2013-02-14 Thread Anne Paulson
Grant, thanks for the advice about CalTrain. Technically, you're not
allowed to take loaded touring bikes on CalTrain. That wouldn't
necessarily be a problem, but you're not allowed to take loaded
touring bikes on CalTrain because you'd have to carry them up and down
a steep narrow staircase, which I am not strong enough to do. I have
trouble carrying an empty bike down the Caltrain steps.

But I'll be there. I'll just ride over the bridge to Fremont. It's 30
miles, but it's 30 flat miles and half of it is along the creek and
through the Baylands, a ride I always enjoy. And since we're starting
in the afternoon, I'll have plenty of time.

[RBW] Re: RCW S24O Saturday-Sunday February 23-24

2013-02-14 Thread grant
The "classic" S24O is a stealthy, technically illegal, but not immoral or
unethical sleepout in the hills, and works easiest when everybody is tiny,
fast, wears black hoodies, and can pedal over rice paper without ripping
it. This ideal is never achieved, but the image of it is good to keep in
mind as the group gets bigger. There have been cutbacks in rangership due to
budget cuts, and that plays well for us illegals for sure, but there's no
guarantee. Pick a route (Tony? Manny?) and it'll be neat! There are
reservable legal campsites.

For a smooth takeoff, it'll be good for all who go to be camping gear
independent (I posted my recommended gear checklist a few days ago, but of
course it's totally personal. It's super handy to know how to set up the
tent you're sleeping in, and to have stakes for it. Spikey stakes will work
better than the big yellow ones, unless have something to pount them in
with. Liesl, tell me what you'll need to borrow, and tentwise---you'll get
all the help you need (way too much trouble to haul all the gear needed for
an S24O).

Anne, there is CalTrain to SF, then BART. I've taken CalTrain only once and
don't know any more about it than that it goes between the SoBay and
SF...but I hope you get a ride!

Mark referred to two small panniers that he thought would work now. One
was an Ortlieb model but I forget what it is. The other, I don't even
remember the brand. Some help I am.

My plan is to build my own sleeping bag and thermarest retention units to
mount to the HA Racks. Between corroplast and webbing, it's a fair weather
S24O kind of solution.

Since I'm a compulsive bag-matcher I'm certain I'll nab some Sackville
branded micro panniers when they appear. I did not press Mark for an ETA
on those.

On the rough stuff bike, I always have one as well, but usually keep it in

I need to figure a way to edit the original post to take out the payment

[RBW] Re: Staff Bikes - Mark's Bontrager

2013-02-14 Thread Tim Tetrault
I want a Bontrager Privateer pretty bad. Those frames were really cool, and
Bontrager seems to be kind of retro in his stylings before Trek perhaps
drove a dumptruck full of cash up to his house. Or is the story different?
Anyone know how Trek came to acquire the name?

[RBW] Re: Forward rocking vibration with long reach brakes

Jim, that self canceling phenomenon can really be the fly in the ointment
when it comes to diagnosis. Well said. And kudos to you for lubing the
threads before retightening, I recently learned that this can help the
fastener bite its match with greater ease, leaving things even tighter.

Patrick- I think I agree, if your frame is a good fit. Threadless stems can
be affordable to experiment with.

[RBW] Re: RCW S24O Saturday-Sunday February 23-24

2013-02-14 Thread Liesl
Anne, *clearly* you are a Warrior! This is getting to be pretty dang fun!
Okay, for those of you who are following this (apparently rockin') thread:
mid-afternoon seems to be a winner for our South Bay contingency. So how
about congregating in the vicinity of/by 2:00PM sat afternoon (as in on
the 23rd/a week from this saturday) at Riv? I assume it's bike-time which
means things could be running behind. It would be helpful perhaps to know
who expects to be there so's we know when all the kittens are all
collected. I'll be there earlier, for sure.

Looks like Tony has a spot in mind, and Manny if we remind him of the
leash, and perhaps Jenny RCW West has a spot in mind, too. I think we
might just be able to decide on the fly, as it were, with the help of Riv
HQ folk. As longs as it's within an hour away as per Grant's wily advice I
bet we can manage.

