[RBW] Front Rack ideas

2013-02-24 Thread Edwin W
I am working on a Sam Hillborne build. I got a used 60cm single top tube
sidepull brake edition (thanks Jim M!).
I am trying to keep this build on a strict budget, which is tough.
I wanted to hear from your ideas to solve the following problems:

   1. I have a Soma mini front rackhttp://store.somafab.com/somialfrra.html,
with a Wald 139 zip tied on, but it is too short to clear 38mm tires and
fenders. I have it p-clambed to my current bike and that works ok, but
feels more wobbly than if it were bolted on, I think. Is there a way to
extend the legs? I was thinking of a connector between the rack and eyelet,
but I think a joint there would be prone to flex with weight.
   2. The Mark's rack would be great in theory, but expensive and only is
   expected to take 4.4 pounds.
   3. Anyone had any experience with this dutch
rackhttp://www.dutchbikebits.com/index.php?route=product/productpath=38product_id=187?

They sell it in the US
herehttp://rollingorangebikes.com/front-carrier-steco/.
Shipping/importing makes it pricey. Pros - sturdy as heck. Cons - a bit
   overbuilt? Damage to headtube?
   4. I looked at these racks from
Racktimehttp://www.ebikestop.com/racktime_topit_universal_front_mount_rack_silver-RK7206.php?PARTNER=GOOGPSgclid=CMz2mIe8yrUCFQ7NnAodaWcAhA.

Never heard of that seller. All the
pictureshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/geiranders/5134857957/in/photostream/I
have seen set them pretty high. Anybody used one on a Sam? How are the
Sam mid-fork braze-ons in terms of height compared to other manufacturers?

Thishttp://twosixteen.com/fivetoedsloth/2010/10/top-racks-and-mid-fork-bosses/review
of racks says Rivendell's are higher than others. True?
   5. Reading that review made me look at this
Blackburnhttp://www.blackburndesign.com/racks/front-racks/mtf-1-front.html.
Anybody used that with Riv mid forks?
   6. I looked at Jenny's Hilsen on the staff bikes page and she said she
   used this Sun-Lite QR
rackhttp://sunlitecycling.com/product_detail.php?short_code=QR-TEC+Front+Rackcl1=RACKS+FOR+BIKES-
I'd rather bolt it than use up the quick release, as it would then no
   longer release, quickly!
   7. General considerations
  1. Price
  2. Weight (not of the rack, but capability - I usually throw my work
bag in there and sometimes up to a case of beer - 20-30lb)
  3. Can I attach a front headlight? I am loving the BM IQ fly RT from
  Peter White.
  4. And of course quality and longevity, but I have had basic cheap
racks last a long time in my daily commute needs.
   8. I think the new Sam's have two eyelets on each side up front, which
   would probably have solved everything!

Other suggestions?
Herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/90785999@N06/8497462361/in/photostreamis a
picture of where I am, mid-build.

Thanks in advance.

[RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?

2013-02-24 Thread wrickster
My wife and I have been riding a custom made Santana Noventa for the past
several years our choice of tire size is 700x28 sans fenders. We originally
used Conti Gatorskins and then switched to Ruffy Tuffy's . We were once
part of the go fast crowd and actually considered the 700x28's to be a
concession in speed for comfort and durability. We average approx 1 flat
per 1k miles. We did once encounter a split casing and had to mount a new
tire to finish the ride (good thing we had a spare, eh). I just built
myself a new Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen and run 650b x 38's that I have just
fell in love with. This has me giving serious thought to switching to
700x32's on the Santana I believe this would be an ideal set-up for more
comfort and durability without much sacrifice in speed .

So wondering if there are any tandem riders here and what tire widths they

wondering what that might translate to on a 700c tandem?

[RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?

2013-02-24 Thread rb
We use 35 mm tandem tires, and as much as I like wider tires /hetres on my
single bikes, 35 seems optimal...there is plenty of useful flexion in the
frame of all these tandems, that wider (and I did have hetres on for a
trial on the santana) didn't yield appreciable benefit. That said, our
favorite tandem is the bike friday! - though it's a bit of a sporty /
weird ride. With my wife who is a sprinter / and me, it's 350lbs of
person + 35 lb bike, accelerating like mad; and because there's so much
yield to the frame / it's not unlike driving a turbocharged front wheel
drive race car / you have to hold it sideways to go straight. As compared
to the Santana, which is like a locomotive...that one really hauls too.
But increased tire size never really made a difference (decreased, ie we
tried 25s on it once...was awful). So sweet spot - 32 - 35 mm

Colorado I had to scrub speed periodically which works fine, but with a
drum one could engage it and just ride.

