With your Stan's filled tubes, does the latex fluid stay fluidish, or does
it dry out like what happens in tires? I've thought about doing that, but
don't know if i have to keep recharging w/ fresh fluid like I do tires.

TIA

Right. The tire qualities may be different, but the geometry won't necessarily

The quality of the tire can make a huge difference. A 559X60 Big Apple is
almost as big as a 622X23 but the two ride much different.

AFAICT, the only reason to convert a 26" wheeled bike to 650B is for the
sake of a nice road type tire that you can't find in 559.

Re: [RBW] Re: Scratching an itch...26" to 650b All Rounder...with PICS!

2013-03-22 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I think the reason is to get better tire choices which, in this case, I
guess means better road tire choices (since 559 has all sorts of good off
road rubber).

As to Jan's presumed proof, he found that for his riders, bigger (forget to
what point, I doubt to 29" size) didn't require more effort over road-side
rumblestrips. Hardly a universal conclusion. I find that fat, 700c tires
certainly roll better over sand and low amplitude, high frequency bumps
compared to 559 equivalents.

[RBW] WTT: My Nitto R14 Top Rack for your Mark's Rack

2013-03-22 Thread David Sprunger
As the subject line indicates, I'm wondering if any one would like to trade
my Nitto R14 Top Rack for a Mark's rack.

I have been using the top rack on the front of my 60 cm Bombadil, so the
struts are still long. As part of a waiting-for-spring project, I have
switched to a Nitto mini/platrack set up instead. I'd like the Mark's rack
for my wife's Glorius.

You can see the top rack at this link although it is somewhat obscured by a
big loafer:

Re: [RBW] Scratching an itch...26" to 650b All Rounder...with PICS!

2013-03-22 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I've converted a 26in Salsa Ala Carte to 650B, and it worked great, mainly
because there was an abundance of frame clearance and it used disc brakes.

I HAVE had canti brakes that seemed to have a higher reach than others;
whether it had 1.25cm more reach I wonder. This is certainly encouraging
to see. Nice job!

Re: [RBW] Scratching an itch...26" to 650b All Rounder...with PICS!

2013-03-22 Thread Tim McNamara
Ron Lau did this conversion back during the first wave of 650b conversions
about 5 years ago. He was very enthusiastic about the outcome, which I paid
attention to due to having a 1996 A/R with 26ers. At the time I was a little
unhappy with it, but putting my favorite saddle on that bike and Pasela 26 x
1.25s made me happy enough that I never pursued the conversion. I think mine
would fit 650b x 38s with fenders...

The other reason I did not pursue the conversion was the very low-rake fork and
concerns about ending up with huge trail, but from Ron's ride reports this
wasn't very noticeably different.

I think that Ron's bike is still on the 650B conversion site.

I know for sure the moto lites would work, but unless I strike out with the

Re: [RBW] Horizontal Drop outs??? was: Bombadil v. 2.0 and new Fatty Rumpkins

2013-03-22 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I have had great success with the Shimano Alfine tensioner... It visually
looks like a derailleur (a potential detractor) and may seem like overkill,
but it works extremely well, is relatively inexpensive, and it has a very
strong spring. It's especially effective when running a rear
internal-geared hub and a double or triple crank with front derailleur,
providing a vastly expanded gear range to a 5, 7 or 8 speed IG hub.

[RBW] Re: Scratching an itch...26" to 650b All Rounder...with PICS!

2013-03-22 Thread Leslie
Another brake alternative, since you have Pauls on there, is to go with the
Paul Motolites, then slide the pads higher up the arm.

Crown, bridge, and stays are fine, since you're ruling out fenders.
Hetres should be close enough to the Rumpkins; my Hetres measure at 41, my
Rumpkins at 40...

[RBW] Scratching an itch...26" to 650b All Rounder...with PICS!

2013-03-22 Thread jinxed
I've thought about it several times but never followed up until now!

Every time my buddy and I get together we make mention of throwing his 650b
wheelset in my AR to see what we see. Well I finally just called him up and
told him I was coming over.

I took my set of Fatty Rumpkin tires that I loved but had been hanging in
the garage without a bike to fit. We mounted them up and got our test fit
on.

I have to say...I got SUPER excited about this. I rode my Bleriot all over
the place shod with these FR's and they felt darn good in both rough dirt
and smooth trails. It was my first and best foray into the 650b thing.

Brakes will be a non issue. We checked an old set of Shimano cantis that
would be just fine, though the Tektro Oryx will be a little cleaner and
should set up jst fine! Considering I never have need to run fenders,
I'm left with oodles of clearance on the 42mm Rumpkins, and I'm a little
giddy that I could even try some some Hetres!