How does this sound for an approximation of a Yabbut plan?

Mark told me the same thing that Grant posted on the Blug. The racks are
physically present at Riv HQ. They just want to wait for Nitto to finish

you called them, they might tell you something more accurate. I expect

Hey there!! Yea...I am the ground zero on the ACW. I might have a pin or

I have already consulted an embroidery company on doing patches after a
lengthy and fun chat with Harry Hugel at Rivendell. Jeeze, that was a year

embroiderer by trade so a patch was always on the burner. The pins were

SO that said...I'd be happy to do another lapel pin run, and or patch run,
IF I could come up with some officially non-official AND simple way to take
orders. Do any of you know an easy way to do this? The last time I took
email orders and it was crazy to keep track of as many people use different
emails for contact and paypal, not to mention screen names.

The solid brass cloisonné pins would need to bump from $6 to $8 if the
pricing is the same. They were spendy, and shipping was more than I
estimated. I just need to break even...these were for fun, not money. Patch
pricing TBD but is usually based on stitch count which is connected to
size. Which brings up a question...what size patch?? Based on the design

Too big?

Yes. The Platrack must have struts, but if you run those struts to the
dropout, then you can't put a pannier on the hub area rack. The Hub Area
Rack has a tab to attach an optional strut. I made my own custom strut to
reinforce the Platrack, using the tab on the HARack

Re: [RBW] Re: Inch equivalent of 650b?

2013-02-14 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Boy we make our world so confusing!!! Thankfully I can always consult
Sheldon Brown to keep all the various ETRTOs straight in my head.

For simplicity sake it can be useful to think of it in mountain bike terms,
where the world is largely divided up between 26 inch and 29 inch wheels,
with the new emerging (650B) standard splitting the difference at 27.5
inches.

They are not WTB tires (WTB stands for want to buy) They are Bruce Gordon
Rock 'n Road tires made in Japan by Panaracer.

They are great on the road - almost silent, not like bigger knobby tires

How are these WTBs on road, though? They look like they would act
knobbish...

FWIW these remind me of the Kenda K-rad tire, a great choice for 26 inch
tires... especially if you're riding mostly dirt.

like that small frame, double top tube combined with the color of the

Ely -- how much? It's still a bit low but if the price is right I can put
up with it (57").

One of my projects is to convert that very nice little front rack bag you
made for me into a small rear trunk bag (I've given up on front racks for
now). I think an internal stiffener (cut from an old detergent bottle) and
additional Velcro on the bottom will work. It is sized just right to carry
the rather bulky repair kit for the Fargo (including 4 tubes) -- and
matches my Ortliebs!

Thanks!

Much higher risk to get lost. I keep just the essentials and tie it up with
hemp twine and then use the strap through the twine. It takes a few extra

what's not to like about twine! Alas no shellac.

I would actually recommend against stashing a cellphone into the burrito
wrap - you'd be amazed how much vibration does come up through the frame
for anyone who tends to vector off onto trails and non-paved routes. I've
come home with all the screws rattled out of my reading glasses several
times.

Electronic gear and vibration is generally not a good combination. Camera
in the pocket seems to work best for me.

[RBW] Re: Luxos B dynamo light user review

2013-02-14 Thread Peter White
Putting the top of the beam 30 feet in front is viable if you're riding
slowly and using an older halogen headlight. But the newer lights, in
particular the latest Luxos headlights from Busch & Müller are far
brighter, and have very wide beams. So you can aim them higher and still
have plenty of light both close to the bike and at a distance.

See the photos of the beams I've posted here.

[RBW] Re: Water Gap Adventure Loop - April 13-14

2013-02-14 Thread Joe S
Bobby, this is a great ride.Unfortunately I plan to be in Florida on
those dates. I've been through there twice; camping in Worthington State
Forest where my wife and I spotted a bear meandering along the ridge line
up behind our campsite when we did a 3-day last summer. It definitely is
remote for its proximity to the urban areas of the northeast. I rode my
Atlantis and my wife her Betty Ford. We started out from the Myers Country
Motel and did a circle back to pick up our car. This is a family-run
business and they were very nice and accommodating, allowing us to leave
our car and pick it up when we came back. It rained hard the whole first
day but after that was nice.

