Marathon Supremes, since they're so nice, but they don't allow sand to pass between the chainstay and the tire. It's a chopper, and it does what choppers do: Cruise calmy along the waterfront with hands lightly resting on bars that reach *way* back. [RBW] Re: FS/slightly OT: 66cm Takara Overland Fixed Gear + extras (geared setup)--$350
Bump diddly ump Didn't get any hits on this the first go around, I'd still sell it as per the above but now I'm also open to parting it out. So, if you're interested in any of the parts on the bike or discussed above, hit me up! On Thursday, December 6, 2012 11:37:02 AM UTC-8, Jeremy Till wrote: (x-post from iBob, apologies if you see it twice). Hey Folks- Need to free up space and capital for other bike projects, so I've decided to sell my Takara Overland. It is currently setup as kind of a townie-fixed gear, built on a frame designed for loaded touring. Since I've recently acquired a Quickbeam for fixed gear townie duties, I don't really need this anymore. I bought it used a couple of years ago, built up as a full on loaded tourer, and to sweeten the deal on the bike I will included the 7spd (FW) rear wheel, shifters and derailleurs, so you can convert it back to a geared bike if you so desire. Pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85709120@N07/sets/72157632186942080/ The details: -Frame measures 66cm c-c seat tube, 57cm top tube, parallel 73 degree angles. Great for big guys looking for a true fistful of seatpost fit! The tubing stickers say 4130, and if I had to guess I'd say it was straight-gauge--this thing is definitely not a lightweight. Designed for 27 wheels with cantilever brakes. -48cm Salsa Woodchipper handlebars with 150mm pre-QBP (i.e., Hecho en Petaluma!) Salsa Quill Stem with brake hsg stop and cable roller. It took some doing to get this bar in this stem, so there are some scratches under the tape. -Dia-compe canitlever brakes with Tektro R200 brake levers, Cane Creek gum hoods. -Rear wheel is Origin8 branded Formula sealed bearing track hub, double-sided fixed threading, 126mm spacing, laced with 14g spokes to Sun CR18 27 (630mm bsd) rim. 17t and 19t cogs. -Front wheel is a generic Weinmann single wall 27 rim on Sansin hub. -Tires are 27x1 1/4 (630x32mm) Schwalbe Marathons with very few miles on them. -Crankset is a Sugino GT 110x74 triple, currently running a single 40t chainring. 115mm Shimano UN-54 BB with 2mm spacer under driveside cup for proper chainline. -Dimension pedals. -WTB Speed V seat on Kalloy seatpost. -SKS P45 fenders. Not on the bike, but I will include-- -Original Jim Blackburn silver alloy rear rack. -7spd freewheel rear wheel, which matches the front--Weinmann single-wall rim with Sansin hub. Shimano Freewheel. -Original Shimano Deerhead Deore F + R derailleurs, Suntour Symmetric Shifters for single-bolt mounting on top of the DT. (Note: one of the shifter pivot bolts might be stripped). -Original triple chainrings- 50/45/28 Note: The frame isn't perfect. The rear dropouts aren't perfectly parallel, the fork alignment is a little bit off. The canti posts are positioned such that it's hard to use any other brakes than the ones that are on there, and you definitely couldn't fit 700c wheels unless you cut them off and used caliper brakes. There are a couple of scratches and tiny dings. At one point, a previous owner clamped a kickstand to the chainstays, and chainstays are minorly dented and paint is stripped there. However, given the general beefyness of this frame, all of this never worried me one bit. I meant to fix this up and return it to geared setup before selling it, but it looks like I'm just not going to have the time. As a result of all this, I'm offering first and foremost to BOBs, RBW list folks, and other bike geeks who can understand it's not perfect and see the potential in it anyways, especially given its uniquely large size and some of the cool parts. Asking $350, with reasonable offers accepted. Ideally, i'd like to sell it local to somebody in the SF Bay Area, but if you aren't local and really want it, we'll work out a deal to ship it. [RBW] Ending the year off right.
Finished the year with an overnight bike camping trip with the Venturing crew near Mt.Tam. Interesting that just four years ago these same students never rode further then their home town. Now they're off climbing Mt.Tam and getting lost in the Marin Headlands. Best quote by one of them explains his thoughts on the trip. The desire to eat processed food and going to have fun at man made roller coasters is gone. Nature itself is a roller coaster that provides the best of mental and physical nutrition. Some highlights of the trip. - Getting to the top of the West Point Inn and playing horse shoes. - Descending into Muir Beach with the sun just about setting. - Meeting up with Jim Thill on his solo bike trip around the marin headlands. - Forgetting spoons and eating oatmeal with beaf jerky. [RBW] Porteur Rack experts needed
I finally got a large basket from Riv and its too big to fit on my little Soma front rack AND have room in front for the dyno headlamp (the medium is fine, but a little small). I thought a great platform for the basket would be the Soma Porteur Rack because I could even put little panniers on there in a pinch. I'd also save a bit of money if I do that rather than get the huge Nitto front rack. [RBW] Re: Anyone tried adding a larger sprocket to a 7-speed cassette?