Take a look...I think she looks natural wearing 650b no?

Re: [RBW] Horizontal Drop outs??? was: Bombadil v. 2.0 and new Fatty Rumpkins

2013-03-22 Thread Norman Bone
The early Riv models (Long Low, Road Standard and All-Rounder) were considered
production. If you wanted to deviate from how they were configured, Riv charged
a 'Custom' fee. See the 'Custom frames' heading at the bottom:

http://www.cyclofiend.com/Images/rbw/gen1/rivcat05_framespecs.jpg

I don't know what Grant's rationale for the horizontal drop outs was. Wheelbase
adjustability? Maybe he'll speak to it?

I think horizontals are only on Rivendell customs, and then only when asked
for. I don't believe any of their production bikes have ever had horizontal or
semi-horizontal.

Re: [RBW] are there any true 700x40 plush, high tpi tires?

2013-03-22 Thread Dan McNamara
Although not high tpi, I have enjoyed the big Resist Nomads. They measure
out a little over 40 on Velocity Synergy rims. They leave a little to be
desired in the finish department (nowhere near as good as Panaracer tires)
but the price is right, they are plush and feel quick. No flats in over
1000 miles. There is a little review in the Ocean Air Cycles blog somewhere.

No. I actually (generally) fall pretty well. Hit the ground on the old

not run over).

On the newer one, it was on the Hilsen, and I would argue that the reason I
didn't hit the ground had a lot to do with the inherent stability of GP's

[RBW] Re: Tags?

2013-03-22 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
This function only works if you are viewing the group discussions via the
web interface.

The tags provide an ability for the viewer to see all similar listings by
clicking on it. All non-tagged posts and non-tagged threads disappear when
you click on the tag. Essentially it's a quick filter function.

In no way is this meant to replace specific topic and post Subject Lines.
Since many group members interact through email, it is important to be
direct and clear in subject lines.

Michael, what I did was to enable "Tagging" in general (as opposed to
"Categories", which creates a hierarchy and higher degree of separation in
the conversation than I'm comfortable with), and then created a single tag
for "Transactions". My thought was that folks who want to skim the list to
see what is being offered would then have a tool to do so. (Again, only
through the web interface).

Hope that makes sense,

- Jim / list admin / cyclofiend.com

[RBW] Re: are there any true 700x40 plush, high tpi tires?

2013-03-22 Thread Johan Larsson
As a note - if I have understood it correctly, Continental includes _all_
layers in their tpi value, i.e. their "180 tpi" tires have three layers of
60 tpi casing. Please verify/debunk/explain this if someone have any
knowledge about it...

I remember reading somewhere on wheelenergy.com that one of their findings
was that a high tpi count in itself didn't mean much, if anything. From
memory I think they said that tires with low thread count could perform
just as well, and that other factors are more important.

I wonder about stress risers? I have an old set of Scott Drop bars that are
on a triathlon bike. very seldom ride that bike because of the bad knee and
it's high gears. The bars do not have many miles on them but they are old.
They are also the only handle bars I have ever used that I can feel flex

[RBW] Re: Thanks Keven & Rivendell

2013-03-22 Thread Geoff Cisler
Bill,

I was probably on that exact same bike the day before. Last year, when I
stopped by RBW HQ, they didn't have a bike my size to test ride. This year
I was prepared and they had that Hunq waiting for me! I had just ridden my
own bike (1983 Fuji) from Hayward Amtrak up over the hills via San Ramon to
Walnut Creek. After a little break, chatting with Keven about bike fit and
handlebar width, I took off on the Hunq to Shell Ridge and was amazed by
both the cycling in that area as well as the bike itself. Here are some
quick shots:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jpbikeresearch/8550639212

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jpbikeresearch/8550642760

And when I asked if I needed to leave a license or something, Keven said
"No one's ever taken a bike, so if you do, you'd be the first."

Fantastic!

Re: [RBW] Horizontal Drop outs??? was: Bombadil v. 2.0 and new Fatty Rumpkins

2013-03-22 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Aside from fixed-gear conversions (not ideal with Riv's low BBs), I don't see
many advantages to a traditional horizontal dropout. With freewheeling singles
or IGHs, a chain tensioner is a good solution. A lot of people have a reflexive
distrust of chain tensioners, but a quality tensioner (especially the Rohloff)
is a wonderful thing. Of course, a tensioner detracts from the clean chainline
that is apparently the defining hallmark of a good single-cog bike.

But Riv is not really a single-speed brand, nor has Riv ever made any effort to
promote IGH use. In fact, as much as I like Pudge's Rohloff Bombadil, the chain
tensioner isn't the only "hack" required to make it work. Since the frame lacks
a provision for OEM Rohloff compatibility, a long clamp-on torque arm is
required, too.