I think your assessment is on the mark - one long hill climb (had trouble
both times following my maps nearby (on the Milford side). We rode the
Paulinskill Valley Trail last year. That was the first time for me. It
definitely is single track in places. It was difficult to find the point
at which we joined the trail and if it hadn't been for a kind-hearted local
rider we would have been on a local road (summer traffic, but good
shoulder/lane) most of the way up to Swartswood State Park where we spent a
night. There were a number of equestrian parties on the Paulinskill Trail
and it was muddy as a result of the rain. Not sure how that will be in
"mud season" as we used to refer to it in Vermont, but watch out for the
horse manure. My wife, who had not done any mountain biking, did well on
it with a moderately-loaded Betty Foy, but if it has been rainy or a lot of
late snow, you might want to reconsider the route.

All in all, a wonderful area. As you say, lots of places to enjoy in
Milford. All the best and I'm looking forward to the photos!

Joe

René, this is double Bumming me out because of the
south-bay-giving-anne-a-ride factor! What time does your flight arrive?
Argues for a short ride perhaps departing in the afternoon...does this

schedule from far away...but I think we can make it work if it's a modest
attempt; short ride sat afternoon, relaxed Sunday...I'll be staying with an
old friend in Walnut Creek Friday night and will have a rental car. I was

Re: [RBW] Re: Forward rocking vibration with long reach brakes

Ah HA! Thought so! I remember how, on Riv #1, I installed the lower race
bearing surface (steel "running surface" for the bottom bearings in the
aluminum cup) somehow upside down. I could not get the danged headset
adjusted properly: either it bound or it was loose -- and damned
frustrating.

I had to snug them up once or twice early in my ownership, but the Tange
Rollerball and Ultegra hs on the two later Rivs have kept their adjustment
for thousands of miles.

I must say however that overall I much prefer the threadless system --
once, that is, you have your bar position more or less dialed in.

I'd be interested to hear how the Marathon Green Guards ward off goatheads.
I know that a combination of extra thick "thorn proof" tubes, a belted
tire, and a thick Mr Tuffy strip can make a tire well-nigh immune, but at
the cost of any riding pleasure. I wonder if the MGGs roll decently yet
remain impervious?

Out here in ABQ, NM, local riders tell me that Stan's has "solved" the
goathead problem, even for tubular tires -- the downside is that it dries
out so that you eventually build up little 2 oz clumps of dried sealant in
your tire, how much depending on how long before you wear it out. I am
waiting for a discount bulk bottle to try in my tubs and also in my Big
Apple tubes. (I know that Stan's was developed for tubeless off road tires.)

That and they (Hetres) fit PERFECTLY under SKS p50 fenders on Riv 650b
bikes.

[RBW] Re: Forward rocking vibration with long reach brakes

2013-02-14 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Don't be embarrassed. It happened to me frequently with an Ultegra headset I
had on my Atlantis. I had to snug it up every couple months.

More recently, I experienced a similar thing on a different bike, and checked
the usual suspects: brakes, headset, cracks in the frame/fork, etc. Nothing.
Over time I noticed that my bar angle was pitching slightly forward. Applying
considerable forward rotational force showed that the bar clamp on the stem
wasn't as tight as it could be. I greased the bolt(s) and retightened, which
fixed it. I later figured out that hard braking was causing the bar to rotate
forward, but pulling back on the bar to ease over a particular railroad track
was having the opposite affect. My one-way commute had the one railroad to hop
over, followed by a fairly hard stop. The effect was self-canceling such that I
didn't notice for quite awhile that the bar was slipping, aside from the sense
that there was a small singular movement when I hit the brakes hard.

[RBW] Re: Staff Bikes - Mark's Bontrager

2013-02-14 Thread Philip Williamson
No kidding. Mark might have another grey bike, too. The 'cross bike is a Top
Three bike for me. Perfect.
You know what looks great? The burrito wrap. I believe I will heist that for my
bikes. I've never used one, but I do have a set of tools and such for each
bike, including a pump, a blinky, and an inhaler.
A burrito wrap with a blinky strap and a cellphone pocket... Hmmm.