That said I rode tandem with cantis in the past and would not go back,
given the power of discs in wet conditions. Our previous Speedster was set
up to take discs, drum and cantis, but we never installed anything but
 disks.

The handling of our Java is only slightly slower than our Speedster. Still
more responsive than our Cannondale MTB tandem.

Dwan told me they worked to make the Java handle similar to the Speedster
when using comparable size tires. They design with low bottom brackets
which helps. We have not used tires bigger than 700x 32 yet so can't say
how bigger tires might affect handling. I asked for it to be a little more
stable on slow uphills than our Speedster and Dwan achieved that.

Wheels -- we haven't had an issue with 700c wheels in SS cases, with
 tires deflated.

 Hi David,

On the Rivendell web site, the description of the SOMA San Marcos says
that 35mm wide tires will fit this bike. Not clear whether or not this
could also fit fenders. Are you thinking of a wider tire on a road bike?

Re: [RBW] Front Rack ideas

2013-02-24 Thread Jim Mather
Wald makes what they call a rear rack, but I don't see why you couldn't put
it on the front:
http://www.amazon.com/Wald-Rear-Bike-Rack-Chrome/dp/B000C129JM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1361727442sr=8-1keywords=wald+rack

Many of the Wald baskets will bolt to dropouts and mount to the handlebars
at the top so you don't need a rack:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dsportingfield-keywords=wald%20basketsprefix=wald%2Bbas%2Csportingrh=n:3375251%2Ck%3Awald%20basket

I can't answer your specific questions, but my concern about Blackburn is
that they call it a mountain rack, so it may be designed for 26 wheels.
It's too bad they don't give the leg measurements.

Your build is looking good!

It may sit too high for you, but I found it to be a good value in a mid
priced rack. Rated at 10 kilos. BTW: Racktime is a sister company to
Taubus - they are both owned by the same parent.

I am working on a Sam Hillborne build. I got a used 60cm single top tube

I am trying to keep this build on a strict budget, which is tough.
I wanted to hear from your ideas to solve the following problems:

1. I have a Soma mini front
 rackhttp://store.somafab.com/somialfrra.html,
with a Wald 139 zip tied on, but it is too short to clear 38mm tires and
fenders. I have it p-clambed to my current bike and that works ok, but
feels more wobbly than if it were bolted on, I think. Is there a way to
extend the legs? I was thinking of a connector between the rack and
 eyelet,
but I think a joint there would be prone to flex with weight.
2. The Mark's rack would be great in theory, but expensive and only is
expected to take 4.4 pounds.
3. Anyone had any experience with this dutch
 rackhttp://www.dutchbikebits.com/index.php?route=product/productpath=38product_id=187?

They sell it in the US
 herehttp://rollingorangebikes.com/front-carrier-steco/.
Shipping/importing makes it pricey. Pros - sturdy as heck. Cons - a bit
overbuilt? Damage to headtube?
4. I looked at these racks from
 Racktimehttp://www.ebikestop.com/racktime_topit_universal_front_mount_rack_silver-RK7206.php?PARTNER=GOOGPSgclid=CMz2mIe8yrUCFQ7NnAodaWcAhA.

Never heard of that seller. All the
 pictureshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/geiranders/5134857957/in/photostream/I
have seen set them pretty high. Anybody used one on a Sam? How are the
Sam mid-fork braze-ons in terms of height compared to other manufacturers?

 Thishttp://twosixteen.com/fivetoedsloth/2010/10/top-racks-and-mid-fork-bosses/review
of racks says Rivendell's are higher than others. True?
5. Reading that review made me look at this
 Blackburnhttp://www.blackburndesign.com/racks/front-racks/mtf-1-front.html.
Anybody used that with Riv mid forks?
6. I looked at Jenny's Hilsen on the staff bikes page and she said she
used this Sun-Lite QR
 rackhttp://sunlitecycling.com/product_detail.php?short_code=QR-TEC+Front+Rackcl1=RACKS+FOR+BIKES-
I'd rather bolt it than use up the quick release, as it would then no
longer release, quickly!
7. General considerations
   1. Price
   2. Weight (not of the rack, but capability - I usually throw my
work bag in there and sometimes up to a case of beer - 20-30lb)
   3. Can I attach a front headlight? I am loving the BM IQ fly RT
   from Peter White.
   4. And of course quality and longevity, but I have had basic cheap
racks last a long time in my daily commute needs.