As I said, I've become a junkie for Acorn leather washers. Here is the leather washer spacing between the front dropout lug and long rack stay http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aPC310001_zps0b48a01f.jpg and a novel use for them - on the Bell 11 from Rivbike, it dampens out 90% of the road shock rings, and makes a nice bridge for your thumb http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aPC310003_zps612f1b6c.jpg To adjust fender spacing on my daughter's bike, I used a long M5 and a stack of spacers with a long M5 going into the bottom bracket boss http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aPC310005_zps1ce74da2.jpg And attaching stays to frame bosses, it absorbs misalignment, distributes the contact stress, and as it compresses it becomes a lock washer http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aPC310007_zps9c95e0d7.jpg and of course the obvious spot on a fender stay http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/aPC310008_zps3883f578.jpg apologize for the welded aluminum frame, but my daughter is riding 20 miles and climbing hills on her Nexus 8 - with a slight modification - I reduced her front chainwheel to 42 and increased her rear sprocket to 26, keeping the same chain length and turning her bottom two gears into tree climbers. [RBW] Re: Porteur Rack experts needed
The baskets Riv sells are just the basket... no struts or attachment hardware. The Soma Porteur Rack is a nice rack. I don't own one myself but a buddy has one and uses it to support his basket. It seems like a great rack. The one thing I'll warn you about is that the SPR comes with hardware to attach to the axle. My buddy did a hack so it attaches to the eyelets instead... a better set-up in my opinion. I've never paid much attention to how it's on there but my buddy has a light mounted to one of the vertical struts. I would consider an SPR if I need a front rack. [RBW] First RBW visit
After about 9 years of being a Riv fan/rider/dealer, I made my first visit to Riv today. I walked into the showroom, and there is Grant sitting at a table in the middle of the room having an intense discussion with a Frenchish sorta man who I presume to be Yves Gomez. Unfortunately Grant wasn't available to chitchat, but Mark and Brian invited me in for coffee and to talk shop. What a great bunch! Brian gave me some instruction about where to camp in the Diablo foothills nearby. Surely I bungled his directions, but I think I found a pretty good spot on the top of a big hill. The view is nice, but the sun just set, and it's getting chilly. I guess I'll set up my tent. Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Appaloosa
I went by Riv HQ today and rode the Appaloosa. I assure you it was delightful. It's a dynamite bike unlike any other bike I've ever ridden. Those that say they don't get it have it 100% correct. They fail to understand what it is, and what it is for. Open your mind a little and at least I think you can appreciate what it is, even if you don't want one. The highlights for me are the three utterly unique lengths of the Appaloosa 1. The top tube is so freaking long that you still have room to live even with swept back bars. Bars that sweep back a foot and you still can't hit your knees on the barcon shifters! 2. The Bosco Bars that are obviously ideal for it do have a ton of room for lots of hand positions 3. The 56cm chainstays (56!) give it a swoopy cadillac road feel that was just awesome. It's really hard not to giggle when riding it. Don't even consider it if you don't want your bike to make you smile. [RBW] Re: Porteur Rack experts needed
Hi Phillip, It would, but I'm thinking that bike camping wise, it would strain the little front rack quite a lot. It can't really hold much weight, you see. The porteur rack is probably a bit overkill, but it's also versatile with the pannier mounts, large platform, and center oriented light mount. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I think that maybe I'M the target market! Now that I know what the mystery bike is all about, it's giving me serious pause. Grant, it's cool. I'll just have to visit again sometime! I'm camped just around the corner from RBW now. I'm having a great trip. Manny is great, as are some new friends I met through him. Turns out a lady I've known since kindergarten lives here, in Danville. Her last name was Thomas back then, so we always sat next to each other in school. I'm going to have breakfast with her in the morning. Hopefully she's not too shocked at how stinky I've become in the two decades since we've seen each other! Then a bit later I meet up with another semi-local character I know through the Internet. That means I won't be on the official Diablo ride at 9:30, but I have some faith that I'll intersect with that group at some point during the day's meanderings. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