The vertical dropouts that Riv uses are sensible. Rivs are made for dérailleur
drivetrains. The vertical dropouts make for a precise wheel-to-derailleur
relationship that promotes consistent shifting. The vert dropouts also prevent
the wheel from slipping if the qr isn't tight enough. And, of course, there's
fender line to consider. If you're designing a frame for derailleurs, vertical
dropouts are the way to go.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grand Bois Cypres vs Nifty Swifty

2013-03-22 Thread Bruce Herbitter
To me, the Nifty Swiftys are a bit harsh and heavy and the wire bead is
harder to install and get fully round. If in a hurry to mount a tire,
expect "thump, thump" as you ride. The Cypres are nicest to ride on in this
group, but mileage seems to be about 2100 (with a position swap mid way).
N-S last much longer and are more flat resistant. The Maxy Fasty has been a
good compromise. Lighter, fiber bead, comfortable and reasonably flat
resistant with good mileage.

The O.P. asked about 32 - 33 mm tires, but the G,B, Ourson is still around
and that measures about 34 iirc. The tread of a Col de la Vie on a way
better casing. I've had a pair on my Saluki since 2009 and had zero flats
in thousands of miles.

Right now, the smallest tires I am running are 37s, but I still have these
on the shelf. The Soma tires are on the list to try someday, if I ever
need another tire. Like some others here, I seem to have too many tires and
not enough bikes.

[RBW] Re: are there any true 700x40 plush, high tpi tires?

2013-03-22 Thread ascpgh
A quick review of information from selected manufacturers' websites
reinforced some fundamentals on this subject.

>From Michelin: "The finer the thread the higher the density. It is an
important characteristic of a light, supple and fast tire. Higher density
is not always better; it must consider strength, durability, and real world
situations to provide optimized performance."

Schwalbe points out another discrete fact in description of construction:
"The carcass is a rubberized textile fabric which is laid around the bead
cores. The carcass is then coated with a rubber compound. The tire tread is
applied and the assembly is vulcanized." The compound coating the thread
cloth matrix complicates things immediately.

Vittoria: "Cotton is the traditional material used for high quality
tubulars. Vittoria produces all its casing products in-house with a wide
range of cross-sections, from natural cotton to 220 TPI for its tubular
range. A fabric made from finely woven thin yarns to get a softer and more
flexible casing offering amazing grip thanks to greater contact surface
with the road. Better comfort too, as micro impacts are absorbed better.
Plus faster speeds, thanks to better rolling resistance. The density of the
fabric is expressed in threads-per-inch (TPI): the higher the TPI, the
finer the threads and the denser the weave. The higher the TPI, the more
flexible the tire. Cotton is incredibly tough and fine, letting us produce
casings with the highest possible TPI."

Maxxis, regarding TPI measurement, offers: "The number of nylon threads
that cross through one square inch of the tire’s casing. Lower TPI gives
better puncture and tear resistance, but is heavier. Higher TPI conforms
more to the terrain, offering a smoother, more supple ride. It is also
lighter weight. Maxxis TPI ratings are the threads-per-inch of a single
casing ply, as compared to some competitor TPI ratings."

Summing up key points from these general corporate sources:
1) TPI varies and increases the suppleness of comparative fiber cloths
(cotton, silk or nylon), but reduction of individual fibers' size may not
be appropriate in every circumstance and the actual material of the fiber
can have input to the ultimate perception of the casing suppleness. As
Maxxis points out, some makers may be counting the threads of several
layers of cloth which offset the threads to create a very dense effect but
not from a single ply (actually illustrated on Vittoria's website). Among
similar fibers there are levels of quality also; cotton can be graded in
terms of the staple or individual fiber length as an example.

2) The make up of the compound applied to the matrix the thread casing
provides has an important role in the outcome of the tire's
characteristics. Clearly a tire's intended end use will dictate the outcome
product somewhere on the spectrum between durability and suppleness. Each
maker lays claim to a balanced, innovative solution to that problem with
lots of copyrighted nomenclature.

3) The tread cap (and any puncture proofing sandwiched beneath it atop the
carcass), and its compound make up, has impact on product ride
characteristics, the same true for the decision and compound used to
"gumwall" the tire versus leaving it a "skinwall" tire.

That's a handful of parameters that encompass several features of tire
construction to consider when putting a finger down to say "this is the
one" when tire shopping. My hat is off to the developers and designers who
specify all of these parameters, designing a tire that will find an
audience of consumers who can discern its performance and differentiate it
from others enough to justify its expense and distribute it widely enough
to reach their buyers in the marketplace.