I had them on my 60cm Bombadil, (with 60mm Berthoud fenders) and they fit

[RBW] Re: Front Rack ideas

2013-02-24 Thread rperks
For max basket support consider the Soma Porteur as well. It has a strong
bolted connection to your front dropouts, can bolt to your fender as well
as the VO and a Wald 139 zip ties on just fine. It also comes in painted,
chrome and stainless depending on your needs and budget.

I am working on a Sam Hillborne build. I got a used 60cm single top tube
sidepull brake edition (thanks Jim M!).
I am trying to keep this build on a strict budget, which is tough.
I wanted to hear from your ideas to solve the following problems:

1. I have a Soma mini front
 rackhttp://store.somafab.com/somialfrra.html,
with a Wald 139 zip tied on, but it is too short to clear 38mm tires and
fenders. I have it p-clambed to my current bike and that works ok, but
feels more wobbly than if it were bolted on, I think. Is there a way to
extend the legs? I was thinking of a connector between the rack and
 eyelet,
but I think a joint there would be prone to flex with weight.
2. The Mark's rack would be great in theory, but expensive and only is
expected to take 4.4 pounds.
3. Anyone had any experience with this dutch
 rackhttp://www.dutchbikebits.com/index.php?route=product/productpath=38product_id=187?

They sell it in the US
 herehttp://rollingorangebikes.com/front-carrier-steco/.
Shipping/importing makes it pricey. Pros - sturdy as heck. Cons - a bit
overbuilt? Damage to headtube?
4. I looked at these racks from
 Racktimehttp://www.ebikestop.com/racktime_topit_universal_front_mount_rack_silver-RK7206.php?PARTNER=GOOGPSgclid=CMz2mIe8yrUCFQ7NnAodaWcAhA.

Never heard of that seller. All the
 pictureshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/geiranders/5134857957/in/photostream/I
have seen set them pretty high. Anybody used one on a Sam? How are the
Sam mid-fork braze-ons in terms of height compared to other manufacturers?

 Thishttp://twosixteen.com/fivetoedsloth/2010/10/top-racks-and-mid-fork-bosses/review
of racks says Rivendell's are higher than others. True?
5. Reading that review made me look at this
 Blackburnhttp://www.blackburndesign.com/racks/front-racks/mtf-1-front.html.
Anybody used that with Riv mid forks?
6. I looked at Jenny's Hilsen on the staff bikes page and she said she
used this Sun-Lite QR
 rackhttp://sunlitecycling.com/product_detail.php?short_code=QR-TEC+Front+Rackcl1=RACKS+FOR+BIKES-
I'd rather bolt it than use up the quick release, as it would then no
longer release, quickly!
7. General considerations
   1. Price
   2. Weight (not of the rack, but capability - I usually throw my
work bag in there and sometimes up to a case of beer - 20-30lb)
   3. Can I attach a front headlight? I am loving the BM IQ fly RT
   from Peter White.
   4. And of course quality and longevity, but I have had basic cheap
racks last a long time in my daily commute needs.
8. I think the new Sam's have two eyelets on each side up front, which
would probably have solved everything!

 Other suggestions?
 Herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/90785999@N06/8497462361/in/photostreamis a

[RBW] Sunday: wind, sand, sun, cold.

2013-02-24 Thread PATRICK MOORE
https://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/NORTHOFALAMEDAANDEASTOFCORRALESACEQUIAROADS022413

I rode to church (~8 miles), then, later, back to Sprouts (our low budget
Wild Oats) to meet my brother to explore the acequia roads between Corrales
and Bernalillo. Firm but gravely hardpack and sand swamps. And goatheads.
My brother flatted twice on the 15 mile out and back; not me, despite
flicking a couple of deeply buried thorns from my front tire. Eastbound I
spun out my 83 high gear on pavement thanks to a strong NWesterly, but we
tcould only grun along slowly northbound on the raised and exposed service
roads. After dropping pressure to ~12/15 the sand was easy.

Riding back west to our starting point, into steady 33 mph NWesterlies, my
brother quipped, between gasps, world's sorriest paceline as we grunted
along at 12 mph on pavement. Temps in the low 30s.

Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.

2013-02-24 Thread hsmitham

By the by I been meaning to try out a ride from Castaic on the Old Ridge
Route, which was the original route by the old timers bringing supplies
from Bakersfield to Los Angeles, there's a 14 mile stretch designated a
historical landmark and is closed to traffic, the old pavement has
disintegrated and seems perfect for a mixed terrain ride it has something
like 2500 to 3000’ elevation. I may ride it this coming Saturday if the
weather cooperates and nothing on the calendar? If I do I'll report back on
the feasibility and worthiness.

Re: [RBW] Re: RCW S24O Saturday-Sunday February 23-24

2013-02-24 Thread Manuel Acosta
Great memorable time. Rolled on to bart from San Leandro and low and behold
I run into Anne. When we rolled up to Rivendell HQ it was typical Rivendell
business. Folks rolling around on bikes or checking out other bikes. Liesl
was there rolling around on the Appaloosa. We all lingered at the shop to
wait for a handful of people and with the sun coming down we rolled out not
really knowing where we were going but just going anyway. We rolled over to
Shell Ridge just at as the sun was setting with the dark quickly rolling
in. A good number of joggers and dog walkers wondered where we were going,
we just told them that we were on a training ride for a tour...*wink*
*wink* We get to the campsite pretty much in the dark. We set up tents and
got food ready for the night. On the last camp trip with Dustin I told him
next time we go camping I would bring a live crab and sure enough I did for
this one. Everyone felt bad for Sebastian because he pretty much
had multiple concessions along the way to camp. I like to think I gave him
one last adventure. Everyone shared food. Very few partook on the crab I
was willing to shared, Grant didn't bode a lot of confidence in my food
choice saying that I better cook it pass bacteria growing standards. Gladly
I did cook it right and the night went without issue. Not before we had a
short mini hike to warm-up the toes. We woke up to a clear beautiful day
and had some spam quesadillas. Liesl as a sign of thanks offered a really
cool beads to everyone that was able to come on the trip. We rode back to
Rivendell HQ for expressos and cappuccinos made by Rivendell's own barista
Keven. Apparently Keven roasts his own coffee beans. Keven can roast a mean
bean. Maybe new Rivendell musa product? I wouldn't mind buying Rivendell
coffee beans with cool roast names after their own bikes! Oh a man can
dream.

Great people, great day, great time.
Again big thanks to the Rivendell crew on making this happen. Great time
out.
Congrats to Liesl again and thanks again for the cool bead.
Pictures proved that Bill beat me to my link.

[RBW] Re: Front Rack ideas

2013-02-24 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I JUST finished installing a Blackburn MTF rack up front on my bro's bike.
The installation required some tweaking with the mid-fork braze-ons (to
get the rack level), but overall I think it looks like a decent rack. It
attaches only at the mid-fork and lower eyelets, and I'm not sure how
suitable it would be for heavier loads (Blackburn claims it carries 25 lb,
so maybe no more than 35 lbs?). This rack was inexpensive enough ($35-$40)
to take a chance (and even repaint it kelly green)... Link to
photohttp://www.flickr.com/photos/16461051@N04/8503972004/

Good luck.

I am working on a Sam Hillborne build. I got a used 60cm single top tube
sidepull brake edition (thanks Jim M!).
I am trying to keep this build on a strict budget, which is tough.
I wanted to hear from your ideas to solve the following problems:

1. I have a Soma mini front
 rackhttp://store.somafab.com/somialfrra.html,
with a Wald 139 zip tied on, but it is too short to clear 38mm tires and
fenders. I have it p-clambed to my current bike and that works ok, but
feels more wobbly than if it were bolted on, I think. Is there a way to
extend the legs? I was thinking of a connector between the rack and
 eyelet,
but I think a joint there would be prone to flex with weight.
2. The Mark's rack would be great in theory, but expensive and only is
expected to take 4.4 pounds.
3. Anyone had any experience with this dutch
 rackhttp://www.dutchbikebits.com/index.php?route=product/productpath=38product_id=187?

They sell it in the US
 herehttp://rollingorangebikes.com/front-carrier-steco/.
Shipping/importing makes it pricey. Pros - sturdy as heck. Cons - a bit
overbuilt? Damage to headtube?
4. I looked at these racks from
 Racktimehttp://www.ebikestop.com/racktime_topit_universal_front_mount_rack_silver-RK7206.php?PARTNER=GOOGPSgclid=CMz2mIe8yrUCFQ7NnAodaWcAhA.

Never heard of that seller. All the
 pictureshttp://www.flickr.com/photos/geiranders/5134857957/in/photostream/I
have seen set them pretty high. Anybody used one on a Sam? How are the
Sam mid-fork braze-ons in terms of height compared to other manufacturers?

 Thishttp://twosixteen.com/fivetoedsloth/2010/10/top-racks-and-mid-fork-bosses/review
of racks says Rivendell's are higher than others. True?
5. Reading that review made me look at this
 Blackburnhttp://www.blackburndesign.com/racks/front-racks/mtf-1-front.html.
Anybody used that with Riv mid forks?
6. I looked at Jenny's Hilsen on the staff bikes page and she said she
used this Sun-Lite QR
 rackhttp://sunlitecycling.com/product_detail.php?short_code=QR-TEC+Front+Rackcl1=RACKS+FOR+BIKES-
I'd rather bolt it than use up the quick release, as it would then no
longer release, quickly!
7. General considerations
   1. Price
   2. Weight (not of the rack, but capability - I usually throw my
work bag in there and sometimes up to a case of beer - 20-30lb)
   3. Can I attach a front headlight? I am loving the BM IQ fly RT
   from Peter White.
   4. And of course quality and longevity, but I have had basic cheap
racks last a long time in my daily commute needs.
8. I think the new Sam's have two eyelets on each side up front, which
would probably have solved everything!

 Other suggestions?
 Herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/90785999@N06/8497462361/in/photostreamis a
picture of where I am, mid-build.

 Thanks in advance.

Re: [RBW] Re: Los Angeles Urban Solo ride.

2013-02-24 Thread hsmitham
Yes that's correct. There's if I'm not mistaken a 17.5 mile section that
was designated a historic route in 1997 but still closed pending repairs. I
intend to explore it.

From the Ridge Route web page:

An Adventure Pass is NO LONGER REQUIRED. There are NO designated Developed
Campgrounds along the Ridge Route. Areas without Developed Campgrounds
are referred to as Open Despersed Areas.

Open Despersed Areas allow camping.

This may be a S240 in the future.

A couple souls, more hardy than I, slept in tents on

Despite the cool and wet reputation there are nice days pretty much year

Would love to see pics from your SART adventure... the 6 miles before you
get to the ocean were my stomping grounds all through the 80s early 90s.
Ridge route pics would be nice too.

Can I suggest a route that is not too long—maybe 20-30 miles each way?
And not too technical as in a traverse along 40 degree inclines over
boulders and tree stumps. And accessible from Walnut Creek as I would need
to beg a bike from Riv. I am *all in* on this and willing to pack a light
camping kit in a duffle for the plane, although would also welcome sharing
a bunk in a 2-3 person tent if this is a possibility. If it's totally
rainy, bets are off; however, cooler temps are not an obstacle for me as I
 ride in snow.

Who's in on this caper? You don't have to be a RCW—yet! Just believe in
the RCW Credo (which we'll have to come up with during the Jamboree).

Re: [RBW] Re: RCW S24O Saturday-Sunday February 23-24

2013-02-24 Thread Anne Paulson
I rode over to Union City (30 miles, mostly along creeks and the bay
on paths separated from cars, which is really cool in the middle of
such a big urban area), hopped on BART, and as I was chatting with
another cyclist (bike tourist, steel bike, nice guy) who should come
up behind me but Manny.

We arrived at RWHQ to be greeted by Liesl, the Riv Chica Warrior
herself. As we were waiting for the rest of the crowd to assemble, it
began to get cool, and somehow one of those wonderful possum wool caps
with the brim made its way from the shelf to my head by way of the
cash register. It's never safe to walk into RWHQ.

Eventually we all rode off, on a pretty mellow ride to, um, somewhere,
with trails. Chickens like me walked some of it (hey, it was bumpy
and downhill and by that time dark). And then we pushed our bikes to
the flat spot on top of the hill, where we could look out all around
and see the lights of the metropolis. Several Trangias emerged.
Bacon-wrapped sausages appeared. There was chocolate. It was cold.

The next morning, the sun was shining, and we could see the bay and
everything, and Liesl gave us each a tiny trade bead. I'm going to sew
mine onto the zipper pull of my tool bag. And then we went back to
RWHQ and had coffee with real whipped cream, which is awesome. Also
Cowgirl Creamery cheese which is also awesome.

Thanks everyone for a good time.

Riding back west to our starting point, into steady 33 mph NWesterlies, my

along at 12 mph on pavement. Temps in the low 30s.
